An app for intercultural Communication between foreigners in China and Chinese people

Eric, from New Zealand. He is interested in current China and wants to know more about China.

After a short while,Eric receives many answers from Chinuses users

He found that the star who is indicated as the representative of Chinese beauty is not beautiful, so he asked 'What is the Chinese standard of Beauty' on HelloChina

He has a deeper understanding ofcurrent Chinese culture with on-line communication with Chinese

My priority was to design a temperature controllable and easy to carry box for preventing pets from harmful environment.

Quick prototypes and some simple test were used for evaluating the concepts, considering thermodynamics, manufacturing, efficiency and aesthetic.

Robust design is an engineering methodology for improving productivity during research with high-quality and low cost. In normal condition, robust design is used in large scale production. However, as an industrial design modules, we try to experience robust design in a customized area. In this case is Erhu production.

Erhu, one kind of the traditional Chinese musical instruments, its production techniques only inherit orally between the Erhu craftsmen. Therefore, there is no systematic basis or theories for contemporary Erhu production, especially in terms of quality control. As a result, the quality between every Erhu would quite differ with each other, even they are produced by one craftsmen with the same material. The uncertainty of its quality cause higher defective rate. The ultimate purpose of quality control is to control the quality of voice. Several factors may influence the Erhu sound, such as volume, tone and pitch. Among these factors, volume have the most measurable evaluation criteria, so we chose it as the factor to be researched for in this study.Robust design methods were used to maximize the volume of Erhu, and verify feasibility of robust design for instrument design.

Robust Design Case study of Erhu

In this experiment, there are four parameters was chosen and three level for each parameter.

2. Length of drum1. The ratio between front area and back area of drum

4. The thickness of the drum board

3. The area of the curve inside drum

Drum Resonator

One of wood piece of Drum ResonatorComponents of Erhu

Considering the main aim of robust design is to enlarge the voice of erhu and mainly focus on the loudness, drum is the main part we finally selected. After further research and communication with erhu master and out tutor, we picked 4 experinment parameters. several parameters are found to interact with other. We combined these interacting parameters together and eventually 4 parameters are selected. Levels of each parameter are determined based on its original size.

The temperature and humidity of the air could influence the performance of the Erhu material as it has different stretchiness and elasticity. Different gestures of player also would cause different voice, as well as their habit to the tightness of the strings and hairs. The noises factors would influence the loudness of the voice, which may cause some errors to the final results.

In our experiments, nine drum resonators with different length, F/B area ratio, thickness and inside curve length should be manufactured.

Preparation of experimental materials

Foam boards were chosen to replace the initial wood structure

of drum. large pieces of foam boards were cut into 5 * 20cm

rectangular boards.

These rectangular boards then are marked according to length, F/B area ratio and thickness for the

next cutting.

Foam boards were polished according to the computers

drawings.

To combine six foam boards into a complete drum resonator, both sides of the boards were cut into

60-degree angles.

Membranes were soaked in cold water about two hours for softening

(Fig. 6). Then the residual meat and fibrous tissue on the softened

membranes were removed.

Truss membranes and drum resonator together with hoop which wrapped by napkin

Completed erhu for testing. Except the drum resonator,

other parts of this erhu are from a wood erhu and remain unchanged in the

experiments.

test

We selected a quiet place for testing. This can reduce the noise from environment. A app, YiLu, was chosen for recording. 9 sets of experimental data and a set of control data were finished.

The results show the length of drum have the biggest effect on loudness and effect on signal/noise ratio. And other three factors have little effect on signal/noise ratio. The parameters of loudest Erhu are:

confirmation experiment Experiment Result

The confirmation test result is similar to the prediction. Therefore the result should be reliable.
