I am pleased to present the annual Research Reportof the Heart and Stroke Foundation, whichcaptures the Foundation’s investments inresearch for 2001/2002 and lists the outstandinginvestigators that we are so very proud to support.

Created in 1956, the Foundation has led the wayin fighting heart disease and stroke through itssupport of high quality research. Over the years,we have invested more than $740 million inresearch.

Today, our research agenda is as ambitious as itwas for our founders. We are dedicated tofinding innovative ways to fund the bestscience, keeping bright young minds in Canadaand working in partnership with others toachieve the best possible results. This research ismade possible by the generous support ofCanadians.

It is an engaging time to work in this field.Recent medical advances are pushing thefrontier. An aging population is making ourtask more challenging as we race to findimportant answers to keep people healthier,longer. The federal government has opened thedoors to new opportunities for fundingthrough the Canadian Institutes of HealthResearch (CIHR), stimulating uniquepartnerships. The momentum is here, and weall stand to benefit.

During these exciting but demanding times, theHeart and Stroke Foundation continues to supportresearch excellence through its various fundingprograms. Je suis heureux de présenter le Rapport de rechercheannuel de la Fondation des maladies du cœur, qui faitétat des investissements en recherche de la Fondationpour la période 2001-2002 et présente la liste deschercheurs que nous sommes si fiers de financer.

Depuis ses débuts en 1956, la Fondation desmaladies du cœur a donné le ton dans la lutte contreles maladies du cœur et l’accident vasculaire cérébral(AVC) en finançant la recherche de qualité. Au coursdes années, nous avons investi plus de 740␣ millionsde dollars en recherche.

Aujourd’hui, notre programme de recherche est aussiambitieux que l’était celui de nos fondateurs. Nous nousemployons à trouver des façons originales de financer lameilleure recherche scientifique, à garder au Canadanos brillants jeunes cerveaux et à collaborer avec despartenaires en vue d’atteindre les meilleurs résultatspossibles. Et ce sont les généreux dons des Canadienset des Canadiennes qui permettent cette recherche.

Les temps sont propices aux travaux dans ce domaine.Les récentes découvertes médicales ouvrent de nouvellesperspectives. Le vieillissement de la population rendnotre tâche plus difficile, une véritable course, danscette quête de réponses qui permettront à lapopulation canadienne d’être plus en santé, pluslongtemps. Le gouvernement fédéral a ouvert laporte à de nouvelles possibilités de financement parle truchement des Instituts de recherche en santé duCanada (IRSC), qui stimulent la formation departenariats nouveaux. From coast-to-coast, Canada has a communityof scientists who are outstanding — people likeDr. Donald Welsh from the University ofCalgary. He is the recipient of the 2001/2002MacDonald Scholarship, an award given tothe highest rated scholar funded by theFoundation. His exceptional work in vascularbiology may one day lead to new treatments forcoronary and cerebral vasospasm. Hiscolleague, Dr. Michael Hill, also in Calgary,received the Foundation’s Henry J.M. BarnettResearch Scholarship for his work to advanceour understanding of acute ischemic stroke.

Many more individuals are quietly making theirown remarkable contribution: research teamsspending long hours in the laboratories, hospitalsand communities; young people with a dream oftheir first student fellowship; volunteers promotingheart-healthy living and raising money for research;and Canadians making their first donation.

Heart disease and stroke remain the leadingcause of death and disability in Canada.Preventing the onset of disease and improvingthe quality of life for Canadians with diseaseare enormous challenges. But we will bethere—in a heartbeat.

D’un bout à l’autre du Canada, des scientifiques sedémarquent, comme le fait Dr␣ Donald Welsh, del’université de Calgary, titulaire pour 2001-2002 de laBourse de recherche McDonald, attribué par laFondation au chercheur universitaire qui a reçu la cotela plus élevée. Ses travaux exceptionnels en biologievasculaire pourraient un jour conduire à denouveaux traitements de l’angiospasme coronarienet cérébral. Son collègue, Dr␣ Michael Hill, égalementde Calgary, a reçu la bourse de recherche HenryJ.␣ M.␣ Barnett de la Fondation pour ses travaux quinous aideraient à mieux comprendre l’AVCischémique aigu.

Highlights of the Report

This year’s Research Report provides an overview of programsfunded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation between July 1, 2001and June 30, 2002. It includes both national and provincialFoundation research activities.

Appendix A features all of the Grants-in-Aid by province, AppendixB includes Personnel Awards, and Appendix C lists other invest-ments in heart and stroke research. Also included in this report arethe fellows supported by the Heart and Stroke Scientific ResearchCorporation of Canada (HSSRCC) – a separate, non-profitcorporation that aims to build research capacity in Canada throughfellowship awards.

This document is a useful reference tool for the research commu-nity, other research funding agencies, academic institutions andvolunteers and staff throughout the Foundation. You will findinformation about the Foundations’ research programs as well asa list of the many outstanding researchers that are supported.Project titles and keywords provide a flavour of the wide range ofresearch that is funded.

In 2001-2002, the Heart and Stroke Foundation invested a total ofover $41,238,000 in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation supported 244 new, up-and-coming researchers through its Personnel Awards. Another 551Grants-in-Aid were awarded across the country, benefiting aneven larger number of individuals who contribute to each researchteam. These figures comprise both ongoing funding and newadditions from the latest competition. Awards listed in this reportrepresent just one year of a two to five-year investment.

The appendices in this report provide information on the manyinstitutes where heart and stroke related research is conducted.Table 1 on page 10 highlights this year’s spending by province.

Almost three quarters of the annual research budget in 2001-2002was allocated to Grants-in-Aid (Figure A on page 10). This directsupport allows research teams to pursue the specific goals oftheir projects and extend the boundaries of cardiovascular andcerebrovascular science.

The Scientific Peer Review ProcessThe Heart and Stroke Foundation is proud to be the largestinvestor in heart disease and stroke research in Canada, thanksin large part to generous donations from the public and a tremen-dous force of volunteers.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Scientific Review Committeeis responsible for one of the most important functions of theorganization, the scientific peer review process. Some 125 ofCanada’s top cardiovascular and cerebrovascular scientistscontribute their time to ensure the Foundation funds applicantswho meet the highest standards of excellence. This past year,over 700 applications were reviewed for funding.

The Foundation’s national office administers the majority ofPersonnel Awards (new investigator awards, fellowships, doctoralresearch awards and visiting scientist awards). Grants-in-Aid areadministered through the associated provincial Foundation wherethe application originates. The Scientific Review Committee,along with the input of hundreds of external reviewers, evaluateseach application. Final funding decisions are made by theprovincial Foundation.

Les grandes lignes du rapport

Le rapport de la recherche de cette année donne un aperçu desprogrammes de financement de la Fondation des maladies du cœurpour la période allant du 1er juillet 2001 au 30 juin 2002. Il rend comptedes activités de recherche nationales et provinciales de la Fondation.

L’annexe A porte sur les subventions par province, l’annexe B, sur lesbourses et l’annexe C présente la liste des autres investissements enrecherche sur les maladies du cœur et l’accident vasculaire cérébral(AVC). Le rapport inclut également les jeunes chercheurs que finance laSociété de recherche sur les maladies du cœur du Canada (SRMCC),compagnie sans but lucratif qui contribue à la formation dechercheurs au Canada par l’attribution de bourses deperfectionnement.

Ce rapport est un outil de référence utile pour les chercheurs, lesautres organismes de financement de la recherche, les universitésainsi que les bénévoles et le personnel de la Fondation. Vous ytrouverez de l’information sur les programmes de recherche de laFondation et une liste des nombreux chercheurs remarquables quireçoivent du financement. Les noms des projets et les mots clésvous donneront une idée du large éventail de recherches financées.

En 2001-2002, la Fondation des maladies du cœur a investi unesomme totale de plus de 41 238 000 $ dans la recherchecardiovasculaire et cérébrovasculaire.

La Fondation des maladies du cœur a remis une bourse à244 nouveaux jeunes chercheurs prometteurs. L’attribution de551 subventions à la grandeur du pays a profité à un nombre encoreplus grand de personnes, membres des équipes de recherchefinancées. Ces chiffres englobent le financement en cours et lenouveau financement, consécutif au dernier concour. La liste desbourses présentées dans le rapport représente une seule annéed’un financement s’étalant sur deux à cinq ans.

Les annexes du rapport fournissent de l’information sur les nombreuxinstituts qui font de la recherche liée au cœur et à l’AVC. Le tableau 1de la page 10 présente le financement par province.

Près des trois quarts du budget de recherche annuel de 2001-2002sont allés à la recherche (figure A, page 10). Ce financement directpermet aux équipes de recherche de poursuivre les objectifspropres à leurs projets et d’étendre les conaissances en matière dela science cardiovasculaire et cérébrovasculaire.

L’examen scientifique par les pairsLa Fondation des maladies du cœur s’enorgueillit d’être le plusimportant organisme de financement de la recherche sur lesmaladies du cœur et l’AVC au Canada. Cette première place, ellela doit en grande partie aux dons généreux de la population et àune immense armée de bénévoles.

Le Comité d’examen scientifique de la Fondation des maladies ducœur est chargé d’une des fonctions les plus importantes del’organisme, l’examen scientifique par les pairs. Quelque 125 desmeilleurs scientifiques du domaine cardiovasculaire etcérébrovasculaire du Canada investissent de leur temps pourgarantir que les postulants répondent aux normes d’excellenceles plus élevées. L’an dernier, ils ont examiné plus de700 demandes de financement.

Le bureau national de la Fondation administre la majorité desbourses (bourses de nouveau chercheur, bourses deperfectionnement, bourses de recherche au doctorat et bourses dechercheur invité). HSF Research Awards

The Heart and Stroke Foundation remains committed to coreresearch funding through Grants-in-Aid, Personnel Awards, andother investments such as Research Chairs, Program Grants,and Networks of Centres of Excellence.

Grants-in-Aid — A grant to support the operating costs ofconducting research, including laboratory supplies, techni-cians, and some equipment (amounts vary but typicallyrange from $20,000, to a maximum of $200,000 per year).

New Investigator Award (formerly Research Scholarship) —A salary award to support new investigators who wish to establishtheir own independent research laboratory ($50,000 per year forfive years, plus obligatory benefits).

Research Fellowship — A training award for applicants whohave completed a professional degree: MD or PhD (up to $45,000per year for two or three years).

Doctoral Research Award (formerly Research Traineeship) —A training award for graduate students enrolled in a PhD programwho are undertaking full-time research training ($19,030 per yearfor up to four years).

Nursing Research Fellowship — A training award for nursingresearchers enrolled in an MSc/MA, PhD, or research fellowshipprogram ($25,000 per year for up to three years).

Visiting Scientist Award — A salary/travel award that enablesestablished investigators visiting another institution to developand share research expertise.

In addition to the categories above, some of the provincial Heartand Stroke Foundations offer Career Investigator Awards,Summer Student Scholarships, and other specific grants withintheir provinces. Table 2 on page 11 highlights these specialprograms and their amounts.

Supporting Research Across the ContinuumResearch supported by the Foundation is a function of thetypes of applications that are submitted. Funding spans acrossthe full continuum of research (basic biomedical, clinical,health services/systems, population health). For the purpose ofthis report, each project has been classified under thesethemes to provide a broad overview of the funding trendsalthough many projects can be categorized under two or morethemes, depending on methodologies and subject area. Thisyear’s trends by theme are shown in Table 3 and Figures Band C on pages 12 and 13.

La Fondation des maladies du cœur poursuit le financement perma-nent de la recherche par l’entremise de subventions, de bourses etd’autres investissements, comme les chaires de recherche, lesbourses de programme et le réseau des Centres d’excellence.

Subventions — Octroi visant à financer les coûts d’opération destravaux de recherche, dont les fournitures de laboratoire, lestechniciens et de l’équipement (les montants varient, mais sontgénéralement de 20 000 $, jusqu’à un maximum de 200 000 $par année).

Bourse de nouveau chercheur (auparavant bourse de recherche) —Octroi salarial visant à soutenir les nouveaux chercheurs qui désirentétablir leur propre laboratoire de recherche indépendant (50 000 $par année pendant cinq ans, plus les bénéfices obligatoires).

Bourse de perfectionnement en recherche — Bourse deformation pour les demandeurs qui ont obtenu un diplôme profes-sionnel (MD, PhD) (jusqu’à 45 000 $ par année pour deux ou troisans).

Bourse de recherche au doctorat (auparavant bourse de formation enrecherche) — Bourse de formation pour les étudiants inscrits à unprogramme de doctorat qui poursuivent une formation en recherche àtemps plein (19 030 $ par année pendant un maximum de quatreannées).

Bourse de chercheur invité — Bourse salariale et de déplace-ment pour financer la visite d’un chercheur reconnu dans uneautre institution afin de développer et de partager son expertise.

En plus de ces bourses, certains bureaux provinciaux de la Fonda-tion des maladies du cœur offrent, dans leur province, des boursesde chercheur de carrière, des bourses d’étudiant d’été et d’autrestypes de bourses. Le tableau 2 de la page 11 présente ces program-mes spéciaux et les montants qui leur sont alloués.

Financement du continuum de la recherche

Le type de demande présentée détermine le financement queversera la Fondation. Le financement peut couvrir tout le continuumde la recherche (biomédicale fondamentale, clinique, services etsystèmes de santé, santé de la population). Aux fins du rapport,chaque projet a été classé sous un de ces thèmes, de manière àdonner un aperçu général des courants de financement (même si denombreux projets peuvent être classés sous deux thèmes ou plus,selon les méthodes utilisées et le sujet de recherche). Fostering New Partnershipsin Research

The Heart and Stroke Foundation created a Heart and StrokeFoundation Research Fund in October 2000 to build on itsstrengths in supporting research and to capitalize on newopportunities. The HSF Research Fund supports strategicareas of research, in partnership with other funding agencies,including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).A series of exciting new funding initiatives were launched inpartnership with the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respi-ratory Health (ICRH) over the summer of 2001. Funding isnow underway for many of these projects. A separate reportwill highlight these initiatives and the awardees. Details can befound at www.hsf.ca/research .

Canada (FMCC). Son rôle est de promouvoir et desoutenir la formation de chercheurs canadiens dans

les domaines cardiovasculaire et vasculairecérébral. Par son programme de bourses enrecherche, la Société vise à mettre sur pied ungroupe de nouveaux scientifiques au Canadadont les travaux se pencheront sur lesdécouvertes récentes.

Depuis sa fondation en 1992 par la Fondationdes maladies du cœur du Canada et la Société

canadienne de cardiologie, la SRMCC a investi plusde 2,7 millions de dollars pour soutenir les travaux de

58 chercheurs. Ce programme existe grâce à lacontribution et à l’appui soutenus de chefs de file de

l’industrie pharmaceutique, notamment AstraZenecaCanada, Pfizer Canada Inc., Hoffmann-La Roche, et MerckFrosst Canada Inc.

The Heart and Stroke Scientific Research Corporation ofCanada (HSSRCC) is a stand alone/independent non-profitcorporation. The HSSRCC is dedicated to promoting andsupporting the training of Canada’s researchers incardiovascular and cerebrovascular sciences.Through this research fellowship program, theCorporation is working to develop a cadre ofnew scientists in Canada whose research willbuild on the discoveries of today.

Since it was founded by the Heart and StrokeFoundation of Canada and the CanadianCardiovascular Society in 1992, the HSSRCChas invested over $2.7 million to support 58research fellows. This program is made possible bythe continued contributions and support from leadingpharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca Canada,Pfizer Canada Inc., Hoffmann-La Roche, and Merck FrosstCanada Inc.
