How to Data Recovery via Terminal Mode of HD Doctor for Seagate

Presently, many ST hd repair cases come to our lab, here we made a case study to show how to

recover data via Terminal Mode of HD Doctor for Seagate. we all know that The difference

between Seagate HDD and other Brand hard drives is that all diagnosis are done via terminal

mode (CMD Mode). Seagate HDD can works in ATA interface and COM interface. Once the HDD

works in COM interface, it will output message to the log telling working status after power reset.

Therefore, we can decide what to do next according to the info in terminal mode.

Picture 1 terminal mode

the above picture is the terminal log of a SATA HDD, which works normally. We can know that

drive family is PUMA2; ROM version is 0.03; and firmware version is 3.03. "Buzz – Head Mask

FFFF –Switch to full int." means the head is good and working well. "Spin Ready" means motor

works well and reaches the required speed. "SATA Reset" tells that drive is ready.

However, if HDD fails to boot or works unmorally, it will output error message to the log, e.g.,

"Stuff was unreadable", "OVERLAY FAILED" etc. "Stuff was unreadable" means stuff is corrupted,

while “OVERLAY FAILED” means ATA is corrupted. We need to overwrite the original firmware

with a donor firmware to repair such problems of the hdd.

Picture 3 ATA corruption

sometimes, we need only to overwrite donor firmware and sometimes we need to use diagnostic

commands to analysis further. When you input a command in the terminal model interface, the

HDD will respond accordingly to it. For example, if you press keyboard [Ctrl] + [Z], the HDD will

return a prompt "T >" (for Barracuda 7200.11, it's "F3 T>").

We are engineers form IRS international data recovery service, and We will introduce more usage

of different command orders. Meanwhile we have all the reliable HDD repair and data recovery

tools from SalvationDATA Technology and ACE lab. If you have any failed HDD and have essential

data to be retrieved back, you can contact us, by following methods:
