Intro

• Our goal is to suggest alternates to the teaching methods we saw when observing Hartford classrooms

• The classrooms are very diverse but there is limited material taught about the different cultures of the students

• To fix this, we are teaching a curriculum on musical history, and how music can shape a culture or heritage

shantel
"fix an issue" sounds awkward to me. Maybe say "suggest alternates to the teaching methods or curriculum you observed through your placements". Or you can just start with your second bullet and take out fix and put "We suggest an alternative curriculum that addresses this issue..." something like that.

Plan

• 1 ½ hours for five days will be devoted to this topic

• Students will pick a particular song from their culture and research when this song was written in their cultures history, and for what purpose

• At the end of the week students will present a project to the class about their own culture

shantel
write this in number form so its easier to read on powerpoint. For you paper you can put it in word form but say "one and a half hours per day..."
shantel
Not sure that you need the last two bullets because you will mention that when you show your grid. You should probably change this slide to "demographics" where you talk about the grade you are targeting, the make of the class (gender, race, ethnic), location of the school etc. Also you should add a justification slide that includes the Connecticut state standards or gardner's multiple intelligences or any other sources you used to justify their curriculum. This justification slide should go right after this slide.

Objective 1

• Students will gain an understanding of the importance of personal identity and how heritage plays an important role in this concept.

shantel
So I think that you should put all your objectives on the same slide and then take the justifications that you placed after each and make that into one slide. Also for the powerpoint you do not need to include quotes from the readings or outside sources thats for you paper. You will not have enough time to talk about the justification of each objective so figure out which ones seem the most important or cut them down just for the presentation.

Objective 2

• Students will develop intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence skills through research of their own cultures and presentations

Page 6: How Music Forms a Culture Madelaine Feakins Emily Meehan

Objective 3

• Students will be exposed to music from various cultures

Page 7: How Music Forms a Culture Madelaine Feakins Emily Meehan

Objective 4• Students will learn that music differs between

cultures and develop an understanding of how music expresses a cultures experiences, beliefs, and values.o One history standard for fourth graders in

Hartford is to “analyze and evaluate human action in historical and/or contemporary contexts from alternative points of view (cite evidence to explain the various feelings/points of view of people in a historical situation and predict various points of view people might have on a contemporary issue).”

• Teacher, Linda Christensen stressed the importance of taking social action in the communityo “my students walk out the school door to social emergency...I believe

that writing is a basic skill that will help them both understand that emergency and work to change it” (Christensen, 162).

shantel
way formated seems confusing to me. make the second part a sub bullet maybe
shantel
i understand what you are trying to do but for the presentation you want to just keep it concise and simple so the judges can understand you dont have to include the explanation of how workinging in pairs increase interpersonal skills, u can say that verball when you present if you want though.
Page 10: How Music Forms a Culture Madelaine Feakins Emily Meehan

Evaluation

• Presentation in front of the class

• Students can grade each other

• Grade based on whether or not we believe they met the objectiveso they gained an understanding of the importance of

personal identity and how heritage plays an important role in this concept.

o They gained an understanding of how music expresses a cultures experiences, beliefs, and values.

shantel
what about the exam makes it not an accurate representation of knowledge of the students? again you dont have to mention that you wont have exams the evaluators should infer this if you do not mention it. You can however mention it in your paper if you want.
shantel
not necessary
