How Does Spiritual Wellness Relate to Health? There is some research that links spiritual wellness with physical well-being.Spiritual wellness can bring comfort and lend strength for handling life’s challenges. Some people find that tending to the spirit seems to be as healing as medicine itself.

What does it mean to be well?We all have different ideas of what it means to feel well. When you feel fully well, is there also a spiritual part to feeling satisfied and engaged? When you are physically unwell or your stress level is high, how can spiritual wellness help you? Many people who are seriously ill or dying, for example, look to their spirituality to help them cope. What about your spiritual wellness? If you’re wondering about your spiritual wellness, it might help to ask yourself some questions. In doing so, you are giving attention to things that you may not think about every day. You can become more aware of what’s important to you.

What am I thankful for? How do I feel when I focus on gratitude? What are my sources of strength? What gives my life meaning? When do I feel fully alive? What life experiences are meaningful for me?Are there sacraments or rituals that are meaningful for me?Is a faith community important for me right now?How is community in general important for me? What can you do to enhance your spiritual wellness?

For some people, making time for a spiritual practice is a key part of their wellness. Some take time to be in nature, to meditate, or to pray. Others spend time with music, art, or poetry, in motion or quiet. Many people pay special attention to beauty, loving kindness, gratitude, healing, or faith in a higher being.

What is spiritual for you is very personal. It is for you to define. But that doesn’t mean that you have to explore spiritual questions and ideas by yourself. You can share with and learn from others however you like. If you are struggling, you can look to a chaplain, a counselor, or a trusted member of your community for support.Article adapated from: http://www.webmd.com/balance/tc/spirituality-and-your-health-topic-overview?page=2

Wellness Center Welcomes New StaffName: Justin ParksJob Title: Outdoor Programs CoordinatorJob Description: I oversee the climbing wall, outdoor rentals program (for canoes, camping gear, and whatever else you need to get out and adventure), and the outdoor trips program (taking groups out to places like Palisades and the Black Hills to learn different activities such as backpacking and climbing). What led you to this position? The chance to start an outdoor program in a new part of the country and continue to do what I am passionate about at an institution where I believe that I can have an impact. About me: I was raised in Bakersfield, CA but did my undergraduate work at Roanoke College in VA where I played baseball and got involved with outdoor recreation as a potential career. That led me to Louisiana State University where I worked with their outdoor program while I attained my Master’s Degree; which has led me here to South Dakota to start a new chapter in my life! Hobbies: Any adventure activity (Backpacking, Mountain Biking, Climbing, Paddling, etc.) and Sports (especially baseball, football, and soccer). What are you looking forward to the most about working in the Wellness Center?Getting to start a new program, doing what I am passionate about, and sharing the wonderful opportunities that nature provides here in South Dakota with our Wellness Center students and members!

How To Prepare For The College Transition…

The move to college is a major life transition, which implies there will be a period of adjustment. In addition to tougher classes, a new living environment and lifestyle, and a dramatic new level of independence, some of the biggest obstacles new college freshman will face have practical solutions.

Let the Boy Scout motto of, “be prepared” be the anthem of your transition from high school senior to college freshman. From fighting homesickness to being prepared for a medical crisis, college can provide students with a chance to reinvent themselves and to really shine. Admittedly, the transition to adulthood is not easy, but in the process of learning how to prepare for college, you are also learning about how to prepare for life as a young adult.

For many freshman, going to college will be the first time they will be spending a considerable amount of time away from the comforts of home and the people who love them. Your relationships with family and friends are special, but remember those relationships didn’t just happen. You had a lot to do with making those relationships special. You are an interesting and unique individual who will be surrounded by hundreds of other interesting and unique individuals. You will have to go out and make an effort to meet people in order to establish friendships. There are a variety of student groups and organizations who will be welcoming new members in the fall. These organizations are a ready-made group of friends who already share common interests. Statistics show that students who are engaged in campus activities have a higher rate of graduation than students who don’t participate in student groups and clubs.

It is important to stay in touch with family and friends from back home. There are an infinite number of ways that technology can help you to maintain those important relationships. There is an ancient saying that goes something like, “make new friends, but keep the old; some are silver and others are gold.”

No matter how careful you are, injuries and illness can and do happen. Knowing what to do is one of the smartest ways to prepare for college. Learn about your health insurance plan. Bring an insurance card with you to school. If you have been managing a medical or mental health issue, make arrangements with your hometown doctor or counselor to have your medical records sent to Student Health Clinic and Counseling Services. You can reach the Student Health Clinic and Counseling Services by calling 605-688-4157.

Finally, college and university life is a place for learning. Embracing the diversity within the student body and learning about other people who are different from you will often teach you how alike we really are. Embracing diversity allows you to gain a greater perspective on the world we all share, and when your graduate and become an alum of SDSU, you can feel equally proud of who you know as you do about what you know.

Have a great freshman experience.
