The economic cost of road accidents in LAC is roughly US$19 billion annually. Worldwide it’s US$65 billion, and will skyrocket to US$100 billion by 2020 if nothing is done*

The Bank has begun this work at the regional level through the Mesoamerica corridor
Road safety assessment of LAC countries
The Bank jointly with the “ Asociación Española de Carreteras” carried out a regional diagnostic of road safety in 26 countries
Road safety plans/strategies: development and enhancement of action plans
The Bank, jointly with strategic partners, is supporting LAC countries in designing action plans to set targets for reducing road traffic injuries
The Bank is supporting and helping to develop action plans for RS in the cities of Cali, Colombia, Brasilia and Belem do Para, Brazil

The Bank will developing innovative projects to improve safety in commercial fleets and training drivers
Latin American New Car Assessment Programme(Latin NCAP)
The Bank jointly with FIA Foundation is in the process of developing a protocol assessment aimed to evaluate the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold in the Americas. It will assure the vehicles produced in our region meet the same standards of the one produced outside the region

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Road improvement Program operation in Jamaica (US$15M)
Loan operation assigned to the GoJ to finance a comprehensive RS program that includes performance- based road maintenance and institutional strengthening of the RS unit at the Ministry of Transport and Works
“Safe Corridor” Demonstration Program in Haiti
The Bank, jointly with 3M, is assisting the government of Haiti in its reconstruction efforts after the January 2010 earthquake, including the improving of the country main roads to improve RS and educate the community with a focus on prevention of traffic fatalities
Safe taxi drivers pilot project in the city of Natal, Brazil
The Bank jointly with GRSP* is developing a pilot project in thecity of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil to enhance the taxi drivers’ service and to address the key risk factors associated to road traffic crashes using

“Safe Corridor” Demonstration Program inHaiti
The Bank, jointly with 3M, will develop and implement a road safety project in the corridor of Bon Repos to Saint Marc, one of the main road of Haiti
The aim is to transform this corridor from a highly unsafe corridor to a “safe corridor” and demonstrate the effectiveness and benefits to invest in road safety actions.
The intention is then to use the experience and anticipated success from this demonstration to scale up to include other corridors under subsequent Bank’s rehabilitation loans.
This is a great example of a private- public partnership working together in improving road safety in Haiti!!

ACTIVITIES DESCRIPTION
Strengthening data collection on road traffic injuries and deaths
Regional RS Observatory:The Bank is working with PAHO / WHO for the creation of a regional RS observatory to improve data collection on fatal and non-fatal traffic injuries and a study of good practices related to motorcycle –related injury prevention
Road safety regional campaign, with emphasis in youth
The Bank promotes –regionally and in a country basis-audiovisual inputs, such as TV spots and graphic material, to support the implementation of massive campaigns
Partnership with MTV to develop a program on RS
Strengthening RS research

Cost-benefits studies on RS in Bogota, Colombia
The Bank jointly with the Universidad de los Andes is conducting an study to assess the cost-benefits of invest in RS within the urban context and to measure the impact of BRT’s in reducing road traffic injuries
Development of a book “A fresh approach to road safety”
The Bank is producing a practical guide to be used by practitioners in the implementation of RS programs in LAC countries
Study to define the economic impact of road traffic injuries in selected countries of the region
The Bank jointly with Johns Hopkins University will conduct an study to costing the impact of road traffic injuries in selected countries of the region
