“Most people who call us want a fresh look,” says MonsourTaghdisi of Prestige Builders. “They are usually takenaback by what can be done (to their home). In their mind,

it’s usually major work, but when I come in, I can find minor ways tomake major changes. And sometimes their wishlist is not as expensive asthey think.”

These days, the company’s name is somewhat of a misnomer. Since thehousing market cooled, Prestige Builders does fewer new builds and farmore remodels/renovations. The shift is an opportunity for Taghdisi andhis staff to work creatively within the challenging bounds of an existinghome and, sometimes, a limited budget.

READY TO REMODELPrestige Builders handles remodels of all shapes and sizes, from a singlebathroom to a comprehensive renovation, like the year-long project at theDavis home. The 4,500-square-foot home was a one-level mid-century-modern home in Tanglewood (amid a sea of cookie-cutter, two-level newbuilds). The home had under gone little to no renovation since originalconstruction 50 years ago.

After 12 months of major renovations led by Prestige Builders andArchitect George Cole, the Davises moved into their dream home. Andnow they’ll recommend Prestige Builders to anyone.

Kelly Davis had ideas and visions when she initially hired PrestigeBuilders, but she says, Taghdisi always took things further, expanding herimagination to create the perfect design. His ideas were often subtle butimpactful, like widening the passage and raising the ceilings of the home’shallways. The change was drastically beautiful.

“(Taghdisi) took on the house,” she says. “It was like it was his own.And he really wanted to stay true to the house and keep its original person-ality.”

One of Davis’ favorite changes Taghdisi made is knocking down the wallto one bedroom that is now the children’s playroom. This opened up theentire house, she says, creating a flow to the space and providing a view toa large, beautiful backyard – not to mention the kids when she’s in thekitchen.

And all of that stress, frustration and strain that remodels often createwas next to nonexistent for Davis. “I knew that it was being taken care of,”she says.

At night, when their two young daughters are in bed and life quiets,Kelly Davis and her husband sit down and appreciate the newly renovatedhome in which they moved last December. “It’s so comfortable,” Davissays. “It seems like everything was always here.”

COMMITTED TO QUALITYComing from a family in the business, it was only natural for Taghdisi tolaunch Prestige Builders 15 years ago. The full-service company, whichincludes an interior designer and graphic designer, handles new builds andremodels from start to finish. Services range from finding a lot on which tobuild and an architect to design it, or planning and overseeing a wide varietyof renovation projects.

Taghdisi, who’s known for a clean and fresh style, begins a project with acost-free consultation to learn what potential clients want and how he canprovide that. One of the first questions he poses before a remodel is probablythe most important: In what part of the house do you live the most? It couldbe the master bedroom, the kitchen or the living room. It doesn’t matter – thisis where the most time and money should be spent.

Supervision. Supervision. And more supervision, Taghdisi says, is key to asuccessful project. He is realistic with his clients as far as the time and cost aremodel or new build will take. Still, he realizes the process can be, and oftenis, stressful.

“I make sure I’m always available to my clients,” he says. “Answering theircalls and emails all the time is very, very important.”

Worldly WowDevoted readers of Houston House & Home,Brendan and Denise called me because theywanted to update their dining room at mini-mal cost.

BY JOETTA MOULDEN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

Devoted readers of Houston House & Home, Brendanand Denise called me because they wanted to update theirdining room at minimal cost. Denise liked the fact that Iworked with their existing furnishings using paint and fabricto make them work, instead of starting over. They needed tounite the entire downstairs with fabric and paint since allthese spaces could be seen from the entry hall.

“You had a look around the whole house to get an ideaof what we had and what color choices we had already madeand you also knew where to buy fabrics, who to go to havechair seats made, etc.,” said Denise. “We were relatively newto Houston, having just moved from England with our mixof inherited and purchased furnishings from our varioustravels around the world, so your knowledge was most help-ful and a time and money saver.”

Colors and cultures take a dining roomfrom bland to spicy

BEFORE: The yellow woodRiempie leather-thongchairs from South Africalooked bare and uncomfort-able. The rug and wall colorlacked contrast and theunderside of the chandelierwas too brassy and bright.

AFTER: An existing mirror, moved from the masterbedroom and hung vertical-ly, is flanked by candle-sticks Denise bought atPier 1 Imports (andBrendan spray painted, along with the chandelier).A mirrored tray withDenise’s silver pitcher col-lection proved a betterscale for the sideboard.Existing framed artworkwas hung above eachchair. A collection ofantique silver napkin ringsdresses the table's nap-kins.

Their new house had builder beige walls and the couple could notdecide on paint colors. My challenge was to introduce them to color with-out scaring them.

“You took your cues for paint from choices we had already made, likethe Ralph Lauren ‘Broome’ we had used in the nearby powder room,” saysDenise. “It worked well in the dining room and entry below the chair railand you selected Benjamin Moore ‘Tyler Taupe’ above the dining roomchair rail. In the entry hall, you suggested a coordinating slightly lightercolor above the chair rail, Benjamin Moore ‘Shaker Beige,’ which we likedso much we used it nearly everywhere.”

TIP: In a traditional formal dining room, it is important to create a casual, friendly seating arrangement that invites guests to enter and sit down.Choose practical fabrics that you can imagine both adults and children sit-ting on.

Denise was happy that I found a pair of framed etchings by South Africanartist Tinus DeJongh. I recommended they hang them above the chairs oneach side of the sideboard.

She was surprised by my suggestion to have cotton cheetah-print cush-ions custom-made for the dining chairs and I gave her my workroom sourceto have them made. “I cannot believe how good they look with the redBokhara rug. I brought home two samples of cheetah fabric from InteriorFabrics, (a treasure-trove of affordable fabrics) laid them both on the rug atyour suggestion and instantly saw that the darker sample, Earth, could livebeautifully with the area rug.”

TIP: Bringing along written, thorough measurements, sketches and fabricswhile shopping helps eliminate making expensive mistakes and ensureeverything is happy together.

Denise appreciated the fact that I indicated where paint should stop andstart and how far the paint should go on the slanted stairwell ceiling, whichshe thought was part of the entry hall. “You explained that when sitting atthe dining table we could see the entry hall, so that space needed to blendwith the dining room,” Denise said.

TIP: Once the flooring, rug, seating and fabrics are finalized, then paintcolors can be chosen. Paint consistently gives the most bang for your buck.

Denise just kept checking items off from her homework list as workprogressed. All she had to do was pick the final fabric she liked and take itto the workrooms I suggested to get the work done. “The written plan yougave us had specific sizes and greatly cut down on the time I would havewasted looking at and weighing choices,” Denise explained.

“Since we wanted to have ‘flow’ between the downstairs rooms, we arepleased that the rooms now look pulled together,” Denise said. “Despite thelong list of homework you left us, decorating suddenly seemed doable andnot so overwhelming. We had a plan we could move forward with, andliked the fact that you gave us firm guidance but left the final choice up tous.”

Denise said it greatly helped her to have a professional view her prob-lems with a fresh, detached perspective. Knowing how and where to getthings done expedites the process and makes it more manageable, she said.“Otherwise, I think you become overwhelmed by the choices and are

• Get creative. Painting an existing verdigrisclock and picture frame can tie them intoyour décor for pennies on the dollar.

• Sometimes the most effective strategy isnot to buy more furniture and accessoriesfor your home, but to first rethink thepieces that are already paid for.

BEFORE: A lack of wall paint contrast and mis-matched brass frames were spoiling the entryhall’s impact.

AFTER: In the entry/stairwell, the large roos-ter was moved to the top of an antique benchfrom the TV room. Two-tone wall paint alongwith brown metallic paint on the once-verdigrisclock and brass frame add much-needed con-trast to the space.

What do friends and family think of thechanges? “Everyone loves the final new sim-ple look and how comfortable the roomsfeel,” Denise said. “You have taken the stressout of decorating, and I learned I really like aclutter-free look, because it makes me feelbetter and more relaxed,” she said. WHAT TO PLANT NOW FOR SPRING & SUMMER HARVEST

By SANDRA COOK

Plant Your Veggies

February is prime time for planting vegetables thatwill yield delicious results through the warm months. We asked Beverly Welch of Arbor Gate to recommend vegetables andherbs that yield spring and summer. Another great resource is UrbanHarvest, Houston’s homegrown organization that educates the publicabout fruit, vegetable, and habitat gardening. (See resource box at right.)

Welch recommends planting peppers, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, green beans. These crops are great for beginners. Peppers and squash willproduce all through the summer. For the more experienced, tomatoesand asparagus are fun to try. Be sure to choose tomatoes that are provenperformers in our area. With asparagus, planting from seed means a 3-year wait before the first harvest. You can plant 1-year-old crowns to har-vest after the year.

Many herbs love Houston’s warm climate, so it’s easy to grow anabundance of fragrant, flavor boosting herbs to enhance your cooking.Welch suggests spicing up your garden and your meals with thyme, oregano, globe basil, prostrate rosemary, chives, salad burnet, marjoramand dwarf sage.

Trade your shopping cart for a basketful of produce from your own garden.

WATCH IT GROWAs your garden develops, Welchsays proper watering and organ-ic fertilization are musts; theneeds of each species will vary.Welch also advises to keep aneye out for disease or insectdamage, and to stay on top ofyour weed control. Weeds willrob you plants both of waterand fertilizer.

Also, pay attention to prop-er spacing – crowded plantsbecome weak plants. Be sure towater in the early morning, avoid over-watering, and waterthe soil not the plant to avoidsun scorch.

For new homes: Reduce energy billsby up to 70 percent compared tobasic insulation. Call us, your buildermay not be familiar with foam insula-tion, but that does not mean you can’thave all the benefits. We will explainto you and your builder insulating anew home with foam often costs verylittle considering the savings on otherbuilding materials. If this is a homeyou plan to live in for a while or hopeto sell at a profit, then talk to us tolearn the benefits of foam insulation. Many homes only cost an additional$1000-$3000 for foam. Ask aboutour Energy Wise guarantee.

For existing homes: No Problem! Wecan Foam your attic creating a semi-conditioned attic, and usually dropyour bills by about 30 percent. Someowners have seen savings of over 50percent. All are more comfortablewith summer attic temps in the 70sto mid-80s. Foam insulation byRock-Crete also helps in winter bynot allowing your warm air to escape.

Example 1: Mason’s 2652-sq. ft.,two-story new home with a 3.5-tonair unit previously had bills thatranged from $75 to $125. Today, theA/C bill averages just $42.22 permonth after one year (confirmed by aseparate meter). What is your Bill?

Example 2: Paul Padron’s existing onestory home saved over 45 percent on

his heating bills this winter. He can’twait to see his summer bills!

Example 3: The Allen’s electric bill ontheir single story dropped $1,727.75over a full year, with a huge drop inAugust from $550 to $194, a $356savings! They are ecstatic.

Example 4: Mr. Exley’s Missouri Cityresidence experienced approximately50 percent in savings after foam insu-lation. The neighbors, the Swansons, saw a 30-percent savings. Both arenow able to enjoy the second storiesof their homes without sweating inthe summertime and they are morecomfortable in the winter also.

Example 5: A commercial machineshop’s large metal building so hotthat working inside was impossibleduring the afternoon. Mr. Alley hadpurchased seven large commercialA/C units to cool it. After installingfoam insulation by Rock-Crete, theynow use just one unit.

Example 6: Heather Mathews, had a2200-sq. ft. home in which we usedour product to create a sealed atticspace. Not only did her attic humidi-ty go down, but with average billingshe was able to go from $570.00 permonth down to $240.00 per month;she tells everyone she can!

The success stories above are realexamples of jobs that we have done.Rock-Crete Foam Insulators has nowbeen in business seven years, and isone of the most respected and largestnames in foam insulation the region. We regularly confer with builders, architects, HVAC contractors, andhomeowners. We feel it is our job tomake sure you have the lowest utilitybills in your neighborhood. This iswhy we install our product withhigher quality installation methods. We strive to offer the best price, but we always deliver the best performance. Thanks, for helping us remain No. 1!

Rock-Crete Foam Insulatorshelps lower utility bills

Greg Pruitt Owner of Rock-CreteFoam Insulators, realized huge energysavings when he installed foam in hisown two-story home.

Foam insulation is the only productthat will solve the hot upstairs associ-ated with all two-story homes. Theblessing is with all two-story homesyou have less roof deck and therefore amuch lower price for foam insulation.

“I’d Turn Back If I Were You”, the sign warned as Dorothyand her crew approached the haunted forest and the witchescastle. And that's my advice to anyone who approaches a

Mark Twain said, “The secret of getting ahead isgetting started. The secret of getting started isbreaking your complex overwhelming tasks into

small manageable ones, then starting on the first one.”

Your first task after you have found the perfect gardendesigner is the design phase. It's your blueprint for gettingstarted with your project and culminates with the plandrawing.

Le Corbusier, the famous architect and designer whodedicated himself to providing better living conditions forpeople said "Space, light and order - those are the thingsthat men need just as much as they need bread or a place tosleep." The design phase is all about order and space plan-ning and is vital to getting a project off to the right startand keeping it on track. When done properly, it saves every-one time, money and frustration and provides moreoptions. For instance if you want to install in phases thenit's absolutely necessary.

Producing a great garden plan requires much thoughtand planning and all the thinking takes place during thedesign phase. A good garden designer won't let you rushthrough it. Because there are many more aspects to gardendesign than most people realize, the possibilities are endless.Arbors, gazebos, pergolas, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, landscape lighting, retaining walls, pools, spas, pathways, putting greens, fire features, irrigation and drainage, trellis-es, awnings, and fencing, are just the beginning of youroptions when it comes to an outdoor garden room.

The garden plan is the place to record and organize allof your thoughts wishes and dreams. The garden designeruses the plan to easily convey his ideas to the client as wellas to predict the project cost. That's the all important pur-pose of the plan drawing. But it's only the tip of the ice-berg. Always drawn to scale, the plan drawing illustratesthe finished product complete with architecture, hardscap-ing, flora and fauna. In the hands of a capable artist, therendered plan is, in and of itself, a work of art.

Most people realize that your garden is an extension ofyour home and it reflects your personality. But what theydon't realize is that when it's done properly, with the helpof a seasoned professional to guide you and make certain allaspects of the plan are thought through then executed cor-rectly, your garden or garden room will appeal to anyoneincluding the next owner - regardless of the style. That notonly makes your new garden room a tangible investment -according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, the proper landscaping can add 20 percent or more to ahome's resale value - but a place where you'll want to spend

as much, or more time, than your indoors. If your goal is abeautiful garden room, then solid garden plans, and theservices of a talented garden designer, are definitely worththe investment and time they require.

A garden designer is someone who enjoys and under-stands the merging of art and science into a display of beau-ty that relates to the buildings, with nature and that func-tions as intended. Form always follows function and thedesigner uses his creativity to develop a harmonious and aes-thetically peaceful area. In other words, a living breathingfunctioning work of art that not only provides joy but alsocontributes to our blue planet by helping to clean the air webreathe among other benefits. Find one who is comfortableworking with every different style imaginable.

Hiring a garden designer who is also a garden contrac-tor as well as a care provider is a smart consideration. Usingone professional team for your project from start to finishhas advantages. Design professionals experienced in con-struction and garden care develop designs that are practical.Contractors who are sensitive to design are better builders. And consider this: Once your project is complete who bet-ter to care for your garden then they who designed, builtand know it best?

Take all the time you need to seek out the very bestdesign professionals and contractors and experiment withseveral layouts or schematics until you find the one that isjust right for you. Ask to look at your designers body ofwork usually in the form of photographs. Past, current andfuture projects can be examined. Gardeners love to sharetheir fruits of their labor with others and the more of theirwork that you see the better the decisions you will make.Unearth the exact materials you want and don't over lookthe tiniest of details as they will bring you the most pleasureand joy, long after your garden is finished.

Dorothy found her way to Oz because she had a goodplan - follow the yellow brick road. Did she encounter pit-falls along the way? Plenty. Did she overcome them? Yes andyou will too with an experienced professional as navigatorand a garden plan as roadmap. Trust the judgment of thedesigner that you carefully chose and lastly, don't forget tohave fun along the way. Producing then executing the gar-den plan should not wreak emotional havoc. Be certain torelax along the way and enjoy every last minute. It's themost important part. It's the most important part.

Your landscape should complement the style of your home. Forexample, a stately stone home with Palladian arches cries out fora formal garden with closely clipped shrubs, trimmed trees and

well-tended lawns. A low-slung mid-century ranchhouse looks swell withexotic grasses as accents or perhaps a Japanese Zen garden for ambience.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or redoing a landscape, consider hiring a professional designer for the master plan.Google “landscape designers + Houston” or check the YellowPages for landscape designers and look for members who usethe initials “ASLA” behind their names, which means they aremembers of and meet the professional standards of theAmerican Society of Landscape Designers. Also, many nurseriesand plant retailers employ designers who can design and imple-ment an overall scheme for you. Ask to see designers’ portfolios

and/or Web sites to see if their work is a fit for what you want.Choose a style that’s sustainable for the way you and your

family live. If you want a manicured formal garden but aren’twilling to hire professional landscape help and can’t do it your-self, you won’t be able to achieve the look you want.

But when your landscape and house do blend in harmony— and you can’t imagine one without the other — you haveadded enormous value to your home and pleasure to your soul. Here are some types of landscapes to consider.

FORMAL LANDSCAPEFormal landscapes celebrateorder, symmetry and bal-ance. For this mansard-roofed classic French-stylehome, Houston landscapersThompson + Hanson havedesigned a crisp landscapeof carefully pruned shrubsand contained groundcover ina muted palette. The lawn ismeticulously kept.

ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN Rough hewn stones form a curvyborder for this English Country stylegarden by Norm Arnold of GloriousGardens Inc. Many English plantswon’t thrive in Houston’s heat;Arnold substitutes plants suited toHouston’s climate to get the lushcolor palette of England’s fabled gar-dens. Here, masses of bloomingperennials and annuals in happy col-ors bring vibrance to a Houston yard.

He named his company Lucky Dog Designs after rescuing a stray dog that had been run over on the street in front of his workshop.

You could say that Johnson rescues strays with his furniturecreations, too. Johnson salvages things from trash piles, collects materials from house and building demolition sites, picks up driftwood and works with sentimental pieces thatclients bring to him. With this always varied selection of materials, Johnson creates styles, stunning furniture pieces.

“We make a lot of dining tables and bar counters by cutting big planks from downed trees,” says Johnson. “It’srewarding to give something back, when it was a family’sfavorite tree. It’s kind of nice to keep it in the family, instead of shipping if off to a landfill or to be turned into mulch.”

From tree trunks, Johnson creates “live edge” pieces thatmaintain the natural, irregular edge and feature a smooth, refined finish. He also crafts more traditional chests, tables, armoires and more from recycled wood waste. Inspired byevery project, Johnson uses hand tools only to shape, sand, carve and refine the wood as he gives it new life and purpose.

Embarking on a major landscape project takes bothpractical planning and artful vision. Kay Paschall ofEarthcare Horticultural Services advises to first considerhow you will use the space you want to landscape.

Will it just be something pretty to look at or will peopleand pets need to utilize and play in the area? She alsoimmediately evaluates the existing assets and challenges. Are there nice trees, or a stone patio that could beenhanced? Are there drainage issues or a broken sidewalkto be fixed?

Another important step early on is to establish a budget.“As far as the budget goes, think about whether or not youwant to do everything right now or phase things in over aperiod of years,” says Joey Canahuati, a landscape architectwho serves as Irrigation & Drainage Operations Managerfor Moss Landscaping.

“In situations when you want to phase in over time, developing a masterplan is a smart way to go,” says Monica Eatherton, a landscape architect forMoss. According to Eatherton, with proper planning, each stage will looklike a completed plan, not spotty or random.

“If your budget is small, just one or two major specimen plants can make

a big impact,” says Eatherton. “We encourage clients towalk through the nursery and scope out the possibili-ties. If you are busy, working a lot, then keep it simple,But you can get that wow factor on a budget.”

DESIGN APPROACH“Design is the heart of any landscape project,” saysKay Paschall. “Our designs are created using psy-chology, science and art. The psychology is the ‘feel-ing’ of the garden and how this landscape design willbe an invitation to physically enter and enjoy mov-ing throughout the garden. The science is themechanics of the project: form, soils, drainage, plantselection, etc. Finally, the art is the beauty of the gar-den — the aura. The plants, colors, textures all com-

bine to fuse the design elements.”

PLAN FOR KIDS & PETS“Foot traffic from children and pets create interesting challenges forlandscape design and plant selection,” says Paschall. “Children needsoft, yet tough groundcovers. Strategic placement of benches, pots

and other gentle hardscape pieces entice kids to play within the desiredareas.”

Dogs like to patrol the fence line and see what’s happening in theneighborhood. “Pets are so much fun,” raves Paschall. “We leave perime-ters between the fence and shrubbery for chasing squirrels and alwaysleave sights to the front of the home to enable the dogs wait for themailman, or just watch the world go by.”

Dogs can also tear up beds and containers, especially when plantings arenew and the smells of the soil and mulch are fresh. Teach pets to respectboundaries to avoid a landscape heartache.

THE DIRTNaturally, when choosing plants, soil and sun at each specific location arethe top two factors to consider. Canahuati points out that soil can vary evenfrom one side of your lawn to the other, it’s helpful to have soil tested at var-ious locations. Adding more fertile, plant-friendly soil is advised for mostHouston area landscapes, especially when starting from scratch.

Once plants are in the ground, watering frequently is essential until plantsare established. “That’s absolutely one of the most important things to dofor your landscape, considering Houston’s extreme fluctuations of tempera-ture and rainfall,” says Paschall.

So how do you know when a plant is established? “Keep watering oftenuntil you think the plant doesn’t need you so much,” says Canahuati. “Thenback off a bit and see how it does.”

DROUGHTS & DELUGESOur area is famous flash floods and intense heat make addressing drainageand irrigation essential to maintaining an attractive landscape. “Houstonreceives frequent heavy rains, so planning for good drainage is a must,” saysPaschall. “It’s rare for us to install a landscape without an irrigation system, because it just takes too great a commitment from the homeowner in thelong-term.”

“For drainage issues, you have to look at the whole site, including yourneighbors’ property and how it meets yours,” says Canahuati. “Get to knowthe water patterns on the lot and then you can work on redirecting the mas-sive flows of water from a Houston deluge.”

At downspouts, Canahauti recommends adding catch basins underthe lawn’s surface. These are topped with a grate and connected topipes or tubing that direct excess water toward the street or otherappropriate stormwater area, such as a creek or bayou.

Smart irrigation systems make happier yards. Newer ET-based con-trols (ET stands for evapotranspiration, the process by which plantsabsorb water from the ground) help homeowners accurately determinehow much watering their yard requires. If you have an existing sprin-kler system, you can have moisture sensors and moisture sensors tomake the system more efficient.

LIGHT IT UP“If you are going to actually go through the effort to landscape youryard, go ahead and lay the wire and do the lighting,” says Canahauti.Good light allows the beauty of your landscape to shine at night, too. “It makes a huge difference,” says Eatherton. “You can light the façadeof your home and the architectural elements.

Plus, exterior lighting adds a level of security to your home as well. “The function of a property is just as important as the look,” saysCanahuati.

Water Smart Gardeningand Design Native plants — those that naturally occur in our area —tend to require less water than imported plants, but canhandle soggy stretches. Joshua Kornegay, owner ofJoshua’s Native Plants says native species are versatileand durable enough to withstand our weather extremes.

To capture a few gallons from a downpour to use ona not-so-rainy day, place rain barrels at downspout. There are more and more available these days, rangingfrom utilitarian plastic to finely crafted beauties.Kornegay also urges gardeners to mulch, mulch, mulchto slow down evaporation.

Moss Landscaping’s Joey Canahuati advises assessingthe drainage of your entire lot to alleviate standingwater and washouts. Redirect heavy water flows to pro-tect your landscape and your home, as well as yourneighbors’. He also recommends upgrading to a smartirrigation system and keeping you system well-tuned.

Larger landscapes allow for a variety of garden elements, such as a lily pond, rock garden, paved areas, and formal rose beds. Photo courtesy of Moss Landscaping.

TREESLACEBARK ELM

Ulmas parvifoliaLacebark Elm is a deciduousshade tree with a rounded crownthat grows 40 to 50 feet high. Itis relatively fast growing, but isstill a strong tree, unlike Ashesand Tallows. Its fine foliage pro-vides a filtered shade allowing for good growing conditionsbeneath it, unlike many Oaks and Magnolias. The bark peels inlarge flakes in a mosaic pattern, exposing a cinnamon-coloredunderbark.

ALMOND VERBENA

Aloysia virgataAlmond Verbena is a semi-ever-green tree with an uprightgrowth habit to 15 feet. It pro-duces highly fragrant, delicateflowers from spring through fall, and even into winter if tempera-tures are mild. In addition tofilling the garden with their heavenly scent, the white flowerspikes attract butterflies. Its gray-green foliage has a fine textureand the tree thrives in full sun but can adapt to partial shade.

KUMQUAT

Fortunella spp.We haven’t found a citrus wedon’t like, because there isnothing about them not tolike. Citrus are small ever-green trees, usually 15 to 20feet tall, perfectly suited asscreen or shade trees in theurban garden. Intensely fra-grant flowers appear inspring and early summer andsporadically throughout theyear. They attract the GiantSwallowtail butterfly, providean excellent habitat for song-birds, and produce an abun-dance of mouth-wateringfruit loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. Unlike other fruittrees, citrus do not require a full day of sun. Kumquats are partic-ularly well suited for lazy gardeners as they are the hardiest of thecitrus, surviving temperatures in the teens. They are also smallerthan most citrus so are easily grown in containers. The fruit ofkumquats are small and prolific, which makes the tree highlyornamental as it remains on the tree months after ripening.

For a beautiful yard that will remain low maintenance and highly enjoyable, it’s best to choose plants that thrive here. Here is a collection of favorites.BY MIKE GIBSON AND SUSAN FISCHER

PINEAPPLE GUAVA

Feijoa sellowianaPineapple Guava is an evergreenshrub that I prefer to use as asmall, usually to 15 feet, multi-trunked or single trunk tree. It hasbeautiful blue-green foliage that issilvery underneath. Appearing inlate spring, the flowers are quiteexotic with fleshy white petals that are edible and prominentfuchsia stamens. The edible fruit is egg-shaped with waxy gray-green skin, a juicy greenish-white pulp and a tropical taste.

VITEX

Vitex agnes-castusVitex, like Crape Myrtle, is a largeshrub, 15 to 20 feet tall, that isusually grown as a multi-trunkedtree. Its aromatic foliage is grey-green with a lighter underside andresembles that of a Marijuanaplant. Thankfully, law enforcementagencies can tell the difference. The violet to dark purple, fra-grant flowers appear in cycles of striking displays from latespring to fall.

SHRUBSPRIDE OF BARBADOS

Caesalpinia pulcherimaPride of Barbados is a root hardy, subtropical, multi-stemmedshrub that grows 4 to 6 feet. During hot summer months it istopped with large panicles of bright orange and yellow that are8 to 10 inches tall and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. This Texas SuperStar shrub needs good drainage and full sun.

DWARF BOTTLEBRUSH

Callistemon citrinus 'Little John'This dense, mounding evergreenshrub has aromatic foliage thatprovides a unique blue-green colorto the garden. From summer tofall, tips of the stiff branches arecovered with flower terminals thathave long crimson colored stamensgiving them that "bottlebrush" look. It grows to a height of 3feet, which makes it ideal for the urban garden. It performs bestin full sun.

BUTTERFLY BUSH

The flowers are 3 inch, golden-yellow black-eyed daisies

that appear summer through fall, although mine blooms best inthe dead of winter when it receives better sun. If yours bloombest in the warm season, do not deadhead the flowers late in theseason as the persistent center cones add winter interest and theseeds provide a source of food for small birds. pet of the month

Hi, I’m Bootsie.Like Bootsy Collins, I’ve got more than my

fair share of funky goodness in my soul.

Ain’t no pussycat up in heeuh! My former

owners thought I acted more like a dog

because I am super friendly, cuddly and

amazing cool. Did I mention I’m also strik-

ingly handsome? I must be a Leo. So I guess

you’re wondering why I’m here at the SPCA. I blame the financial

meltdown. My peeps could no longer afford to lavish me with “cool

cat” food. But I won’t let my funky soul get the blues, so that’s why I’m

in this article today. Just trying to spread the word and hopefully tune

into your musical groove. We can jam whenever. I am just over a year

old and may have a slight case of asthma, but that can’t slow me down.

And speaking of funky stuff, I am already housetrained, so I’m cool to

head home with you today.
