This kitchen built 25 years ago needed help Itfelt cramped because of the door placed in the

center of the kitchen the fur downs over the cabi-nets and the layout of the cabinetry Using my 3-Ddesign program I shared several different plans forthe kitchen with the homeowners I helped themchoose all the finishes and then we completely gut-ted the kitchen About ten weeks later the kitchenwas transformed into this beautiful space

For this transformation we used granite for theperimeter of the kitchen travertine on the islandtumbled marble for the backsplash mosaic borderover the gas range apron front sink and oak hard-wood flooring

Subtle changes in form and function refresh and refine a tiny condo kitchen

A Splash of Style

Going to the hair salon is not the usual way to gain a client but hairdresser

Cathy Clark was having problems with her condo and needed my help

ldquoThe kitchen backsplash decision was getting on my nerves and just wasnrsquot

workingrdquo she explains ldquoI couldnrsquot figure out how to pull it all together The

backsplash had me really stumped and I could not figure out what color to

paint the wallsrdquo Cathy said

Since we had worked together before on her living and dining rooms

(Houston House amp Home April 2010 ldquo Finding Harmonyrdquo) Cathy knew

what to expect and felt confident with my recommendations We met at her

nearby condo and had a look Since her kitchen was small but wonderful it

just needed a few tweaks to make it spectacular With one meeting followed

by a few emails we transformed her condo kitchen ldquoYou made it so easyrdquo

she exclaimed ldquoThe more I had looked at tile the more confused I became

about what I wantedrdquo she explained

This agony went on for about six weeks

until Cathy contacted me for help ldquoWhat

a relief You shuffled through my stack of

59 tile samples selected just the right one

and we were on our wayrdquo Cathy said ldquoI

was very excited about it and was also

relieved to be rid of my indecisionrdquo

TIP Your eyes will first go to the lightest

and darkest items in a photograph

Using fruit and flowers to create contrast

with neutral paint and tile often gives you

the most bang for the buck and helps for

resale too

To expand the small room visually I rec-

ommended that she have her contractor

satin enamel This color coordinates beauti-

I also noticed the door of her fridge

opened the wrong way increasing her frus-

tration level because she had to walk around

the fridge to open the door

Gus switched the hinges mdash an easy fix

gathered we chose a backsplash tile from

TIP Cabinets donrsquot have to stand out

Sometimes painting them the same color

as the wall can make them ldquodisappearrdquo in

To increase the storage in the kitchen Gus installed chrome pull-out draw-

ers from Container Store inside the cabinets to the right of the washer dryer

ldquoThe pull-out shelves have lowered my frustration level and probably my

blood pressure toordquo she smiled

I gave Cathy the name of my great tile installer The professional installation

included wrapping the tile completely around the pass-through wall above the

sink as well as extending the tile beyond side of the washerdryer cabinet and

to form a backsplash on the existing desk ldquoThe tile looks fantastic and is so

easy to live with I really liked your idea of tiling up the wall and around the

pass-through and behind the desk Nothing was difficult and the project went

so quickly and smoothlyrdquo she explained She was confident it would turn out

after the success of her livingdining room project

ldquoMy family and friends say they love it even the ones who donrsquot mind

telling me if they donrsquot like somethingrdquo Cathy said ldquoI definitely recommend

professional design help I would probably still be wondering what backsplash

ldquoWhen I have the opportunityto look over photos a client haspulled out of design magazines Ifind there is usually a commontheme or stylerdquo says ChandraStone ldquoThey will tend to selectsimilar objects or finishes Oneclient did this and made a visionboard of sorts and then gave mecopies of those collages so that Icould refer to them while planningher kitchen So many aspects ofinterior design are visual so get itout of your head and collect pic-tures and samples of things thatmake you happyrdquo

ldquoIts a great combination to mix masculine andfeminine pieces to complete the look of thehomerdquo says Jawda ldquoIt will add depth to thespace so working together with both sexes isalways greatrdquo

ldquoI thrive on colorrdquo says Stone ldquoExperiment by usingsmall amounts of color that will pop For instance go toa retail store and pick up pillows of different colors andsee what happens when you put them on the neutralsofardquo

Harmony is important as well ldquoI like color palettesto flow smoothly through a home so it is unified but itis good to break that up with items that stand out It isoften wise for resale to stick to neutral finishes but theaccessories can be in bold colorsrdquo

The low-profile of Wes and Aimee Yuanrsquos one-story home in Bellairefeatures a gated carport combined with a garage to provide a wel-coming breezeway along with secure storage Angled transom wid-ows were added to the original design to allow views of the majesticoak tree from the kitchen and living area ldquoIt lets in a lot of naturallight and gives a nice connection to naturerdquo says Aimee

After more than a year of searching Wes andAimee Yuan bought a small older home on a quiet cul-de-sac in inner-loop Bellaire

The existing house was occupied by rental tenantswhich enabled the Yuans some time to choose anarchitect and draw up plans for the house that theywould later live in Wes and Aimee had initially hopedto purchase a home that could be renovated andupdated but never found a viable property that bothfit the Mid Century styling they desired and could beadapted to todayrsquos energy efficiency standards

In January 2009 shortly after they purchased theproperty The Yuans approached StudioMETArchitects to discuss the design of their home Thearchitectural firm known for modern styling andthoughtful design grew out of the Houston-basedhomebuilder Metropolitan Design Group Inc(MDGI) The successful builder spun off

A vacation with family to Palm Springs CA a few years backresulted in the couplersquos fascination with the look of the many

ldquoWe gave StudioMET a list of 25 things that included not just features but also

story home and the couple asked for a cohesive kitchenlivingdin-ing space to facilitate gatherings with family and friends They alsowanted exposed beams in the main room similar to the beamsthey had seen in those stunning Palm Springs homes The couplerequested at least three bedrooms for their home and expressedinterest in the idea of a carport but Aimee and Wes were certainthey wanted an enclosed garage for secure storage

Architect Stephen Andrews took the list of desired features and

qualities of the home and initially focused on the priorities andmajor elements such as the one-story plan and combinationkitchendiningliving area

ldquoThey gave us a realistic and achievable list of ingredientsrdquo saysAndrews ldquoThis was a huge help to get the design process off to agood startrdquo He admits some clients arenrsquot as organized and donrsquothave any details to help get the design going while other clientshave such a wildly varied wish list that their expectations are unre-alistic

DREAM COME TRUE

ldquoThey nailed the designrdquo raves Wes remarking that Andrewsrsquofirst presentation of the plans for their home was right on targetldquoThey really got itrdquo he says

ldquoA great thing about the design is the shape of our homerdquosays Wes ldquoThe shape is deep drawing you back rather thanshallow and wide making you feel boxed inrdquo

ldquoWhen we were in Palm Springs we really enjoyed that youcould walk outside and still feel it was part of the house wewanted that indoor-outdoor flowrdquo says Aimee ldquoWe really lovethe wall of sliding doors along the living area to be able enjoy ouroutdoor spacerdquo

FORM amp FUNCTION

The Yuans design preferences also helped StudioMET developan energy- and space-efficient home ldquoMid Century Modernactually lends itself very well to our climate conditions mdash morethan a white stucco boxrdquo says Andrews ldquoThe low-profile roof isone thing that really helps this house be efficient and the carportallows breezes to come through the whole outdoor spacerdquo

White Carrara marble has long been a favorite of Wesleyrsquos ldquoPeople frequently ask if wersquore concerned about stainingrdquo says Aimee Yuan ldquoI usually reply lsquowell theyrsquove use it in Italy forever so it should be finerdquordquo Themarble may take on a patina but it can be maintained with minimal effort

ldquoA great thing about the design is the shape of our home The shape is deep

A TPO roofing material (short for thermoplastic polyolefin) wasselected for the gently sloping roof This energy efficient roofing sys-tems helps moderate electricity bills ldquoWe kept getting the bills thatfirst summer and wondered if they were prorating us or somethingbecause they were so low only around $100 and never over $200rdquo

The front of the home faces south so the majority of windowsand glass doors face east to take in moderate morning light while

more of the solid walls face the westrsquos more intense rays In spiteof the homersquos being located quite near a railroad line the Yuansfind the noise is not distracting or overwhelming The railwayand its required right-of-way actually provide a wind channel forbreezes to flow freely

The couple says they appreciated the relationship betweenMGDI and StudioMET because of the architectsrsquo experiencewith construction They felt it yielded a practical doable designrather than an unrealistic budget-busting design

The Yuans neighbors have praised the project as well especial-ly their choice to build a one-story house As the framing went upand the structure took shape the neighbors began commenting

The deck area was originally envisioned as concrete flatwork (a series of staggered slabs)but the final choice was to go with a deck ldquoWe actually really love the deck It gives a goodtransition to the lawn rather than the flatworkrdquo says Wes The result yields a view that startswith the smooth walnut floors inside goes to the rougher texture of the ipe decking and thenonto the green lawn
