Step into a home built by ClarkArnold and you find yourself in abeautiful expansive living space, built to last a lifetime.

It encompasses the livingroom, dining room, kitchen, andoutdoor living area. It is a seam-less flow from room to room, and the natural light that floodsinto the many custom doors andwindows give the home a com-fortable yet classic feel.

Arnold, owner of ArnoldBuilding Services based in theHouston Heights, is a third gen-eration home builder.

His two granfathers have builtand remodeled Houston areahomes for decades.

“My grandfather, BoydArnold, insisted I spend timeworking with every tradeinvolved in the homebuildingprocess.

I worked with demo crews, painters, framers, electricians, plumbers, sheet rockers, and fin-ish carpenters. It was real onsitetraining.”

In 2006, after being groomedby two of his home town’s mostprominent builders, he was ready

to build a name for himself inHouston.

Today, Arnold BuildingServices is one of Houston’smost recognized custom renova-tion and new constructionbuilders. In Houston’s boomingeconomy, 65percent of his busi-ness involves custom renovationsand new construction accountsfor 35 percent.

“I listen to the details of myhomeowners’ lifestyles and createa home to fit, rather than squeez-ing their lifestyle into a house,”he says.

Arnold Building Services builds custom homes, provides complete remodeling services and constructs room additions. Based in the historic Houston Heights, the company works in various areas of Houston, Memorial Villages, Heights, Spring Valley, West University and the surrounding metro area.

Arnold Building Services also provides interior design services to clients needing assistance.V-groove ceiling and range hood in kitchen.

For instance, the emphasis ona recent new home he built inthe Woodland Heights concen-trated on family living and enter-tainment on the first floor.

“We designed the first floor toprovide the setting for the every-day lifestyle, the formal dinnerparty, cocktail party, game dayparty or two year old birthdayparty.”

The pivotal design elements inthe spacious kitchen are theexpansive use of gray-veinedwhite marble, Calacatta Altissimo.

The natural stone was selectedto cover the large island andcountertops. However to com-pound the look, Arnold used thisunique stone on the kitchenbacksplash, adjacent wet bar(with built-in refrigerator draw-ers, ice maker, wine cooler andunder-the-stairs wine storage)and all bathrooms throughoutthe home.

Neal Nichols, head of opera-tions for Arnold Builders, notesthat all the electrical outlets forthe hand appliances weredesigned to be cleverly hiddenunder the cabinets.

They are easily accessible butdon’t interrupt the ambience andlook of the continuous marblebacksplash.

The cladded ceiling in thekitchen is another design elementnot to be ignored. Arnolddesigned it by using 1x6 V-groove pine and laying it into asquare geometric pattern, thenadding a pale aqua wash.

MR-16 recessed cans havebeen blended in, along withbuilt-in speakers that are tied intothe NuVO whole home audiosystem.

Large sliding windows overthe sink and work areas allow forpass-throughs to the coveredpatio, outdoor grill and entertain-ing space. Centered on the ceil-ing is a mid-century LouisPoulsen light fixture, re-purposedand then dipped in copper. It isa focal point helping tie in thecopper-colored accessories nes-tled in built-in display nooks intothe other-wise monochromespace of pearl gray walls.

The 48-inch WolfCommercial slide in range, Wolf30-inch double ovens, and 48-

inch Sub-Zero refrigerator arestainless, but mix nicely with thecopper accents. Two Bosch dish-washers, paneled to match thecustom cabinetry, are fixed ineach side of the large, singlebowl farmhouse sink. The hand-crafted hood vent over the six-burner cooktop mimics the ceil-ing motif with the V-groove pinewood as does the fireplace in theliving room.

The custom cabinetry, builton-site from 3/4 domestic ply-wood, features 120-degree BlumEuropean hinges and BlumEuropean under-mount softclose drawer slides. Pan and spiceracks are placed on each side ofthe stove for storage and conven-ience. To optimize storage spaceand keep contents organized,Arnold designed a large chef’spantry with adjustable shelving, pull out drawers, and shallowdoor shelves.

The kitchen flows to the liv-ing room lined with customFrench doors that open theentire downstairs to the court-yard.

Thick white beams covering

the living and dining rooms adddimension and character tobright open spaces. The mason-ry wood burning fireplace, sur-rounded by Sea Grass naturalstone and crowned with a cus-tom wood mantel, providewarmth to the rooms.

Every detail of this Heightshome has been meticulouslyplanned and executed to perfec-tion by Arnold, Nichols andtheir team of craftsmen.

“We are very proud of ourteam and will continue providingHouston homeowners with cus-tom homes for years to come,”says Arnold.

Arnold says homeownerschoose to live in the HoustonHeights not only for its stablehousing market but for the manyparks, restaurants, schools, bikepaths, art galleries, abundantshade trees and historic homes.

“Our goal is to build and ren-ovate homes while maintainingthe architectural integrity of thehouse and neighborhood. Atthe same time we modernize thehome for today’s needs andlifestyle.”

Nancy Harper contacted

me because she did not like

her bath and felt that it was

very small and dated. A

member of my exercise

class, she had met me years

before this remodel.

“You had helped me on

two other projects so I was

very confident in your taste

and suggestions, and I knew

we could work together

without any problems,

Nancy says.

My first thought was to

expand the space and install

new windows. Nancy want-

ed the room to be open, and bigger and fresher looking.

“I was really sure about how I wanted the room to look,

but you sent me a picture of a blue and white cottage style

bath you had seen in a magazine. That was it—exactly the

look I wanted. You also helped me think of all the questions

to ask the builder who was actually doing the remodel so I

could get the look I desired.”

As a follow-up, I sent Nancy

a list outlining her areas of

concern and the names of pro-

fessionals who could do the

work. While she chose other

work professionals, it ended up

being a good experience. She

liked them, and they did a

great job.

Nancy and Morris chose

Keith Cohrs, owner of

Brookfield Custom Homes, as

the builder/remodeler, and

designer Phil Grose to draw

up the plans.

While Keith is still a

builder, Phil is now pastor

of Caring Ministries of First

United Methodist Church

in Sugar Land.

“I was very pleased with all of your suggestions. It was not

scary at all because I knew you would figure out exactly what I

wanted even though I am not good at describing it. If I see

something I like, I am very firm with it. The problem for me

is getting to that point, and you always get me there.

“You were also available by email for any concerns or ques-

tions I might have had, and your emailed homework assign-

ments were great since I am very visual. They gave me a jump-

ing off place – to contemplate what I really wanted the space

to be; another one of your great suggestions,” Nancy explains.

“Thinking about that allowed me to get the master bath

that really works for us. Friends and family love the space.

They all said it looks updated but still looks like us. My hus-

band likes it, and that makes it the best for me,” Nancy says.

Feeling chilly andwanting to visuallywarm up yourhome?

Two industry profession-als offer quick tips that willperk your spirits and makeyour nest a cozy retreatfrom the cold temps out-side.

For starters, that well-worn sofa that used to beinviting may be looking alittle sad.

Find a few snazzy throwpillows – and go bold bymixing colors, textures andpatterns – to give it arefreshed look, accordingto Karin Sun, co-founderof Crane & Canopy.

“Comfort is key, so pullout throws, quilts andblankets,” adds Sun. Tossthem on the arm of a sofa, chair or ottoman. Or foldthem up and stack togeth-er in a large textural basketfor easy access. They areready to go when wantingto snuggle up with a bookand hot drink.

Army blankets and vin-tage quilts can be a whim-sical and interesting way toaccessorize a space, accord-ing to James Wheeler, owner of JWheeler Designsin Atlanta.

When buying wintertimecomforters, pillows orthrows, Wheeler suggestslooking for heartier materi-als, such as wools or heavycottons – or tweed to add

texture and warmth. Along that same note,

“think about changingout your more summery, thin curtains with onesthat are more substantiallooking,” adds Sun.Remember “patterneddrapes – or blinds – addvibrancy to the room.”

Heavier draperies alsowill help insulate win-dows, keeping the chillyair at bay, according toWheeler.

Wheeler likes to look tonature for inspiration ondecorating homes.During this time of theyear, he looks for beauti-ful earthy neutral tones touse for bedding ordraperies.

“Place rugs on uncar-peted surfaces,” he adds.“This will protect yourfeet from the chill ofhardwoods and tile floors. If you have natural fiberrugs in your home duringthe summer, layer addi-tional carpets on top ofthem.”

“If your budget allows, reupholster a chair or sofain a rich velvet as anoption for additionalcomfort and a way to‘glam up’ the space,” saysWheeler.

Kitchens are where we come together and baths are where wego to be apart.

One is the social center for friends and family; the other apersonal spa for relaxation and reflection.

The clean lines of contemporary design, the color grey, energy efficiency, more storage capacity and LED lighting areprevailing kitchen trends, according to a National Associationof Kitchen and Baths’ survey of builders, designers, architectsand other trade members.

Bathrooms are the new home sanctuary awash with soakingtubs, wet rooms, walk-in showers, steam options, and sooth-ing tunes via Bluetooth and wireless speakers. New features

are toilets that flush with a wave of the hand and others thatbecome soft LED nightlights after dark.

“Whether building a new home or updating a current one,Houstonians are most likely to select upscale, built-in appli-ances for sleek, open kitchens that resemble the functional lay-out favored by professional chefs,” says Julie Wood withGeneral Electric, which keeps close tabs on the robust market.

Popular updates include induction cook tops, combinationovens and high tech refrigeration with on-the-door featuressuch as chipped ice, filtered water and hot water for tea or oat-meal.

Shades of gray are an appealing backdrop for kitchens andbaths. It is the contemporary alternative to white and coordi-nates with natural countertop materials such as marble, quartz, granite, or new hard surfaces like Dekton.

Gray looks great with a backsplash made of strip glass, stoneor subway tiles. Embracing the trend, Kitchen Maid has newcabinetry in designer colors like Pebble Grey, Cinder Glaze orthe bolder Greyloft.

More plugged in then ever before, most kitchens areequipped with convenient docking and charging stations, andfor pet owners there are new accommodations such as feedingstations, litter box cabinets and dog faucets.

A few of the “wow” products available for kitchens andbaths include:

The Monogram® French door wall oven (left) has a con-vection direct air system for even cooking. Oven functionsmay be controlled remotely with a smart phone, and it hasinterior LED lighting. French doors ease food removal. Ovencapacity is five cubic feet. It has a stainless steel finish. $4,699.By General Electric.

Induction cook tops (left). Already popular in Europe, theinduction cook top is truly a new way of cooking. Cook topshold a series of burners called induction coils that generatemagnetic fields and warm steel-based pans. The cooking ves-sels actually cook the food, not the stove elements, so the topsare only slightly warm. Goodby minor kitchen burns.Temperature, speed, control, and even cooking are additionalbenefits. The stove has a flat, easy-to-clean surface and heatsup faster than an electric range allowing for faster cookingtimes — water boils in half the time. Energy savings can besubstantial. Available from most appliance manufacturersincluding General Electric, Wolf, Bosch, Whirlpool,KitchenAid, and others. You do need iron cookware, such as

1980s Kitchen Opens Up

TO GREET GUESTS AND 21ST CENTURYBY SUSAN FOX • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANTHONY RATHBUN

The owners readily admit that before architect CharlesTodd Helton came on the scene, no one wanted tohang out in their kitchen. And if guests did wonder

in, they were herded to another, more friendly room.“It was strange with a choppy layout and these narrow

walkways,” says Helton, noting it was a descent kitchen in ofitself, offering plenty of functional countertops. But, it wasdated and closed off.

“Eighty-five percent of the house, which sits on a golfcourse in The Woodlands in a beautiful neighborhood, wasrenovated,” says Helton. “We left a couple of stud walls in thekitchen, but it was a complete redo.”

Georgianna and Raj Sayel do not recall how they cameacross Helton, but they are glad they did. “He came throughfor us with a great design,” she says.

“We’ve lived in the house since 1995. And when we bought

Editor’s Note: The Sayel kitchen was selected for its style and use of space. Not only does the kitchen better suit the scale of the overall house, it is now an inviting room. Removing walls and fur-downs can do much to open up small, cramped spaces.

it, we really couldn’t imagine that we wouldoutgrow it. But after raising two boys here,we realized that the layout just didn’t workfor us anymore,” explains Georgianna Sayel.

“After looking for a new home for a cou-ple of years, we decided that we were notgoing to find another lot like ours. My hus-band is an Ob/Gyn and the proximity to thehospital is really important. So we decided toremodel,” she says.

Helton advised the couple to get rid of thegooseneck in the kitchen, where it felt mostcramped. He also drew out plans that elimi-nated the old peninsula and situated a largeisland with a sink and prep area in the mid-dle of the squared-off space.

The original kitchen was mostly closed to the living room. The couple wanted the house to convey easier flow.

“We used the same brick that we applied on the exterior to the kitchen backsplash,” says Georgianna Sayel.

One of Helton’s favorite things about thespace now is the butler’s pantry, accessiblefrom the breakfast room that leads to themaster bedroom. It gives the master semi-private access to coffee and other amenities.

“We wanted a bit of everything in thekitchen – especially the built-in Miele coffeemaker!” says Sayel.

There is a large two-section pantry. Adoor leads from the garage into one area ofit, allowing groceries to be dropped offwithout littering the main countertops.

As part of the design goal for the kitchen,Helton visually expanded the new kitchenby opening it up to the living room.

The owners originally wanted to use brick on the floor but decided that it might not be practical. Instead, they opted for slate. The countertops are honed black granite.

The old kitchen had a choppy floorplan and a narrow passageway into the storage area.

While Helton created the buildingplans, Susan Dabbar, a kitchen designer, helped with placement details. Shemade suggestions regarding cabinetryand fixtures, along with other majordesign elements.

In the middle of the project,Dabbar’s husband was transferred outof the country. She then hired BellacasaDesign to complete the job. “The kitchen is where everyone congre-gates, and now it’s perfect. We don’teven try to move friends out of thekitchen anymore. It’s where everyonewants to be,” says Sayel, who oversawthe work in the kitchen.

The kitchen cabinets were custom made. The green on the kitchen walls is Benjamin Moore’s 228. The trim is Benjamin Moore 512.

The breakfast table and chairs are from Freemarc, located at the Houston Design Center.

Good Things Can Happen

Without Spending a Fortune

A DESIGNER SHOWS WHAT CAN BE DONE ON $35K!BY SUSAN FOX • PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREGORY THOMAS

If you’ve never owned a standard “builder’s bathroom”that resembled Boyd and Renee Lovelace’s original, thenchances are you’ve at least seen one.

A garden tub with a surround of beige tile typically hogs thespace, and a shiny-gold framed shower is crammed into thecorner. The flooring is usually tile, and the cabinetry, moreoften than not, is painted white. The vanity often features twocultured marble sinks, and one large mirror is centered above– just as it was in the Lovelaces’ Woodlands home.

While the bathroom described is functional, the Lovelacesone day decided that theirs sorely lacked personality.

Tired of ho-hum, the Lovelaces contacted interior designerPamela O’Brien, principal of Pamela Hope Designs.

Renee Lovelace – before she took Boyd’s last name – hadbeen a client of O’Brien’s, when she first began her business. And soon after, as a coincidence, Boyd Lovelace attended aFeng Shui class conducted by O’Brien. Then he hired her tohelp him with the décor – at his then-new Woodlands crafts-

man-style house. Lo-and-behold, Renee and Boyd later met and married.

They both agreed Pamela O’Brien was the person to helpthem achieve what they wanted for their bathroom, whichneeded to better serve the newly wed couple.

“We had one directive for Pamela, and that was to give us aspa-like bathroom,” says Renee Lovelace.

O’Brien’s team joined forces with Travis Martin and JimGodre at Remodeling Specialists to upgrade the Lovelaces’bathroom by incorporating everything on the couple’s wishlist.

Lovelace’s top request was that they wanted a wine refriger-ator and coffee station. She explained to O’Brien that whentheir children and grandchildren come to visit, she wanted theoption to retreat from “public” spaces in the house.

She and her husband now can have morning coffee togetherwithout disturbing any guests. Additionally, they can relax atthe end of an entertaining day and also quietly enjoy a glass ofwine, if they choose, before retiring.

“They now have a large two-person open shower, his andher basins and a dedicated vanity area for Renee. Medicinecabinets, ample under-cabinet storage and an appliance garage

Initially, the couple wanted to adjust the shower windows to be the same dimension, but the task of doing that would have exceeded their budget.

help corral products and hair appliances,” says O’Brien. Knowing the couple preferred a traditional but casual look, O’Brien

selected vintage style plumbing and lighting fixtures, porcelain wood plankflooring and natural stone tile mosaics.

Cool gray hues update the space while warmer neutrals blend with therest of the home’s décor.

The couple says they initially and mentally were thinking the projectmight cost $25,000. Then they made their selections, which almost dou-bled the price. By re-examining what they needed, wanted and had tohave, the Lovelaces got their costs to a very doable $35,000.

The sit-down vanity on the left is for Renee Lovelace, and the frameless mirrors on the right are also medicine cabinets. The shower wall is a soft striated porcelain with slate.

The bathroom was cramped with both a big garden tub and shower.

LOCAL PROS SHARE ADVICETIPS FROM A PLUMBER“Often times we get called out to a customer’s home becausethe toilet runs incessantly,” says Ronnie Goyne, owner ofTexas Master Plumber.

As a prevention measure, “be careful when installing theflapper on a leaking commode. Make sure the chain is nottwisted that later binds up to the handle – once flushingoccurs. Something so simple can prevent thousands of gallonsof water from being wasted, saving the homeowners a bundleover the course of a year.”

Of course, the better option is to install a flapperless toiletthat does not cause the water leaks and maintenance problemsoften associated with its counterparts. The Kohler Kelston

model toilet is one such flapperless example. – In regard to another area . . . DIY enthusiasts often

choose to replace the wax seal beneath their commode. Goyneadvises that when “pulling the commode from where it sits, toreplace the wax ring, you should make sure the flange – whatthe toilet bolts to – is laying on top of the finished floor andnot flush with or below it. It is vitally important that the com-mode makes a good seal with the wax ring. Such an assuranceprevents future leaks.

– Can your water be hazardous to bathroom fixtures? Yes,that is possible, says Goyne. “Homeowners may want to thinkabout investing in a water softener system to minimize the cal-cium build-up on their fixtures in order to extend their life.

Silestone Bianco solid surface countertops are non-porous, which keeps food prep safe. Flapperless toilets help to prevent water leaks. (Photo courtesy of Kohler)

“If you are wiping away ‘white stuff” when cleaning theshower, know that is calcium. And over time, the calciumbuilds up and can cause seals to leak, and parts and fixtures tocorrode. Goyne recommends Pelican Water Softening Systemsthat not only protect fixtures but also cleans the water – thesame water people bath in and drink.

REVITALIZING CABINETS“Nearly 80 percent of our business these days is cabinetryglazing,” says Patty Hoffman, owner of Patty Hoffman WallDesigns. “Many of our clients have wood grained cabinets –typically made of Oak or Ash – that have turned "orange"over time.

To give them new life, “we glaze them with an “inking”technique that tones down the orange. The dark brown orblack glaze settles in the groves and crevices to accentuate thedetail of the trim. This same technique can be applied towhite, cream or any color-painted cabinets.

“An incredible new material that has just come out iscalled “Jewelry Texture.” This material is applied through astencil and applied to walls or to cabinetry doors. It has lots ofglitter, glass beads and mica to sparkle and shine while addinga raised texture to the design.”

WHAT’S COOKING IN THE KITCHEN“Having been in the kitchen business for many years, we haveseen trends come and go,” says Nicki Kana at CabinetInnovations.

“Today, we find that everyone seems to want a sleek andclean design – in both contemporary and traditional house-holds. We have moved away from heavy molded cabinet doorsaccompanied by intricate woodcarvings to a more tailoredlook. ? “Granite was once all the rage, now it is quartz – from theman-made varieties to the natural quartzite. It allows you toget the light colors of marble but with the durability everyonedesires with granite.”? “Cabinet hardware has always been called the jewelry ofyour kitchen. Our favorite is the ‘new brass.’ This is not theshiny brass your grandmother had but one that offers a morematted, brushed finish.”? “Most people are stepping ‘outside the box’ when it comesto design. Don’t be afraid to use navy as an accent color inyour cabinetry or put a chandelier in a high-gloss whitekitchen.”

THE MOST IMPORTANT ROOMS As for as adding value to your home, focus on the kitchen andmaster bath. They are the most important rooms in the housewhen it comes to a return on investment and a higher qualityof life, according to interior designer Lynne T. Jones.• “Clean lines, less ornamentation, quality appliances, organ-ized cabinets with ‘easy on the back’ pull outs are a great startwhen designing or remodeling a kitchen.”• Natural stone counter tops remain popular. “But we are see-ing more requests for composite products, such as CaesarStone and Silestone. Both products are durable and actuallymore sanitary than marble and granite.• In the master bath . . . “My clients simply do not want abathtub. Instead, they want a large walk-in shower. As a result,we are making the shower a true ‘focal point.’ If a tub isselected, then it is a beautiful free-standing one – and treated“like a piece of art.”• “For anyone wanting to renovate or build new, it is impor-tant to establish the design style. This decision will set thedirection for fixtures, lighting, cabinet doors, hardware, floor-ing, tile work and so on. If unsure of your style, clip maga-zines or go online. Note or clip the rooms that you are drawnto. Pretty soon, you will begin to see a pattern of what youlike and prefer.”

Info: www.lynnetjones.com

SMART DESIGN STEPS“If you are building a new home, it’s always a good idea tohave the kitchen layout fully planned before breakingground,” says Maggie Grants, a local kitchen designer.

Moving plumbing, ventilation or windows after the fact, when the house is well under way, can be costly and result incompletion delays. Do it early enough so all changes arenoted on the plans.

The kitchen’s role has evolvedover the last 20 years.

Rather than a separate room to beclosed off while entertaining, the kitchenis now the heart of the home.

Often opened to an adjoining denarea, this room has transitioned into thespace where family and friends gatherand spend time talking to the cook. Thisopen-space-living trend makes it all themore important to bring a furnished feelinto the kitchen.

Maintaining the same wall treatmentin these areas allows the spaces to beseen as one. Forming a cohesive, cleanelement is so much in vogue in today’sinteriors.

Plasters instantly enhance the “bones”of the house, bringing such patina to thewalls that the furniture, draperies, art andaccessories evoke the feel of a collectionassembed over time.

Specialty cabinet finishes – rather thancabinets sprayed one color – imply thatbuilt-ins were found and installed, imparting character and warmth to themost-used room in the home.

IN THE BATHROOMSWith little fabric or furnishings, bathsgarner their special individuality fromelements like counters, flooring, plumb-ing fixtures, hardware, lighting and fin-ishes on cabinetry and walls.

From sleek and glamorous toEuropean, traditional, or over-the-topelegance, wall and cabinet treatmentslend artistic finishing touches that marryall the design details together, transform-ing powder rooms into little jewels andmaster baths into spa retreats.

Perfect places to stencil, or hand-paintsophisticated trees, florals and birds, acustom wallpaper feel can be createdwithout the worry of the paper peelingup or mold growing beneath the surface. Many plasters can read like porcelain orbe waxed with metallic powders to lend abit of shimmer, resonate of a silk fabric.

Leslie owns Segreto Finishes, a decorative painting and plastering company, and Segreto Art Gallery & Boutique, 1414 Antoine. She writes the weeklyblog, “Segreto Secrets,” and has published the book, “Segreto: Secrets to Finishing Beautiful Interiors” and more recently, “Segreto Style.” Both are avail-able via Amazon (www.amazon.com) and at her store. What advice can you share on how to sellhomes quickly? I work extensively with myclients to make sure their home is ready forshowings and provide an in depth market analy-sis to ensure that the house is priced appropriately. Taking time before youput your home on the market can make a big difference to your bottom line.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to put theirhome on the market? Call me!

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets topdollar? I provide an extensive marketing campaign for all my listings that isin writing. Additionally, I manage the process from beginning to closing toensure that we get the most money we can for a property AND we get toclosing. In the current market, a buyer can offer you a high sales price, but itmeans nothing if they can’t get to the closing table. I work very closely withmy clients, the other agent, the title company and all other parties to thetransaction to ensure we are hitting the milestones we should to get theproperty closed.

Where are the hottest markets in the Houston area? All of the close-inneighborhoods in Houston have always been desirable neighborhoods, butwe are seeing them take off like we haven’t in the past. The low inventorylevels are causing prices to continue to rise. Buyers should be prepared formultiple offers in many instances.

For a simpler "Zen" look, try Agave. There are at least a dozen species andhybrids that are 100 percent evergreen. They range from tabletop 8-inch sized allthe way up to 6-foot monsters. This Agave Americana 'Opal' is a zero-care ever-green making a 2x2-foot dramatic mound of grey-green and yellow.

LEFT: For those with lots of room, this Cassia splendida doesn't falter ina frost. Making an 8x8-foot mound, she sports golden bloom clustersfrom Halloween to Christmas. Of course it can be pruned to suit yourneeds or trained into a small tree. Also, the Cassia is the host plant forthe Sulphur butterfly.

The languid grass-like foliage of thisCarex 'Goldstrike'hangs down overthe sides of thisstone planter. Thecenter plant isAspidistra 'Ginga'with her darkstrap-like leavesspotted in yellow. Both are ever-green here in theGulf Coast andreally show off intotal shade.

The Carex'Sparkler'Sedge is arugged varie-gated ever-green forshade makesa bushy18x18-inchmound in anysoil and isquite droughttolerant.

Joshua Kornegay, owner of Joshua’sNative Plants, compiled a pictorial list ofhis favorite plants that have proven hardy

enough to survive any wintry blast.“Of course, we have all heard of Camellia,

Juniper and Cyclamen as evergreens for thegarden,” he says. But, for those who wantsomething different, try these winter-proofgoodies:
