I was disappointed but not surprised recently to learn that Hallmark Cards Inc. will soon close its production plant in Topeka, Kansas, eliminating 300 jobs. The household brand name that many of us
consider to be synonymous with birthday and greeting cards is cut-ting production in a time when consumers seem to prefer the ease of social media over the expense and time associated with paper-based communications.
A reporter with The Kansas City Sun commented on the plant clos-ing as follows:
“Whew! Are people today lacking in such commitment and sincerity compared with our parents and grandparents, or what? More than the people at Hallmark are the losers in this. We all suffer from the loss of that old paper connection.”
Speaking of connections, the Hallmark situation had me thinking about the people in my life who continue to utilize paper communica-tions. I thought of my friend’s grandmother who routinely wrote and mailed letters to me until her death earlier this year. I must admit that I got excited every time I saw her handwriting on an envelope in the mailbox. Further, Mamaw’s heartfelt, handwritten messages endeared me to her more than any digital communications from any other per-son ever has.
The Hallmark situation had me thinking back on my own recent birthdays when I have received increasingly fewer cards in the mail-box each year. My mother, sisters and a select few friends can be re-lied on to go to the trouble of buying and mailing a birthday card, but, then again, these are the people who care enough to make a gesture that seems grander and more signifi cant with each passing year. At the same time, in recent years more people than ever have reached out to me with birthday wishes via social media. Perhaps Diuguid is right in connecting greeting cards with commitment and sincerity.
By now we all recognize that times are indeed changing for print products and perhaps especially those which depend upon mail ser-vices. Fortunately, interest remains strong for local and regional maga-zines despite their “dual curse” of dependency on print and mail. For some of us, there’s just something more authentic to holding a piece of printed matter in our hands in lieu of staring at a computer screen. (If you agree, please simply remember to recycle).
I hope you’ll enjoy this issue featuring our Design Awards 2012 Top Design project. Congratulations to Debra & Rod Miller of R & D Design for another job well done!
Sending a greeting card is a sincere investment in commitment. A person has to go to a store, pick out the most appropriate card, pay for it, go home, write something nice inside the card, get the address and put it with the name of the person on the envelope, add a stamp and then take the thing to the post offi ce.
–Lewis Diuguid

10 HOUSE AND HOME ISSUE NO. 8 - 2012
What are some common or costly mistakes people make when remodeling a bathroom and how can I avoid them?
Bath projects can be extra costly when you don’t plan correctly. My advice is to get estimates
from several contractors and to look beyond the factor of price alone. Also, try to get to know your contractor in the short 30-60 minute consultation that most offer. Use com-mon sense and understand that a qualifi ed contractor will have appropriate answers to your many questions. As for me, I enjoy
it when a customer asks technical ques-tions because I usually have the answers to make the customer more comfortable. Also, pay attention to how much education and experience the contractor can offer. A good contractor should go over his plan and point out relevant details that would apply if he were to get hired for the job.
Design is equally important to installation. Bathroom designers who are looking to
create a true master retreat should consider how the space could be utilized to meet the client’s needs. As a client, consider the priorities for your new bath and work with your designer to make sure there is enough square footage to accommodate your goals. Sometimes when planning a bathroom, it’s important to prioritize functionality over esthetics—and vice versa—to accomplish a vision. ■

10 REASONSWhy They DeserveYour Business
Danny Soileau, PresidentThat’s Entertainment, Inc. www.thatsentertainmentla.com (337) 857-1430Melissa Oivanki
1 What we do We offer solutions. We help you decide
what kind technologies work best for
your lifestyle. We also simplify the use
of multiple remote controls to just one
or we program your phone or iPad
to control your electronics. We work
with your interior designer, builder or
contractor to make sure the TV, speakers
and other components are installed and
set up properly. In essence, we simplify
your lifestyle so you can enjoy your
favorite music or TV programs with
simplicity.
2 The extras we can offerWe provide upgrades to your existing
WiFi network so you can stream
music and movies without the hiccups
associated with bandwidth on your
home network.
3 One thing you might not know I want our potential clients to know that
we care about what we do. Honesty and
integrity go a long way.
4 It might surprise you I think our clients are surprised to learn
all of the things we can do for them.
Also, I think they are pleasantly surprised
to see how easy it is to work with us.
5 On trends and local concerns Outdoor living spaces are a really big
deal right now. We help you incorporate
the same experience you have in the
living room to the patio. I think being
able to watch the ball game outside
while grilling with friends is way
too much fun! Also, controlling your
components with your phone or tablet
is also very popular. We have several
solutions that accomplish that kind of
control.
6 About the business, in one wordCool. All the advancements in digital
technology make my business a constant
learning experience.
7 Defining good customer serviceI listen, listen, listen to what you have to
say and then I act on what I have heard. I
always make sure I am clear on what my
clients are asking of me. When I see that
perfect smile on my client’s face, I know I
have done a good job.
8 On dollars and “sense” It goes back to listening to what the
client wants and expects. I will design
the system you want; not what I want. I
take very seriously the idea of value for
money spent. I offer products that are
the best value for the investment.
9 Why we’re different It’s about how you feel when you do
business with someone. It’s about trust.
I don’t sell widgets. I provide solutions
with experience, trust, honesty and
integrity.
10 My idea of a great day at work My ideal day in business is when I
accomplish everything I have on the
schedule for that day. After a full day
at work, when I can honestly smile and
relax, I know it’s been a good day. n
In business since 1985, Danny Soileau has seen
a lot of changes in technology. He believes
experience is what makes That’s Entertainment the obvious choice in audio-
visual consulting and installation.

Design Awards 2012Part III of III
Near and dear to the designer’s heart is a Santa Maria home that was remodeled and furnished for some dear, lifelong friends. A few short weeks after the homeown-ers moved back into the newly remodeled house, lighten-ing struck an attic gas line, causing a devastating fire. The family escaped with their lives and little else, but sustained by their faith and an inspiring attitude, they decided to rebuild.
Taking advantage of the opportunity for the home to more closely reflect this family’s taste, Rod Miller
re-imagined the floor plan, architectural details and exterior of the home. He served as design consultant for the archi-tectural concept plans, construction and interior decorating, with construction by Phillip Troutman. The overall feel of the house is elegant metropolitan with a touch of glamour. Clean lines and a pale, luminescent palette are accented with lots of sparkle. Now better than before, the home was furnished and move-in ready just a few days before the one-year anniversary of the fire.

In the months leading up to House & Home’s fifth annual Design Awards competition, interior designers and decorators, architects, space planners and landscape architects and designers throughout the region were invited to submit their stand-out projects for recognition. The creativity, innovation, complexity and innate talent that are evident in each entry made selecting the winners a difficult task.
The award entries were divided into several specific categories with several dozen categories having nominations. In the July/August and September issues, 28 winning projects were featured in a variety of categories under the collective titles of “Entertaining Spaces” and “Intimate Spaces.” As a finale, this issue features the whole-house Top Design project, our top pick of all entries. Congratulations to our winner! (See page 27 for a complete listing of this year’s winners.)

This glamorous dining room is centered on a white-topped dining table that was selected to balance the pale hues of the area rug. An original painting over the mirrored buffet ties in Mediterranean blue accent colors used throughout the room. Adding to the “bling” factor are drapery panels with crystal embellishments. The room’s crowning effect is a trio of cut crystal orb pendant lights hung at varied heights in lieu of a traditional chandelier.
Accent WallAn accent wall in the living room is painted with a color-block pattern as a backdrop for the white lacquer beverage cabinet and lighted pedestals.
FoyerCustom designed iron doors open into the home’s foyer, which includes a lighted niche. Its back wall is painted a darker shade to accent the glass art sculpture.
FireplaceThe living room’s fireplace wall features “Storm Over the Marsh,” a contemporary representation of Louisiana marshlands. Grass arrangements further develop the nature theme.

[ LOCAL FLAVOR ]
As the mercury starts to recede
and winter vegetables start
hitting the markets, my style of
cooking reflects the change of season.
Comforting, warm and classic describe
my version of fall/winter recipes utilizing
pumpkin, kale, beets and other hearty
and earthy vegetables. Satisfied with the
seasonal bounty, I might just be able to
wait for next year’s berry-picking season.
Among this month’s featured recipes
is a soulful, heart-healthy and flavor-
packed Kale, Shrimp & White Bean Soup.
Worthy as an entrée when paired with a
grilled slice of rustic bread like ciabatta,
this soup also works as a starter and pairs
nicely with a lighter slice of sourdough or
French baguette.
Sweet Potato & Spinach “Lasagna”
makes a wonderful side dish or party
casserole that I love to bring to pot-luck
style dinners. It’s a perfect vegetarian
entrée and pairs well with a mixed green
salad for a great light lunch that is easy
to prepare ahead of time and
reheat an hour or so before
service. If you’re cooking
for one or two, I suggest
preparing the recipe in
smaller, oven-proof or
disposable aluminum baking
pans to freeze for later
use as a quick, oven-
ready option.
Now, if you’re into
really simple cooking, try the Butternut
Squash Gratin recipe. It has very few
ingredients and is remarkably good.
This dish is a favorite of one of my all-
time favorite chefs, Jacques Pepin. The
French are known for turning the simple
into the sublime and this dish is a perfect
representation of how good simplicity
can taste.
Of course, winter vegetables can be
used for more than soups and casseroles,
evidenced by the fantastic Roasted Beet
Salad with Goat Cheese “Crouton”. This
versatile dish is a perfect starter for
a family gathering, a nice brunch
course or a standalone meal. Not a
fan of goat cheese? Do yourself a
favor and try the warm and crispy
goat cheese “croutons.” I think
you’ll find that the preparation
tames the cheese and
brings forth a savory
combination of taste
and texture.
Last but not least is a recipe utilizing
the most ubiquitous of all fourth-quarter
produce—the pumpkin. Pumpkin pie is
great, but I wouldn’t recommend it for
breakfast. This Spiced Pumpkin Bread,
however, works any time of day, from
breakfast to a snack or even as dessert.
Try it warm with a dollop of whipped
cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon with
hot tea or spiced apple cider as the
finishing touch to a meal based on the
bounty of nature’s cold weather pantry.

According to the LSU AgCenter, Louisiana is among the top producers of the nation’s sweet potatoes, which are high in fi ber and vitamin A, yet low in fat. Sweet potato crops are a full year in the making, harvested from August until early November. Following a 6-week curing process, sweet potatoes can be stored and sold for a year or longer. This profi table crop adds over $100 million to the Louisiana economy each year.

CANVAS Growing in the Acadiana
area, my grandparents were talented
artisans involved in the artists’ alliance.
Their mediums varied from large scale
macramé wall hangings and metal casting
to jewelry making. I grew up watching
my mother sew elaborate Mardi Gras
costumes and the creative environment
later inspired my work. In high school,
I became interested in drawing and
general creativity. Artistically, I was good
at a lot of things but I failed to find my
true talent. I studied Advertising Design
at USL in the early ’90s, but it wasn’t
until I took my first sculpture class that I
discovered my preferred medium.
PRIMER Advertising design was the
most practical application of my general
creative talents, or so I thought. After
a few years at work, my disillusionment
with my career came to a head with the
crushing end of a rather one-sided love
affair. My response was to dive into the
only thing that made me feel good about
myself: sculpture. I gave my notice of
resignation and became “The Chainsaw
Guy”. I was an artist living on the fringe
of society, defying all conventions of
practical career choice. After a few
months, my meager savings was spent
and my credit card was maxed out. I did,
however, have a ton of work and a spot
at the 2001 Festival International. After
that, doors started opening and sculpture
became my career.
MEDIA I like to describe my work as
“Modern Primitive” sculpture because of
the effluence of primitive styles combined
with use of modern tools. I use chainsaws,
grinders, sanders and a torch to cut,
burn and shape cedar. I also cut, shape
and bend metal and copper to work in
conjunction with the wooden forms.
GENRE I am best known for are my large
angel-like winged figures, large crosses
and a wide variety of fish sculptures.
INFLUENCE Early on I sought to distance
myself from subject matter that would
typically be termed “Cajun”. I was
interested in primitive tribal sculpture
and the drawing style of Tom Secrest.
As I got older and my work progressed,
influence of the local Acadiana culture
began to slowly work its way in and is
now arguably the dominant theme of my
current work.

DOLLARS & SENSE Typically my style
is defi ned by a series of techniques and
particular materials. All of my work has a
signature feel to it that is defi ned by my
chosen process. So in that respect, my
works are done primarily to my own liking.
That being said, select pieces have proven
to be consistently good sellers. With
custom projects, I encourage clients to
give me preferences and parameters as a
starting point and I take it from there.
SHOW My studio is open to visitors and
I show locally from time to time. Most
of my business comes from commission
work, patrons in New Orleans and events
like New Orleans Jazz Fest, Festival
International and the Woodlands Waterways
Festival. Upcoming shows include Festivals
Acadiens et Créoles, October 2-14 in
Lafayette, and the Three Rivers Art Festival,
November 10-11 in Covington.
AHEAD One day I intend to take my
fi gures to a new level and move into
bronze casting. I’d also like to take on an
apprentice (hopefully my son) and sell
exclusively through direct promotion and
the occasional gallery-style, one-man show. ■
