Planning-SetupPlanning-Setup

• Susan gets a location: UUNET in Nairobi

• Carl proposes “Skype” and “Sightspeed”

• Sightspeed: FREE software for audio/video linkup via the internet

• All we need: fast internet connection, webcam, headset and speakers

• We both download Sightspeed and Skype (for backup if Sightspeed fails)

• May 10 and 11 set• Time???? Nairobi is UTC +3. Berkeley is UTC -

7 (10 hours separate us!)• A compromise time: 4 – 7 PM Nairobi time, 6-9

AM Berkeley time• Practice run with Sightspeed and Skype from my

home a week before• Another practice from LBL (Berkeley) two days

before

Day 1Day 1• ~ 40 min late in starting…traffic jam in

Nairobi!!• Only 1-2 computers initially running with

HOU-IP…more later• We did Intro to IP: nature of digital

images, pixels, counts, x-y coordinates, palettes, zoom, log

• Slice tool: moon craters, “Fireball” image, ratios, actual size, compare to Earth

Day 2Day 2

• Angles in space; angular size

• Measurements with string and protractors: thumb and fist held at arm’s length

• Equations and calculations: moon and sun. Same angular size…hmmm?

• Subtracting Jupiter images: see moons move

• Diplomas to all at the end!!

The software is already installed in the Kenya High School computersso if we can get the books then it will be possible for the teachersto practice with the software. Also once we are ready to use theinternet UUNET will be able to increase the bandwidth for the daysthat we will have similar training via videoconferencing.
