It’s Time for The 28th Gallop Stallion Services Auction

Just around the corner, scheduled for Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino, the Gallop

Stallion Service Auction annual event takes place. Once again presented by Rhodes River Ranch, the upcoming auction will mark its twenty-eighth year since the event started. The event will kick off at 12:00 noon, PST, enabling national and inter-national locations to participate in the bidding. All stallions will be presented on thirty-foot screens at the event, while Internet on-lookers will be able to watch the event streamed live to their computers, see a flashing toll free number, place a call to one of our Gallop phone operators, and bid on ser-vices of any stallion in the line-up.

This is your opportunity to help a family in crisis who needs to be with their child in a hospital. How can you do that? Well, first mark your calendars for Sunday, January 30, 2011 for one of the Na-tion’s most successful fund-raising Equine Events - the Gallop Stallion Services Auc-tion!

The Gallop Annual Charity Auction is rated as one of the best in the country for services to be offered! It has been professed each year to have the most impressive lineup ever. And, it’s true. Every year new stallion owners join the ranks of current Gallop stallion donors in wanting to support the

mission! This year’s event has stallions participating from Kentucky, Wash-ington, Texas, Cali-fornia, Mississippi, Utah, Oklahoma, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, Arkansas, Colo-rado, Wyoming, Arizona, South Da-kota, Ohio, Iowa, Oregon, and Minnesota. Stallion breeding fees range from $500 to $6,500 per service. “We like to keep a pocket book range for everyone to have the chance to be a part of the event, mission, and heighten the bar of their breeding program,” explained Gallop Event Manager, Barbara Turner. This year’s event offers services to National & Con-gress Champions, World & Reserve Champions (nearly half of the line-up are two-time World Champions, while others are five times or more World Champions). Many of you will recognize their names, as they are leading sires of their breed, producing World and Reserve World Champion offspring. You will have the opportunity to purchase services to some of the finest Halter, Western Pleasure, Hunt Seat, Working Cow, Cutting, and Reining stallions in the world!

The 2011 Stallion lineup is closed, while the website is nearing its completion on the non-service auction items. This is a time when you should do some homework on the mare care facilities, costs, and breeding procedures of stallion and ranches that are on your list. It also gives you an opportunity to take a close-up look at these stallions. Visit the Gallop web-site for more in-sightful information at www.gallopauc-tion.com. If you are looking at trans-porting semen, be sure to research by Internet or con-tact those stallion owners prior to the event to find out

or breeding farms. Can’t, or don’t think, you can make it to the event? Pre-

bidding is currently being accepted, or bid live the day of the Gallop event, Sunday, January 30th, with one of the Gallop telephone operators. Go to the website: www.gallopauction.com, starting at 11:00 AM (Pacific Standard Time), you will find within the Gallop template a flashing toll free number for you to call. Have your credit card ready with information the operator will be asking, and try not to call in earlier than one to two services before your interested service hits the auction block. Not going to be near a computer the day of the event? On the road, working, hauling home from a horse show, maybe you’re not confident with your dial up speed, or you’re not computer friendly? Let Barb Turner know ahead of the event and arrangements can be made to contact you be-fore your interested service comes up on the auction block.

Event underwriter Rhodes River Ranch returns in their tenth year of presenting the Gallop Event. They are located at the foothills of the Cascades, just an hour and a half north of Seattle/Tacoma International Airport in beautiful Arling-ton, Washington. They offer many in the Equine Industry (or not), an opportunity to additionally support and participate for those who do not have mares to breed, or any horses for that matter. These packages will continue to be added through the last week prior to the auction. Keep checking the website for additional packages.

performed at the Gallop events for over a decade will entertain the audience and Internet viewers along with the highly skilled performers, comedians, and ac-tors Randy Wilcox, and Kevin Wakefield. These talented performers will feature impersonations of rock stars such as Di-ana Ross, Madonna, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mick Jagger, Little Richard, Michael Jack-son, Celine Deon, Taylor Swift, and many more. Their amazing showmanship and truly fantastic renditions of oldies favor-ites, Motown, Disco, 70’s Classics, 80’s Hits and more are sure to create a festive vibe and bring spectators to their feet!

But, don’t forget with all this auction excitement, our primary mission. All net proceeds from the Gallop Stallion Ser-vices Auction go to the Ronald McDon-ald House Charities of Spokane, enabling

them to continue serving thousands of families.Imagine if your child were sick. What would you do if

you had to fly to a hospital in a different city far from your home? Would you know where to go? When you arrived at the hospital, where would you put your extra clothes? Where would you shower? Where would you wash your clothes? Who would you turn to for help? These and many other ques-tions are answered daily by volunteers at Ronald McDonald House.

House Charities of SpokaneFamilies are provided temporary lodging, comfort and sup-

port while their children are accessing medical services. These basic needs are met while they help their children overcome their medical struggles. The House provides a consistent and caring helping hand, lessening the mental and financial strain on the families. It allows them to focus on the most important thing ... supporting their children. One parent was heard to say, “If we did not have the Ronald McDonald House, we would have had to sleep in our van or commute the hour and a half to the hospital when it was possible.” One child’s mother and grandparents stayed 23 nights. The mother said, “I didn’t want to leave my daughter but also couldn’t afford

to stay in a motel for what we knew would be a long stay. We are eter-nally grateful to the Ronald McDonald House.”

Unfortunately, comments like the ones above are the reality of a mul-titude of families living at the Ronald McDonald House. Fortunately, people like you support the mission when participating in the Gallop Event!

In sharing some facts with you about the Ronald McDonald House Charities …since January through September 2010, 126 meals have been prepared by volunteers. Volunteers come to the house two or three times a week and prepare meals for the families. Over 40 families have stayed at the RMH for at least one night. On average, there is

a daily waiting list of 15 families needing lodging. A total of 5,410 overnight stays have been provided by the RMH of Spo-kane during this period of time last year. This includes the 21 rooms at the House and the Sacred Heart Family Rooms. All families are welcome regardless of their ability to pay the $24 nightly fee. Over 40 dozen cookies have been baked for fami-lies to enjoy. Everyone loves freshly baked cookies! Three-hundred siblings have made the Ronald McDonald House their home. The House is a place of comfort for the siblings. They need a place to snack, read, play, and nap while the family accesses the necessary medical services. There were 24 families who helped their children fight cancer while stay-ing at the House from January through September of this past year.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane is indebted to Gallop’s Sponsors, Committee Members, and Stallion Own-ers for their support in both the RMHC mission and Gallop Auction.

You can be a part of the RMHC family. You can make a direct impact on the life of a child today. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spo-kane looks forward to seeing you all at the Gallop Stallion Service Auction on Sunday, January 30, 12:00 PM for a “Fun”-raising event. For more infor-mation about Gallop, or the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spo-kane, please contact Barbara Turner at 509/990-4167.

Diamond StudsKrisean Performance Horses “Life With the Blue-Eyed Wonders” by Jill Smith

Oh my gosh, it couldn’t already be “that” time of year again, could it? With the days getting longer and spring somewhere just around the corner, things will start changing at the ranch. The stallions will begin to have other thoughts beyond just greeting me and nuzzling my pockets for treats. Pretty soon little pictures of MARES will start dancing in their eyes and their minds will dwell on only one thing.

I headed out to the corral to see if Commander, my perlino, Quarter Horse stallion had figured out that winter time was ending and spring was going to move right on in. I rounded the barn and stopped as my big, white, blue-eyed wonder came charging up.

“I want a stud”, Commander bluntly stated. There was no nice “Hi, how are you”, no “What ya doing?” there was just a wide, blue-eyed statement backed by the demand of testos-terone! Ahhhh, stallions!

“Commander, you could have at least have said hello be-fore you launched right into studdiness!” I indignantly replied. Then I had a thought. I might be able to side track him from studs and mares with a little English lesson. I don’t know where this stallion learned to talk, but I found that when you have a horse that talks, he can easily get confused over the ins and outs of the English language!

“Besides, you are not using correct English in your de-mand,” I haughtily commented. “You meant to say that you

want ‘to be’ a stud.” Oh, I can be smug at times! I was sure that I had the upper hand and hoof in this con-versation now!

Commander cocked one blue eye at me, looked thoughtful and finally said, “You can put wood studs in the barn wall to frame it in, you can play stud poker, the park can be studded with daisies, decorative studs are applied to shirts and in the winter you have studded tires. But I want a diamond stud!!!!!”

OK, so much for dumb animals. I was more amused than anything else. Just where does he get these ideas? A diamond stud? “So you want adiamond stud? Just where do you think you’re going to putthis diamond stud?” I asked.

“Most self respecting stallions wear their diamond stud on their ear, just like humans.” Commander knew he had my cu-rious attention now. “It’s been known to enhance their looks

and desirability. Just picture a stallion running through the pastures, mane blowing in the wind, muscles rippling under his taunt skin, hooves thundering on the ground and the glint of a diamond in his ear catching the sun.”

“Ahhhh, are we talking about ‘you’ in this picture, ‘cause you haven’t been exercising much lately.” I couldn’t resist teasing him but then as I dropped my eyes to my own winter tummy roll, I decided to hastily drop the fitness comments!

Commander again gave me the blue-eyed stare but calmly stated, “I see you know nothing about the latest fashion for stallions, nor do you even seem to care how I look.”

“You are a stud; you’re not supposed to wear studs!!!!” I could barely contain myself. “Just how do you think it looks when I bring mare owners here and my stallion is prancing around the pasture with diamonds in his ears? I need to go out and find you good mares, run ads for you, and show you as a respectable breeding stud!”

There was a nicker snicker and the blue eyes started twin-kling. Very innocently Commander said, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about the breeding season and you going out to find mares. I’m glad to see you are so interested and brought the subject up yourself.”

Owwwwwww, I’d been set up! This diamond stud stuff was really all about the approach of “that” time of year! He’d led me right into talking about it. Don’t anyone out there even think that you want a stallion that talks or you will all end up feeling at moments like me … a dumb blonde!

“I do have to tell you that we have created a new sign for

the barn wall.” Commander still had a gleam in his blue eyes. “The Don-key is very good at painting letters with a paintbrush in his mouth.”

I turned around and there was the sign that said it all.

“Diamonds are forever, but studs are for now!”

Yes, life with the talking blue-eyed wonder is always in-teresting!

Disc Two is an appreciation piece on Johnny Carson inwhich Baxter joins a couple of other fellows in a pleasurably stimulating panel discussion about entertainment, filmed in Baxter’s own sitting room, adorned by a buck head mounted on the wall over a stuffed coyote. It revolves around Baxter’s appearances on the Tonight Show from 1985 to 1992, includ-ing the AARP (Animal Accident Recovery Patrol) poem onhis 5th appearance with guest Dyan Cannon, and the 1988 second appearance with Johnny’s substitute for the evening,Jay Leno. Dial L for Laughter.

What these two video discs bring you is a modern elec-tronic upgrade to Robert Service, only with a formidable mus-tache and cowboy garb. Imagine the evolution of Baxter’s mustache through the years, starting with Karl Marx without the beard or the grudge; Mark Twain without the over bite; Groucho, without the dye; Wilford Brimley without the gut; or Sam Elliott without the beef. Behind that perfect stache looms the rare capability to invent entertaining threads ofsubtlety, again and again for over 25 years, without the com-plications of grossness or obscenity. Couple this talent with the discipline of timing, and you’ve got the happy slant on life. Baxter brings you a first principle of comedy: the deep, extended guttural laugh. Play his discs and see for yourself.

Ann Kirk’s SENSIBLE HORSEMANSHIPIn the Saddle - Follow the Nose

ageable. This is one of my favorite exercises for warming upa horse before starting a ride or before adding more stressful training. It is also great for cooling a horse down who has justbeen pushed to learn or slowing a horse who is anxious on the trail.

Though serpentines denote an ‘S’ shaped pattern, that is not what I am focusing on when I teach this lesson. If I con-centrate on making an ‘S’ shaped pattern, I have to releasewhen the horse is still pulling on the bit far too much. It iscalled serpentines only because when your horse learns the exercise well, he will do the ‘S’ pattern without you even hav-ing to think about it. Where I am going to finish is not whereI am going to start.

This exercise has 2 parts to it and the order is a must. First, the horse must follow his nose and change directions when the slack is taken out of the rein. Second, he must give to the bit. The ground exercise that correlates with this lesson is working on the circle. It will help your saddle time to review the give from the ground so use the circle portion of the BridleDance to warm your horse up and prepare him for mounting. Then when you get on it will be fresh in his mind.

Just a little side note here. It has been shown that rides6-10 are usually the most dangerous on a newly started horse. I believe this is directly related to the time spent warming up. Because each ride should get progressively better as the

January is here. Winter is upon us so let’s enjoy its beauty and experience the season. I know horse train-ing isn’t quite as much fun when your fingers are cold and your toes are numb but there will be nice days when you just can’t stand to stay in the house any longer and the call of the wild pulls you outdoors to spend time with your horse. So I want to share another great exercise to work on on those days.

Connecting the rein to the hip is the best technique for safety but walking or trot-

ting serpentines is the best for teaching you and your horse to relax. Trotting serpentines is the most effective pacifier I have come across in all my searching for ways to better com-municate with my horse. When done correctly and practiced enough to become habit, they can be employed almost any-where to give you something to focus on so you don’t worry and to soften and relax your horse so he becomes more man-

ing sides. Don’t hold him for more than 5 seconds beforereleasing and moving on. You don’t want him to get comfort-able leaning on the bit. Just stay consistent and he will beginto give in anticipation of the release.

If he is not giving nicely after several sessions or hours ofthis lesson, you should go back to the ground and improvehis give on the circle. Then, when you get in the saddle, youneed to set your hand and hold for as long as it takes to getthe give. This may take some time so be prepared to walk ina circle for several rotations. The give is important to establishbecause it is in the give that the horse relaxes, even if only fora moment. As you build on that give, asking over and overagain, that momentary relaxing becomes a priceless responsewhich calms your horse when he is anxious or excited. It isone of the best techniques you will ever teach.

You will see the greatest results if you do this exercise forat least 20 minutes at a time. Teach at a walk then move tothe trot. Your horse will learn to carry himself in a nice archon the circle with softness through the whole body. He willlearn to trot slowly and relaxed as you are not controlling hisspeed, you are just focusing his direction and the amount oftime he moves. You don’t need a lot of room for this exerciseso find an open spot and enjoy! Until next time, take care andGod Bless.

horse gets more comfortable, we usually get more confident and reduce the warm-up time too soon. And we will begin insisting the horse performs quicker instead of asking nicely and being gentle. It pays big dividends to take a little extra time. The preparation is worth its weight in gold and the per-formance will become solid soon enough.

Once you are mounted and have disengaged his hips a few times to each side, use your reins to get him moving forward. Remember to use ‘middle’ hand and ‘active’ hand so you can make corrections quickly and smoothly if needed. If you haven’t already, you can teach him to move forward with your legs. Pick up one rein and turn his head slightly to the side. Kiss to him as you squeeze and then bump softly with both legs. Use the rein to step him to the side and stop the kiss and the bump as soon as he moves his feet. Repeat on the same side 4-5 times before switching. If he moves too much, disengage his hip and start again. If he stops after only a few steps, pet him and start again, each time reducing the amount of time he gets to stand. Don’t get in the habit of trying to “keep” him walking as your constant cuing will desensitize him to your legs and the nagging can be irritating. The horse may react negatively so discipline yourself to give the cue, get the response and stop the cue even if you have to cue again in just a few seconds. Take the time to teach him to keep moving on his own.

When your horse is walking consistently, begin the serpen-tine exercise. Using the ‘middle’ hand, ‘active’ hand method, start to the left. Lift the right ‘middle’ hand and gather the slack in your left ‘active’ hand. Tip the horse’s head about 4-6 inches to the side and wait for his response. When the horse follows his nose by turning to the left, release the rein and switch sides. Don’t bring the horse’s nose too far off to the side as you don’t want him walking forward when his neck is over flexed. If he leans out through his shoulder, pick the rein up far enough to disengage his hip. Then walk him forward to make the turn. This teaches the first step of the serpentine. Continue this part until he will follow his nose each time.

Now for the second part. When you pick up the rein, bring your hand back and set it firmly on your left leg just above your knee. Straighten your arm and set it down where it reaches without leaning forward. By doing this, you have a stable reference point which makes it easier to recognize when he gives. With him following his nose in a circle, wait for him to drop slack in the rein before releasing and switch-

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSEby Baxter Black, DVM

The Catfish InstituteSeveral years ago I made a commercial for the Catfish

Institute. Their office was in Belzoni, Mississippi. The commercial concluded, “…just write in care of Miz June. That’s B-E-L-Z-O-N-I. You learned to spell Mississippi in grade school!”

I have spent most of my life in the mountain west so trout has been my primary fish source. But I come from deep Oklahoma roots and, from my youth, I have been a frequent visitor to my Okie farmer kinfolks. Each one had a pond stocked with bass and catfish. Catfish almost tastes like meat, whereas trout tastes like fish.

Anybody who lives in the S.E.C., South East College Football Conference, appreciates that catfish beats country ham and red-eye gravy as the supper of choice, most of the time. Catfish is to the south what chile is to the southwest, brisket is to Texas, crabs to the Chesapeake Bay, pizza to middle-school soccer moms, and porridge is to Minnesota.

Catfish on the menu still flourishes but the local catfish farmer’s market is in decline for the 6th straight year. Reason: Cheaper imported catfish primarily from Asia. Sound familiar?

Just ask the three sheepherders still in the United States, or askan American Lumberjack if you can find one, or a shoemaker or steelworker.

America is still capable of supplying all our catfish needs but raising them is now being “outsourced”. The Catfish Instituteblames higher grain prices as a factor, but I’m guessing evenif soybeans and corn dropped to less than a dollar and theUSDA and EPA removed all the catfish regulations, the Mong,Vietnamese and Chinese could still furnish it cheaper! The Institute is pushing for a mandatory “Country of Origin” labelinglaw. It seems to be having a dampening effect on our Mexicanbeef imports.

But if Miz June called me and said, “Bax, what can we doto compete with foreign catfish farmers?” I would point to themost successful “value added” (which means you can chargemore) program that I know: Certified Angus Beef. On a private sector level look at Dole Pineapple, Diamond Walnuts, Omaha Beef, Washington Apples, Idaho Potatoes, French Toast,Belgian waffles and why are Florida Oranges worth more thanEdmonton Oranges or Milwaukee Oranges?

Distinguish your product from imports with name brandslike: “Cajun Catfish, raised on Zydeco music!”

“The Crimson Catfish, each granted an honorary degree fromUniversity of Alabama!” Talk about a school of fish!

“Bentonville Catfish, with the WalMart Seal of Approval!”How ‘bout “Mississippi River Baptized Catfish, sprinkled for

Catholics and dunked for Baptists!”Right now I’m getting hungry for some good ol’ catfish

cookies, or a dish of catfish ice cream…with red eye gravy,of course!
