Kids Movie Night They're back! Our first Kids Movie Night of the year was a nice success. Thank you to our volunteers and all the Lil' Moosers that joined us. A great time was had by all, including me. Even Tommy Moose made a special appearance with a gift for all the children in attendance. Our next KMN, is scheduled for Friday, May 26 @ 7pm. Movie of choice is.... Moana! Bring your little ones to join us, and you can hang out too or enjoy dinner and our Social Quarter’s entertainment. Feel free to let your little ones invite a friend also. As always, this is a free event for all and we'll be serving popcorn and soda (caffeine free). An adventurous Polynesian teenager sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought:

her own identity. Brian Carpenter, Governor

Governor's Message As the newest Governor of the Hopewell Moose Lodge, I want to thank

you for giving me this opportunity. For many of you who have experi-

enced life as a board member, you know this role can come with re-

wards & challenges. I ask your patience, and understanding for me as

well as the entire Board of Officers as we grow into our positions. Alt-

hough several Officers have previously served on the board, there is al-

ways a learning curve as we transition into a different position. Please

be patient with us.

One of my first goals as Governor is promote a more positive attitude in

our lodge with all our brother & sisters. I ask you to think before you

speak and ask yourself if this comment could be said in a better way or

at a better time. If you have ideas to present, don’t start off with "you

need to..." or "Ya'll should...". Consider starting with something like, "

maybe we can...".

If we aren't willing to contribute to lifting a brother up, then we may be

the weight that is taking him down. Think before we speak, reflect on

what we have to share & offer a positive response.

And now here is a brief version of the legend of the Locked Horns.

In the wilds of the northland two noble moose, leaders of their herds, met

in deadly combat. Today their locked antlers are evidence of their battle

as they lie bleaching on the plains… let us not be blind to the lesson of

the Locked Horns.

Think of what your actions and words may really say about you. Be a

brother that promotes the integrity of our lodge.

Brian Carpenter, Governor

Administrator Message

By the time you read this, the dust will have settled, from one of the most challenging weekends, a moose lodge can endure. We have successfully hosted the 23rd annual Moose International Dart Tournament. This event took months of planning, countless hours of work by our bartenders, waitress-es, kitchen staff, office staff, and the "backbone" of any successful lodge..Volunteers. Thank you is not enough, for all those who gave of them-selves, to help and represent OUR lodge. To our members, thank you for your patience and sharing your home, during that weekend, as we wel-comed members, from all 50 states and Cana-da.

Fraternally,

Brad Ozmore,

Administrator

Senior Regents Message Hello Co-Workers, As we enter a new year here at the Moose I would like to share one of my goals for the upcoming year as senior re-gent. The one thing I have noticed in the 2 years I have been a member is that there are only a few members that come regularly to the Wednesday meetings and I would like to see our numbers increase. If there is a specific reason you aren’t attending let me know and I will do everything I can to make it so you will want to come to the meetings. The meetings are every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month and last between 45 min and an hour and on the 1st Wednesday we have refreshments after the meeting so everyone can talk and get to know each other. I hope to see more of you at the meeting! We also need to increase our membership numbers, and while we have applications coming in some of them do not have signatures on the back and we need those for the application to be reviewed so please make sure the applicants are signing before turning them in. I hope to have a lot of fun this upcoming year and am excited to be here as your senior regent if you have any questions or comments you can call me I may not answer if I am at work but you can leave a voicemail and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Your Senior Regent, Pamela Harsh

WOTM NEWS This past week, the WOTM helped the Easter Bunny celebrate with our chil-dren and seniors. Special thanks to our chairmen Marie Matlock and Mary Simmons for organiz-ing both of these wonderful events. Thank you to all the vol-unteers that assisted, it couldn't be done without YOU! On Saturday, April 8th, children had a pancake breakfast with bunny, games, prizes and an egg hunt in the park. Then on Tues-

day, April 11th, we helped our seniors at the Health Care Center celebrate with refreshments, an Easter Bonnet contest, songs and gift bags for the residents. If you are interested in help-ing with events like these, please contact ANY of the Women of the Moose. "Our Children• Our Seniors• Our City" ~ D.M. Ozmore

POLICE MEMORIAL BREAKFAST

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer Memori-al Day. Over the years, this grew into officers from all 50 states gathering at the police memorial in Washington DC to honor their fallen brothers and sisters in blue. Police de-partments from all over the United State of America honor the fallen on this day. Over the past few years the Hopewell Moose Lodge has had the privilege of hosting the Police Memorial Service for the local police de-partments. Our staff and volunteers pre-pare, set-up and serve breakfast to over a hundred law officers, their fami-ly and the family of fallen local offic-ers. There's never a dry eye when you ex-perience this event. May 17 at 9am, we will be hosting, as Ft Lee Police Depart-ment takes charge of this years event. Please call the of-fice if you want to help and be a part of this special morning.

PRELATES CORNER Please contact the office to report an illness or death of a Brother or Family member @ 804-458-1755 Sickness: Jack Hite Dickie Garret Jim Cates in hospital Mark and John Marshall's mother had knee replacement Passed: Jerry Wayne Burcham Sr. It is now 9 o'clock, and the little children at Mooseheart kneel by their beds to say their evening prayers. Let us face towards Mooseheart, bow our heads, and join them in Silent Prayer. (Bell Tolls 9 Times) Repeat after me... Let the little children come to me. Do not keep them away. For they are like the kingdom of Heaven.

GOD BLESS Mooseheart!

"Kid's Karaoke Contest" The Hopewell Moose Lodge hosted our first ever "Kid’s Karaoke Contest", on April 8th, 2017. As our Lodge continues to look for innovative ways to incorporate children and families; Dawn Ozmore, our Jr. Graduate Regent, suggested a kid's karaoke contest. During the planning phase, we decided "why limit contestants to just the Hopewell Moose Lodge?" Since we are ALL MOOSE, regardless of our lodge affiliation, let’s ask other lodges to participate! The response was amazing. Four different lodges made the trip to participate. What an amazing group of talent! These kids sung their heart out and provided an early evening of “FAMILY” entertainment. Taylor Carter, brother of one of the contestants, said, “I thought it was just a bar. I had no idea these are the types of activities that go on behind these walls.” That evening he signed up to be a Moose. The lodge looks forward to hosting another such event in the fall.

Congratulations to: Aliyah Carter, Amelia Rainey, Lily Jackson, McKayla Thomas, Kaylynn Allison & Sophia Gonzalez (not pictured). Trophies, Visa gift cards, and season passes to Kings Dominion were some of the great prizes that our contest-ants won.

Special thanks to our judges: Sheryl Taylor Ross, Ryan Jackson, Sherry Taylor & Emily Guthrie. To our lodge staff & volunteers, DJ/Karaoke host Richard Nunnally, and most im-portantly- to all the parents, grandparents, family & friends that made this possible.

•Sandston, •Louisa, •Manchester and •Hopewell; thank you for your participation, support & encouragement for these children!

LIGHTHOUSE FAMILIES BATTLING CHILDHOOD CANCER

Chris and Heather Strack are joining their church, Journey Christian Church, on a mis-

sion trip to Lighthouse Retreat in Destin, FL. At Lighthouse families battling childhood

cancer are able to take a week off and reconnect the family unit. Chris and Heather will

serve the families all week by cleaning their rooms, playing with the kids (can you say

beach time!), getting to know the family, praying with them and for them, serving their

meals, and the list goes on and on. One of the biggest ways we serve the families is

through financial donations. The families accepted to go to Lighthouse Retreat don't pay

a penny! That is where the Hopewell Moose Lodge come in! The lodge donated $750 to

assist in their journey. The total cost is $5000.00 to send a family battling childhood

cancer on this awesome retreat. The lodge offered to assist Chris and Heather with their

travel but in true Moose tradition the couple feels it is their calling to burden the cost and

vacation to provide relief for those in need. If you would like more information about

Lighthouse Retreat go to lighthouseretreat.org. and checkout the website! ---Again Je-

sus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk

in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Eagle Scout National Jamboree

The Hopewell Moose Lodge donated $750 to assist Drake Hannuksela in attending the

National Jamboree. Drake was selected by

the Heart of Virginia Council to represent

central Virginia at the 2017 Boy Scout Na-

tional Jamboree. Attending the National

Jamboree is a once in a lifetime experience

for any dedicated Boy Scout. In 2013,

30,037 youth and adult instructors attended

the National Jamboree and 326 of those

youth were from 18 different countries out-

side of the United States.

The National Jamboree is a 10 day event

that is held once every four years and held on 10,600 acres near the New River Gorge

Recreation Area. Some of the activities offered at the National Jamboree include: Stem

Quest for High Technologies, State of the Art Exhibits, Numerous Merit Badges, Leader-

ship and Citizenship Skills, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Rock Climbing, Scuba Diving

and Zip lines.

He obtained the rank of Life scout (the last rank before becoming an Eagle Scout) in

March 2017. Drake’s current plan is to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout by the summer

of 2018 at the age of 16. He is currently a ninth grade student at N.B. Clements Junior

High in Prince George and an active in Oakland Baptist Church.

Ricky Williams: Show Contact 804-691-3754 [email protected] You heard me but you'll hear them far louder. They are back by popular demand, The Hopewell Moose Lodge 2nd Annual Car and Bike Show. Last year I was hoping for at least 40 participants but honestly expecting about 20 cars, trucks and motorcycles. Well with the great help of our host, the Southern Knight Cruisers we had over 70 autos who participated. This resulted in a donation to Fort Lee's Holiday Helpers of $3000! What a great effort for a tremendous organization and very worthwhile cause. This year we anticipate many more participants and with more vendors, children's activi-ties and lots more beautiful cars, trucks and bikes. I know many missed this event last year as it was the same day as the Massey Cancer Golf Tournament which is on a differ-ent date and sponsored by Williamsburg this year so I hope more members and guest will attend and enjoy these works of art and hear the story of the owners. Several of our members not only participated but won trophies as well. So, if you have a car, truck or motorcycle that you are proud of, bring it. It's sure to be a great time by all young and older, guys and gals, and all while helping to raise money for those who do so much for us, our soldiers and their families. This event is open to the public so even more can enjoy all that we'll have to offer. Brian Carpenter, Governor
