Senior Regents Message

If you are tired of the three H's, hot, hazy and humid, relief is in sight. September, our ninth calendar month and popularly the

first month of Autumn, is the transition month between summer and fall. September is preeminently the harvest month. That was its name (Harvest) in Charlemagne's calendar, and it is still so called in Switzerland. In ancient times the Anglo-Saxons called it the barley month, from the crop usually harvested then. The full moon appearing in September is called the 'harvest moon'. As you know, the Virginia State Conference was held in Norfolk, August 24-28. Hopewell #1180 had the pleasure of being the Hostess Chapter for this year's events. The Board of Officers for the WOTM would like to thank each of you that helped with the planning of this successful event. We all had a great time and in the process learned a lot more about our organization. For an escape from your regular routine, meet your friends in the Social Quar-ters on Wednesday and Friday evenings for a delicious dinner prepared by our new Chef, Steve Nugent. There will be a good selection of choices, a Moose Plate special plus at least two other specials. As always, on the third Thursday each month, we will have the Senior Luncheon. This is a very popular and well attended event that you would be sure to enjoy. The WOTM will have their annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, September 24 from 8:00AM to 2:00PM. Hint, hint...For best choices, preview night will be Friday 23rd. For more excitement, we will have a 25 Cent Bingo night on the 28th of Sep-tember beginning at 7:00 PM. Congratulations to Marie Matlock on your remarkable achievement of reaching the 400 DIVISION of the MOOSE 25 CLUB! With your special dedication and perse-verance, you have helped secure the fu-ture of many children at Mooseheart & seniors at Moosehaven. Marie Matlock joined our chapter in 1969, and has been an active co-worker and in-spirational leader throughout her 47 years of service history. Marie Matlock began sponsoring new members in 1972, earned her Academy of Friendship in 1977, served as Senior Regent, and earned her College of Regents Degree in 1985. In 2009, co-worker Marie Matlock earned the "Lifetime Member Sta-tus" with 250 sponsorships.....and she didn't quit there! Her dili-gence and commitment to strengthening the Chapter & Order is stel-lar. Please join us in congratulating Marie as she has recently reached 400 sponsorships to date, and has reached a new pinnacle in the Division. Your achievement is an example to all of us. ~D.M. Ozmore

MESSAGE Brother's Wow!!!! Look at all we have done in just one month. We've had a great shrimp feast, a member-ship orientation (the first one in a long time) with more to come and our kitchen manager (Steve Nugent) started Aug 1st and by the time you read this newsletter our Queen of Hearts will be over $9,000 hopefully. Member-ship keeps growing. This is truly 1472 PRIDE at work which is a new article. There are many articles that I can talk about but they are in the newslet-ter, so I don't want to steal anyones thunder. I'll let you read it. Now Something we should all be proud of is our past governor Troy King. He received the Governor's Award for the second year. A well deserved award from Moose International Headquarters for the 2015 /16 year as Governor of the Hopewell Lodge 1472. When you see Troy shake his hand and thank him for all his hard work. With that being said there is someone just as deserv-ing, his wife Cindy King. She can use a hand shake or a hug. I've only known Troy & Cindy a short while and to me they are truly team players, players I would like on our team any day. Thank You Troy for all you do for our lodge. This is the best example when everyone works to-gether through thick and thin everyone comes out a winner. From the top, to the middle, to the lower. MOOSE PRIDE 1472 & CHAPTER 1180 Hopewell Moose members, take a moment. Take a

deep breath, exhale, and say "We made it"! When

faced with change, you can do one of three things:

resist it, flee, or face it head on and work through

it. Since the departure of the majority of the

kitchen personnel on July 17th, not one single

event was canceled. Our weekly Bingo's, Queen of

Hearts, Feeding the Needy Program, Senior

Lunch, Trivia, and private events (wedding/

funeral receptions), were provided as planned.

Not only that, but our members did not have to

stray from our Wednesday & Friday night dinner

service. THANK YOU ALL, for your patience, but most importantly, for

your support. You could have easily chosen to stay home or go some-

where else; but you chose us, even in the midst of change & uncertainty.

A testament to the quality & character of our members who recognize

that it's bigger than us. By supporting us, you are supporting the com-

munity, Mooseheart & Moosehaven.

Again, a big "Thank You" to all the

volunteers from our lodge, and from

Colonial Heights and Manchester

Moose Lodge for assisting us. Special

mention of gratitude to Karen Whit-

tington for working 15 days straight

& helping to keep our volunteers on

task in the kitchen.

There were 58 Mem-bers in attend-ance and the winner of the Moose Bucks for this month was Libbie Dragoo. Make your plans to attend next month on 15 Sep for a great time.

Moosehaven Centennial Project

Moosehaven, in conjunction with Moose Charities, launched

its newest project, the Centennial Project. This project has

several goals, which include: improving the quality of life for

Traditional residents, adding a substantive, dynamic hous-

ing option to the Moosehaven complex, providing Moose re-

tirees an upgraded, enhanced, superior quality living oppor-

tunity and reducing operating expenses for Moosehaven.

This project will culminate in a new

home and a new life for each of our

Traditional residents. This new build-

ing will provide larger apartments,

and each will have a deck or patio

(depending on floor), private bath-

rooms and expanded closet space. Flexible apartments per-

mit residents to remain in their homes despite significant

life-changes, such as loss of a spouse or decreasing mobili-

ty. It also reduces the number of moves that must be ac-

complished throughout a resident’s lifetime at Moosehaven.

To date, the Hopewell Moose Lodge has donated $14,250

thanks to the LOOM, Moose Legion and WOTM.

Upcoming Events Sept. 5- Labor Day Celebration in the park: Lots of fun, food, games, and music for eve-

ryone. $5.00 buys your picnic lunch, DJ entertainment with Chip Cook, corn hole and

other games, FREE MOOSE MILK and much, much, more. Everyone come and enjoy

Labor Day birthday here at the Moose!!!!

Sept 10- Steve Owens and the Summertime Band will kick off our 2016-2017 enter-

tainment series. They have been here many times and they always bring the variety of

musical hits that suits everyone. They deliver the best in top 40, beach, country and

southern soul. Advanced tickets will be $15, $18 at the door. This will be a non-smoking

event. BYOB

October 1- The Central Virginia Junior Shaggers will hold their annual “Shag Jam.”

This is free to all juniors and everyone is invited to attend and see what these young peo-

ple enjoy so much. Detail on scheduling and activities will be in next month’s newsletter

and will be posted on facebook. We just wanted you to put this date on your calendar.

October 14- The Moose Legion will sponsor a dance featuring FEATURE AT-

TRACTION BAND. These guys have performed for us before and they always bring a

party to the lodge that is enjoyed by everyone. Details on the event will be posted in next

month’s newsletter and on facebook.

Oct 29- The Pizazz Band will kick off our 2016 Halloween Party at the Lodge. This

year the event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC with all the funds going to a Charity to be

named in October. Pizazz sizzles with the energy that pounds your heart and gets your

body and feet moving with Soul, Funk, Beach, Country and Rock. Advanced tickets will

be $15, $18 at the door. This will be a Smoking event. No outside food or drinks permit-

ted.

MOOSE LODGE!!!

Entertainment News We hope everyone has enjoyed their summer vacations and time with the kids and

family. We have just a little more summer to go and then schools will be back in ses-

sion and it will be time to put away those swim suits and flip flops. Our attention will turn

to our fall activities and getting ready for the cooler months to come. The 2016-2017

entertainment season here at the Moose Lodge is just heating up. We have plenty of

activities going on here at the Moose. Bingo is held eve-

ry Sunday and Tuesday nights. On Mondays, don’t forget the Queen of Hearts draw-

ing. The jackpot is growing and you may as well be the win-

ner! Wednesday and Friday nights we offer fine meals and DJ entertainment for your

dancing and listening pleasure. The second and fourth Thursday nights we have Trivia

Night in the Social Quarters to test your knowledge as well as entertain and compete

against your friends for prizes. There is never a cover charge for any of our Social

Quarters Events!

We also have Ballroom events planned for the upcoming months. Advanced tickets

are available for ballroom events by calling the office and you can reserve your favorite

seats at no additional cost. The ballroom seating chart is on our web-

site www.hopewellmooselodge.com, on the entertainment page. Everyone come out for

lots of summer fun, great food, dancing and listening pleasure with all your best friends.

District 8 New Elected

Officers If you missed the elections at the Dis-trict 8, you may not know that the Hopewell Moose Lodge has one of it’s own at District President. Our very own Darrell John-son was elected President for the 2016/17 year. Dar-rell is currently the Lodge Prelate, Moose Charities Chairman and serves on the Lodge Moose Le-gion Committee. Darrell is now re-sponsible for Din-widdie, Colonial Heights, South Hill, Chesterfield and Hopewell Moose Lodges. Congratu-lation Darrell and we look for big thing from you in the next year. At that same election, Jim Akridge was elected Treasurer and Jack Olinger as Prelate. Congratu-lation to a strong team. We know you will bring the Dis-trict to new heights in Fraternalism.

SENIOR FISHING TRIP

This time the Lodge chartered the entire boat as a “Private” charter for

Moose Members Only. The “OCEAN EAGLE”. leaves at 12:30 and returns

at 5:30. A Senior is any member 62 and older. Non-

seniors will pay $40 per person for the trip. The date is the 7th of Sep-

tember. Lunch, drinks and Moose Milk is served on the boat courtesy

of the Hopewell Moose Lodge 1472. You may bring your favorite rod

if you like or the boat will furnish rods, reels and bait. Bring a cooler

Brothers, Let me begin my last letter to you as Presi-dent thanking you all for allowing me to serve this Association as President. Also I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the Executive Board members, District Presi-dents, Committee Chairpersons, Appointed Officers and all the wonderful Lodges that step up this year and made it possible to be named the Honorary Top Association for 2015-2016. Without all your due diligence, support, and help this would not have been possible. Less I forget the WOTM mem-bers who contributed so much to our Lodge's success. A special thanks to our behind the scenes secret, Paula Green for her in-valuable assistance not only to myself but to this entire associa-tion. Also I would be remiss if I did not mention the assistance and advice I received all year long from our Territory Managers. Let me mention two of these men were named by Interna-tional as Top Territory Manag-ers. Rodger Huffman and Mike Rios received this honor for all their dedication and hard work. This does not take away from our other Territory Manager Mike Stumbaugh who remained vigilant and dedicated to our success. A big thank you to my traveling partner for all her help and sup-port, my wife Brenda. Also I want to thank my children and grandchildren who loved me enough to allow me to do what I enjoy so much. In closing what I discovered to be so amazing were the many kindnesses, new friendships, mutual understanding, and great members we have across this state and yes Virginia there is a Piney River!!!! 2016 YOUTH AWARENESS STUDENT CONGRESS SCHEDULE Are you familiar with the Moose Youth Awareness Program? This program started

in 1986 as the "Just Say No to Drugs" program and has been adapting to the ever

changing needs of the community ever since. With each year comes different chal-

lenges, this year is no different. So we ask all members of the Moose to come help

nurture and mold the minds of the future. Below is a set schedule of events for this

year's 2016 Youth Awareness Student Congress schedule. We hope you can all

gram!

The one-day Student Congresses at the Association level challenge the participat-

ing students to become a speakers' bureau and to encourage each of them to pre-

sent a minimum of three Moose "KidsTalks" presentations to the target group in

their own community. The students' presentations are not scripted, as they are to

prepare their own message to deliver to the 4 - 9 year-olds, encouraging them to

make wise and healthy choices in life.

Moose "KidsTalks" presentations run from November through February each year.

After each "KidsTalks" presentation, the students are required to submit a written

report telling us about their presentations. In March, students who attended the As-

sociation Student Congresses and completed a minimum of three "KidsTalks"

presentations are judged by their peers, and one or more from each Moose Associ-

ation are invited to attend the International Student Congress.

"Volunteer Recognition & Rewards Program"

•Volunteer• - a person who performs tasks without monetary com-pensation. •Recognition• - the acknowledgement of something for considera-tion. Something having been previously seen, heard or known. •Rewards• - something given in recognition of one's service, effort or achievement. Who doesn't like to be thanked for a job well done, or simply a pat on the back for efforts? Many times in volunteer based organizations, this gets overlooked. Why? Because unlike a traditional supervisor to employee workplace, the organization is made up of peer volunteers, most of whom are also volunteering countless hours. We make every effort to thank those individuals who give up their own time to help with projects, events, fundraisers and other tasks, but many times, that type of "peer-to-peer" recognition falls flat, and leaves us wanting more. Why? Well, it's primarily due to our time spent in a traditional workplace environment, versus a non-profit or volunteer based workplace/organization. Last year, we developed the template for our "Volunteer Recognition & Rewards Program". We were/are looking for both male and female lodge members to com-plete this committee and oversee the new initiative program. We have published the article several times in the newsletter over the past 9 months. Currently, there are 3 members that make up the Volunteer program, two males and one female. Each month we rotate between the males & female volunteers and choose who will be showcased for that month. The volunteers are given a point value system based on activities involved in & volunteered for, the amount of activities/time that is "donated", and the overall helpful words & kind attitudes demonstrated. To date, not one single person has expressed interest in serving on the committee, nor submitted ideas to the committee. Not one single person. We have the guidelines in place, we have started the program, we have the "volunteer of the month" parking space, and other rewards. What we don't have....is you. We need at least 3-4 other members to step up and serve on this program. Bring your ideas! Bring your suggestions! This isn't a time consuming commitment. Most of this can be done via email or phone. We commonly hear, "I don't want to help or give up my time because no one ever thanks me." But when asked just WHO or WHERE the Thank-You's are to come from, the answer we get is "from the lodge." But the lodge....is in actuality, all of us. WE all make up the lodge in its entirety. We all like to be thanked & recognized, it's human nature. Please consider participating in your lodge's "Recognition & Rewards Program." You, your friends, and your moose brothers & sisters deserve it. ~D.M. Ozmore
