Dear&Friends,&By! early! 2016,! ten! years! after! our! founders! first! conceived! of! the! Hope! for! West! Africa!

Foundation! (HFWA),!we!will!grant! our!oneBmillionth!dollar! in!programmatic! support! to! our!

West!African!NGO!(NonBGovernment!Organizations)!partners.!As!we!approach!this!milestone,!

we! celebrate! the! growth! and! the! success! of! the! essential! humanitarian! programs! our!West!

African! partners! administer.! The! Faith! Alive! Foundation! in! Jos,! Nigeria,! and! Anawim! Home!

(the! Missionary! Sisters! of! the! Poorest! of! the! Poor)! in! Nigeria! and! Ghana,! our! two! main!

partners,! epitomize! the! ‘Hope’! that! our!name! suggests.! These! two!organizations! each!began!

over! 15! years! ago! with! little! more! than! prayer! and! passion,! but! over! the! years! they! have!

provided! necessary!medical! and! social! services! to! over! one! hundred! thousand! of! the!most!

vulnerable! individuals! in! Nigeria! and! Ghana.! You! will! find! a! short! bio! of! each! of! these!

organizations!on!pages!four!and!six.!

This!Annual!Report! covers!2014!and!2015.!Over! these!past! two!years,!HFWA!has!pursued!a!

distinct! theme! of! partner! NGO! program! development! and! sustainability.! When! we! receive!

requests!from!our!partners,!or!assist!them!in!proposal!development,!the!first!question!we!ask!

is,! “will!this!project!help!the! long!term!success!of!the!organization!and!the!people! it!serves?”!

We!believe!in!our!partners!and!trust!their!knowledge!of!their!own!priorities!for!success!within!

their!local!climate.!This!ensures!that!the!support!we!provide!B!whether!it!is!access!to!sanitation!

and! water,! or! salaried! positions! for! hospital! physicians! B! addresses! the! highest! needs! and!

creates! the! greatest! impact.! We! also! however,! understand! that! necessary! humanitarian!

support! is! far! from! predictable.! Occasionally,! an! emergency! arises.! Whether! an! influx! of!

displaced!people!following!Boko!Haram!violence! in!the!North,!or!a!crumbled!compound!wall!

compromising!the!safety!of!the!mentally!ill,!HFWA!is!also!prepared!to!step!in.!!

Our!support!activities!are!largely!reflected!in!our!grantmaking,!an!overview!of!which!is!found!

on!pages!five!and!seven.!What!are!not!reflected!however,!are!the!hundreds!of!working!hours!

that! HFWA! board!members! have! donated! to! develop! administrative,! program!management!

and!grant!writing!support!for!our!partners.!

The! Hope! for! West! Africa! Foundation! is! run! by! five! volunteer! board! members.! Melinda!

Capone,!Hilary!Ferro,!Christy!Johnson!and!Andy!York!all!work!hard!to!ensure!that!our!partners!

come!first!and!that!every!dollar!we!spend! is!used!as!efficiently!and!effectively!as!possible! in!

Partner'Overview:'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''Faith'Alive'Foundation'Hospital'

The Faith Alive Foundation began directly outside of a Jos, Nigeria marketplace in 1996 when Dr. Chris Isichei, sat behind a table and began offering free medical advice each day after work.

Faith Alive has since become a full-scale institution that offers free medical services ranging from HIV testing to surgical oncology. Its three-story hospital boasts six satellite locations, serves tens of thousands of patients and employs almost 150 full and part-time staff. In addition to medical care, the Faith Alive Foundation supports vocational training for adults in need of marketable skills, kids clubs and free education for children, and a transitional home and food/clothing bank for those most in need.

'Founded!by!Sister!Oresoa!SeloBOjeme,!the!Anawim!Home!offers!shelter!and!opportunities!for!those!most!in!need.!With!residences!and!social!programs!in!Abuja!and!Kaduna!in!Nigeria,!and!

Yendi! in! Ghana,! Sister! Oresoa! and! her! order! of! nuns,! the!

Missionary!Sisters!of!the!Poorest!of!the!Poor,!currently!house!

74! orphaned! children,! 26! mentally! and! physically! disabled!

and! 9! pregnant! young! girls! and! young! mothers.! They!

additionally! provide! education! and! youth! programming! to!

In! the! summer! of! 2015,! thirtyBsix! women! in! Gwagwalada,!

Nigeria! received! interestBfree! loans! of! $150,! $200,! or! $250!

from! Anawim! Home.! For! many,! this! was! their! first! ever!

opportunity! to! take! control! of! their! lives! and! to! improve!

future!prospects!for!their!children.!!

The! women! received! loans! within! one! of! four! selfBselected!

borrowing! groups.! At! monthly! borrowing! group! meetings,!

they! review! the! challenges! and! triumphs! of! their! small!

businesses,! providing! suggestions! and! support,! while!

Anawim! staff! discusses!with! them! the! importance! of! saving!

for!the!future.!!

The! women! are! expected! to! finish! repaying! their! loans! to!

Anawim! by! August! of! 2016! and! all! funds! repaid! will! be!

recycled!to!the!next!group!of!Anawim!microloan!recipients!in!

Autumn!2016.!

The! Hope! for!West! Africa! Foundation! provided! all! funds! for! the!microloans.! HFWA!Board!

President,! Sara! Kennedy! provided! all! training! in! loan! distribution,! savings! and! projectB

With! a! single! building,! the! Faith! Alive!

Foundation! can! implement! two! of! the! most!

important! public! health! interventions!

necessary!in!rural!Nigeria.!!In!August!of!2015,!

the! Faith! Alive! Foundation! completed! the!

construction!of! toilets!and!a!clinical! center! in!

two! village! locations:! Anadaha,! in!Nassarawa!

State,!and!Fobur,!in!Plateau!State.!Constructed!

with! the!support! of!HFWA!and! the!Church!of!

the! Nativity! in! Timonium,! Maryland,! each!

facility!contains!three!toilets!and!a!community!

medical! center! that! provides! a! number! of!

services,!including!HIV!testing!and!counseling.!

The! removal! of! waste! from! a! community’s!

living!environment!through!proper!sanitation!

facilities! is! critical! to! reducing! the! spread! of!

preventable,! yet! deadly,! disease.! Prior! to! the!

installation! of! these! toilets,! the! communities!

had!no!choice!but!open!defecation!in!the!land!

and!water!surrounding!their!villages,!bringing!

the!danger!of! illness! to! themselves,!and! their!

children.! Access! to,! and! education! about,!

sanitary! facilities! is! significantly! decreasing!

the!incidence!of!illness!in!these!communities.!

The! inclusion! of! HIV! counseling! and! testing!

capabilities! are! additionally! critical! in! these!!!

two! states,! where! the! HIV! prevalence! rates!

are!over!8%.!The!clinical!facilities!allow!Faith!

Alive!staff!not!only!to!counsel!HIV!prevention,!

but! also! detect! the! virus! early! and! quickly!

bring!villagers!into!treatment.!

The! facilities! in! both! communities! are! built!

next!to!borehole,!constructed!in!2013!with!the!

support!of!HFWA!and! the!Church!of!Nativity,!

which! provide! free! clean! water! for! the!

communities.!
