As we welcome the spring season, yourFoundation is gearing up for many excitingevents to benefit High Point Regional HealthSystem. Most exciting this year will be a newoccasion: our first “Sun & Stars SignatureEvent” which will take place on Monday,September 26. This is a date you will want tosave on your calendar right now because weare planning a day and night that we promiseyou will not want to miss! More details willfollow, but we can tell you now that we willconclude the day with a fantastic receptionfeaturing an intimate concert at the High PointCountry Club with five time Grammy winnerChristopher Cross! As always, and most

importantly, the funds raised by the “Signature” event will benefit ourhealth system; in this case the Heart and Cancer Programs!

While we work hard to present you with engaging activities and funevents, we hope you remember that community support for ourhospital is really the point of it all. Our goal is always to help ensurethat our healthcare professionals have the most advanced medicalequipment and services available to best meet the needs of thepatients, families and neighbors we serve at High Point Regional.

The Foundation strives to grow the list of people who makecommitments to our health system because every dollar counts inhelping to heal and to save lives. Thankfully, these efforts continue topay off. 50High Point RegionalNamed One of the TopCardiovascular Hospitals in the Nation

On November 15, 2010, HPRHS President Jeff Millerlearned High Point Regional Health System had beennamed one of the 50 top cardiovascular hospitals inthe nation for 2011 by Thomson Reuters.

“This recognition is a tremendous milestone for ourheart program,” Miller says. “Thomson Reuters is the industry leader in collecting and assimilatinghealthcare data and monitors vital healthcare trends,such as excellence in cardiovascular care, across theUnited States.

“Recognition by Thomson Reuters carries a great dealof prestige,” Miller explains.

Over 1,000 hospitals in the United States offer thecardiovascular services regularly monitored byThomson Reuters. Out of those hospitals, ThomsonReuters selected the 50 best cardiovascular services.Within those 50 top cardiovascular facilities, just 15 are

community hospitals like High Point Regional, Millerpoints out.

This honor places High Point Regional in the samehierarchy of healthcare providers as premier majormedical centers and teaching hospitals withcardiovascular residency programs throughout thenation.

“This is the biggest and best accomplishment that ourheart program has had,” explains cardiologist Dr. ZanTyson of Carolina Cardiology Cornerstone. “It’s a validaccomplishment in that all of the hospitals monitoredare based on the same statistics. This is not an awardor a designation that you can seek or apply for.”

The “Top 50” designation is based on three years ofdata about each hospital’s success in targeted areas.

In determining this honor, Thomson Reuters analyzed

data from 1,022 hospitals. They looked at outcomesfor heart failure patients, myocardial infarction (heartattack) patients, patients who underwent cardiac arterybypass graft (CABG)surgery and thoseundergoingpercutaneouscoronary interventionssuch as angioplasty, stent placement and atherectomy.

The hospitals that made it to the top tier were theones whose patients have higher survival rates,shorter hospital stays, fewer readmissions, fewercomplications and lower costs of care.

“These are the very same goals we have alwaysmaintained for heart care at High Point Regional,” Miller says.

When High Point Regional’s leaders began plans toexpand the hospital’s cardiology services to includecardiovascular surgery and a comprehensive heartcenter well over 20 years ago, they pursued this visionwith one goal: Excellence.

In January 1991 High Point Regional performed its firstopen heart surgery, and today the hospital performsapproximately 240 such surgeries annually. In 2001,High Point Regional opened Carolina Regional HeartCenter, a facility that houses the offices of allcardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, state-of-

the-art cardiovascular technology and research,invasive, non-invasive and interventional procedures,as well as cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation.

“Dr. Cheek and Ihave both been partof this program sincethe very beginning,”

says Dr. Tyson who specializes in heart rhythmdisorders. He is the director of Carolina CardiologyCornerstone’s Electrophysiology (EP) Program anddirector for High Point Regional's OutpatientCatheterization and EP laboratories.

“From the very beginning, our plans were to build oneof the best programs in the country,” Miller explains.“Our region reached out to raise the funds necessaryto build – and continue to operate – this center. Thecampaign raised a total of nearly $13 million dollarswhich funded several projects. Contributions from Fred& Barbara Wilson helped fund our Cath Lab and therenovation of our critical care unit was funded by Jackand Marsha Slane.”

“And thanks to the dedication of our cardiologists,cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses and countlesssupport staff, we have been able to make that vision a reality.”

This elite group of winners has raised the bar significantly, delivering higher survival rates, shorter hospitalstays, fewer readmissions and lower costs - which add up to enormous value for the communities theyserve. As a result, everyone benefits: patients, families, employers, insurers and the hospital itself.

Comparing the award winners to similar high-volume non-award winning hospitals, we found that if allcardiovascular providers performed at the level of this year's winners:

• More than 7,500 additional lives could be saved.• Nearly 12,000 additional patients could be complication-free.• Approximately $910 million could be saved.

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, Mud Duck Barbell proudlypresented the CancerFITT Pullfest. Powerlifters spent theday raising funds to benefit the Laura Morrow CancerFITTScholarship Fund. CancerFITT is a special exercise program designed for cancer patients.

Liberty Steakhouse and Brewery held a Pints For ProstatesEvent and donated over $600 in support of Prostate Support groups at High Point Regional Health System.

Dennis Lemons of Barberitos Southwest Grille & Cantinapresents a check to Janet Forrest of HPRHS. Each yearBarberitos selects a special day and donates 10% of theirincome to benefit the HPRHS cancer program and to raiseawareness of breast cancer.

Steve Golinski participated in Battle of the Triad Bi-athalonon October 24. Steve donated his second place $100 win-nings to benefit the Heart Strides program at HPRHS!

High Point University Female Athletes did their part to help save lives by donating proceeds from their special t-shirt salesto the Pink Ribbon cancer campaign efforts at High Point Regional.


“I heard a patient from Lexington say that this is theplace to come for heart surgery,” says cardiovascularsurgeon Dr. Stephen Mills of Triad Cardiac & ThoracicSurgery of High Point.

Dr. Mills, who was one of the first two cardiothoracic(CT) surgeons in High Point Regional’s open heart

surgery program and who has been with the programsince its inception, takes immense satisfaction in theThomson Reuters designation, yet he never losessight of the focus of Carolina Regional Heart Center– the patients.

“It’s been very gratifying to watch this program growfrom the ground up and to know that patients now viewus as their first choice for care,” Mills says.

“Our statistics are very impressive, and that’s a resultof communication and collaboration between the CTsurgeons, the cardiologists and the nursing staff. Rightnow our hospital stay for cardiothoracic surgery is threedays. This is what patients can expect when they comehere,” Mills explains.

“The good outcomes of patient care are a reflection ofthe culture and the teamwork here. We’ve always hadhigh expectations and attention to detail,” Millsexplains.

Keys to the success of High Point Regional’s heartprogram are fairly simple, in theory that is.

“All 20 cardiologists on staff are members of thesame medical group. Consequently, they all followthe same patient care protocols and maintain opencommunication,” points out cardiologist Dr. Barry

Cheek of Carolina Cardiology Cornerstone. Dr.Cheek serves as director of the InpatientCatheterization Laboratory at High Point RegionalHospital and serves with Dr. Tyson on the board ofdirectors for Carolina Regional Heart Center.

“There is a lot of interaction between us,” explains Dr.Cheek, who along with Dr. Tysonand Dr. Mills has beeninstrumental in Carolina RegionalHeart Center’s vision andsuccess.

“There’s a comfort level here thatyou don’t see at other hospitals,”Dr. Mills says. “We understand

how the other thinks. We understand the direction wewill each take with a patient. There’s a tremendousability of the nurses to know what to expect for ourpatients’ care too.”

Plus, the entire team feels rooted in this community –a community that put its faith and its financial supportbehind a vision to provide excellent heart care.

“We’ve been the recipients of a generous community,”Mills says. “This community has made certain that wehad the best facilities in which to provide care.

The Millis family in particular has continued toprovide ongoing support over the years and mostrecently established the Millis Heart Fund at HighPoint Regional.

“We wanted to provide a way to recognize theincredible work and achievements of ourcardiovascular team at High Point Regional” saysMolly Millis Hedgecock. “Our hope was that ourcontributions would encourage others to helpensure this outstanding level of healthcare ismaintained and available to all in our communitynow and into the future.”

High Point Regional Health Systemreceived a $380,000 grant, which willbe used in collaboration with theMental Health Association in HighPoint to establish an outpatienttreatment service for needy adultswho suffer from severe andpersistent mental illness. The grant isfrom The Duke Endowment.

“I am thrilled about this grant and thesupport it will enable the communityto provide to patients coming out ofour hospital, said Kitty Stafford,Behavioral Health clinical director atHigh Point Regional. For the past fiveyears, there has been a tremendousgap in outpatient therapy servicesavailable in our community. Thisgrant will provide patients with anopportunity to receive ongoing,outpatient therapy and hopefullyprevent re-hospitalization.”

Thanks to the grant, between 450and 500 patients annually will receivecare who would otherwise have noaccess to outpatient treatment.Mental illness statistics are bothalarming and growing. In fact, more

than 27,000 residents in GuilfordCounty suffer from mental illness andwith N.C. Mental Health Reform,these numbers are increasing.

"With the increase in psychiatricpatients seen in the Emergency

Department, the problem of where to seek outpatient services hasplaced a huge strain on the system,said Meg Cashion, EmergencyDepartment manager at High PointRegional. As a result, there is a lackof available resources to serveindigent patients who are dischargedfrom hospitals with no plan fornecessary individual therapy.

“We are extremely fortunate to havebeen the recipient of this grant. Thiswill assist us in providing the follow-up care that is seriously needed."

“This grant will support High Point Regional and the Mental Health Association in providingoutpatient services in conjunctionwith medication management forincreased positive outcomes.

High Point Regional will develop the patient’s aftercare plan andfacilitates a timely referral to theMental Health Association. TheMental Health Association will makepersonal contact with the patient to increase the likelihood of follow-through with aftercare/dischargeplanning for outpatient services andmedication management.

The Duke Endowment, located in Charlotte, N.C.,seeks to fulfill the legacy of James B. Duke by improvinglives and communities in the Carolinas through highereducation, health care, rural churches and children’sservices. Since its inception, the Endowment hasawarded nearly $2.7 billion in grants.

DOCTORS MAKING HOUSE CALLSINTRODUCING “RAPID ROUNDS”Familiar with the concept of hospital rounds? If so, Denise Potter, VicePresident of the Foundation, has introduced "Rapid Rounds" which takes"medical rounding" to an entirely new level. To date, six receptions have beenheld in homes of friends of the hospital throughout the community since lastyear. The receptions which typically have 50 in attendance, each featuresphysicians and nursing professionals who provide information on the latestadvances regarding patient care programs, technology and services on avariety of specialized areas. Rapid Rounds provides an opportunity for gueststo be "up close and personal" with physicians in a non-medical casual setting."It's a great way to become more informed about all of the excitingdevelopments and exceptional healthcare offerings available at High PointRegional" says Potter. "We have received such a positive response fromthese events that we will continue to offer them in the future."

Michael Williford, son of Tim Williford and Dr. Susan Williford, an oncologist with Emerywood Oncology, is a first-year medical studentat Wake Forest School of Medicine and has already mastered the artof giving!

After winning $25,000.00 from American Eagle for co-creating theMedAssist program while a high school student and volunteer at HighPoint Regional’s Cancer Center, he felt compelled to make two generous gifts to help cancer patients here. First he made a donationto the LoveLine Cancer Support program which provides assistance to patients and their families with expenses associated with their cancer care.

Michael’s second gift was the gift of music. He very generously donated a Yamaha Clavinova electronic piano which can be programmed to provide music all day. Hearing soothing music uponentering the Cancer Center has provided a warm welcome for our patients and visitors!
