MISSION

Provide services responsive to individual needs.

VISION

A quality life for all in our community.

Dear Friends,

As we mark our 61st year of service to communities across Southern Indiana, we are proud of our “solid foundation” of success in meeting the wide range of needs for the 16,000 individuals and families we serve.

Donations large and small help us meet those needs and help advance our vision of “a quality life for all in our community.” Every donor becomes a valued partner in our work, and we thank each one for their dedication and support.

We are pleased to share with you our 2019 annual report, with photos and stories we hope you will read and enjoy.

It has been another year of steady growth, with Housing & Community Development leading the way as the need for affordable housing for seniors and families increases across the state.

Employment Services, which pairs individuals with disabilities with local businesses, also expanded into 3 more counties in Indiana; and 7 counties in Kentucky were approved for services, our first venture across the river.

You’ll also see that we’ve launched our Campaign for HOPE, with a goal of $275,000 to renovate designated facilities.

We recognize our 180 employees who do an outstanding job every day; and we say an enormous “THANK YOU!” to them and to our valued donors and partners. We appreciate each one of you.

Sincerely,

Pat Daily Chair

James A. Bosley Chief Executive Officer

473 People Served in 2019

Whether it’s helping a family with an adult or child, or teaching people with disabilities life skills and job training, New Hope Services is here to empower and support individuals in our community. Through nine different programs, we provide professional assistance to those who need help increasing vocational and employment skills, daily living skills, self-care, and community integration.

• Skills Training

• Employment Services

• Supported Living

• Vocational Training/Work Services

• Respite, Attendant Care, Homemakers Programs

5 • New Hope Services

This program enables adults with intellectual disabilities to live in their homes and be as independent as possible. They may be living alone, with family, or with up to three roommates.

Our services are primarily provided in the home, but individuals also enjoy getting out in the community. They may require assistance only a few hours a week or as much as 24 hours a day.

Many come to the New Hope Center on weekdays for job and skills training and to earn a paycheck in Work Services. Robbie Daniel, for instance, lives with his sister Jean McCartin and her husband; Jean is a New Hope direct support professional for the program. The same goes for Amber and Matthew Caswell and their mother, Melissa Caswell (top center).

New Hope also has a Supported Living community at Park Place that serves five men and four women in separate apartments. Their disabilities vary from mild to severe but still enable them to live on their own with 24-hour support. They cook and clean, set the table and help with dinner, and make their own lunches. They pay rent, do laundry, and once a week do their own grocery shopping. Most work part-time at New Hope in Work Services.

All this is possible through the help of the dedicated Supported Living staff, which includes a staff nurse who monitors their health and dispenses medications.

FAMILY SERVICES

15,187 Children & Families Served in 2019

New Hope Services supports families in need in the Southern Indiana area with a wide range of programs that offer food and nutrition counseling, parenting support, family planning services and more. From budgeting to handling the stress of parenting, our staff is fully trained to support parents in any circumstance. We can even provide guidance and counseling on raising a healthy child. All of these services are designed to work in collaboration toward the ultimate goal of strengthening families.

Family Services Programs:• Family Support Services

• Healthy Families

• WIC (Women, Infants and Children)

• HopeCare Clinic - Family Planning

Healthy Families ProgramHealthy Families is a voluntary and confidential home-based service to support new and expectant parents. Because babies begin learning at birth, Healthy Families believes parents are their child’s first and best teacher. Parenting is a very demanding job and all parents have worries, questions and stress.

Healthy Families provides parents with information about:

• Services available in the community

• Health, safety and care of newborns

• Access to the latest information on brain development

Families receive regular visits from a trained family support specialist who can provide support, developmental assessments for their child, and an opportunity to set and accomplish family goals.

6 • New Hope Services

MISSION

To promote and strengthen families with respect and compassion through

prevention, education and support.

Page 7: SOLID FOUNDATION - New Hope Services

Cassandra and Dustin Obermark have been participating in our Healthy Families program since May 2019.

Now, married five years with two young daughters, the New Albany couple puts in the work to keep their family strong and full of love. “Communication is pretty big in our relationship,” Dustin said.

Despite love within the family and her husband’s support, Cassandra still found herself experiencing post-partum depression after their first child, Natalya, was born. That’s why after the couple’s second child, Nora, was born in July, Cassandra took the opportunity to get hooked up with New Hope Services, which she said has helped immensely with depression and anxiety.

“It’s helped with everything,” Cassandra said. “And honestly it’s made me be a better person in a way.”

Working through things with her caseworker, Kristin Johnson, was a godsend, she said. “I’d be in a totally different place now if it wasn’t for her,” Cassandra said, adding that Kristin has also helped with things like rides while the family tries to get their car fixed.

“She’s like a part of the family. I can text her if I need someone to talk to...it’s helped out a lot.”While the family has their ups and downs, they work to get stronger — to get ahead of their bills, to make enough money to move out of the small place they currently live in with two growing children. At the end of the day, they have each other.

Update: Cassandra is now working full-time; Dustin is still a stay-at-home dad with both girls, which helps cut the cost of childcare. They are paying bills on time and their car is now fixed. Cassandra has truly blossomed into the woman that she said she strived to be!

Campaign for HOPEOur three facilities in Jeffersonville carry the load of activity:

New Hope Center - Ability Services and Corporate Offices

New Hope Commons - Family Services

Park Place - Supported Living Community

The buildings have been well maintained, but each has a list of repairs and replacements - some major, some minor - that have finally become urgent, and it’s time to address them.

New Hope Center725 Wall Street Renovations Needed: $101,650

Formerly the Indiana University Southeast library, the building was purchased in 1973 and has been renovated several times over the years.

Our corporate offices and Ability Services are headquartered here, including Employment Services, Supported Living, ACES, a day program for adults with developmental disabilities, and New Hope Industries, which offers Job and Skills Training to increase independence and also prepare individuals for full or part-time jobs here or out in the community.

New Hope Commons1302 Wall Street

Renovations Needed: $130,00

Not far from New Hope Center, our Family Services programs are located here, which include WIC (Women, Infants and Children), Healthy Families, Family Support Services, and the HopeCare Clinic. These are our largest programs, serving nearly 15,000 individuals and families last year in multiple counties.

Park Place1499 Utica Pike

Renovations Needed: $44,000

Supported Living serves adults with intellectual disabilities in their home living environment to assist them to maintain their community home and live as independently as possible. The property was purchased in 2006 and was renovated at that time. It needs refurbishing inside and a generator installed for increased safety of the residents.
