Hooper Highlights Michael Citta, Principal
Mallory Kennedy, Supervisor
April-May, 2012
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of you,
our students and staff, for all of your efforts in
preparing for the recent NJASK! I am confident
that our students, once again, did an outstanding
job.
Our spring concert and kindergarten shows were
very entertaining and we are very proud of the
children. At the end of the month the first grade
will be performing their patriotic show for their
families and our production of “Dream” will be
performed by some of our students at 6:30 PM on
Thursday, May 31st.
As we get closer to the end of the year Hooper
Avenue has a lot of great activities planned for
everyone. I hope to see everyone at the Fun
Festival on May 12th, 11AM – 3PM, in our back yard.
Have a great day!
Fondly,
Mr. Michael Citta, Principal

Spring Musical Concert
The Concert Band, String Ensemble, Fourth
Grade Chorus, and Fifth Grade Chorus gave their
annual Spring Concert performance on Thursday,
April 26, 2012. Student musicians performed a
variety of musical styles, including music from
Stephen Foster, music from the Beatles, and
music from current movies, as well as other
popular and classical pieces. The concert was
videotaped and will be shown on Channel 21
(Comcast) and channel 26 (Verizon).
Fifth graders Kayla Moore, Devin Pullham, and
Julia Tozer have all recently become
volunteers at Cattus Island County Park in Toms
River. As volunteers, these students use their
free time to help Cattus Island workers feed the
animals, clean tanks and cages, and gain service
experience by walking the grounds and providing
assistance to anyone who comes to the Visitor's
Center. Feel free to drop by and visit them at the
park!
Hooper Huskies Perform Community Service
Mrs. Ferry's second graders have just finished
their reading unit on animals. To show the skills
they've learned, each student chose an animal and
made a shoebox habitat. The projects were very
informational and looked great!
Second Graders Re-Create Habitats
American Heart Association‟s 5th grade Hoops for
Heart and 4th grade Jump for Heart was a HUGE
success! Hooper Avenue Elementary School raised
a total of $7,500 with only two grade levels!
Hoops for Heart is a special basketball event for
one day involving all fifth grade students. It
consists of basketball skill games and a hot shot
blitz shootout. Jump for Heart is a whole-class
jump roping contest for fourth graders. Both
activities reinforce students‟ pledge to keep a
healthy heart while having fun. With all the
pledges students raised and the hard work and
exercise, Hooper Avenue Elementary School is on
a mission to change heart disease as the #1 cause
of death by helping find solutions and spread the
word on how to live a healthy and happy life. We
thank everyone for participating and encourage
you to spread the word to eat healthy and
exercise daily to prevent Heart Disease.
Fourth and Fifth Graders Have Fun Fundraising for the American Heart
Association!
Fourth graders “Jump Rope for Heart”.
Change is all around us. Mrs. Petrillo would like
to remind parents to keep their children‟s
contact information updated. In that way she
will be easily able to contact you if the need
arises.
Thank you!

March Was Youth Art Month
On March 28th, the first grades had their
grandparents and special relatives in. The
children were able to hear their relatives share
special memories and pictures. They also shared
a poem and snack. It was a great day that
everyone enjoyed!
First Graders Celebrate
Grandparents’ Day!
¡Exposición de Moda!
Señorita Morales hosted an “Exposición de Moda”
in her classroom and Mr. Bender‟s 5th grade
students were the models! The students were
transformed into runway models after weeks of
learning about clothing during Spanish class. Each
student dressed up in their most interesting
outfit and walked the red carpet for their
classmates. They described their outfits using
Spanish words they learned and posed for the
paparazzi! After the show, prizes were awarded
for the Best Dressed students and Most Creative
outfit. Everyone had a great time at the Fashion
Show!
Mrs. Smith's second grade class has
begun a reading-for-fun program based
on the King Arthur legends of Camelot. Everyone
has to read as many books as they can by May
16th to work their way up from a "page" to a
"Knight of the Reading Table". The more books
we read, the more prizes we get! On May 18th we
get crowned and enjoy a raffle and feast with our
parents. Wish us luck in our reading adventure!!
WELCOME TO READALOT!!

Hooper Beach Sweep 2012
On Friday, April 27th, Hooper staff, students, and parents gave generously of their time to perform a
worthwhile community service project. Volunteers spent two hours cleaning a section of Ortley Beach,
readying it for summer beach-goers. Hooper Huskies had fun while showing their appreciation for our
natural resources. We love Ocean County!
