Making a model cell

Task: Imagine the Science Museum has asked you to make a model cell for a display.

• Make a model of one of the following cells: sperm, ciliated epithelial cells, muscle cell, nerve

cell, palisade cell or root hair cell.

• Make an information card, perhaps using a key, to describe what a cell is and what

each part of the cell is used for.

Your information sheet should contain:

• Labels of all the important parts of a cell (Use the key words below).

• A comparison of the structure in plant and animal cells

• A diagram of your own specialised cell!!

Key words:

cell, cell membrane, cell wall, mitochondria, ribosomes, chloroplast, cytoplasm, nucleus,

vacuole, photosynthesis, cell sap, respiration, specialised, protein synthesis, chlorophyll,

magnification, microscope.

I am able to…..Peer

assessment

Create your own specialised cell for a newly discovered organism. Design its structure and link the adaptations to the function of the cell.

Explain how mitochondria and ribosomes work together to produce substances Link the adaptations of a specialised cell to their function Explain the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells Calculate the magnification of the model compared to its actual size

Explain the function of chlorophyll and chloroplast in producing glucose for the plant Compare the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells Explain the adaptation of a specialised cell

Identify more complex organelles (mitochondria and ribosomes) Give an example of a specialised plant or animal cell Describe the role of a specialised cell

Label or list parts of the cell that are only found in plant cells Describe the functions (jobs) of the parts of the cell Outline how you can observe cells

State what a cell is State whether your cell is a plant or animal cell Label the nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane

I am able to: Peerassessment

Describe and explain all stages in detail including being able to: Compare male and female gametes in terms of size, number and mobility Explain fertilisation in terms of the combining of DNA Explain why there is not transfer of blood between mother and foetus

Explain the process of fertilisation in terms of the fusing of nuclei Sequence the stages of the development of the foetus including the terms zygote

and embryo Explain in terms of diffusion the role of the placenta and umbilical cord in relation

to the exchange of nutrients, waste and gases.

Link all the structures in the male and female reproductive system to their functions

Link the structure and location of ciliated cells to their role Describe and explain lifestyle factors that can affect a developing foetus

Describe in simple terms how sperm and egg cell adaptations aid their role in fertilisation

Describe where key events happen in the reproductive system e.g. fertilisation, implantation

Describe what happens during fertilisation Describe the function of the placenta and umbilical cord

Label all the parts of the female and male reproductive system Describe the roles of the sperm and egg cell Give simple definitions for; fertilisation, implantation, gestation Identify the functions of the amniotic sac and fluid

State where sperm and egg cells are made Label some parts of the human male and female reproductive system including

those of a developing foetus State where the foetus develops Recall the length of gestation in humans

Race to Make a Baby

Describe and explain what happens when a sperm and egg meet to make a baby.

You can do this by writing a short story or a cartoon strip.

These are the five headings you must include:

•The sperm race begins.

•Meeting the egg.

•The journey to the womb.

•Growing in the womb.

•Time to be born.

For each heading, make sure you clearly show where it takes place and what the main events are that happen. Use as many scientific words as you can to explain what happens.

Key words:birth, egg, ejaculation, embryo, fallopian tube, fertilisation, foetus, implantation, ovary,

penis, placenta, semen, sperm, umbilical cord, uterus, vagina, womb, zygote
