July starts a new fiscal year for the parish and gives us an opportunity to look back over this past year. In this edition of VOICES you will find our financial report for this past year along with articles from the various staff and com- mittee members as they reflect on the year. As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with gratitude to God and to our Holy Name of Jesus parish family. I am richly blessed. I would like to tell you about a few people in the parish and the blessings that they are. This year we had a change in our parish staff. Neal Biggers, our former Mu- sic and Liturgy Director, went part time to explore other possibilities. During this transition we were fortunate to have parishioners step forward and offer their talents. Johnathan Hauke agreed to be available to play the three morning masses on Sunday mornings and at choir practice and Alice Freels began directing the choir. Cantors and musicians joined in and with all this wonderful help, we were able to have music each Sunday, Holy Week and Easter and cover all needed celebrations. It was a wonderful example of the parish coming forward to meet a need. During this interim period we advertised, interviewed and offered the position to Jenny Gorman. Jenny came from Evansville and quickly became a part of our parish community. She continues to get to know our musicians and makes plans for the future. We regretfully said good-bye to Neal who had worked in the parish for several years and wished him all the best on his journey of life. One of our ongoing issues for this past year was the parish budget. We struggled throughout the year to meet budget with our collections and ended the year not making budget. Fortunately, we were able to keep expenses down and we had some money on reserve so that we did not have to borrow or draw from other funds. We face the new year with much the same issue. Even though we were able to keep our budget relatively the same as last year there was only a slight increase, we are still not making the budget. The finance committee and I will be meeting soon to put together a presentation on last years’ finances and our budget for the current year. I do want to thank all those who increased their giving when asked to do so and who continue to make Holy Name of Jesus Parish a priority in their lives. Our School celebrated a wonderful year focused on “Joy” under the leadership of Kamille Stich and Nancy Mills. The year was truly joyful and successful for all involved. Near the end of the school year, we were saddened with the news that Nancy and Kamille would both be leaving the school administra- tion. We celebrate the many gifts that Kamille and Nancy brought to the community of Holy Name and we will miss them in our community and most importantly in our school. Fortunately, we were able to hire a new Principal and President. Scottie Koonce is our principal and Julie Eadens is our president. Scottie comes to us from North Middle School where he taught. Scottie is not a complete stranger to us as his son, Jager, was in preschool this past year and his wife, Lindsey Koonce, has worked as our counselor for the past 2 years. Julie Eadens has been a part of the Holy Name Community for several years. Julie has coordinated the school technology department and is very familiar with the school and the students and I am confident will serve us well. It seems as I reflect back, a theme of the year has been change. Change is never easy, we all like things to stay the same especially when they are going well. But all we have to do is look around and we realize that change is a normal part of life. We have been richly blessed at Holy Name with a rich heritage made up of many stories of change. July starts a new fiscal year for the parish and gives us an opportunity to look back over this past year. In this edition of VOICES you will find our financial report for this past year along with articles from the various staff and com-mittee members as they reflect on the year. As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with gratitude to God and to our Holy Name of Jesus parish family. I am richly blessed. I would like to tell you about a few people in the parish and the blessings that they are.

This year we had a change in our parish staff. Neal Biggers, our former Mu-sic and Liturgy Director, went part time to explore other possibilities.

Near the end of the school year, we were saddened with the news that Nancy and Kamille would both be leaving the school administra-tion. We celebrate the many gifts that Kamille and Nancy brought to the community of Holy Name and we will miss them in our community and most importantly in our school. It seems as I reflect back, a theme of the year has been change. Change is never easy, we all like things to stay the same especially when they are going well.

5 Annual Report to the Parish 2016-2017

Projected Budget 2017-2018

Below, are the cash balances of Holy Name Parish according to funds. This is an explanation of the different funds, how they are used and how they are funded.

The Parish Operating Fund: This account pays for the normal operations of the parish. It pays salaries, benefits, utilities, phone bills, post-

age, and computer services. It pays routine maintenance such as mowing, snow removal, waxing floors, light bulbs, and filters. And then it pays all expenses necessary to operate our many ministries.

This account is funded by collections. Each year a budget is prepared of what we estimate the expenses to be and this is what we will need to

receive in our collections. It is through these collections that we can offer so many ministries.

In the past, there has been years that we were very generous and collections came in over budget. That has allowed us to build a small re-serve. The last two years we have needed to use some of the reserve because collections have been under budget. It is not our wish to use

this reserve nor to continue to build it, only to maintain.

The definition of a healthy parish is one that can maintain itself for 3 months. Based on the 2017-18 parish annual budget, a three month balance would be $387,080.85. Our balance at year end, June 30, 2017, was $176,946.63.

The Parish Plant Fund: This account pays for capital expenditures. Capital expenditures are items for all properties: church, school, St. Mar-garet Chapel, convent. They include building repairs and improvements, land and parking improvements, possible land purchases, large furni-

ture and equipment repairs and purchases. A “plant fund” monthly envelope is provided however these larger items required additional fund-ing. The parish is depended upon receiving estates and memorials for these major expenses. This past year Holy Name was the recipient of

three estates. Due to the generosity of these three, this fund balance was increased to $516,075.88.

The Cemetery Fund: This account pays for all expenses of the St. Louis Cemetery. These expenses would include: lawn maintenance, road improvements, and landscaping, fencing, and computer expenses. The cemetery is self-supporting. The sale of grave spaces has been

enough to maintain the property. This balance for June 30, 2017 was $165,535.89

Food Pantry Fund: Three years ago we received a donation for the restricted use of maintaining our food pantry. It is invested and we with-draw each year the amount that we need to purchase food for our pantry. Our parishioner’s wish is to always have food available for the hun-

gry. This investment’s balance was $148,241.01.

In August of 2016, Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School embarked on its year of joy. Our annual faculty retreat, which initiates each school year, was a day-long retreat to Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It was here that Brother David taught us joy doesn’t show up at the door in a gift-wrapped package. Like all good things, you must work for it and work for it we did. A plaque in our lobby proudly proclaims that “Christ is the reason for this school, the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes, the inspiration for its faculty and the model for its students.” With Christ as our inspira-tion and joy as our goal, we were ready for the year. Throughout the year, members of our Holy Name School Family - faculty, staff, parents, and students - were seen working towards and reaching out to grasp their joy. New committees were formed, new ideas flour-ished, and there was a sense of joyful rebirth and growth.

We celebrated our 145th birthday gala in November with almost 300 guests and the theme, “Celebrating our Past, Securing our Fu-ture.” Former principal and alumnus, Daryl Hagan, spoke to the group about the importance of the school to the vibrancy of the par-ish. He encouraged everyone to remember the HNS Endowment Fund in the planned giving and bereavement gifts. Brad and Ann Boyd were recognized for their 20 years of sponsoring the annual HNS golf outing benefitting the Endowment Fund. Thanks to Valerie and Anne Beckert for preparing an exhibit of newspaper clippings, yearbooks, and spirit wear from past years for all to enjoy. The Men’s Club served a delicious steak dinner to everyone and HNS music educator, Janet Barkley, and both our youngest and oldest alumni, Maggie Hagan and Jean Gastenveld, led the group in singing “Happy Birthday.” Delicious food, great friends, and a worthwhile cause made for an all-around wonderful evening.

As a result of the joyous ideas, Holy Name School underwent many academic improvements. Our library and technical depart-ments were restructured to form one area – the Erminia Evans Me-dia Center. This allowed for the addition of weekly technology clas-ses for grades kindergarten- eighth grades and more hands-on Makerspace-type instruction. Our spiritual formation classes incorpo-rated “Christ in Me” curriculum for all grades in which students learn how to live their faith and put it in action. We believe that formation must begin with our children understanding how to demonstrate their faith and not just know facts about their faith. Students dis-cussed compassion, perseverance, forgiveness, managing conflicts, kindness, and other Christian virtues, all in the context of their own life experiences. In collaboration with Holy Name Church youth min-istry, teachers planned and implemented additional retreats for stu-dents to advance Catholic identity. Academic improvements contin-ued in the 2016-17 year with the addition of the English 9 course offering for Henderson County High School and Owensboro Catholic High School credit along with an optional 7/8th grade Spanish credit

course for Owensboro Catholic High School allowing our students a step up when entering high school.

Our internal processes and structures were not excluded from the uplifting joyous year. We underwent internal process improvements by means of the purchase of a new school administrative and parent communication software. Security for our school family was en-hanced with the addition of smartcard readers on exterior doors and security cameras to monitor traffic. Our Early Learning Program facilities were remodeled to include an additional classroom and age- appropriate restroom. The active PTO, led by Julie Troxel, planned fundraisers, fun events for students and families, and opportunities for parents to be informed of current issues through a variety of speakers and topics. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Libby Brown’s presen-tation on raising resilient children was a well-attended PTO event. The School Council met monthly as an advisory group to the admin-istration while also planning, coordinating, and running the annual Fall Festival, which was a huge success.

The joy was highly visible as we practiced our faith. This was espe-cially true during our First Responders Mass in which first respond-ers from all departments: police, fire, emergency medical, etc. joined us to proclaim the Gospel. We are proud to say that after involve-ment in our school and parish life nine school families were con-firmed and 29 students received 1st Communion. Along with weekly Mass attendance and daily religious curriculum, students participat-ed in religious retreats including the Brain Injury Awareness Camp Retreat, the Gasper River Retreat, the 1st Reconciliation Retreat, the Brescia University Retreat, the Mount Saint Joseph Retreat, the Saint Margaret’s Chapel Retreat, and the 8th Grade Retreat. Teachers also visit the Chapel regularly.

Our students found joy as they practiced one of the school’s three main pillars, service. Holy Name School students have received the Co-Ed Y Club Service Award for most hours served continuously since the year 2000. The 2016-17 school year was no exception. Students were seen living their faith as they cleaned at St. Vincent, prepared for the Lion’s Club Tri-Fest, served meals at the Salvation Army, polished church pews, cleaned the Henderson riverfront, worked at Riverview School, collected gifts for the Fr. Bradley Women and Children’s Shelter, read to small children, and countless other tasks. Not only did our students find joy, they gave joy as seen by the many smiles and thanks received.

Holy Name School Highlights

Our academic successes provid-ed for incredible joy as we con-tinued curriculum alignment and completed our first full year of MAP testing for K-8. Testing affords teachers an ongoing picture of student progress, and online MAP testing provides an individualized, intuitive assess-ment for each student. Our students demonstrated a strong understanding of the reading and math curriculum. 83.3% of our students school-wide are at or above grade level in Read-ing. 82.2% of our students school-wide are at or above grade level in Math. This grasp of academics was further demonstrated in the triumphs of our Ele-mentary, 6th grade, Middle Grades Academic Teams, and our KYA participants.

HNS continues to be blessed with a very high level of professionalism among our educators with faculty credentials as follows: Rank III Bachelor’s Degree 27.6%, Rank II Master’s Degree 62.1%, and Rank I 30 Hours+ beyond Masters 10.3%.

After 20 years of service, Mr. Tom Tweddell is retiring from his full time roll as Middle School Science teacher and resident meteorolo-gist. If you were not aware, Mr. T. was the go to man when it came to predicting snow days and other weather events. As is the case with many of our retired teachers, Mr. T’s smiling face will still be seen around the building as he maintains his position coaching our Academic Team to future successes. We also say good-bye to Principal Nancy Mills. Mrs. Mills is responsible for our stu-dents having the option to re-ceive high school credits and Mill’s Minutes, in which she chal-lenged students to take owner-ship of their academic progress and test to the best of their abili-

ties. She leaves us as a result of her husband’s job relocation. She will be missed and we wish her the best. President Kamille Stich has decided to more fully engage in her daughter’s high school years and will be stepping down. As you may have heard her say, “Once they’re in high school, one foot’s out the door and the other’s on a banana peel.” Any parent can relate to the feeling that the times flies by. We pray that Mrs. Stich finds joy with her family in their new adventure. Scottie Koonce replaces Mrs. Mills as Principal and Julie Eadens replaces Mrs. Stich as President. Both are excited to join the HNS administrative team and are ac-tively working hard this summer to prepare for the new year.

Joy flowed throughout the athletic teams with high participation, excellent sportsmanship, team work and victories.

In May, we gathered to send 45 eighth grade students onto their high school years. With confidence these stu-dents enter high school knowing they are prepared with a solid foundation of faith, academics, and service not only for the next four years, but for many years to come. They are Cardinals for life who will represent Holy Name School and al-ways be welcome in our halls.

As the 2016-17 school year came to a close the faculty were invit-ed to reflect on their year of joy. Over and over during this reflec-tion teachers shared their moments of joy and it became clear that not only had we worked for our joy, we had achieved it. At this

time, we were challenged to continue to work towards always finding joy and in the coming year to take that joy and be courageous. So, with joy in our hearts, we will turn to new, courageous endeavors. We thank each and every individual who played a hand in making this year of joy a success. We are grateful to all those who support HNS, especially the parishioners of Holy Name Church. Please pray for God’s continued blessings on our Holy Name School Family, and know that as you pray for us we will pray for you.

Finally, but never least, a BIG thank you to all families who trusted children in our care. Your

faith gave us the energy to return each day with a fresh start. Your children have inexhaustible

energy that equates to God’s Love for each of us. Each day of VBS contains a Bible Point,

Bible Story and Key Verse (scripture passage). We hope your child came home and spoke of

them…BUT our goal each day was to send your child home to you full of joy, knowing that

God loves him/her and Built him/her for a pur-pose!

Mission accomplished? Indeed!

10 Annual Report to the Parish 2016-2017

Music Ministry: Where are we now, and where are we going?

By: Jenny Gorman, Director of Music and Liturgy

What groups are currently at Holy Name Parish?

7:30 Choir: This smaller choir sings at the 7:30am Mass each Sunday. We gather and rehearse around 7:15 right before we

sing. Simply come to the loft at 7:15 when on weekends that you would like to sing and join in!

9:30 Choir: This larger choir sings at the 9:30am Mass each Sun-day (with an optional hiatus in the summer). We practice in the

choir loft from 6-7pm on Thursday evenings, and gather to warm up at 9am on Sundays.

Junior Singers: This is a group of 6th-8th graders who sing every

other weekend at 11:30 Mass. These young adults practice during the school day.

Faith Alive: This guitar ensemble plays every other weekend at 11:30 Mass. Guitars, bass guitars, mandolins-anything with

strings is welcome! Singers who want to join in are also welcome.

Spanish Choir: Hola amigos! This group of bilingual singers serves at the 1pm Spanish Mass on Sundays. All interested in helping out

are welcome.

Youth Music: High school students team up with to play music for the 5:30 Youth Mass. More contemporary selections are usually

used at this Mass. We are especially looking for youth who are interested in joining a youth choir model.

Cantors: Cantors are used at 4:00pm, 7:30 and 9:30am to help lead the assembly in song. The cantor is sometimes by them-

selves, sometimes backed up by the choir. Practicing and prepar-ing on your own time is a must, but extra rehearsals times can be

scheduled with an accompanist if need be.

Where are we going?

Part 1: What happened on August 5th

On August 5th we had a music ministry inquiry meeting. Similar to an RCIA inquiry meeting- this was a chance for folks to get more

information about the music ministry ins and outs, without actually committing to anything. We discussed the groups that exist- what

their time commitments and styles are like. We also opened the floor for discussion on other types of groups people would be

interested in starting.

Part 2: Missed the meeting and still want more information?

The results of the meeting helped increase the numbers in our

current groups and new group ideas are just being flushed out so you haven’t missed out! We want YOUR help! If you've ever con-

sidered music ministry on any level, please contact Jenny Gorman and [email protected]. Don't have much time? No

problem! Haven't played or sang in a while? No problem! We want to work with you so the parish can benefit from your gifts. There is

a great opportunity here at Holy Name with all the weekly Masses to use those of all backgrounds and styles with varying time com-

mitment levels. Come help us “sing of the goodness of the Lord” (Psalm 89).

Sr. Mary Pauletta Kane By: Mary Ann Thrasher

Sister Mary Pauletta Kane, 92, passed away July 8, 2017 at the Nazareth Moth-er House surrounded by her sisters of Nazareth.

Sister Pauletta served Holy Name as Pastoral Associate for many years in various parish ministries. She led RCIA for several years and was a strong advocate for the Catholic faith. Sister was success-ful in many community projects. She had a smile that was contagious and her Bos-ton accent never left her. She was also a true Red Sox fan.

My friendship with sister was through RCIA, when I was a sponsor through the years. We also worked together in the outreach pro-gram at Holy Name. Our greatest bond was the creation of the Emer-gency Shelter for Women and Children, now known as the Father Bradley Shelter for Women and Children. When I approached her about the need for a shelter she was determined to get it going and was successful…going so far as to write five hundred movie stars for donations and we received $500 from this!

After leaving Holy Name she continued to support the shelter by sending donations and now we have a special advocate in heaven.

Sister’s funeral and burial was July 14, 2017 at Nazareth Mother-house in Nazareth, Kentucky.

Youth Mission Reflections—Missouri

By Elaine Titzer

Starting back in February when sign-ups for Missouri were beginning, I didn’t know if this was going to be a trip for me. My small group really pushed me to go on this trip and reassured me that it would change my heart as well as help me grow in my faith. After praying about it and talking to friends and family, I decided that I would go and give it a try. Mission Missouri 2017 was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. Throughout the week, I witnessed things that opened my mind and heart. On the first day, I was definitely overwhelmed and I didn’t think I was making a difference in the children’s lives. When we got to Steele, there were hardly any kids at the park. I remember asking Han-nah if we go around to tell the kids that we are here, but sure enough within 10 minutes, more than 20 kids came running up to us. Most of them were shy and curious as to what we were doing, but many wanted to be held and played with. My first day I held the baby, Markayla, made bracelets with the kids, and danced with them during praise and worship. At the end of the first day, I was honestly sad that I didn’t connect with a certain kid. I met all of them, but I didn’t get to know any of them on the level I was hoping. That night at the church, I prayed about it and hoped that I would connect with one of them. The next day, we went to the park, cleaned up the trash and as soon as we were done, three girls came walking towards me and some of my friends. One of those girls ran up to me and gave me one of the biggest hugs and automatically held my hand and wouldn’t let go. Nykhia, a nine year old who needed love was the girl that hugged me and held my hand. My prayers were answered, and I hoped I could make a difference in her life over the next two days. That night at praise and worship, I was assigned to construction for the next day, which made me sad that I wouldn’t see Nykhia the next day, but excited to see what God had in store for me. At construction, I helped put down a floor for a woman and stained a deck. While staining the deck, I didn’t feel like I was mak-ing a difference for anyone, but it reminded me that you won’t always see the outcome of the good things you do for people. After putting down the floor, the woman was so appreciative and it make me realize how blessed I am to live where I live. During construction, I made friendships with new people in our group that I didn’t know before and wouldn’t have gotten the chance to meet otherwise. The fourth day was back at VBS in Steele and I was happy to see Nykhia again. We made a T-shirt together, and played water balloon games together, see-ing her smile was one of the best sights to see. About an hour before we had to leave another girl came up to me and wanted me to hold her. I had so many kids around me, I didn’t get a chance to even get her name. She was with Logan and me until we had to leave and she always wanted to be held by one of us. Seeing her need this much love made me wonder what was her home life was like. When we had to leave both girls were crying in my arms, it broke my heart to know that I had to leave them, but made me happy that I made such an impact in their life in three short days. Reflecting back on Mission Missouri, I have realized that this life isn’t about me, it is about making an impact in the lives of others, and truly showing others who God is and his love he has for us. The children needed us in Steele and God knew they needed us. He saw the need and he provided.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

Youth Mission Reflections—Missouri

By Jyotirmayi Jadhav

Mission Missouri 2017 was an experience like no other. When I signed up for this trip, I had no idea what great things were in store for me. My perspective on life was greatly changed in this short week of service. Mission Missouri has showed me how to give generously and love unconditionally. In this past week hearts have been touched, tears have been shed, friendships have been strengthened, and memories have been made. Not only did this trip give the youth an opportunity to serve others, but it also brought our little community closer as a family. We arrived in the little town on Sunday morning, just in time for Mass. We had been invited by their kind and welcoming community to cele-brate the 125th Anniversary at Sacred Heart. The service was beautiful, and we were very thankful for being invited to something so im-portant to the residents of Caruthersville. After the long day of traveling and celebrations, we prepared for the exciting week ahead of us. That night I thanked God for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve Him and the community. We were up by seven on Monday morning. A majority of the youth went to work at Vacation Bible School, and a few were sent to do con-struction at homes that needed the help. I was excited to work with the children at Vacation Bible School on my first day. On our first arrival, I was shocked by the state of the park. Our youth group began by going around with trash bags in our hands, cleaning up the area. In the beginning, the kids were not very eager to join us in our activities. However, it didn’t take long until they earned our trust. The hours flew by, and every new encounter was a different story to tell. I didn’t take long for me to fall in love with their beautiful smiles. The next day, I was asked to work at the construction site. I was nervous, because I didn’t believe that I could do much to help. When we arrived that morning, we met the lady whose house we would be working on. I got to spend some time talking to her, and she told me sto-ries and showed me pictures of her family. She was very kind to us and thankful for what we were doing for her. That day, I learned that it feels good to go out of your comfort zone to be of service others. I would have never thought that I would someday help rebuild a kitchen floor. You never know what great things God has planned for you. I was glad that I had an opportunity to spend a day at construction, be-cause the happiness in the woman’s eyes were enough to bring tears to mine. In a blink of an eye it was Thursday, and we were all standing in the park saying goodbye to the children at Vacation Bible School. I didn’t expect this experience to be so difficult until I saw them break down into tears as we hugged them for the last time that summer. When we went back to the church that night, Sister Darlene told us that our heart feels broken because we left a piece of it in Steele, Missouri. During that short week, we didn’t cure world hunger. We didn’t eliminate poverty. We didn’t bring about world peace. However, we did change the lives of “People in the small town in Missouri. We may not have changed the world, but we did bring a little bit happiness to those children in Steele. Mission Missouri taught me very valuable lessons about love and faith. I will cherish these memories forever, and I cannot wait to be back next year."

CONNECTIONS By: Frances Summers

Fr. Shonis gave a very interesting sermon on July 2 about taking a couple of his protestant pastor friends (David Salisbury Minister, Henderson Church of Christ & Jim Wofford, Pastor, Henderson First United Methodist Church) on a trip to the Abbey of Gethsemani, near Bardstown. There they attended the monks call to prayers and af-terwards visited Thomas Merton’s grave. This is always the highlight of the trip for most people as Thomas Merton was a famous convert and noted author known world- wide. Several years ago, when the Dali Lama visited the USA – he made a special request to visit his friend’s grave. He was flown in by helicopter to make the visit possi-ble.

Since Nazareth was nearby, the three made their way to the Mother House of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. They entered the church to look around and found two elderly sisters in prayers before the Blessed Sacra-ment. They talked to the sisters and the two pastors came away with feelings of high re-gard for the religious devotion the sisters showed in that very short visit.

This got me thinking about how much we all owed to this order of sisters, here at Holy Name parish and how my family has special ties to the sisters.

Our Dad had a relative (O’Flarherty) who was one of the first Sisters at St. Vincent Academy in Union Co. We understand she rode a mule from Nazareth all the way to the school. This school boarded young ladies from literally around the world. Our dear friend El-eanora Johnson Tigue and her sister were graduates of St. Vincent Academy.

On our Mother’s side, her niece Mary Imogene Perrin never attend-ed a Catholic school and lived in Daviess Co. on a farm, she and her mother Stella Coomes Perrin were unable to attend church very often because her dad, Walter, never owned a car. Her journey to the SCN Novitiate at Nazareth is interesting in itself.

After finishing high school Imogene went on to college at Western. She later told us that in her classes at Western it was plain to her that the Catholic Church was truly the true church. This lead her to start considering becoming a Sister of Charity. She told us she was attending a movie when this thought became so strong she got up and left the theater. She was actually with her date at the time.

Imogene entered the Novitiate and took the habit in March l948. She taught science and biology for many years to secondary and college level students. Later on she lived and worked at Nazareth’s Heritage Hall where she greeted groups and explained the Congre-gation’s early history. One of her daunting undertakings was Archi-vist at Spalding University for the Ursuline Sisters past records of their history. She explained what a challenge she found this to be as everything was in stacks and stacks of unsorted documents.

Sister was our guide when Father Sho-nis took a bus load of H.N. members on this same trip. Our group was greeted by our friends, several relatives, former teachers and Holy Name graduates now present day Sisters of Charity.

We owe our sisters so much for our excellent education and the good jobs we landed after graduation. Both our brothers credited the sisters with the jobs they had during WW II. H.N. boys were required to take shorthand, typing and bookkeeping – just like the girls. Brother Jack kept maintenance schedul-

ing for bombers based in Italy and Kitty (Harold) was secretary for a high-up military officer in Korea. He even had his own way of taking shorthand!

Stories like ours, exist for many, many of the Holy Name graduates who were taught by these wonderful care-giving teachers.
