The 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) February 4, 2018

Reading I: 1 Job 7:1-4,6-7 Responsorial Psalm 147:1-2,3-4,5-6 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19,22-23 Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

Theme: “He approached, grasped her hand, and helped

her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them” (Gospel).

I remember my tour to the Holy Land and one of the holy sites the group visited was the house of Simon. An octagonal church is built on it but the house is restored. Because the church is elevated and has a glass floor, the whole house is viewable from the top. It is the same house being referred to in the gospel. The story of Jesus healing of Simon’s mother in law happened there. Grasping her hand, the fever left her and she recovered. Jesus is powerful in word and in deed.

Medicine as a science has evolved and in our time, we benefit from the excellent work of medical researchers and practitioners, doctors and nurses who have forwarded the cause of health and safety of people. The symbol of medicine is the serpent ascending and curling on a rod or staff and from the biblical view, it is inspired by the book of Numbers, “Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live” ( 21:8).

What we believe is that the Lord is great Healer and can restore anyone who is afflicted with any kind of disease or illness will recover through the power of Jesus Christ. In Mark’s gospel, Jesus confronts and drives away demons and unclean spirits from people who are possessed. Exorcism is His way of freeing people who are enslaved and oppressed by the evil spirit. Even the Evil Spirit recognized and acknowledged Him, as in the case in Mark 1:23-27, the man with unclean spirits, the gospel last Sunday. The encounter with Jesus brings healing and recovery because He is indeed the Healer and Savior. The miracles of Jesus not only effected awe, admiration, and astonishment but more importantly faith and trust in Him. The work of salvation and good news is that people are healed of lingering illnesses (the woman with hemorrhage for 12 years), liberated from the possession of the evil spirit, and freedom from sin.

Let us pray, absolve us O Lord from our iniquities, and free us from sin and evil. With your touch in the sacraments, grant us health of mind and body. May we always live in your powerful yet gentle grace of love and healing, Amen.

Lectura I: 1 Job 7: 1-4,6-7 Salmo responsorial 147: 1-2,3-4,5-6 Lectura II: 1 Corintios 9: 16-19, 22-23 Evangelio: Marcos 1: 29-39

Pastoral Reflection By Raquel Clark, Pastoral Council

Today’s reading from the Gospel of Mark was a difficult one for me. After reading it, I thought, Jesus per-formed healing miracles, we all know that! So, I went through Jesus’ list of miracles to see if I could find some-thing special about this miracle and found that there are 37 miracles listed that Jesus performed and of that 37, the majority of them were healing miracles. But after much thought, I began to think….Did God send his Son to us to perform healing miracles? No, I don’t think so and I don’t think Jesus thought so either. The following morning after, Jesus went off alone to pray and meditate. When Simon found Him, he told Jesus that everyone was looking for him. It easy to come to the conclusion that everyone was looking for Jesus because they wanted Him to continue healing. However, Jesus responded by saying “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” He was sent to us to spread the word of God, to educate us spiritually. Physical healing is great but we need more than that to accept God into our lives. All of the world’s problems cannot be solved through physical healing and Jesus knew that. ______________________________________________________________________________________

1.My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Countless lives are spiritually transformed and uplifted thanks to the generosity of individuals like you to the annual Archbishop’s Appeal. Pray how you can make a sacrificial gift to the 2018 Archbishop’s Appeal. A gift will help continue the Appeal ministries that form and educate future priests, deacons, and catechists, as well as provide food, clothing and other social service programs that aid the most vulnerable in our community. If you’ve already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, thank you for your generosity! If you haven’t yet had an opportuni-ty, we invite you to pray and consider making a gift to this year’s Appeal. Pledge envelopes are available at each pew and at each Church door. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge envelope in the offertory basket during Mass or drop it in the mail. Online gifts can be made at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or by calling the Office of Archbishop’s Appeal at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. May God bless you!

Adult Confirmation

Registration for Adult Confirmation is available now. Adult Confirmation Classes begin Friday February 16th at 7pm in the Religious Ed. Conference room. This class is for adults at least 18 years of age and have already received Baptism and First Holy Communion. If you have any questions or are interested in registering please call the parish office Monday—Friday 9am—5pm closed for lunch 12pm –1pm, (210) 333-5020.

Preparation for Confirmation should aim at leading the Christian toward a more intimate union with Christ and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit – his actions, his gifts, and his biddings – in order to be more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life. To this end catechesis for Confirmation should strive to awaken a sense of belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ, the universal Church as well as the parish community. The latter bears special responsibly for the preparation of Confirmands (CCC 1309).

To receive Confirmation one must be a state of grace. One should receive the sacrament of Penance in order to be cleansed for the gift of the Holy Spirit. More intense prayer should prepare one to receive the strength and graces of the Holy Spirit with docility and readiness to act (CCC 1310).
