15th Sunday of Ordinary

Time July 15, 2018

Reading I: Amos 7:12-15 Responsorial Psalm: 85:9-10,11-12,13-14 Reading II: Ephesians 1:3-14 or 1:3-10 Gospel: Mark 6:7-13

Theme: “Jesus summoned the twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean

spirits” (Gospel).

All of us who were baptized were exorcised and freed from original sin, and this is the prayer of the minister (Canon 861.1, for us Catholics: bishop, priest, or deacon). “Almighty and ever-living God, You sent Your only Son into the world to cast out the power of Satan, spirit of evil, to rescue man from the kingdom of darkness, and bring him into the splendor of your kingdom of light. We pray for this child: set him/her free from original sin, make him/her a temple of your glory, and send Your Holy Spirit to dwell with him/her. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.” Baptism is a start of the life of grace in the Lord Jesus Christ. That is why it is important that one receives baptism in order to be counted as member of the Church and one being saved from the grip of sin and evil.

But Satan is persistent and wished he could have dominion over people and things. When exorcism is talked about, it mostly refers to the diabolical possession or control over people or things. In the gospel, we hear Jesus freeing and liberating people possessed from the grip of the evil one. It is the same authority that Jesus passed on and commissioned to the Apostles, therefore to the Church authority. This is a serious mission and in fact yes somewhat scary because it is the battle of supreme forces. In the Church, the bishop has to commission a special priest to do the function of facing a possessed person (Canon 1172.1). It is important that we are dealing with real Evil possession and not just psychological, mental or emotional disturbances or illness, in this case experts can determine.

When one is diabolically possessed, one is not free. To combat and ward off all influences of Evil One, one has to stay in God’s grace and live a sacramental and spiritual life. For the ministers, discernment, prayer life, and obedience to the proper authority are essential to battle Satan.

In St. Benedict medal, we have this inscription in Latin: Begone Satan, do not tempt me of your vanities (VRSNSMV, Vade Retro Satana, Nonquam Suade Mihi Vana) Evil are the things you offer, drink your own poison (SMQLIVB, Sunt Mala Quae Libas, Ipse Venena Bibas).

15th domingo del tiempo ordinario 15 de julio de 2018

Lectura I: Amos 7: 12-15 Salmo Responsorial: 85: 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 Lectura II: Efesios 1: 3-14 o 1: 3-10 Evangelio: Marcos 6: 7-13

Pastoral Council By Brooke Pawelek, Pastoral Council Member

The Gospel today continues with the apostles being sent out by Jesus into the world to continue His works. The apostles were sent out with only sandals on their feet and one tunic to keep them warm on their travels. They relied on the goodness and generosity of the people that took them into their homes just as Jesus did. We can apply this to our lives by trusting that God will be there to fulfill His plan in our lives and not worry about it. Today, we are to continue living out the message of Christ by proclaiming His words strengthened by the Church community around us. We can invite others into the community of faith and help build it up with others. How can you help strengthen our Holy Name community? Is there a God-given talent that you haven’t put to use yet? If so, please consider volunteering. Thank you!
