It is usually very hard to get back into the swing of things after returning from Christmas Break. However, the children have settled in nicely! Progress Reports have been distributed. Congratulations to the students on their achievements. What I find most important is when we take what is being focused on in the classrooms and bring it to our daily lives. It is what we call Christian living! Like I always tell the children...We may be the only face of Jesus that someone might ever meet. We may be the only Bible that someone might ever read. Please continue to pray for our Second Grade students who are in the immediate preparation for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation. They are working on their prayers, songs and studies. We are focusing on the parables of the Lost Sheep and The Prodigal son. The Sacrament of First Reconciliation will take place during the week of February 6, 2017. Children will arrive in the classroom at the regular class time and parents are invited to wait for us in Church. We look forward to a beautiful celebration of God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call the office. Looking ahead: Classes will not be in session on Thursday, February 2, 2017. Pastor’s Poetry Post-It

A Winter’s Epiphany

Timeless thoughts of a winter’s stare; eyes gazing over a landscape bare. Memories drift on a blustery breeze; dying light ushers in the freeze. Reaching out for a grasp on the present; stillness sets in, alone, and desolate. Future unknown, outcome uncertain; brilliance shadowed by a drawn curtain. Path now set, laid before me known; closing light now emanating from home. Enter my homestead, heart filled with glee; two eyes of the future peering upward at me. Trusting in him to forge forward until fulfilled; basis of strength, values I have instilled. A weary mind at last permitted to rest; reflecting on the realization of how I am blessed.

For the celebration of the liturgies during Ordinary Time, we are changing the mass setting, the Gloria and the Gospel acclamation. All are selections we have done before, and it is our hope they will be familiar to you. The Gloria is from A New Mass for Congregation written by Carroll T. Andrews. Carroll Thomas received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Wisconsin and then his Licentiate in Music (summa cum laude) from the University of Montreal in 1947. In 1965 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he became Director of Music for the Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine and later for the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Music has always been his career even in military service where he organized many musical groups, vocal and instrumental, including the Continentals Band which toured occupied countries. He was known as an accomplished organist, director and composer of hundreds of published pieces and books of church music, as well as sets of books of secular music. For many years he specialized in Gregorian Chant and taught courses in early forms of music. He was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the American Guild of Organists. Among his many awards was the Papal Medal Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in 1999. His composition of the Gloria has the distinction of being the only one continually published since 1970. Carroll Andrews died in 2014 at the age of 96. The Gospel acclamation, the Alleluia sung before the gospel is proclaimed, we are using is from the Jubilation Mass written by James Chepponis. Fr. James Chepponis is a priest of the Pittsburgh Diocese, ordained in 1985. He received his Bachelor's degree in Music from St. Fidelis College/Slippery Rock University, with a major in organ and a minor in voice. Fr. Chepponis received a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts in Systematic Theology from Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland. The mass setting is by Dan Schutte, and titled Mass of Christ the Savior. Dan Schutte is one of the best known Catholic composers. He was born in Wisconsin and entered the Jesuit order after high school but left in 1986. His compositions include City of God, Here I Am Lord, and Table of Plenty. Dan explained his inspiration for this mass setting as follows: “I wanted the music to be accessible to all those gathered for worship, I wanted the melodies to quickly and easily become like an old friend. My inspiration came from thinking of a typical community celebrating the Eucharist on Sunday. Then I imagined Christ the Savior standing there with us, praying with us, singing with us, proclaiming the scripture with us, giving thanks with us, and finally sharing the meal of His own body and blood with us. The title Mass of Christ the Savior seemed most appropriate.” The Gloria and the Gospel acclamation are not in our hymnal, but the Holy can be found as #916, the Mystery of Faith, #917, the Amen, #920 and the Lamb of God, #921. As always, we are grateful for your participation in the music for the liturgies.

FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF SAINT PAUL, APOSTLE

FEAST DAY - JANUARY 25th

St. Paul was a tireless apostle both in his work as a preacher and in his personal living out of the gospel he preached. His conversion is one of the most dramatic moments in religious history. It was so sudden, so intense, so mysterious, and so fruitful for the church. St. John Chrysostom in a homily praising St. Paul, said: “Paul, more than anyone else had shown us what man really is, and in what our nobility consists…Each day he aimed ever higher; each day he rose up with greater ardor and faced with new eagerness the dangers that threatened him. He summed up his attitude in the words: I forget what is behind me and push on to what lies ahead…The one thing he feared, indeed dreaded, was to offend God; nothing else could sway him.”

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME January 22, 2017

First Reading: Isaiah 8:23-9:3 The prophet Isaiah describes the anguish of a conquered people, but he promises that they will triumph and will see a great light as on the “day of Midian.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17 Paul speaks to the Corinthians with both anger and indignation because they are quarreling among themselves as to whom they should show allegiance. Some wish to follow Paul; some, Peter; others Apollos; others, Christ. Gospel: Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus begins his mission by going to Capernaum, fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah. He selects Peter, Andrew, James and John as his disciples, inviting them to be “fishers of men.”
