MARCH 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians, The season of Lent began on Wednesday, February 14th. Our school celebrated with an Ash Wednesday mass. As a school community, we are journeying

through the Lenten season by giving alms, praying reflections on the morning announcements and engaging in various classroom activities. Join us on Friday, March 9th at 9am as we celebrate the ‘Year of the School’ and recognize students receiving ribbons for Followers of Jesus, Healthy Living and Willing Try. March Break is the week of Monday, March 12th -16th. Schools will re-open on Monday, March 19th. Toronto Parks & Rec will be offering programs throughout this week at the Humberwood Centre. Enjoy the March Break with your children. Sincerely, Ana Pires

This year is the culmination of our three-year pastoral plan focusing on Family, Parish and School--Together With One Voice. Catholic education is built on the partnership among our families, parishes and schools, and therefore the Year of the School truly celebrates the foundation of our school communities. Students have been engaged in many activities to mark the

Year of the School. Staff and students collaborated in writing our very own this Holy Child School Prayer.

Pray to Jesus, the Holy Child

Holy Child Jesus, Bless me. Keep me close to You.

I want to please you Jesus, In everything I do.

When I learn, when I play, Be by my side every day.

When at school or at home, Help me feel I'm not alone.

Thank you for the gifts,

You have given me today. Let your light shine through me, Jesus

As You lead the way.

I will always try my best, Please help me find my way.

Guide my heart to be like yours, For this and more, I pray.

Make me love you Jesus, More and more each day.

Amen

Almighty and

Everlasting God,

You have given us Jesus

Christ our Savior as a

model of humility.

He fulfilled Your Will by becoming Man and

giving His life on the Cross.

Help us to bear witness to You

by following His example of suffering

and make us worthy to share in His Resurrection.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your

Son.

Amen

Mental Health Benefits of Prayer During Lent we are encouraged to engage in almsgiving, fasting and prayer. Our focus this month is

on prayer and its many benefits. Prayer offers emotional comfort and reduces stress by: offering a sense of comfort and hope, creating a positive frame of mind, stress relief, and increases feelings of unity and trust. Engaging in daily prayer with students gives them the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God and their community. It also offers a sense of emotional comfort that everyone can benefit from. See www.childdevelopmentinfo.com (provides information related to child development, psychology, health, parenting, learning, media, entertainment, and family activities)

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: FORGIVENESS “Forgive anything you may have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive the wrongs you have done.” Mark 11:25 How timely that the virtue for March is FORGIVENESS. Not only because we are in the season of Lent but also because it is an important cornerstone of our faith and one had that Jesus modeled for us in His life and death. We are reminded that forgiveness is a gift to ourselves as we let go of the burden of resentment when we forgive another person and it’s a gift to our children when we teach and model it to them.

Please join us in acknowledging 25 years of service with the TCDSB to the four staff members who have reached this milestone. On behalf of the Holy Child school community we thank Mdm. L. Zaccagnini, Ms. J. Kieser, Ms. L. Italiano and Ms. D. Zigrossi for their outstanding dedication and contribution to the students they have served over the past 25 years.

Our School Learning Improvement Plan for this year outlines strategies and teacher professional development to improve student achievement in solving math word problems. In an ongoing effort to promote Math learning, we are always looking at ways to support our students. We are very excited about sharing great resources for parents to support their children at home: See attached list of sites and apps. Start off by visiting these sites: https://www.youcubed.org/resource/parent-resources/ and www.Mathbeforebed.com .

This year at Holy Child we are aiming to build and reward our students’ Learning Skills & Work Habits.

Since these are important life-long skills to future student success, we are awarding student achievement. In term one, student achievement in Collaboration and Initiative was recognized. Kindergarten to grade 8 teachers have submitted the names of students who receive an ‘ E’ for

Excellent achievement in their term one reports. In term two, focus will be on Self-Regulation and Independent Work. Grade 7 & 8

students were awarded Honour Roll medals for achieving (80% or more). Our monthly Virtues are recognized as well.

wILDCATS’ NEWS

Exciting news in Wildcats Athletics this month... Holy Child hosted the 2018 West Divisional Tournaments for both Boys and Girls Intermediate Basketball Teams. Both teams of ours played exceptional in this tournament and claimed the West Division Titles this year, advancing them to the Regional stage held at Arch Bishop

Romero High School. However, the Boys and Girls teams fell short at the Regional Tournament. We are still pleased with their effort and all of their hard work this season. The coaching staff: Mr. Di Stefano, Mr. Kassar and Ms. Noronha are proud of how the teams played. Secondly, three students from Holy Child (Omari, Jayden, and Emmanuela) have advanced to the third round of Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship at St. Joan of Arc C.H.S on Sat. March 10 2018. Lastly, Junior Boys and Girls Basketball tryouts will begin in the next few weeks. Tournament dates and tryout dates will be sent home with parent permission forms.

parish will visit the school.

This year’s kick-off assembly for the Heart & Stroke Campaign is on Monday, March 5th. More details to follow.

Holy Child’s annual event is soon approaching. The Passion Play prepares our hearts for Easter. Each year the grade 8 class works very hard for weeks to tell the story of Jesus’ suffering and dying on the cross for each of us. You are invited to attend this year’s evening performance on Wednesday, March 28th at 7-8:30pm. There will be a $2.00 entrance fee. Holy Child students will see the performance the next morning at 9:30 am.

ALL parents are welcome to attend upcoming CSPC meetings: Thursday, April 5th

and Thursday, May 3rd at 6:30 pm.

STUDENT SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S PRIORITY PLEASE NOTE: Be mindful of children walking through the parking lot. The drop off and pick-up area is a “Kiss and Ride”. Drivers are reminded to NOT PARK on/along the curb in this area. School buses always take precedence over cars in the parking lot. Please park in the designated areas so the buses can travel safely. Humberwood Centre

Security Guards and Toronto Parking Enforcement are regularly monitoring safe driving and illegal parking at our facility. Please be informed that drivers will be fined $150 for illegally parking on sidewalks/blocking driveways, entrances and designated areas.

Chess fever is on the rise! Every Friday, Chess Club members busily prepare for upcoming tournaments.

The Junior W5H team participated in a tournament at Msgr. John Corrigan on February 21. We won our 1st round 32-30, but unfortunately lost our next 2 nail-biting rounds by 2 points and 3 points respectively. The games were very close in score and

exciting right ‘til the end. Coaches, Ms. Short and Ms. Healy are very proud of the team’s efforts, Captain Fola, Alessia, Victoria, Shikiyah, David and Gabriel.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES While the TCDSB has established a BYOD- Bring Your Own Device protocol for the academic use of electronic devices

in the classroom setting at the teacher’s discretion and immediate supervision, the social use of such devices is

NOT allowed (for example they are NOT PERMITTED at recess, lunch, in the hallways nor in the washrooms). See

insert in the student agenda for more details. We recommend devices be left at home. If they are brought to school,

they are to be powered off once having arrived to school and put away for the duration of the day. Students will NOT be granted

permission to respond to texts or messages on their devices. Should you, as the parent/guardian, need to contact your child, please

contact the school at 416-393-5433. Your support is very much appreciated.
