NASA scientists predict a solar peak that will boost thechances of witnessing the Northern Lights this December.Governed by an 11 year solar cycle, activity is expected toreach its peak, affording travellers in the Arctic Circle thebest opportunity for strong sightings of the Aurora borealis.

It seems that, for many British travellers, the packageholiday is still extremely popular Almost one in two UK adults who booked an overseas break in the last year did so viaa traditional package deal through a recognised operatoraccording to research conducted by ABTA. Consumers stated that convenience, value and timesaving benefits were the main factors.

Take a grand tour! Escorted trips are the best. According to Caroline Hendry of The Daily Mail, an escorted tour gives the best of both worlds. You see lots of fascinating new places in one holiday and if you have a special interest, such as trains, photography, gardens or gastronomy, then it is the perfect way to share your enthusiasm with like-minded people. In her article, Hendry goes on to give her top picks for an adventurous escorted tour, citing our very own Wendy Wu China tour as one of the best.

But what exactly are the Northern Lights? According to space scientists, the Sun’s current cycle of activity will peak this Winter, so the opportunities for seeing the Northern Lights in late 2013 and early 2014 should be the best for over a decade.

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are a phenomenon of the Earth’s upper atmosphere, sparked by streams of atomic particles from the Sun. Funneled downwards by the Earth’s magnetic field, the solar particles cascade onto the atmosphere in a ring around the poles, making it glow with dancing veils of light.

Experience the Northern Lights

The fantastic Northern Lights are to reach their peak in the next 12 months, says NASA space scientists. In a recent survey by the Passenger Shipping Association, the Northern Lights was voted the natural phenomenon that passengers would most like to view from a cruise ship. Northern Norway is directly under the zone of maximum activity and is hence an ideal place to experience this great natural light show at its best. An Arctic Highlights voyage with Hurtigruten spends its entirety within the Arctic Circle which provides you with the best opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and to take part in some fantastic optional winter excursions!

Experience the Northern Lights

Departs 13 Feb & 4, 18, 23 Mar 2014

Winter is perhaps the most special time to explore the wild and untamed Norwegian scenery. The landscape is covered in virgin snow and the air is fresh, pure and crisp. Clusters of cosy houses glow on the shores like embers and the stunning backdrop of snow-clad mountains reflects the polar twilight.

MS Nordlys’ art, décor and colours are all inspired by the Northern Lights phenomenon. With her light and delicate interior, Norwegian artists have created a unique and distinct environment on board. Passengers are encouraged to relax in the ship’s elegant maritime atmosphere, panorama lounges and comfortable reclining chairs. Enjoy the stunning scenery.

The emerald green lakeis the focus of this historic small town, with hotels and restaurants dotted around its shores. Bled is surrounded by the Julian Alps and features a medieval castle clinging to the rock face and a picture-postcard church situated on a tiny island on the lake.

Nearby the 1.6 km long Vintgar gorgeis graced by the Radovna with its waterfalls, pools and rapids. An educational trail leads you over wooden bridges and Žumr’s galleries, and ends with a bridge overlooking the mighty 13m high Šum waterfall.

Ljubljana the capital of Sloveniais a unique crossroad for the Germanic, Slavic and Latin cultures. A city strongly influenced by Austrian architecture, Ljubljana has managed to keep its historic centre intact. The Franciscan Church which is the landmark on Preseren square, the Central Market, the Triple Bridge and the medieval castle are just some of the highlights of this beautiful city. A funicular railway, a settlement since 1200BC, connects the castle with the centre of the city.

The Franciscan churchbuilt by the Augustinians, is today one of the main symbols of the city due to its location in the central Preseren Square and its striking colour. Its triple staircase which faces the Square has been a popular spot for street artists as it provides a fantastic view of the Triple Bridge, the square and the locals strolling by.

Preseren squareis the main square in Ljubljana, dedicated to the greatest Slovenian poet, Dr. France Preseren. His statue stands in the middle of the square and is surrounded by the finest succession of buildings from the start of the 20th century. Connected by Plecnik’s Triple Bridge, the Old Town, Market and the river, it is the perfect spot to start your city exploration.

Visit the Central Marketto truly feel the city’s atmosphere and its people. It is one of the masterpieces of Plecnik’s architecture and located by the river, where its monumental arcades connect the Triple and Dragon bridges. With the cathedral of St. Nicholas and baroque surroundings it seamlessly melts into the Old Town.

Stunning Slovenia

Slovenia is breathtaking, beautiful, enchanting and incredible and it is home to some of the best kept secrets in Europe.
