WE WERE SO EXCITED TO COVER AND DO EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS

FOR THE 2ND ANNUAL LA COSTA FILM FESTIVAL THIS YEAR HELD

AT THE GORGEOUS OMNI LA COSTA RESORT & SPA. This festival is

amazing and is getting bigger and better every year thanks to Mike and

Ruby Callihan the founders of this amazing festival and the growing

number of supporters they have gained over the last 2 years! We got the

chance to speak with Mike and Kymberly Wright, the Program Director

about their fabulous festival!

This year, the festival partnered with Mandalay Sports Media (MSM) to

help curate the festival’s sports themed narrative, documentary and

shorts programs, as well as to expand their outreach to filmmakers and

distributors in this space.

The La Costa Film Festival (lacostfilmfestival.org) screened 43 films from

13 countries and hosted nightly red carpet galas, exciting panels and

numerous special events. The festival debuted a World Premiere as well

as a special tribute to renowned actor Ed Harris. Yes we got to meet him

and interview this Legend! Amazing!! Pinch me:)

The La Costa Film Festival opened with Frank Vs. God, starring Henry

Cusick and Ever Carradine, which follows a hot shot lawyer, who after a

series of misfortunes, decides to serve God with a lawsuit. The director

and the lead actress, Ever Carradine offered comments before the start

of the film screening, which took place under the stars on Center Court

of the Omni Resort La Costa on Thursday September 18th at 8:30 pm.

The screening followed the Opening Night Gala ‘Taste of North County’

which showcased the area’s exquisite cuisine, award-winning craft brew-

eries and boutique wines – all accompanied by live music. Of course we

get the inside scoop for you and talk with director Stewart Schill and

lead actress Ever Carradine about this amazing movie and what it felt

like debuting at La Costa.

We also spoke to John Hughes about the skateboard movie Signal Hill

Speed Run! He was a pioneer of the knee boarding in the 70s!

The Friday Night Gala kept the party moving, preceded by a special

reception at the Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas in Carlsbad honoring Ed

Harris. Mike Tollin, the producer/director of Radio: The movie, was on

hand to share the spotlight and add his insights on the film and working

with Ed Harris. The party then moved back to the Omni La Costa for the

World Premiere screening of Brothers in Exile , a true American story

which follows the heart wrenching journey of two brothers who risk their

lives to escape Cuba and play professional baseball in America. The film’s

director, Mario Diaz and Dave Check, MLB producer, offered brief com-

ments prior to the screening.

The evening finished with a rousing special After Party at the Omni, with

live music, appetizers, and plenty of libations.

Saturday was all about the sports panels. We loved being involved and

HERA HUB’S OCTOBER AUTHORS’ SALON CONTINUED TO ATTRACT AVID READERS, INTERESTED NOVICE AND

EXPERIENCED WRITERS, AS WELL AS PUBLISHED AUTHORS. Featured authors M. Louisa Locke and Susan Meissner shared excepts from their bestselling books and talked about how they obtained their story concepts and connect with their readers. “It was our intention to create a venue to celebrate local authors, share writing resources and publishing strategies. With the valuable connections that Linda Scott, Ed.D., founder of eFrog Press, has established in the writing and publishing community, it seemed like a perfect collaboration which benefits the North County community,” said Catherine Mowbray-Lorenz, Director of the Hera Hub Carlsbad. As one guest stated, “It is a wonderful night out, which provides fun, intellectual stimulation and encouragement to writers.”

Authors’ salon will be presented quarterly at Hera Hub Carlsbad, with a different genre featured each quarter. The next Authors’ Salon will be held on Tuesday, January 27th, and will feature award-winning children’s authors Edith Hope Fine and Nancy Johnson. For more information visit https://www.facebook.com/

herahubcarlsbad or email [email protected].

Our coworking space serves as a revolving gallery featuring local

artists. Lola Juris, an 85-year-young watercolorist from Carlsbad,

is the spotlighted artist this autumn. Lola has been painting for

over 70 years, and we are grateful that she has shared her gift

with our members and visitors. Our art exhibits rotate throughout

the three San Diego Hera Hub locations every four months, with

a new exhibit being introduced annually. Deborah Wiley, our art

curator, organizes and curates the art to ensure that we have a

variety of compelling and lovely works to display.

Hera Hearts launched in October and provided three North

County Nonprofits with mastermind opportunities to receive

high-level feedback from the audience addressing their most

important challenges. Leap to Success, Chelsea’s Light and

the Palomar Health Foundation were the featured nonprofits.

Guest speaker, Chief Deputy Assistant District Attorney Summer

Stephan addressed the vital need that these nonprofits provide

to victims of violence in North San Diego County. Hera Hearts’

aims to provide a fresh perspective on challenges and to increase

exposure for nonprofits.

underneath a pecan tree. Take a kayak out to enjoy the lake, then

stretch out with a yoga class. Dinner is a real treat and a testament

to their French Executive Chef, Stéphane Beaucamp, who has a

passion for local ingredients. A highlight is the local seafood, such

as Gulf shrimp with creamy grits, paired perfectly with a glass of

rosé from Provence. After dinner, join an enriching workshop, such

as the Art of Aromatherapy taught by their Director of Flora and

Fauna, Trisha Shirey, who is like an encyclopedia of knowledge that

will inspire you to garden, or at least appreciate what you can do

with the bounties of a garden. For a night in, consider checking-

out one of their complimentary movies from their movie library

and ordering a glass of wine and dessert to take back to your

room, or simply enjoy a good book with a cup of hot tea.

A spa resort retreat is not complete without enjoying the spa.

The LakeHouse Spa at Lake Austin is the perfect place to unwind.

Try one of their signature treatments, such as Gifts of our Garden

where you choose an herb from their organic Healing Garden that

is used in their homemade scrub, giving you the perfect trio with

a body scrub, massage, and body wrap in one treatment. While at

the LakeHouse Spa, make sure you enjoy the steam, sauna, and hot

tub.

A great retreat is all about balance, which will inspire you to create

more joy and more wellness in your everyday life, such as taking

time to go for a hike, walk at the beach, get a massage, create an

herb garden, and cook an enjoyable meal. Lake Austin Spa Resort

is a special place that will inspire you to create more balance in

your life, the perfect New Year’s retreat and resolution.

Etiquette | HOLIDAY PARTY PLANNING

BY ANDIE BEYER GREEN

THE GUEST LISTIf you are planning a bigger party, consider guests who will mix well. If you are hosting your exercise group, don’t worry about not inviting your closest friends. They understand it is a party for the group and are not invited to every gathering.

PARTY THEMEThink beyond the traditional dinner party. Consider other ways to celebrate depending on the guests and timing.

• Brunch• Tea• Ornament and/or cookie exchange• Open house • Theme cocktail party• Wrapping party• Potluck appetizer party• Holiday movie marathon

INVITATIONSThe holiday season is a busy time, so send invitations early. Set the RSVP date so that you have enough time to plan, shop and decorate.

PREPARATIONSPlan the event so that you can enjoy your guests. For example:

• If possible, prepare food beforehand• Choose a drink that works well with your

theme (e.g., glögg for a glögg party) instead of offering your entire bar, which can lead to guests asking for specialty drinks you do not know how or want to make

• Set up a help-yourself drink and/or a water station if you are having more than a few guests

If you are hosting a larger party with guests who do not know other guests, ask a friend who is an easy conversationalist to introduce them to others.

ARRIVALAside from taking coats and purses, your first job is to get your guests drinks. This gives your guests something to do with their hands.

Now you can relax and enjoy your party. Keep an eye out for your guests and remember you set the tone for the evening, so enjoy yourself.

aylaJicillianoSOF BON AFFAIR WINE:

WHERE VICE MEETS VIRTUE

BY KERRY WRIGHT

PHOTOGRAPHED BY DENISE VAKILI

AS A WINE DRINKER, I WAS VERY EXCITED WHEN I HAPPENED TO BE WATCHING SHARK TANK ONE EVENING AND COMING UP NEXT WAS A WOMAN PITCHING A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE TO WINE! I wasn’t quite sure how that was possible, but I was intrigued. As I watched Jayla Siciliano present her product to the Sharks, I couldn’t help but think one thing…how is she pulling this off? It looked so intimidating to be standing there fielding questions from some of the best entrepreneurs in the country. However, Jayla looked cool, calm and collected; you could see and feel her passion for her product. I was so impressed by her, I immediately did two things: I emailed her about possibly featuring her in the magazine and I went out and bought a bottle of Bon Affair.

Turns out, I love the wine! And after meeting Jayla, I couldn’t help but love her too! This is a woman who followed a dream, stuck to her belief she had a viable product, and weathered the storm of entrepreneurship. Physically, she’s a tiny woman, but her tenacity to succeed

JAYLA SICILLIANO

is larger than life. Most impressive, I think she is truly one of the nicest women I’ve ever met! We had so much in common and our initial coffee meeting turned into a two-hour gabfest.

Read on to discover the passion behind the product, and what it’s really like to be on Shark Tank!

NCW: Give our readers a bit of history on what Bon Affair is and how you came up with it.

J.S.: Bon Affair is a light sparkling wine option that I created to balance my love for wine and my love for living a healthy, active lifestyle. In my past career, I worked in the fashion and action sports industry and there were constantly events/travel/dinners. They all seemed to involve alcohol and social drinking. Outside of work, I was super active with teaching kickboxing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, hiking, outrigger, and various other activities. The social drinking that was connected to all of the work events I attended was not ideal for my lifestyle. I discovered that adding soda water to my wine allowed me to drink socially and still feel good the next morning.

NCW: When did you know that Bon Affair was a risk worth taking?

J.S.: While I was working at Burton I was starting to feel really burnt out. Although they were an amazing company to work for and it was a great job, I didn’t feel like it was going to get me where I wanted to go. While out one summer evening, I noticed how many of my friends (women and men) were drinking spritzers. It was then that I realized there was an underserved market.

A couple months later during one of my longer business trips to Asia I was feeling extremely exhausted. I was about to turn 30, I wasn’t married, I didn’t have children, and I was ready to take the risk. It was now or never! I returned home from that trip, gave my notice, and dove in head first.

NCW: You were on the television show Shark Tank! How exciting! Can you tell us what that was like?

J.S.: It was a pretty awesome experience! However, I never thought I would do something like getting on national TV and spilling my guts about my business. I knew it was a risk going on there, but I was willing to gamble in order to get the exposure and connections I needed to get Bon Affair off the ground.

Page 18: North County Woman Magazine-Holidays 2014

Page 19: North County Woman Magazine-Holidays 2014

North County Woman • HOLIDAY 2014 | 19

It was a LONG process leading up to the show. I studied every episode before I went on. I knew it was going to be a tough sell for the sharks so I was ready to be torn apart. I went in there to get a deal and it was intense! I was in there for about an hour and they were all firing questions at the same time (something you don’t realize when watching the show). It was difficult to know who to answer and they cut you off mid-sentence. Honestly, the whole experience is a bit of a blur. It felt as though I were in there for only five minutes when some of the Sharks started going out and not wanting to make a deal. It was a whirlwind!

Thankfully, I secured a deal with Mark Cuban, and I was super excited! Unfortunately, I couldn’t talk about it with anyone because of the airing dates of the show and it was pure torture. We finally closed the deal five months later and the episode aired three months after that. All of the waiting and not being able to talk about it really felt like the hardest part.

The best part? After the show aired, the business exploded! Our online sales sky rocketed and have remained steady. We now have distributors in four states which is so helpful because before Shark Tank I was doing all the deliveries myself. It’s been a crazy amount of work, but the great response from consumers has made it so much fun!

NCW: What is it like working with Mark Cuban and what is the most important thing you have learned from him thus far?

J.S.: It’s been great working with Mark! Not only has he provided us with amazing resources in all areas of the business, but he’s had some great ideas. In addition, he was instrumental in getting us into the Texas market. I couldn’t be happier.

The most important thing I’ve learned is to work on a tight budget and manage our cash flow. Having someone like Mark involved just makes you insanely motivated! I didn’t think I could be any more motivated before this, but sure enough it goes to show you can always improve and kick it up a gear.

NCW: For all of our female entrepreneurs out there, what advice would you like to share with them about starting a new business?

J.S.: Patience and persistence are the words I live by. I think it’s important to understand that things typically take longer than you want/expect, but you must remain relentless in your pursuit. If you’re passionate about your business, ready to make some sacrifices, and willing to work your butt off - go for it! I think the number one thing that helped me out along the way (aside from my insanely supportive husband) was finding good advisors who gave me tough love and told me the truth. Ultimately, surrounding yourself with people who believe in you helps you get through the tough times.

NCW: Where can we go to purchase Bon Affair?

J.S.: Bon Affair is available in Whole Foods all over Southern California and Albertsons in San Diego, as well as online in 43 states.

I want to thank Jayla for taking the time to sit down with us and allowing us to feature her in the magazine. In my opinion, she deserves to do some celebrating herself! She literally threw herself into a tank of business-hungry sharks and came out a winner. She is funny, kind, and extremely motivated. She had a dream and turned it into reality. Let’s all raise a glass of Bon Affair and cheer Jayla on living the ultimate American dream!

Humor | RAZZLE, DAZZLE, FRAZZLE

BY STEPHANIE LEWIS

T’WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE MENOPAUSE, WHEN ALL THROUGH MY BOD,

NOT A CREATURE MOANED OR COMPLAINED MORE THAN ME, OMG!

The Size 6’s were hung in the closet with care,

In the hopes that Jenny Craig would soon take me there.

My husband was nestled all snug in his bed,

While visions of erotic positions danced in his head.

When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter

Like when I shoved a Hooter’s waitress, with a taco platter.

Away to the window I flew, triggering a hot flash,

Followed by clammy skin, irregular heartbeat, and allergic rash.

(Brain fog made me forget to tear open the shutters and pull up the sash)

Oh, the moon on the breast of the new fallen snow!

Not to mention my own breasts had sunk to a new low.

When what to my fatigued eyes, who should appear?

But a rich, black, chatty woman and a man wanting to do my pap smear.

This wasn’t the plastic surgeon I ordered or the Avon Lady chick!

I looked closer, recognizing Oprah and Dr. Oz, her sidekick.

Then more rapid than eagles, my troubles came with sharp aim,

And Dr Oz. and Oprah whooped and shouted, calling them by name.

“Now Itchy, Now Bitchy, Now Sweaty And Sleepy,

Now Bloaty, Now Psycho, Forgetful and Weepy.

Onward Insomnia, Moody, and Fibroids So Creepy!

To the Top of the medicine cabinet with your symptom roll-call

Dash away Metamucil, Calgon, Midol, Prozac and Geratol!

Then up to the Ceiling Fan, this pair of Celebrities flew,

Cameras rolling, talk shows and infomercials filming on cue.

Just then in a Twinkling, what did I hear on the roof?

A Sitcom Star more famous than this ridiculous spoof!

As I drew in my muffin top, and was turning around,

Down the chimney Ms. Suzanne Somers came with a bound.

She was dressed all in (faux) fur from her head to her (chiseled) thigh,

And she said, “Tis not the Thigh Master that keeps me so spry!”

Bundles of hormones were flung over her (well-toned) back,

With more Bio-Identicals stuffed in her (shapely) fanny pack.

Her eyes, how they sparkled, her dimples how merry,

Her cheeks were like roses, her lips like a cherry.

“Listen,” I interrogated, “Do you still eat Gluten and Dairy??”

“And how come you’re still here? Three’s Company went off the air?

If I sound like a Grinch – It’s cuz I just found yet another gray hair.

What did you do with that fat guy and his white beard and round belly?

That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

(And made me feel less guilty when I indulged at the Deli.)

Say, you don’t have a stump of pipe in your teeth,

With smoke that encircles your head like a wreath.

And I betcha a new blonde wig, you wear Spanx underneath!”

I demand someone plump or ugly like ‘Elf on the Shelf,’

Someone who makes me feel better, when I compare myself.

With a wink of her eye, and a twist of her shiny, platinum head,

Suzanne said, “No more Somercizing, you’ve nothing to dread!”

She spoke not another word and went straight to her work,

Filled a few lacy stockings, (with garters) flashing a sexy smirk,

And laid a manicured fingernail aside her cute button nose,

Didn’t her mom warn her about smirking, maybe her face froze?

I sprung to my feet as Dr. Oz and Oprah gave a wolf whistle,

Finally some hope that went beyond Black Cohosh and Milk Thistle!

Who knew that a night of magic with Suzanne, Oprah and Dr. Oz

Would have me feeling so much better about entering Menopause?

And away they all flew, but I heard them exclaim,

“If you listen to us, you’ll be one awesome, hot dame!”

That was the last I saw of those three, as they drove clear outa sight,

“Happy Menopause to all and don’t grow old without a good fight!”

ANOTHER FASHION WEEK SAN DIEGO (FWSD) WRAPPED ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5, AT THE SAN DIEGO PORT AUTHORITY BROADWAY PIER, AFTER A WEEK OF FESTIVITIES, IN-CLUDING RUNWAY FASHION SHOWS, MEDIA EVENTS, INDUSTRY TALKS AND A TRUNK SHOW. But the highlight of the week was the

Thursday night show, when plus-size contempo-

rary women’s wear designer Sharlene Borromeo’s

models took to the runway wearing her markedly

innovative, classic and timeless designs for her

line, A’doreus. Taking home a first-place win for

top FWSD designer, Borromeo could not have

been more thrilled.

“It’s pretty awesome just because I’m the only plus-size designer

here at Fashion Week San Diego, and it’s really important because

it’s a niche that hasn’t been tapped into yet,” said Borromeo. “ I’m

just really excited and honored that Fashion Week San Diego gave

me a platform to be the first and only plus-size designer here.”

Borromeo’s showcase at FWSD is a logical reflection of statistics,

which are now showing that 70 percent of American women are

size 16 and above. According to NPD Group, the plus-size catego-

ry in America alone generated $17.5 billion from May 2013 to April

2014, and, according to analysts, retailers and fashion designers

alike are seeing this as a growth opportunity.

“I love what I do, and what keeps me going is being able to put

a garment on someone and see them transform into a very con-

fident woman,” Borromeo said. “ I definitely think that plus-size

fashion is just as relevant as regular-size fashion because a major-

ity of American women are larger, and that’s not being represent-

ed at malls or online. I’m here to help represent that community.”

Your Health | DIABETES PREVENTION

NEARLY 10% OF AMERICANS, OR 25 MILLION PEOPLE, HAVE DIABETES. More startling is that according to the American Diabetes Association, another 86 million Americans across all ethnicities have “pre-diabetes,” yet most of them are unaware of it. You may be one of those people, and now—during American Diabetes Month—is the time to take action to prevent the onset of this chronic and often fatal disease.

KIDS & TEENSThe rise of obesity amongst children has pushed diabetes into my pediatric practice. The San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative promotes an easy pneumonic. “5-2-1-0” stands for daily limits of:

• 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables• 2 hours or less of recreational screen time • 1 hour or more of physical activity• 0 sugary drinks (soda, juice, sports drinks, etc.)

WOMENAdults should get screened for diabetes. Diets high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fish, and poultry, as well as regular exercise (150 minutes weekly) remain the primary form of prevention. However, if you are under 60, and at an increased risk for

developing diabetes (obese, or history of diabetes in pregnancy), your physician may start you on a medication to prevent diabetes.

PREGNANT WOMENIf you’ve had gestational diabetes, you’re at an increased risk for developing diabetes in the next 10-20 years. To prevent gestational diabetes, improve your health before you get pregnant. Once you’re pregnant, don’t’ “eat for two.” Pregnant women need no extra calories in their first trimester, and only about 350-450 extra calories—from nutritious sources—in the second and third trimester to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Those born to a mom with gestational diabetes have an increased risk for diabetes later in life. Breastfeeding may reduce the risk of diabetes for both mother and child.

While some people will develop diabetes despite their best efforts, all of us should work to reduce our chance of diabetes. It’s good for overall health and it might just save your life. To learn more about diabetes and prevention programs, talk to your doctor, visit the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org , or visit Vista Community Clinic’s website.

10 Natural Tips for Reducing Holiday StressBE HONEST. What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the holidays: winter scenes, candy canes and carolers, or maxed out credit cards, burned turkeys, and a family member crying in the bathroom?

If you said the latter, congratulations, you are in the majority group. Although holidays are supposed to be a time for family, friends, and celebration, they can also be a time of anxiety, depression, and stress, but they don’t have to be.

Following are 10 tips on how to keep the stress levels down this holiday season and the fun levels up:

BE GENTLE AND KIND TO YOURSELF AND FIND HUMOR WHEREVER YOU CAN. Keep things in perspective. It seems that everyone else’s deadlines and projects are always more important than yours. Remember that you are the engine pulling the family/office/charity/organization/school functions and projects train. If the engine breaks down, then the whole train comes to a screeching halt. Even machinery has to be turned off for maintenance, especially during heavy use. The holidays are no exception. Take a time out and do whatever you like to do in order to give yourself more energy, power, stamina, and happiness (reading a book, yoga, watching a movie, getting a massage). Most importantly, do what makes you happy and don’t feel guilty about it. Trust me, you will earn your time out when everybody shows up at your house for the holiday dinners!

BE AWARE AND ACKNOWLEDGE ANY FEELINGS THAT MAY COME UP. Holidays are not always fun and games for everyone. There may be past hurt feelings or memories of family or friends that are no longer with us. Remember the fun times you had with them, cherish the memories, and be grateful that they were in your life to begin with. Look for good, positive things, and be grateful for what is in your life now.

PLAN AND CALCULATE FOR UNHEALTHY MEALS AND BEVERAGES. It is hard to eat 100% healthy anyway, but during the holidays sometimes it can be nearly impossible. I recommend eating light meals such as salads, roasted or lightly steamed vegetables, quinoa etc…along with drinking a lot of alkaline water the day before, the day of, and the day after a party. Make sure you eat healthy BEFORE you go to a party, and while you are there go easy on the unhealthy stuff. Don’t deprive yourself, but just a few bites of what you want to eat is a healthier way to go. And speaking of eating well…

EAT HEALTHY! 80% of your immune system is located in your gut. So if you want to stay healthy (sans colds and flu), keep your digestive system healthy by eating mostly organic squash, veggies, fruit and taking probiotics. An excellent way to prepare your gut for healthy digestion is by drinking hot water with honey and lemon first thing in the morning instead of coffee. This also aids in weight loss. (Now I have your attention, don’t I?)

AVOID SUGAR AND ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS AT ALL COSTS! I might as well have asked you to kiss a unicorn while I’m at it, right? The truth is that eating sugar is the first step towards stress. If you have a toxic gut, how can anything else run well? Add to that junk food, GMO’s, and

too much alcohol, and you’re setting yourself up for a rough time.

SLEEP. You’ve seen the studies on how important sleep is. It is twice as important during hectic, busy, stressful times. Your body needs the down time to recuperate, recover, and rebuild. The most important thing you can do is adhere to your usual sleep pattern as closely as possible. With all of the holiday parties, be sure to take into consideration the time you have to be up the next day and how long you want to stay. If you come up short on sleep, add an extra hour of sleep for several nights to make up for the deficit. The recommended amount of sleep is seven to eight hours.

PERFECTION… THERE’S NO SUCH THING!  Trying to be the perfect wife, mother, boss, employee, hostess, and even friend is an impossible job. Doing the best you can while enjoying yourself and those around you is a much easier, smaller bite to chew and more realistic. Delegate, don’t over extend yourself, say NO, and have fun. It’s your life, and it is up to you to make it a good, memorable one.

EXERCISE. It’s no secret that exercise relives stress, but did you know it helps keep your immune system strong and may even alleviate most colds? A brisk walk, a 15-minute bike ride, anything to get your blood circulating and oxygen/nutrients pumped to every cell in your body is always a step in the right, healthy direction. And just as a reminder, jumping to conclusions and beating around the bush are not forms of exercise!

BULK UP ON SUPPLEMENTS. Being stressed REALLY burns up your B vitamins as well as many other nutrients. Not only do you have to replace the ones you are burning up, it will not hurt to have extra in reserve.

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, AND BY FAR THE EASIEST TO DO IS… BREATHE! When things get tough, the breath gets going. It is a typical impulse when stressed to take shorter, more shallow breaths. This reaction leaves your body with less oxygen when it really needs more. Breathe in slowly as you count to five and then exhale slowly. Do this three times and you will be surprised at how much better you feel - immediately!

So when the phone rings and you see that it’s your credit card company while the oven is billowing black smoke, and you hear whimpering coming from your bathroom, hopefully you will laugh, roll your eyes, take a deep breath and realize that this, too, shall pass… as long as you have plenty of tissues in the bathroom!

DO YOU LOVE IT, HATE IT OR JUST TOLERATE IT? I’m talking about the holiday season. However you may have answered that question, there is one thing that goes with the holidays for virtually everyone: holiday stress. Some thrive on it, others take months to recover from it.

Below are 10 strategies to help mitigate the mental, emotional and physical damages that come with the season. Try to put at least six of them into practice and you can celebrate the New Year with health and happiness!

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF. We get so caught up with our to-do list, which typically involves what we want to do for others, that we often forget to take care of our own needs. Put time on your calendar for reading, a hot bath or even 20 minutes of meditation.

MAINTAIN YOUR EXERCISE ROUTINE. While it may be diffi-cult to keep up the high intensity regiment of a normal week, keeping the placeholder of that routine is helpful come Janu-ary. If you normally run, but don’t have time for exercise and a shower before the holiday party, either cut back on the time allotment or go for a walk instead. Even if all you do is change into workout clothes and sit on the weight bench, you are help-ing to maintain the habit. (And once you get there you might actually lift a weight or two!) It will be so much easier to start back up again if you haven’t neglected your routine altogether.

DON’T OVER COMMIT YOUR TIME. Between work, shopping, holiday parties and events, vacations, travel, family obligations, holiday cards, religious traditions -- and the list goes on, it is easy to become overwhelmed with commitments that start before Thanksgiving and carry into the New Year. Make a list of your top priorities and learn to say no to much of what falls below that line.

EAT CONSCIOUSLY. The average American gains several pounds over the holidays. There are many ways to keep the calorie counts down.

• Start every day with a nutritious breakfast. This will re-duce the calories consumed during the rest of the day.

• Drink a hot cup of herbal tea before meals.

• When eating out at a restaurant, review the menu online before your go. Choose a healthy meal option; once

there don’t open the menu and be the first to order (to avoid temptations); stick with your choice!

• At the holiday meal buffet fill your plate with healthier options first. Put only a taste of the cheese-mashed potatoes on the plate, watch the bread and butter serv-ings and perhaps share a piece of grandma’s apple pie with a loved one.

• Take a walk just before or after the meal.

• Avoid the cookies and brownies sent by the well-mean-ing vendor.

LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE. It’s easy to get caught up in the “spirits” of the season, but they add hundreds of calories, low-er our ability to make healthy choices and can lead to anxiety and even depression, particularly during the holidays. Choose a spritzer with lime instead.

FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE. You can choose how you react to people, places and things. For instance, you can be frustrated with crowded malls or you can listen for the sounds of holiday carols, watch people laugh, and enjoy the fun of finding just the right gift for a loved one.

DON’T RUSH! Plan your time so that you aren’t rushing to get everything done or to arrive on time, as this will surely cause a build-up of stress. Take deep breaths, slow down and just know all will be fine once you get there or when it gets done even if not on an arbitrary schedule.

LOOK FOR GIFTS WITH MEANING. Commercialism can create stress; therefore, finding a gift that your recipient will love will provide you with the joy of giving more than the scarf that is on sale on the end-cap at the mall, unless, of course, you know she will love it!

THE HOLIDAYS CAN BE A TIME OF GRIEF. Choose to remem-ber lost loved ones with happy memories instead of sadness.

BE GENEROUS OF TIME AND SPIRIT. Volunteer to serve meals to the homeless or wrap gifts collected for the chil-dren’s hospital; open doors for the elderly or a shopper with loaded arms; or allow a driver to move into your lane. Nothing reduces stress like getting out of our own heads and helping others – or just being kind.

Style| HOLIDAY HAIR & MAKEUP

BY BRITTANY ADAMSON

AS YOU GEAR UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS, THERE IS ONE THING THAT MIGHT NOT BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR LIST BUT IS SURE TO CROSS YOUR PATH: HOW ARE YOU GOING TO WEAR YOUR HAIR AND MAKEUP IN A WAY THAT FLAUNTS YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY BUT HAS AN EDGE? The holidays are the perfect time to glam up your look! Most

likely you will have a couple of events to go to and you do not want to be

caught rocking the same style! Having a few options in your back pocket

is always a good idea. Not a beauty pro? You can still pull off something

easy yet eye catching; however, if you have a specific red-carpet look

that you’re going for, I suggest calling your favorite hairstylist/make-up

artist. It can be difficult achieving the perfect look, so spoil yourself this

season! Feel like a star and let somebody else handle the hard work while

you sit back with a glass of wine and a magazine. Whether you choose

to do it yourself or seek a professional, read on for great tips and tricks

that will make you feel confident to take on the holidays with your best

foot forward.

Hairstyles have a lot of range this season. For my medium-to-long hair

bombshells, a nice way of dressing up long hair is by curling it and then

using a vintage hairpin or brooch to pin it up. You can also sweep all of

your curls to one side and attach your accessory down at the nape of the

neck to help hold hair over the shoulder, while still adding a little some-

thing. Pulled back or worn down, long, wavy hair is always gorgeous for

a holiday party.

To achieve the looks mentioned above, prep freshly washed hair with

volumizing spray or mousse before giving yourself a blow-out using a

round brush. The bigger the round brush, the more volume and less curl

you’ll have; a smaller round brush will produce less volume and more curl.

I love using Aveda’s Phomolient, Volumizing Tonic, and Pure Abundance

style prep on damp hair. Make sure to wind the hair around the brush to

get big waves. You can also use fat curlers or a one to two-inch curling

wand (depending on the length of hair) to achieve a similar affect by

curling hair in long, horizontal sections. Once hair is set, make sure to

add volume at the crown, if needed, and spray with hairspray to ensure

it holds.

Another look is the messy side bun. This look is always a great go to

HAIR THAT SHINES AND MAKEUP THAT SHIMMERS: Holiday Tips and Tricks

Page 33: North County Woman Magazine-Holidays 2014

North County Woman • HOLIDAY 2014 | 33

and is easy to transition from day to night. Start by creating texture with lots

of dry shampoo. You can also backcomb hair to get it nice and big! Work with

hair that hasn’t been freshly washed so it doesn't slip. Pull hair into a ponytail

holder on the side, backcomb the ponytail so it maintains it's texture, then

wrap the fat ponytail into a loose bun and secure with pins. Spritz hairspray to

maintain the look. I always like to pull out a few strands around the face for a

sassy finish.

For all my short-haired beauties, a vintage style inspired by the The Great

Gatsby is always elegant. Start with a side part, which is the key to achieving

this look. Next, create waves by using a curling wand with a smaller barrel for

shorter hair. (Tip: prior to curling, use a heat-resistant spray such as Aveda

Brilliant Damage Control with Chamomile). Separate hair into sections and

start curling. Once hair has cooled, use a paddle or boar bristle brush to softly

brush out the curls so they create loose waves. Try to focus on creating an S

pattern with the hair around the face, spraying with hairspray as soon as you

see it. (Note: If you want this look but have longer hair, simply follow the steps

above and then create a faux bob by winding curled hair under and pinning at

the nape of the neck).

Another option for dressing up shorter hair is to simply add a few waves and

spray with hairspray to keep it in place. Adding extra curls takes you from

day to night in a snap. If you have a great sleek bob, consider getting it blown

out professionally so it's picture perfect. You can also add a headband as a

cute accessory. To add a little drama to your look, consider a side-swept bang

paired with a messy bob. This is an absolutely gorgeous haircut for any party,

and your friends are sure to notice the difference.

Last, but not least, when you are in a pinch for time try these on-the-go tips.

For straight, medium-length hair, wash and blow dry hair so its 70% dry in the

morning, twist into a low bun (leave a few unkempt strands out around the

face) and then undo hair before the party - you'll have gorgeous waves! You

could also do the opposite. Blow dry hair and wear it down during the day

then twist into a sophisticated bun for the evening. Allowing a few ends to

pop out is very trendy right now. For curly, semi-long hair an unkempt updo is

very sexy for parties. Let hair air dry in the morning and twist ringlets in place

with fingers. After work, pull hair up into a modern version of a French twist

or messy bun. Another option is to pull hair on the sides back and clip in place

with a fancy clip. This look shows off your long curly locks but accentuates the

face as well.

Messy fishtail braids, milkmaid braids that wind around the top of the head,

and the adorable braid that seems almost hidden in a pile of beachy waves

are still popular styles. Regardless of the type of braid you choose, you will be

right on trend if you weave a braid into your hairstyle this holiday season. Just

make sure to look in a mirror and check yourself from behind to make sure

your hair is perfect.

Once you’ve chosen the hairstyle, it’s time to think about makeup! Two looks

are classic and hot right now: The smoky, shimmery eye paired with light lips

and the deep-red lips balanced with a light eye. Shimmer is in this year as it

was last year, and it's the perfect festive look as long as you don't go over-

board on the glitter.

Primers are a must this season for both face and eye makeup. Primers go on

before foundation or eye shadow and keep makeup in place for hours. They

also fill in fine lines and skin impurities so your tinted moisturizer goes on

smoothly (a personal favorite is Smashbox Photo Finish). If possible, try to skip

the foundation and use a tinted moisturizer, which is much lighter and gives

a dewy, more sultry finish. I suggest carrying oil-blotting papers if your skin

tends to get shiny as time wears on. It's better to blot the oil than to continue

applying powder, which can leave your makeup looking cakey.

For a smoky eye, apply eyeliner on both top and bottom lashes. You can wing

your eyeliner out if you choose, but be sure to smudge the rest as dark eyeliner

can age you. Next, use an eye shadow primer (I love Aveda’s Liquid Trans-

former), and add shimmery shadow on the lid. Apply your favorite mascara

to finish the dramatic eye, and brush your outer lashes towards the outside

of the eye to create more of a cat eye. Next, dab a shimmery blush to cheeks.

Powder your face lightly if you choose, and contour under cheekbones and

around jawline if desired. To complete the look, apply a light lipstick or gloss.

If you’re going for a look with deep-red lips, choose a matte eye shadow in a

color that's as close to your skin tone as possible. At most, add light, lumines-

cent neutral color to the inner corner and through the contour of the eye and

thin liner to the top eyelid (my favorite is liquid for this look). Apply a very

light shimmery blush on cheeks. Finally, line lips and fill in with your favorite

red color. For a high-class party, apply more shimmer or go deeper with the

red lipstick. The number one rule to remember: never play up BOTH the eyes

and the lips.

Have fun this season! Make your look as memorable as you are. Remember

this is the time to give and that doesn’t just mean to others. Gift yourself

some pampering and achieve the head-turning compliments you deserve.

Make sure to capture a photo to remember how good it felt to do a little

extra. YOU DESERVE IT.

Happy holidays and cheers to a new year and a new you!

THE HOLIDAY SEASON CAN BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY BUSY TIME FOR MOST, BUT THIS DOESN’T MEAN THAT YOUR EVERY DAY STYLE HAS TO TAKE A BACK SEAT. First fashion

rule of thumb, don’t over think it. Let your seasonal style remain

effortless yet adventurous. Whether you’re running errands,

hosting a dinner party, or attending a work function, be a little

playful in the way you dress. After all, the holiday season is about

entertaining! It is ok to have fun with fashion especially during

the holidays!

As all of your holiday parties start to roll around don’t panic. You

can express your style differently at each event. For example, a

holiday work function is your time to shine. A chance to break

out of your normal work mode and show your co-workers a

more glammed-up version of what they are accustomed to

seeing around the office. Throw on a slim, sexy, and effortlessly

chic pantsuit with a feminine blouse. Try adding a little sparkle,

such as a statement necklace to take your polished look to the

Tis the Season to Be Grateful and...

BY CHARLIE MARTIN

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A GREAT TIME TO DO TWO VERY IMPORTANT THINGS: BE GRATEFUL AND EXPRESS YOUR GRATITUDE TO OTHERS. Work on a plan to make 2015 your best ever and share that plan with people who will support you and hold you accountable.

It’s easy to overlook how many things we all have to be grateful for, however, the holidays aren’t the only time we should think about showing gratitude. This is something we should strive to do every day. Haven’t been great at doing this daily? Now is a good time to catch up and create a new groove.

What do you have to be grateful for? Here are some categories to help you get started:

• Health. You notice it when you don’t have it, and being unhealthy gets in the way of almost everything you want to accomplish. Whatever level of health you do possess—celebrate it and be grateful.

• Family and Friends. Notice how much you are supported by them, thank them and give back fourfold. Think of all the ways others have helped you arrive to where you are and know they were glad to do it.

• Living in beautiful North County San Diego. It’s easy to take where you live for granted. It’s even easy to complain about the things that irritate you. Get up one day when you are not going to work, and make a list of all the positive things about where you live. Keep that list handy and notice just one great thing to be grateful for every day and

write it down in your journal.

• Opportunities. All you have to do to recognize your opportunities is ask yourself, “why not me?” Express your gratitude for the freedom you have to choose your pursuits. Celebrate your options. Be grateful for all the possibilities that are available to you.

• Helping Hand. Think of all the ways you can help others realize their dreams and step up and help them. The feeling you get from supporting and helping others is immeasurable! Be grateful for the opportunity.

This list of categories could go on forever but this should get you started this holiday season. Once you start down the path of recognizing, recording, and sharing daily what you are grateful for you may never stop! Perhaps you will get others started and maybe even start a movement throughout North County.

Now for the and….

Be sure to spend some time during the holiday season to think about 2015. I’m not talking about the New Year’s resolution kind of thinking I’m talking about deep, introspective thinking.

What do you want 2015 to be like for you? When and what will you need to do to start taking those small positive steps in order to make it happen?

Enjoy the positive spirits of the holiday season. Express your gratefulness and give a little thought to the possibilities that are available to you for 2015.

Estate Planning | 2015 RESOLUTION

BY BECCA FLETCHER

AS YOU ARE CONSIDERING YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2015, AND IF SO, WHY

NOT CONSIDER CREATING YOUR ESTATE PLAN AS PART OF YOUR RESOLUTION LIST?

Creating an estate plan is often something people put off, but in my experience, people who

DO create their estate plans feel a huge sense of relief! Because of the reduction in stress,

many report sleeping better at night and traveling with more confidence as a result of having

a plan in place. Establishing an estate plan with a revocable living trust and powers of attorney

for health care and financial decisions provides comfort knowing that you will avoid probate.

Furthermore, it ensures that someone is there to take care of your needs if you are ever

severely injured or incapacitated. Also, if you have young children, creating an estate plan

allows you to name the people who would take care of your children if you were not able to

do so yourself. This is such a huge issue and one you likely do not want to leave to the courts

to decide. Give yourself the peace of mind that comes with generating a plan for your loved

ones and your estate, and start your year off on the right foot!

A Great 2015 New Year’s Resolution

WHERE MEN ONCE DOMINATED FINANCIAL AFFAIRS, THE

GROWING PRESENCE OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE AND AS

HEADS OF HOUSEHOLD IS INTRODUCING A PARADIGM SHIFT.

Women are rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with as they take

increasing responsibility for their long-term goals and financial health.

Women investors face special challenges that make financial literacy

and advanced planning especially important. Women are more likely

to outlive their husbands, or be disproportionately affected by a

divorce, making long-term financial strategies especially critical.

This four part series was developed as a resource for women who are

seeking guidance on how to take control of their financial lives. We

hope that you will find it useful and we encourage you to take notes

as you go along and write down any questions you may have. In this

issue, we start with the foundation of woman as investors.

CHALLENGES WOMEN INVESTORS FACE

Women face particular challenges in investing and financial planning.

It’s important to acknowledge these challenges and explore them with

your family and trusted financial professional. Determining the right

solutions to your particular financial situation is critical to developing

a long-term strategy and pursuing a comfortable, secure retirement.

While every woman and every family is different, research shows that

American women face many challenges and this first challenge is

particularly difficult:

WOMEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO OUTLIVE THEIR HUSBANDS

Based on what research has found

about life expectancies, on average,

women outlive men. Losing a spouse is

heart wrenching, and in a family where

the husband managed the finances, a

widow may need to quickly take control

of family finances. Without planning,

this transition can add to an already

stressful situation and lead to costly

errors.

Families can prepare for this eventuality

by ensuring that both spouses are

involved in managing family finances.

However, research shows us that many

women are not as involved in their

financial planning as they should be. A 2011 report released by HSBC

showed that many women are not prepared for retirement; just 24% of

women in their fifties claimed to have a financial plan in place.i

The same report found the following:

• 65% of men make all or most of their household's financial

decisions without input from wives or other family members.

• 4 in 10 men claim sole decision-making responsibility in

retirement planning, compared to 25% of women.ii

Lack of involvement in financial affairs can put women in a highly

vulnerable position should anything happen to their husbands.

For more information on how to better prepare as a couple or as a

female investor, please contact Windus directly. In the next issue,

I will discuss more about how much more conservative woman are

in regards to investing in general while earning less than their male

counterparts.
