ARTICLE…

1) Lambs Wool is the name of a drink made from Apples, Sugar, Nutmeg & Beer and is 'enjoyed' in the apple producing counties of SW England on 12th Night (January 17 - which seems more like the 17th night to me but who am I to question such things) to ensure a good apple harvest. It also ensures a lot of good beer will be ruined.

2) The world record for shearing a sheep is held by an Australian, Hilton Barrett, who com-pletely sheared an entire sheep in 39.31 seconds. This tidbit of information will make you the hit of any cocktail party.

3) A product may be called wool if it uses a mixture of hair from any of the following sources: Alpaca, Llama, Camel, Cashmere, Mohair, Vicuna, Guanaco, that's right...Guanaco, Beaver, Yak, Otter and?.....Oh yeah, Sheep

4) Alpaca wool comes in 22 natural colors, the most of any wool producing animal.

5) "Thou shalt not wear a garment of diverse sorts, as of woolen and linen" Deuteronomy 22:11. It is written...No blends! Do you suppose that also applies to carpets of the 80/20 Wool/Nylon blend used in so many casinos? That's probably why Las Vegas is called Sin City.

6) The fleece of sheep has been used for clothing since the Stone Age.

FUN FACTS ABOUT WOOL ~INCASE YOU NEED RANDOM TRIVIA FOR THOSE HOIDAY GATHERINGS ;)

ARTICLE…

I will just answer that headline with a firm NO. This might come as a surprise but, Interior Design as a profession is rooted in something much deeper and practical. Yes, I know HGTV has become the rage for everyone interested in remodeling. What is better than a bunch of interior designers and contractors trying to out perform each other or show you how to do it. BUT, they all haven't told you the underlining of what good design was founded on and why it is so important. There are three main components about the roots of design which include safety, ergonomics and specifications. Interior design is a fairly new profession compared to architecture. In traveling to many countries with buildings dating back several thousand years we will see that there was a huge variable of how buildings were built in each country and the interiors were primarily done by the architects and artisans. If we read the history on each era on their interiors, they were connected to the wealthy society, craftsmen or artisans. Interior Design got its real start as a profession in the early 1900's and took anchor with curriculum and furniture. During the industrial rev-olution it took a turn to address commercial interiors as there was a need for safety and good planning for large corporations. It wasn't just about good taste anymore. It evolved into space planning and safety for numerous employees and became a requirement for someone practicing interior design. Specializing in the interior plan-ning alongside the architects started to evolve. The next transition as a profession rose out of a need to plan the workplace for function. There were famous architects like Frank Llyod Wright and large corporations like Herman Miller that evolved the old desk and chair with new office furniture concepts. With this there was a need to divide spaces without formal walls, I guess you could think of this as the beginning of the cubicle, but that took place much later. At first they just creatively used file cabinets, bookcases and plants to divide a large space. Space planning, lighting and acoustics came to the forefront. A formal change of the name decorator became designer for educated

professionals. There was also a very important part of the industry that happened during and after WWII. The term ergonomics became a part of interior design, which is an applied science of designing and studying how people relate to their environments for efficiency and safe-ty. That is why we have those crazy chairs with all the adjustments at our office desks, but much more. If you look at the kitchens in the 1950's, the counters were taller and the upper cabinets were place very high leaving

What?!! Interior Design isn't just about HGTV, Houzz and Pinterest?

valuable space unreachable without a short ladder. There is also a flow to each appliance that is measured with a triangular shape to increase efficiency. Yes, design was becoming connected to sciences and human studies which has continued to develop to this day.. The good stuff is in making design appealing which is what most of us relate to, but also attached is specifications that are the right application for the space in size, content and codes. There is an unbelievable amount of furniture, lighting, flooring, counters and much more to choose from. Anyone can go out there and buy just about anything from a store or online, but is it the right application. You have items in your home and office that have fire codes and also durability. There is also a lot of space planning mistakes that I have had people hire me to correct. Inappropriate sizes, materials or application can cost a lot of money if the items fails or it is so disappointing that it needs to be reworked. In commercial design there are specific codes that are in place to choose interior items for abrasive wear, fire, health, and much more. It takes many years to learn all the material applications and they are always changing with new design trends and products. Spaces have different requirements which are connected to occupancy, square footage and business type that a certified interior designer can guide their client through. There are many certifications, but the primary ones in California are CCIDC and the NCIDQ. Both of these tests are very difficult to pass involving expert design knowledge and codes. In conclusion, everyone expects a great experience at home, at play and in the workplace. It is proven that great spaces promote positive feelings of well being and proven productivity in the workplace. Interior designers are your insurance for both good planning and beauty. It should be more fun watching, browsing and pining your favorite design on HGTV, Houzz or Pinterest knowing that you now have some scholarly details. Most important is to have a space that is right and to avoid big monetary mistakes. It may seem like a luxury because of how you think about interior de-signers because of what has been promoted, but we are a value and every client deserves the best!!
