HOCKLEY NEWS Community Information

Communities Committee News in Brief

The Committee was formed this year to bring together the parish I councWs community work activities and events The second

meeting was held in September and focused on what is lacking in Hockley and how the council can improve our local facilities We have been asked to look into providing some outdoor adult exercise equipshyment which will be followed up to see whether there is a need and where it can best be installed If any resident has any experience in this area we would be pleased to hear from you The Hockley signs on the roads entering the village are in need of some urgent repair and updating and the committee is approaching Highways to find out whether we can replace these with gateway style signs These Signs have been used elsewhere in Essex and have been proven to be effecshytive in slowing down traffic travelling through residential areas Essex Police advise that communities should become more pro-active in supporting all aspects of community safety and the committee felt this could be of benefit in Hockley Our community events are ongoing with work starting on next years programme and it is encouraging to have your support

+- The first Schools Art Exhibition was held in March with our three primary schools displaying some excellent work at the Parish Hall We are hoping the children will be able to exhibit their art again next year and arrange for some musical performances as well

(gt Following the success of the Hockley Art Trail in June residents venues and artists have requested that we extend the event over two weekends in 2016

Arrangements for the 2015 Christmas Ughts SWitch-on are now

finalised and flyers are available from local shops the library and the parish office There wil l be a variety of stalls in Spa Road for you to look around along with performances on stage from local groups and schools We hope you will come along and enjoy the afternoons entertainment

New clTmbing equipment was installed at Plumberow Ploy Space

Despite some initial incidences of vandalism at the site the new play

equipment is now in use and we have received comments from families saying that they have

enjoyed using it during the summer The council is planning to update

and improve both Plumberow Mount and Laburnum Grove Play

Spaces over t he coming year

Council Committee and Working Group Reports

Environmental Committee Moryltwds Nature Reserve amp Plumberow Play Space

The Council has already made significant Improvements to the standard of the pathways within the Marylands Nature Reserve

This work was done with the aid of a CI F grant in 2013 and was used to improve the pathways in the reserve to a quality where they can be used by people with restricted mobility visual impairment or simshyply people wishing to bring a pushchair or buggy At the time this work was done the access from the road was adequate Since then the new pathway has made residents realise that they want the same standard of footway throughout the reserve The council has also commissioned some remedial work on a nearby culvert that has left the existing access in a poor state To resolve this the council wants to extend th is pathway to join-up with the street pavement and improve the final part of the pathway Although there is an extensive network of footpaths in the area there are few that can be accessed by those of restricted mobil ity Laying a new path to join the existing circular path to the start of the streetside pavement that will be of sufficient standard 0 take foot traffic and occasional vehicle access so that maintenance vehicles do not make the entrance impassible in inclement weather wil l be of further benefit to the area The Council considers that it is important to have an area that can be readily accessed from a meta lled road but that also allows the users to expeshyrience the calm of a rural aspect without a lot of off- road travell ing Providing easier access to the nature reserve will make Visiting a more pleasant experience for all Access will be improved but not at the price of losing the natural look and feel of the reserve

The Council wi ll have to precept some or all of the money in the coming year and may also approach other sources of funding for the additional money requ ired to complete the project

hristmas is almost here and the 2015 Christmas Lights Switch-on takes place on Saturday 21st

November in Spa Road The Committee is made up of 7 councillors and our Admin Assistant Work starts on the event in February each year to ensure all the forshymalities are in place ready for November paying parshyticular attention to the safety advisory guide which as anyone who has put on a public event knows is quite an involved process nowadays The office deals with

Hall during the afternoon We are fortunate to be able to work with our local traders who are suppomve of the event and very often put on their own activities during the afternoon

The fireworks which are sponsored by the traders have been a unique feature of Hockey Christmas Ught5 for several years and the display is carefully planned to coincide with the switch on The event has now become a big attracoon and we are delighted when we see everyone turning out to support us The members of the Committee would like to thank all the businesses

volunteers and emergency services

Please ote Spa Road will be closed to all traffic from lpm to 7pm on Surd V 2~ Nov mb r 2015
