1–2 Introducing the IPMI plug-in

IPMI Plug-in User Guide

OverviewThe IPMI plug-in enables IT Operations Analyzer to discover and monitor servers using Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI). IT Operations Analyzer provides a unified, web-based interface that displays the operational fields of monitored servers and their hardware components.

The IPMI plug-in consists of two packages:

• Plug-in for IPMI (Out-of-Band Monitoring)

• Plug-in for IPMI (In-Band Monitoring)

Figure 1-1 provides an overview of the IPMI plug-in architecture. Table 1-1 briefly describes the advantages and disadvantages of the IPMI plug-in packages.

Table 1-1: Plug-in package advantages and disadvantages

Figure 1-1: Overview of IPMI plug-in architecture

plug-in package Advantages Disadvantages

Plug-in for IPMI (Out-of-Band Monitoring)

Server hardware metrics can be monitored even when OS hangs or stops.

Two nodes are discovered andmonitored per targeted server hardware.

Two node licenses are requiredfor one server.

Plug-in for IPMI (In-Band Monitoring)

Provides additional hardware metrics on the server node.

Server hardware metrics cannotbe monitored when OS hangs orstops.

Introducing the IPMI plug-in 1–3

IPMI Plug-in User Guide

Plug-in for IPMI (Out-of-Band Monitoring)This IPMI plug-in package monitors the server hardware by accessing the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) on the monitored server. It enables IT Operations Analyzer to monitor server hardware, regardless of the state of the operating system. As long as IT Operations Analyzer is able to communicate with the BMC on the monitored server, this plug-in package continues to monitor the status of server hardware components.

This package consists of the following three plug-ins:

• IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller

• IPMI Node Association plug-in for Windows

• IPMI Node Association plug-in for Linux

IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller

This plug-in accesses the BMC using IPMI over a LAN and can monitor the server hardware, even if the operating system (OS) is down or is not running normally.

The BMC is part of the IPMI that is contained in the motherboard of the monitored server. The BMC is a specialized service processor that monitors the physical state of the server and its hardware components using sensors. The sensors can measure internal physical conditions such as temperature, voltages, and other status.

Each monitored server communicates with the management server over two nodes:

• One BMC node

• One OS-based server node

The server node is discovered by IT Operations Analyzer. The BMC node is discovered by IT Operations Analyzer through the IPMI Plug-in

IPMI Node Association plug-in for Windows

This plug-in associates a BMC node with a Windows server node after they are discovered by IT Operations Analyzer. The plug-in accesses the OS (Windows) running on the monitored server through WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to obtain this association information.

IPMI Node Association plug-in for Linux

This plug-in associates a BMC node with a Linux server node after they are discovered by IT Operations Analyzer. The plug-in accesses the OS (Linux) running on the monitored server through SSH to obtain the association information.

Note: The BMC node differs from a standard server node that is discovered and monitored by IT Operations Analyzer. For example, unlike a standard server node, the BMC node will not have information such as “Drive Capacity”, “Installed Software” or “IP network adapter” status displayed through the Monitoring Menu.

1–4 Introducing the IPMI plug-in

IPMI Plug-in User Guide

Plug-in for IPMI (In-Band Monitoring)This IPMI plug-in package monitors server hardware by accessing the OS running on the monitored server. It enables IT Operations Analyzer to monitor additional server hardware metrics.

This package consists of the following two plug-ins:

• IPMI plug-in for Windows

• IPMI plug-in for Linux

IPMI plug-in for WindowsThis plug-in monitors server hardware by accessing the OS (Windows) running on the monitored server through WMI. The WMI IPMI provider obtains server hardware information from the BMC on the monitored server.

IPMI plug-in for Linux This plug-in monitors server hardware by accessing the OS (Linux) running on the monitored server using IPMItool through SSH. IPMItool running on the monitored server accesses the BMC through IPMI driver (OpenIPMI) to obtain server hardware information.

Management server requirementsThe management server must be running IT Operations Analyzer version 2.5 or later to install the IPMI plug-in and to monitor IPMI nodes and components.

Refer to the management server setup task in the Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer Getting Started Guide: Device Configuration Supplement for operating system, disk space, memory, and processor speed requirements of the management server.

Monitored server requirementsThis section lists requirements for the monitored server.

IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management ControllerThe following lists the server requirements to ensure compatibility with the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard management Controller:

Requirements for the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller

Make sure the following requirements are met, before you configure the IPMI Plug-in for Baseboard management Controller:

• User must be logged on with administrator privileges.

• BMC must be enabled to run IPMI over LAN

After the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller requirements are satisfied, you must add a BMC administrator user as described in the following example through a Gateway Smart Console.

Example of configuring the BMC on the monitored server through the Gateway Smart Console

This section provides an example of how to add a new BMC administrator user and how to configure a LAN over IPMI for BMC. You may use either a web-based application or a CLI to configure the BMC. The following example uses the web-based Gateway Smart Console.

Adding a new BMC administrator user

To add a new BMC user using the Gateway Smart Console (as an example):

1. Open the browser and access the Gateway Smart Console by specifying the IP address of the BMC of the monitored server. Figure 2-1 shows the Login panel.

Figure 2-1: Gateway Smart Console Login panel

Note: Refer to your server documentation, as needed, to enable IPMI over LAN and to set up a user account and user privileges.

Understanding the limitations of the IPMI plug-inThis section discusses a few limitations of the IPMI plug-in.

BMC node and server node in one monitored serverIT Operations Analyzer views the IPMI monitored server and the BMC inside the server as two separate, but associated nodes. In other words, the two nodes are separately discovered and then monitored by IT Operations Analyzer. Consequently, one monitored server requires two individual licenses. See also Table 1-1 on page 1-2.

The combination of the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller and the IPMI Node Association plug-in for Windows or IPMI Node Association plug-in for Linux enables IT Operations Analyzer to show an association between the BMC node and the server node. Figure 4-10 also shows the server node as an “Associated Server Node” through the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller.

Plug-in for IPMI (Out-of-Band Monitoring) and Plug-in for IPMI (In-Band Monitoring) setup

If both the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller (in the Plug-in for IPMI (Out-of-Band Monitoring) and the IPMI plug-in for Windows or Linux (in the Plug-in for IPMI (In-Band Monitoring) are used to monitor the same server hardware, some components representing sensors or performance metrics may not be updated or may appear to be missing. Using this monitoring setup for the same server may produce inaccurate results. Therefore, it is not recommended that the IPMI plug-in for Baseboard Management Controller and the IPMI plug-in for Windows or Linux be used together to monitor the same server.
