HISTORY OF HARIPURHaripur was founded in 1822. Haripur means “Town of Hari”. Haripur was derived by the name of “Hari Singh Nalwa”.He was the Sikh General of Ranjit Singh Army.He was the Governor of Kashmir in 1822 to 1823.Haripur was built as a fortress surrounded by a wall which was 3.7 m thick and 15 m high and had only four opening gates.The population in 1901 was 5,578.

ADMINISTRATION Haripur District was tehsil of Abbottabad

District in 1992. Haripur District is divided into three Tehsils

which are sub-divided into a total of 44 Union Councils.

In the north and west of Haripur are Pashtun areas.

GEOGRAPHY Haripur District is situated at latitude 33° 44' to 34°

22‘ and longitude 72° 35' to 73° 15‘. It is 610m above the sea level.

Haripur District is expanded in Area of 1,725 km².

The estimated population of the Haripur district was 803000, according to 2005 census.

Agriculture is the major profession of the rural population.

Total agriculture land is 77370 acres.

HARIPUR BOUNDARIES Its boundaries are meet with Mardan and

ancient Gandara Civilization in the North West.

Abbottabad District in North East. Margallah hills of Islamabad in south east. Swat valley in the north-west. Attock and Rawalpindi lie on the south west

and south east, respectively.

POPULATION The estimated population of Haripur was 803,000. 12% of population lives in urban area. 88% of population lives in rural area. Hindko speakers are 68% of population, Pashtu is

28.9%, Punjabi is 1.8%, and Urdu is 0.5%. The average literacy rate for Haripur district is

53.7%. The provincial literacy rate in NWFP which is 35.2%. The female literacy rate is comparatively low at

37.4% than male literacy of 70.5%. Urban literacy rate is lower, 51.4%, than rural

literacy rate, 69.7%.

EDUCATION Haripur District has a Post Graduate College, which

is funded by the Government.

The city also has two Colleges for Girls which are also funded by the Government.

Haripur has 907 government primary schools, including 656 for boys and 251 for girls, in 2000–2001.
