District 9 Doubles Poplar Junction hosted the District 9 Doubles Tournament on 3/4/17. 7 teams participated and Bill Hunter and Jim Funke from Wood River won (again.)

Food Pantry The food pantry needs canned carrots, canned tomatoes,  applesauce  (no  glass  please),  fruit  cocktail, canned peaches, and toilet paper.

Moose Head  Our  new  recently  acquired Moose  head  has  been installed at the Corner Keg Pub. Past Governor Ken Kapp is pictured with the Moose head. Thank you, Kent Wiese, for allowing the installation.

Spring Stick Pick-Up We will be helping the Helvetia Sharpshooters pick up sticks on their grounds starting at 4:30 P.M. Lunch will be provided by the Sharpshooters BEFORE the 6:30 Board Meeting. Bring a bucket - we will have “picker uppers” to use.

Moose Night Out  Our bi-monthly Moose Night Out was held at Popeye’s Chop House on March 11. A fine group attended and the food was great - thanks to Moose Brother Dwight Rutz and his staff.

Clothing Collection A Success! Another successful clothing collection was held on March 4 at Langhauser’s Sheet Metal. A total of 4,747 lbs. of clothing was collected and donated to CYO to help students go to Space Camp. Thanks to Kenny Kapp for organizing, Brian and Karen Langhauser for hosting the event and providing beverages and snacks, and Dave Knebel who cleaned out his freezer for spring and prepared “country stew”. In addition, Operation Pantry Sweep netted 101 lbs. of food items for the Highland Food Pantry. Special thanks to future Moose Member, Trent Langhauser, for all his help.

  Steve (Wopper) & Karla Pacatte celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary also! Congratulations!

Our next Moose Night Out will be at Michael’s Restaurant on Saturday, May 13. Sign up sheet at all meetings and the Blues 501 Club or call Dan Kapp at 654-8500 or Steve Aagaard at 779-2368 to sign up.

From the GovernorGreetings Brothers, After several years serving as our Queen of Hearts and 50/50 Chairman, Rich Blake has decided to step down. Rich has worked tirelessly in the position and deserves special recognition for his commitment to the Lodge. If you see Rich, please take a second to thank him for his service. Moose Happy Hour Ethel’s hosted the Highland Moose Lodge Happy Hour on Thursday, February 16. Approximately 18 attended. Thanks to Susie Pfister and staff for their hospitality. The next Happy Hour will be at Tina’s in Jamestown on April 20.

Shooting Match We are holding our 10th Annual Shooting Match with the Highland Pistol Club on Sunday, April 2 at the Highland Pistol Club, starting at 12:30 P.M. We will need volunteers to  sell  food,  conduct  rifle,  shotgun,  and  trap  shooting, attendance drawings and hand out the meat prizes, etc. Contact Mike Elliott at 618-541-5034 with questions or if you would like to help.

Special Olympics -Young Athletes - April 21

We have volunteered to help with the Special Olympics at Highland Elementary School on Friday, April 21. We need a minimum of 14 volunteers for both shifts: 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Contact Lenny Gall (314-792-7061) or sign the sign up sheet at the meetings if you can help. They have over 100 students signed up!

Highland Moose Lodge 2479 John Kutz Memorial Scholarship

The John Kutz Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the Highland Moose Lodge #2479 in honor of all of the hard work and dedication of one of our fallen brothers. John Kutz was a valuable member of the community belonging to several different organizations. He joined the Moose Organization in June 1997 and became governor in 1998 and held several other offices within the lodge. He played a vital role in the formation of the Highland Moose Lodge and to the existence of the lodge as we know it today. The scholarship is open for applications between the months of February until April. The John Kutz Memorial Scholarship is for high school students in the 12th grade, which awards a single scholarship of $1000 who will be entering college in the fall semester after their high school graduation.Who is eligible? The scholarship is awarded to a high school student in 12th grade who lives in the Highland School District or has an immediate family member that belongs to the Highland Moose Lodge and demonstrates academic achievement of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale at the time of submission and exemplary community service as well as school activities and have taken part in Moose Lodge events.Where can I get an application? The scholarship application is available through your school guidance counselor or by contacting Kevin Kruse at 531-7208..When is the application deadline? The scholarship application must be in the hands of the Moose Lodge administrator by the April 10. Please do not wait to send the scholarship application for it might get slowed down by the mail.What is the scholarship amount? $1000 award for one-year, non-renewable. One scholarship will be award per year.How may the funds be used? The award is for one year of full-time college study at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college, university, or technical/vocational school in the United States. The money must be used for tuition in the fall term after high school, as the check will be made out to their chosen college but mailed to the student’s home.

EligibilityApplicants must:* Be a student in the Highland Community School District No. 5 or have

an immediate family member that is a member of the Highland Moose Lodge # 2479

* Have a minimum cumulative high school grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), at the time of application submission.

* Demonstrate commitment to and involvement in community volunteer service or work service.

* Be planning to enter a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Applicants must enroll no later than the fall semester following high school graduation.

Award Criteria Selection of recipients will be based on solid academic performance and exemplary community volunteer service or work experience. Consideration may also be given to participation and leadership in school activities. Financial need is not considered. Awards are for undergraduate study only and are awarded without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender or disability. Awards are one-time only and are not renewable.Application Procedure Applicants will have to gather the following information that will be necessary for the application:* List of student’s community volunteer service, work experience and

participation in school activities* Student’s high school transcripts of grades* High school address and phone number* Principal’s NameApplicants are solely responsible for submitting all information necessary for the application process. The Highland Moose Lodge will email acknowledgement of receipt of all submitted applications and reserves the right not to process applications found to be incomplete as of the application deadline.

Queen of Hearts (new rules as of 2/27/17)

ONLY HIGHLAND MOOSE MEMBERS MAY PLAY. YOU MUST BE A MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING (PAID UP DUES) TO COLLECT.A standard 52 card deck plus two (2) Jokers will be used making it a 54 card raffle.

Each card will be placed in brown/yellow envelope and sealed.  1. Drawing to be held on Meeting Nights (2nd & 4th Mondays at 7:30 P.M.) or as announced for special events (such as Christmas Party, 

etc.) 2. If your entry is pulled, and you are present and you pull the “Queen of Hearts”, you will win 80% of the pot. Remainder will be put in

next pot. 3. If your entry is pulled and you are not present and the “Queen of Hearts” is picked, you will win 40% of the pot. Remainder will be

put in next pot.  4. Any face card other than the “Queen of Hearts” (Jacks, Queens or Kings) will win $20 if present, $10 if not present. 5. The “Joker” will pay $100 if present, $50 if not. 6. Entries are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. No limit on how many you buy. Non-winning entries drawn will be placed back in the barrel. 7. Once the Queen of Hearts is drawn, the game will be reset. 8. Once a card is pulled from the deck, it does not go back in until after the game is reset. 9. Any entry not legible will be destroyed.10. Any entry not eligible (dues not current) will be discarded and another entry drawn.11. Drawing held on 4th Mondays only and name drawn with Member present will have his next year’s dues paid (Member and Legion 

dues). Limit of one per calendar year or until Queen of Hearts is drawn.12. Maximum jackpot of $3,500.00. If maximum is reached, another raffle jackpot will be started with the balance from the original raffle 

to be added to the next jackpot and so on.
