Our high performance GRP composite door combines superior traditional wood aesthetics with low maintenance technology. GRP doors will not warp, crack, splinter, dent or rust, yet retain the warmth and traditional look of real wood without the disadvantages.

Birtley GRp doors are all constructed by bonding high impact fibreglass (GRp) outer skins to composite rails surrounding an inner core of highly thermally efficient insulating foam (CFC free). The inner core also acts as a superior sound proofing agent.

Birtley GRp doors are low maintenance, all that’s required is an occasional wipe down with a soapy cloth and they will never need painting.

Available in different designs, a choice of attractive colours and a range of decorative glass styles adds to the overall kerb appeal.

The Building Regulations Approved Document M

In order to comply with Building Regulations our thresholds can meet the following:

Low Threshold / Wheelchair Access Thresholds

The regulation requires that a wheelchair must not have to negotiate a vertical step of more than 15mm.

This does not necessarily mean that a threshold must be less than 15mm in overall height. The threshold may be higher as long as it incorporates a ramped section of less than 15º angle. Compliance to part M is dependant on the design of the threshold and the installation method.

Install Door Assembly into Existing Opening

• ensure opening is the correct size (nominal 10mm larger than frame), square and plumb and the structural cill is level.

• Maintain any damp proof membrane/course below door opening.

• Apply sealant to the floor slab and to the underside of the cill or threshold (where applicable).

• Centre the assembly in the opening, recessing the frame from the facade as required.

• With the hinge side of the threshold or the hinge jamb supported on a packer if necessary, place full depth non-compressible packers between the wall and the jambs at hinge and keep locations, making sure the assembly is square, plumb and the jambs are held rigidly.

• Fix the hinge jamb to the wall at the maximum vertical spacing shown (Frame Fixings 7.5mm x 100-120mm are recommended for masonry). Secure at top and bottom fixing first.

• ensure fixings are located into masonry units or timber framing. Full depth non-compressible packers must be used at fixing positions to prevent distortion of frames.

• Cavity battens on timber frame buildings must provide adequate structural support to door frames.

• Re-check that the frame is plumb and square and adjust the packers between the lock jamb and the wall if necessary.

• Starting at the bottom, fix the lock jamb to the wall through the rebate.

• After fixing at the bottom, check that the frame has not twisted by trying the door for contact with the compression weather-strip. Adjust jamb position if required. Fix at remaining positions.

• ensure underside of cill or threshold is fully supported and sealed.

• For door sets over 1050mm wide the head must be levelled and fixed.

Building-in Door Assembly

• locate assembly and plumb, level and brace with suitable supports.

• Use four framing anchors per jamb at maximum vertical spacing shown to build into adjacent masonry bed joints.

• If door is removed from frame, code paired door and frame for refitting and carefully store door on edge to avoid damaging weather-strip.

• Allow masonry to set before removing braces or opening door.

AnCeWeatherproofing

• Apply sealant to the underside and ends of threshold strip and fix securely to level structure.

• ensure bottom weather-strip seal of door contacts threshold strip.

• Apply a suitable sealant around the perimeter of the door frame.

Lock Adjustment

• The Multipoint lock bolts or hooks are used to draw the door leaf onto the external gaskets thus creating a weather seal.

• The centre keep for the latch should be set to hold the door flush with the inner face of the frame. The keeps for the hooks or dead bolts are then adjusted to hold the door corners flush with the inner face of the frame.

• please note – the hooks or dead bolts of the multipoint lock must be in compression with the inner edge of the pocket keep – failure to ensure this happens WIll allow the door to move away from the sealing gaskets.

• It is important to ensure the Centre Keep for the latch is only set to allow the door to become flush with the inner face of the outer frame and not any tighter as this could cause the door to simulate bowing.

• When the door is closed the hooks of the multipoint lock should be thrown throughout the day. Use of the centre keep only may result in the top and bottom of the door being in unsupported tension and eventually standing proud of the inner face of the frame – this can cause misalignment of bolts with the keeps making engagement of the lock become stiff.

Hardware

• ensure handles and optional chains, knockers and numbers are installed using the fixings provided.

• For nHBC approval use alternative split spindle for the handle assembly.

• Where required rain deflector plates should be fixed to clear thresholds.

Decoration of Unfinished Steel and GRP Doors

• The primer coating of unfinished steel doors should be lightly sanded with fine abrasive paper.

• Clean off all dust and dirt with detergent and water and allow to dry.

• The faces of commodity GRp doors can be painted or stained directly. The bare edges of doors should be primed prior to painting.

• Apply paint to the door and frames in accordance with the paint manufacturer’s instructions. Do not paint the weather-strip.

• ensure the paint is completely dry before closing the door to avoid marking the weather-strip.

• Small dents and scratches can easily be repaired using a fibreglass plastic filler (similar to that used for car body repair) and repainting.

Maintenance

• Fittings on Birtley doors are coated with hardwearing clear lacquer to prevent tarnishing and discolouring.

• To prolong the life of the furniture, glass and paint finish to the door, regular dusting with a soft cloth, supplemented by occasional washing with warm soapy water is recommended. In no circumstances should metal polishes, abrasive cleaners, chemicals or other cleaning solvents be used as this will remove the protective lacquer coating.

• lubricate moving mechanisms with a light oil after installation and at least once a year.

• If door is removed from frame, store on edge to avoid damaging weather-strip.
