Resident Spotlight

Jan Worley Jan Worley, Boston born and bred, was introduced to her husband Floyd by her sister, after he asked, “Who is that? I’m going to marry her!” After marrying, they left Boston in 1968 and moved to 8 states where she oversaw the building of 7 new homes. As a corporate wife she has traveled to every major city in the United States as well as Asia, Bermuda and France. Jan enjoyed the challenge of a new home, meeting new people, and has friends all over the country who she keeps in touch with. They spent 10 years in Edwardsville, Illinois where her daughter attended SIUE and met and married a St. Louis native. After Floyd retired in 2000, they moved to Florida. While commuting back and forth to see her daughter’s family which now included 2 grandsons, her daughter introduced her to HHR.

After Floyd’s death in 2010, Jan bought a villa at HHR and remodeled it. But after seeing the new display homes in 2014, she bought a lot, made all the choices for the new house in just two weeks, then returned to Florida to pack up and sell her home. In July 2015 on her birthday, she moved into her HHR home.

Because of Floyd’s love of golf, they played often and were able to attend four Master’s Tournaments. Jan plays golf with the Lady Hawks and the Friday night league. She also enjoys hosting a table at the Christmas Tea, decorating her home for the holidays, and attending the dress up parties. She entered both her golf cart and convertible in the Fourth of July parade this year, with help driving from her 16 year old grandson. HHR Book Club meeting - Tuesday, December 11 at 1:00 in the library room. The book this time is "The Last Days of Darkness" by Graham Moore. "In The Last Days of Darkness, Graham Moore takes us back to the dawn of light - electric light -and the invention of the light bulb - into a world of invention and skullduggery, popu-lated by the likes of Edison, Westinghouse, Tesla and the novel's hero, a young lawyer named Paul Cravath. It's part legal thriller, part tour of a magical time - the age of wonder - and once you've finished it, you'll find it hard to return to the world of now. Readers are likely to walk away from the book feeling as informed as they are entertained." If you want to join in the discussion on December 11, there are several copies of the book in the clubhouse office for check-out. Please - only take a book if you plan to attend the discussion. These book kits that we obtain from the county library from time to time are for Book Club members and new Book Club participants only.

DOG REMINDER Much has been said over the years about being a respectful neighbor when it comes to dog ownership. Everyone loves their pet and wants to spend time with them outdoors. Pets must ALWAYS be on a leash and take extra steps to control a pet that may be aggressive. And it is a given, but do not let your pet wonder on other residents’ lawns when taking them for a walk and properly dispose of pet waste!

Class #3—This class will be specifically about using the manual settings on a DSLR camera. Discussed and demon-

strated will be concepts related to shutter speed, aperture pri-ority, white balance, ISO settings, depth of field, exposure

compensation etc. FREE— Sign up on the bulletin board.

Boy Scouts Annual Scouting for Food Campaign is coming. They drop off the bags on 11/10 & pick up food donation

bags on 11/17. Please give generously. Thanks to Larry Knopfel for organizing all of the HHR donations.

Class #4—Will be a demonstration and instruction on how to create a customized Photobook from your personal

photos. Please sign up on the bulletin board.

3rd Annual Breast Cancer Benefit Thanks to the generosity of the ladies of HHR and some very special gentlemen, this year’s event raised over $8,000 to help support Gateway to Hope, a breast cancer lifeline. This is an incredible 50% increase over last year’s donation. That success is attributed to the 65 golfers and 48 ladies who attended the lunch, as well as the numerous HHR residents, their family, and friends, who generously donat-ed their time and efforts, along with the wonderful items for the 50 gift baskets and 10 silent auction items. The committee extends a heartfelt thank you for the tremendous support.

HHR Holiday Traditions HHR has several long standing and some new traditions to recognize the upcoming holidays. We hope you will participate. Feel free to make suggestions for new traditions too!

Friendsgiving—The Thanksgiving Dinner you share with your HHR Friends. 11/24. See the flyer for more details. Holiday Decorating—11/27 9:30 am—Come help us decorate the clubhouse. Each new HHR family is invited to hang an ornament on our tree (anytime during the holiday season). We rec-ommend a non-breakable ornament with your family name and the year you moved to HHR written on the ornament. This year, we are in special need of some strong folks to help us with our huge tree.

Holiday Luminaries On Christmas Eve at 4:30 pm, residents put out Luminaries to light up the neighborhood. The luminaries are made from milk jugs. More details will follow in the December Putterings, but you can start saving your gallon milk jugs now. We recommend special candles that can be purchased at the clubhouse for $1 each, beginning December 1.

Next meeting on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 2 P.M. Location: HHR Clubhouse computer room Presentation: Google Strategies for Genealogy A review of what was presented at the St. Louis Genealogical Society Fall Speaker Series on 20 October. Please let Bill Scroggin ([email protected]) know if there is a subject of interest to you for upcoming meetings or if you would like one-on-one assistance. For new members or those who have missed some of the meetings, please go to the HHR Club webpage for the Genealogy Club to view past presentations.

ADVISORY BOARD REPORT October 16, 2018 The Financial Report was discussed and approved to be posted on the website. We have hired an electrician to deal with several electrical problems around the clubhouse and other places. We still haven’t found a handyman. The kitchen and craft room floors were stripped and waxed on Oct. 8th. The tennis courts were power washed and had minor repairs Oct. 10-11th. A contract was signed with Greenwood Group to do additional landscaping at the entrance on the golf course side later this fall. An update was given on the golf budget for next year and we approved a letter that was to go out to the residents on the 16th regarding 2019 membership rates. Annual memberships for residents will increase 3% and for outsiders it will be 8%. Bids for the lake aeration were considered and six diffusers will be installed this fall weather permitting. Only the cost of the labor will be billed in 2018 and the rest of the project cost is allocated in the 2019 budget and will be billed after the first of the year. The quotes for pool repairs were reviewed and will be put in the 2019 budget. These include by-pass piping for the heater and repairs on the cracked and leaking skimmer baskets. The shuffleboard court will be taken up for the winter soon. Jeff Ford has volunteered to assist with this task. Rebuilding 4 sand traps will be put in the 2019 budget and work will hopefully start late this fall. The work will be done on the bunkers of holes #2, #3, #6 and #7. The Town Hall meeting will be Monday, December 10th. The Advisor election will be at that time. A representative from our Lombardo board will be here to give a report and answer questions. After spending many hours working on the 2019 budget it was decided that no assessment increase would be necessary for next year. The next meeting will be November 20th at 10:00am.

ADVISORS CORNER Linda Bird, Jim Biglin, John Shaal

There is renewed interest in starting up "The Stories of Your Life" writing group again this year. Many HHR residents have already written beautiful stories about events in their lives - stories they want to leave for their children, grandchildren, and future ancestors - stories that reveal a deeper understanding of the author through experiences never shared until now. If this sounds interesting to you - if you'd like to know more about the process - come to an introductory meeting on November 21st at 11:00 in the craft room. We'll tell you all about what we do and share some stories from past writers. Please sign up on the bulletin board at the clubhouse. If you have specific questions before the meeting, you can call Stephanie Hempel (636 561 4016) or Tom Kraft (636 265 0083)
