Dear 4‐H Families and Friends, The 4‐H year is now in full swing and before you know it, warmer weather 

will bring fair season right along with it. General Show projects must be 

signed up for by March 1st in 4‐H online. These projects roll over from last 

year, but you may want to add a few. Consider some of the new project 

areas! I also want to remind you that to show at the fair, you must give a talk 

or demonstra on and a end at least 4 mee ngs. Check with your club leader 

for addi onal club requirements and to see how many mee ngs you have 

a ended.  

February is a busy month for those of you in livestock projects! Don’t forget 

to weigh in your steers, take the YQCA training, and make sure you know the 

ownership deadlines for livestock! Keep an eye out for the many workshops 

soon to be offered! A great way to keep up with the news about workshops 

being hosted is by liking your local 4‐H Facebook page. Don’t worry, we will 

s ll write about them in your monthly newsle er!

Check out these state contests STATE 4‐H DAIRY QUIZ BOWL February 29 | East Peoria | 11 AM – 5 PM Register at your county Extension office before February 14. Be the first to buzz in with the answers to ques ons all about the dairy ca le industry. You’ll have fun compe ng with friends as teams of four who share your interest in dairy ca le. Compe ng as an individual? No worries, we’ll find a partner for you. Register the day of the event prior to the 11:30 kick off test. The contest will be held at the Embassy Suites, East Peoria Riverfront Hotel & Conference Center, 100 Conference Center Drive, East Peoria. The State 4‐H Dairy Quiz Bowl team will be selected from the eligible 4‐H members (15‐18) par cipa ng at this state contest. Learn more online @ go.illinois.edu/4Hdairy.  

STATE 4‐H HORSE JUDGING CONTEST February 29 | 11 AM Black Hawk College | Galva, IL Registra on cards must be signed by Extension staff In 4‐H, learning about horses means much more than learning to ride. The State 4‐H Horse Judging Contest will be held Saturday, February 29 at Black Hawk College. Registra on begins at 11 AM, with the contest following at noon. Youth will judge six classes of horses, at least two being halter classes. Youth 14 years of age and older may also choose to par cipate in oral reasons following the classes. For those not par cipa ng in the oral reasons class, one ques on class will be required. Learn more online @ go.illinois.edu/4Hhorsejudging.  

STATE 4‐H HORSE HIPPOLOGY CONTEST April 18 | 8 AM David Kinley Hall | University of Illinois at Urbana‐Champaign You must pre‐qualify at the regional contest to be held April 4 at Knoxville High School.  

Take your love of horses to a new level and compete in the State 4‐H Hippology Contest. There are several phases in this horse‐related contest: wri en test, horse judging, sta on iden fica on, and problem solving. Cost is $5 per  person. Learn more @ go.illinois.edu/4Hhippology.  

STATE 4‐H HORSE BOWL CONTEST April 19 | 8 AM Educa on Building | University of Illinois, Urbana‐Champaign You must pre‐qualify at the regional contest to be held April 4 at Knoxville High School.  There are several ways to learn about horses, and you don’t even need a horse! This contest operates very similar to scholas c bowls at school, with all the ques ons related to the horse industry! Cost is $5 per entry or $25 per team. Learn more @ go.illinois.edu/4Hhorsebowl.

 Speak up for 4‐H February 1 | 9 AM – 3 PM | Mt. Vernon March 21 | 9 AM – 3 PM | Sterling Register @ go.illinois.edu/sfi4H | Cost $12 We’re looking for 4‐H members interested in spreading the great news about 4‐H. If you’re at least 14, you can join the Speaking for Illinois 4‐H team. Two trainings are available:  Saturday February 1 at the Jefferson County Extension Office in Mt. Vernon  Saturday, March 21 at the Whiteside County Extension Office in Sterling  

The day‐long training, provided by the Illinois State 4‐H Youth Leadership Team, gives you the chance to explore your own 4‐H history and why you are involved, then put that story into words. You’ll learn the best ways to approach  donors, civic groups, elected officials, and others to talk about 4‐H. Once you’re trained, you’ll receive an invita on to be a part of our Legisla ve Connec on events at the State Capitol.

Help sew new curtains for camp! March 21 | 9 AM – 4 PM | 4‐H Memorial Camp @ Mon cello Register online @ go.illinois.edu/4Hsewing 4‐H Memorial Camp needs new cabin curtains … LOTS OF THEM! If you know how to sew and have taken at least one year of 4‐H sewing, we have a great community service project that is fun and will make a big difference! We need 50 youth volunteers to help cut, pin, sew, and hang 126 curtains in the log cabins used by 1,500 campers each summer. The camp will provide all the materials, pa erns, and lunch! We have a few sewing machines available, but more are needed. Members may bring one parent or guardian to help. Come help and enjoy the perfect camp lunch of hot dogs, baked beans, veggies, chips, and cookies!  

Let’s go fishing May 2 – 3 | 4‐H Memorial Camp, Mon cello Learn more @ go.illinois.edu/4Hfishcamp With the lake fully stocked, 4‐H Fish Camp is back at 4‐H Memorial Camp near Mon cello. Fishing begins at 10 a.m. Sat‐urday, May 2 and lasts un l 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Learn how to catch largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel ca ish. Learn about fishing  ps, lures, bait, equipment, knots, fish behavior, fish management, and fish cleaning. Each group registered will be assigned their own log cabin for lodging with single bunks. Par cipants must bring their own bedding and toiletries.  

A fee of $50 per person covers the complete program, lodging, boat, bait, and three buffet meals, including Saturday lunch and supper and a Sunday brunch. You’ll also have fresh fish fillets to take home! Pre‐registra on and payment is required.  To register, contact 4‐H Memorial Camp at (217) 762‐2741 or send an email to Curt Sinclair at sinclair@illinois.edu.  

Nothing beats summer at 4‐H Memorial Camp 5 weeks to choose: Learn more and register online @ go.illinois.edu/4Hcamp Camping at 4‐H Memorial Camp will open February 3. Spaces fill up immediately, so save the date on your calendar! There are 5 weeks of youth camp this year. Cost is $250 for 4‐H members or $290 for youth not yet in 4‐H. The fee in‐cludes a camp t‐shirt and $15 in credit at the Trading Post. No extra cash is needed for camp! Remember the ask your program coordinator about how to qualify for a par al fee scholarship!  Week 1: June 2‐6  Week 2: June 7‐11  Week 3: June 14‐18  Week 4: July 5‐9  Week 5: July 26‐30

Change lives, be a 4‐H camp counselor 4‐H Memorial Camp is now accep ng applica ons for summer camp employment. We are looking for energe c,  responsible individuals to serve as counselors and program staff for 6 weeks of summer camp. We will train you for a week before the campers arrive. You’ll get valuable experience working with young people while you have a great summer. We are also looking for people with lifeguard cer fica ons, outdoor educa on programming experience, and arts/cra s teaching experience. Applica on paperwork can be found at 4h.extension.illinois.edu/programs/camping/4‐h‐memorial‐camp. Come be a mentor to 1500 campers while crea ng memories and friendships that last a life me.

Be a true leader in service April 25 | Na onwide Join 4‐H members and clubs across Illinois and the na on on Saturday, April 25 as part of True Leaders in Service! 4‐H clubs serve their communi es all year long however the month of April has been selected as a  me for ALL 4‐H clubs to join together to roll up their sleeves in service to local communi es. This could mean helping a person or family in need doing yard work or minor home repairs, cleaning up streets or parks, plan ng trees or gardens,  

suppor ng your local food pantry or any other project that supports a local need.   

Make your plans now on how you’ll help others. Find resources @ go.illinois.edu/4Hdayofservice. Later in 2020, you can register your projects there! The goal of the 4‐H True Leaders in Service day is to encourage 4‐H members in every county to make a posi ve difference. Service projects can be done by individuals, by 4‐H clubs, or as a countywide service project. No ma er what the project is, this will be a day to make a difference.  By registering your project, you 

can count this as a na onal event on your award applica on!  

Host an interna onal youth this summer Host a Japanese or South Korean youth this summer through States’ 4‐H Interna onal! Expand your family’s cultural understanding, learn about new foods and customs, and possibly learn a new lan‐guage all while sharing your own. Your children will build lifelong friendships and will gain new per‐spec ves on their own country, too! Families are needed for July 22 through August 17.  

 

Be aware:  Families hos ng a youth must have a child the same gender and approximate age (12‐18) as the incoming youth.   Youth must have a separate bed; a separate room is not required.   Host family selec on is dependent on comple on of an applica on and screening process, as well as student

Don’t be chicken; hop on over February 8 | 9 to 11 AM | Effingham County Fairgrounds, Altamont Register by February 7 @ go.illinois.edu/LATclinic Learn to show poultry and rabbits from one of the leading Illinois 4‐H judges, Mike Claypool. The workshop is open to any 4‐H members, and there is no cost. You can even bring your chicken or rabbit with you to get health and showing advice. The workshop is sponsored by the Illinois State 4‐H Livestock Ambassador Team.  

 

 

 

Look for these changes at the Illinois State Fair With the  ming of the state fair and the an cipated start of school, the 4‐H General Project Show at the state fair has been condensed to three days: Aug. 14, 15, and 16.  (Henderson and Warren dates are Sunday the 16th.)  Exhibits must be in place by 9:30 AM and remain on display un l 4 PM. (new release  me)  The awards will include Champion Medals for the highest score in each project class and Reserve Medals for the 

second highest score in each class. Cash premiums from the state will be paid to the medal winners. Innova on Awards will be given to exhibits judges find inspiring, innova ve, or crea ve and are not based on scores. Medal winners cannot receive the innova on award in 2020. 

New projects at the state fair include: Child Development, Leather, Sports Nutri on, Family Heritage, and Shoo ng Sports

The State 4‐H Public Speaking Contest will be held at the same  me as the state fair. Youth can compete in a speech and also bring a project to the General Project Show. Youth must be selected in their county contest to advance and will speak the same day as their county exhibit day.  

Ewe lambs are now eligible for the premier show.  Steers advancing to state fair must be weighed by Feb. 29.  The junior poultry show begins Monday, Aug. 17.  The State 4‐H Poultry Judging Contest will be held at the state fair on Monday, Aug. 17.  The junior rabbit show begins Saturday, Aug. 22.  Check out all the livestock ownership deadlines online @ go.illinois.edu/4Hlivestock. !   

How strong is your 4‐H family spirit? The Illinois 4‐H Founda on welcomes nomina ons for the 2020 4‐H Family Spirit Award. The  Illinois 4‐H Family Spirit Award recognizes a family with at least three genera ons and at least 15 different family members (including in‐laws) that have either been 4‐H members, leaders, or  volunteers with at least 100 cumula ve years of 4‐H membership or volunteerism represented with‐

in the family. Selec on is based on the total number of family members with 4‐H connec ons, the total number of years of 4‐H involvement, the diversity of experiences and recogni ons earned by the 4‐H  members, and the collec ve impact that family members have made as advocates of their county and state  4‐H programs. On‐line applica ons are available at: 4hfounda on.illinois.edu/content/family‐spirit‐award.  Nomina ons are due May 1.

Taking an animal project? READ THIS! For members enrolled in dairy ca le, beef ca le, swine, sheep, and goats: The YQCA is a new livestock quality assurance program that is replacing PQA which no longer exists. All 4‐H ex‐

hibitors of these animals will be required to cer fy in the YQCA program each year star ng for the 2020 show season. A end either a face to face class or cer fy on‐line via the website yqca.org  The YQCA program is for youth ages 8‐21. The online version is broken into age divisions as follows: juniors 8‐11, intermediate 12‐14,   senior 15‐18, and young adults 19‐21. This cer fica on is needed each year with test out op ons of 1‐3 years. Youth exhibi ng swine at the Illinois State Fair and 4‐H fairs are no longer required to be PQA plus cer fied. The es mated cost for the face‐to‐face training will be $3 and $12 for the online version.

For members enrolled in horses, rabbits, poultry, dogs, and cats: The Quality Assurance and Ethics training is required for youth in horses, rabbits, poultry, dogs and cats. You only 

need to take it once in your life me. Those who don’t complete the training will be removed from the animal science project and will not be eligible to exhibit at county fairs. The website is open year round @ web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/. NOTE: Youth must be logged on to a computer for this program, either a  

       desktop or laptop; not an iPad or iPhone.

Project Highlight: Leadership By Shelby Carlson Leadership isn’t just about having a having a fancy office or  tle and being the one in charge, it is so much more! It is building rela onships, being a good role model, and helping others. Leaders build rela onships, serve as a good role model, and help others. Leaders influence and support others in a posi ve manner for a shared goal. Leaders aren't just elected. Learning about yourself and how you work with others is a key part of developing leader‐ship skills.   In the leadership project, you may learn about communica on and making decisions, develop a self‐image, explore leadership styles, and explore community resources. It’s nearly impossible to list a career leadership doesn’t relate to! You could be a teacher, a construc on worker, a business person, a farmer, and more. The possibili es are endless when it comes to leadership.  Pro Tip from Lisa who has judged leadership at the State Fair: Taking a leadership project is one of the best ways to keep track of experiences for 4‐H award applica ons and scholarships!   

4‐H Steer Weigh‐In Scheduled If you are showing steer at the County 4‐H Show or going to the State Fair, please plan to weigh‐in at: Henderson Coun‐ty Fairgrounds—Saturday, February 1st from 8 am –10 am, Abingdon Fes val Grounds—Saturday, February 8th from 8 am –9:30 am, Mike Huston Farm—Monday, February, 17th from 9 am to 11 am  Please call the Extension office to specify how many you plan to  weigh‐in and with a number to call in case of bad weather. We would like to remind members that weigh‐in should be done in the county of your enrollment.   

Founda on Hall of Fame ceremony set The Illinois 4‐H Founda on will honor one volunteer leader from each county at a ceremony during the Illinois State Fair. The celebra on begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18 as part of Ag Day at the fair right before the Sale of Champions ac vi es begin. Supporters and families of the recipients are welcome to a end. If you know of anyone from Hender‐son or Warren County who you think should receive this award please email McCala @mmmille@illinois.edu or call the Henderson office at 924‐1163 or the Warren office at 734‐5161.  

Our Day at the State Fair Mark your calendars Henderson and Warren County’s day to exhibit General Show projects at the Illinois State Fair is Sunday , August 16. To help plan ahead we are sharing that parking pass for the State Fair will NOT be available to pur‐chase ahead of  me in our offices. This is to help mainstream the parking process on the fairgrounds.

Helpful Tips for 1st year 4‐H families Is it possible to be both excited and confused at the same  me? Yes, just ask any 1st year 4‐H parent. That is why we have put together a few helpful  ps to get you thru your 1st year.   Make sure to review the projects your kiddos are signed up for on il.4honline.com. There is s ll  me to enroll for 

General show projects (basically anything non livestock). You have un l March 1 to add General Show projects.   Once you get your 4‐H Fair Book, hold it in your hands and say out loud “this is my fair book, there are many like it, 

but this one is mine.” Sounds a bit silly but by saying it, you are allowing yourself to highlight, star, mark up the pages within. We encourage families to do this so that they can remember what projects their youth are signed up for and this is a great way to make looking up project details and fair dates quicker.  

Is your kiddo signed up for a livestock project? If yes, make sure they have completed their QAEC and or YQCA. De‐tails are on page 5.  

Fair entries will be completed online star ng April 1. You will have un l June 8 to complete them.  

□  This is when you choose exactly what projects you want to take to the 4‐H Fair. Please know that you by no means need to take everything that you signed up for. Choose projects that the 4‐H member is most excit‐ed about and that you know you have  me to complete.  

Know that your friendly neighborhood 4‐H Program Coordinator, McCala Crawford, and the rest of the Extension Office are here to help you with fair entries. We are more than happy to make arrangements for 1 on 1, to help you complete the entries or help answer ques ons about project details.  

Remember that everyone in your club or Extension office has had a 1st year in 4‐H and are more than happy to help you with yours. Feel free to ask your 4‐H Club leader, officer team, fellow members and other 4‐H families you know any ques ons too.  

Lastly take a deep breath you are doing great! You are more than half way thru your 1st year. The second year will be a walk in the park.

Welding Workshop Ages 8 to 18 are invited to a end a Welding Workshop at the Carl Sandburg College Center for Manufacturing  Excellence. Workshop dates are April 10 and June 6. Cloverbud Pain ng Workshop We are teaming up with the Cra y Coop, LLC in Macomb, IL for a fun morning of crea ng fun works of art. Youth will be able to paint one of three pre selected ceramic pieces that they will be able to keep forever. This workshop is only open to 4‐H Cloverbud members in Henderson, Knox, McDonough, and Warren coun es. Space is limited. Details and registra on are avaible at:   h ps://web.extension.illinois.edu/hkmw/

Share‐The‐Fun The Unit 4‐H Federa ons are offering a fun event! Get your club skits ready! We are bringing back Share 

the Fun and Performing Arts Showcase! The event will start at 6 PM on Saturday, April 18 in the Knoxville High School Auditorium

in Knoxville, IL. Get ready to display your skits and talents for the community! This year’s theme is “Head, Heart, Hands, Health.” 

Club skits are not to exceed 5 minutes and will compete for first, second, and third place. Judges will look for crea vity and use of 

the theme. Individual talents are not to exceed 3 minutes and will also compete for first, second, and third place. In addi on, all 

entries will compete for the coveted "Crowd Pleaser" award which will be chosen by audience members via monetary dona ons. 

Please register by April 14 to ensure your spot and to be listed in the program. Only one person needs to register their club skit.

Shoo ng Sports volunteers needed Many young people don’t have someone to show them how to safely handle a firearm or bow. Think back to the per‐son who taught you to shoot. The Illinois 4‐H program needs adults willing to serve as mentors and share their passion of shoo ng sports. Here’s what you need to do:  Contact your local Extension office and complete the required forms and background checks. The local office will 

complete your registra on.  Complete a 3‐hour online training module at home.  A end a 9‐hour hands‐on field day which runs from 9 AM to 7 PM. Training dates for 2020 are: 

Southern Illinois: Saturday, March 28 at Tombstone Gun Range, Marion. Register by March 18.   Western Illinois: Saturday, June 13 at Gardner Camp, Hull. Register by June 3.  Northern Illinois: Saturday, Sept. 12 at Torstenson Youth Educa on Center, Pecatonica. Register by Sep‐

tember 2.  

Western Illinois 4‐H Horse Show—Loca on Change! The Western Illinois 4‐H Horse Show will be held Saturday, June 20 at the Warren County Saddle Club Arena – Monmouth, IL (735 235th Ave Monmouth, Illinois 61462). Registra on starts at 8 am with the show star ng promptly at 9 am. Entry fees are $3 per class or $10 for the day. There are 28 classes with awards going to the County High Point Award, The Versa‐lity Award, Junior High Point Award (age 8‐13) and Senior High Point Award (age 14‐18).

Warren County 4‐H Family Fun Night

Calling all Warren County 4‐H members and families! Join together for a fun night at the Monmouth YMCA! Saturday 

March 14th from 6 to 9 PM. A $3 entry fee will be taken at the door, then the kids can have a fun night of swimming, 

basketball and much more! Pizza and drinks will be provided! Members please tell you leaders if you will be a ending!

Livestock Judging Team Updates! On Saturday, January 25th the Warren and Henderson Warren Livestock Judging Team a ended there first Judging Contest and did fantas c! See below for the results!  

□  Henderson/Warren JR Livestock Judging Team placed 2nd as a team. Individual placements are as followed: Au‐brey Killey (Warren) 1st place overall (1st in Swine and 2nd in Sheep), Dayne Gi ngs (Henderson) 3rd place overall (5th in Ca le and 5th in Swine), and Logan Corza  (Warren) was 10th overall (1st in Sheep).   

Federa on Update—What is Federa on? Update—Warren County Federa on members have been busy! Our last mee ng on Sunday December 15th was a very successful one!  With 5 members in a endance we talked about topics that are fast approaching, Warren Family Fun Night,  and Warren County Fair!  

Henderson County is making some big plans for 2020 Henderson County Fair!  More informa on will be as followed!

Two ways to give to 4‐H Paper Clover Campaign returns in April: It’s never been easier to support 4‐H. From April 29 to May 10, you can donate to 4‐H at your local Tractor Supply stores as part of the Paper Clover campaign. Money donated at your store stays right in the county where it’s given! Last fall, the campaign raised almost $1 million!   

Get your Clover at JOANN stores: Between March 1 and April 30, you can donate to 4‐H at your local JOANN store.   

YES! you can! College students can put their 4‐H experience to work while they develop their professional skills in youth development, group facilita on, cri cal thinking, and program management as a Project Youth Extension Service (YES!) intern. Project YES! Interns provide educa onal ac vi es for youth of military families. This is a 12‐month internship for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students and runs June 2020 – May 2020. Interns must a end the mandatory orienta on, 

currently scheduled for May 22‐30, 2020 as well as addi onal training throughout the year (as required). Following orienta on, interns may work 1‐2 weekends a month, however interns must commit to a minimum of one weekend per month (Fri‐Sun) for the dura on of the internship. Addi onal opportuni es may be presented during the summer months and throughout the year. Applica ons will be accepted through Feb. 29. Apply @ projectyouthextension.com.  

Study food science and win cash Science is cool, and now it pays! A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the top food science project in each county by the Chicagoland Food Science Founda on. Be sure to enroll in one of the four food science projects and 

learn more about the founda on. Look for more informa on this summer.  

Explore a future in agriculture March 6 | Decatur Teens can learn about careers in agriculture at the Women Changing the Face of Agriculture Conference March 6 at Richland Community College in Decatur. Applying online @ h ps://womenchangingthefaceofagriculture.com/. Presenters include some of the most successful women in agriculture. Their stories demonstrate the poten al careers available to any young woman considering an agricultural career.  

Here’s help to pay for college  

High school seniors planning careers in agriculture may apply for a $2,000 scholarship. Farm Credit Illinois will provide 30 scholarships to youth who live or farm in one of the 60 coun es in their service area. The first $1,000 will be distributed for the Fall 2019 semester, and the second $1,000 will be applied during the Fall 2021 semester.  Apply online at farmcreditIL.com by February 28. Are going to University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences? The college is MATCHING this scholarship, dollar for dollar! Double your money while ge ng a great ag educa on!

4‐H Fair Book Cover Contest—All Par cipants get a PRIZE! Any 4‐H member (age 8‐18 only) interested in crea ng an original design for the 2020 Henderson/Warren County 4‐H Fair Book must submit their entry to the Extension Office by Thursday, February 6 at 4:30 pm. All par cipants will receive a prize for helping to create the best fair book cover! 

 To be considered for the contest and to receive the prize, entries must meet the following requirements:

Title: Henderson or Warren County 4‐H Fair Book 

Paper: 8.5x11 piece of paper with at least a 1/2 inch blank border on all sides. 

Ink: Black ink or Black Marker 

*Do not use pencil. It is not dark enough to copy. Also, the finished copy is in black and white. Do not make a mul ‐colored copy. 

Originality: Everything must be freehand. You may not use a computer or copyright graphics. 

Fair Date: Leave a 1x3 inch space for the Extension Office to insert the dates and loca ons of the 4‐H Show and Project Show. 

4‐H Clover: The 4‐H Clover may not be distorted or rotated. Do not place text or pictures over the 4‐H Clover. For a list of guidelines regarding the 4‐H Clover, please contact your local Extension office.
