Na onal 4‐H Volunteer e‐Forum You are invited to be a part of the very first Na onal 4‐H Volunteer e‐Forum! This is your chance to get energized as you network with volunteers, county‐based staff, and state specialists from all across the county where #4HGrows through volunteers! The remaining e‐Forum series includes: 

Helping 4‐H’ers Grow in Life & Work: Thursday, December 7; 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Explore successful programs being implemen ng across the country that help youth focus on life‐long learning, workforce readiness and career explora on. 

Each e‐Forum session is designed to include presenters sharing informa on virtually and interac ve, hands‐on ac vi es at the local site that all volunteers, teen leaders and staff will par cipate in during the 90‐minute program.   Contact your 4‐H Extension staff to let them know you are interested in par cipa ng and to find the closest loca on where you can a end!  

Save the date Illini Summer Academies will be June 24 ‐28. NEW ACADEMIES. NEW ADVENTURES. NEW POSSIBILITIES. Open to youth who will have completed grades 8‐12 by the  me of the conference. 

4‐H Fair Book Cover Contest Any 4‐H member (age 8‐18 only) interested in crea ng an original design for the 2018 Henderson or Warren County 4‐H Fair Book must submit their entry to the Extension Office by February 19 at 4:30 pm. The entry that is selected for the cover will receive a prize. To be considered for the contest and to receive the prize, entries must meet the following requirements: Title: Henderson or Warren County 4‐H Fair Book Paper: 8.5x11 piece of paper with at least 1/2 inch border on all sides. Ink: Black ink or Black Marker *Do not use pencil. It is not dark enough to copy. Also, the finished copy is in black and white. Do not make a mul ‐colored copy. Originality: Everything must be freehand. You may not use a computer or copyright graphics. Fair Date: Leave a 1x3 inch space for the Extension Office to insert the dates and loca ons of the 4‐H Show and Project Show. 4‐H Clover: The 4‐H Clover may not be distorted or rotated. Do not place text or pictures over the 4‐H Clover. For a list of guidelines regarding the 4‐H Clover, please contact your local Extension office.  Deadline: Monday, February 19

Find the Clue to You! Mission: Adventure at this year’s Junior Leadership Conference If you are an Illinois 4‐H member in the 7th or 8th grade, it’s  me to reserve YOUR spot for the 2018 Illinois 4‐H Jr. Leadership Conference! We’re focusing on Mission: Adventure – Find the Clue to YOU! Solve the mystery of the missing Chris Clover, examine the business world and see what it takes to start your own business, explore virtual reality, crack the forensic codes and more!  Our 4‐H’ers fill the Illinois 4‐H Jr. Leadership Conference to capacity each year, and we’re hoping to do the same for our 2018 event! Save the dates of February 24‐25, 2018 and travel to Springfield to join us at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield Hotel. Registra on is open and fills on a first‐come, first‐served basis with the first 100 youth. More informa on and the registra on link is posted on the Illinois 4‐H website: go.illinois.edu/4Hjlc. Adults wishing to chaperone this event must be screened by University of Illinois Extension screening procedures and contact the State 4‐H Office for details.   The Illinois State 4‐H Youth Leadership Team creates a fun, hands‐on weekend that’s full of 4‐H educa onal sessions, lots of laughter, mee ng new people, and learning new things! Take the mission and find the adventure ‐ we’d love to see you there!  

FINAL CHANCE – Registra on Extended Join us on this once‐in‐a‐life me 4‐H experience! Ci zenship Washington Focus is for 4‐H members ages 14‐18 by May 1, 2018. Teens explore the federal legisla ve process through workshops and hands‐on sessions, tour historical sights and museums, provide youth voice on issues that concern them, visit federal legisla ve offices, and meet teens from other states. The trip is Saturday, July 7 to Saturday, July 14. World of 7 Billion Video contest wants you Back by popular demand, the World of 7 Billion student video contest helps you bring technology and crea vity into your middle and high school classes. The contest challenges your students to create a short video connec ng world popula on growth and one of three global challenges: Advancing Women and Girls, Feeding 10 Billion, or Preven ng Pollu on. Students can win up to $1,000 and par cipa ng teachers will receive free curriculum resources. The contest deadline is February 22, 2018 – use this lesson plan to get started now! Full contest guidelines, resources for research, past winners, and more can be found at h ps://www.worldof7billion.org/student‐video‐contest/.

Test your teamwork & problem‐solving skills All Illinois 4‐H Clubs are invited to an engaging leadership and STEM project which builds teamwork and problem solving skills. H Cubed, an organiza on founded by 4‐H members, will host a 2018 Live Division I Rube Goldberg Machine Contest® on February 17 in Morris. The winner of the contest is eligible to compete at the Division I Finals and win the  tle: Rube Goldberg Machine Contest Division I Champion.   Teams can range from 2 to 10 people age 11‐14. The contest is open to 15 teams, so register NOW at h ps://www.rubegoldberg.com/hosts/h‐cubed‐morris‐2018 . A Rube Goldberg Machine Contest (RGMC) is an event where students of all ages compete with the machines they have imagined, designed and created in a fun and compe ve forum. The compe ons encourage teamwork and out‐of‐the‐box problem solving, in a fresh learning environment and level playing field. Remember, to compete in an RGMC all you need is a pile of junk and a great imagina on! For more informa on, contact Anthony Warmack at [email protected].  

Win the tle of quiz bowl champion The State 4‐H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Peoria. The State 4‐H contest will be held in conjunc on with the Illinois Jr. Holstein Associa on “Spring Thing” workshop.   All 4‐H members interested in par cipa ng are invited to a end; no need to be enrolled in dairy or own dairy ca le. There is no limit how many can a end from each county. Teams of four can compete, or individuals can be added to other teams.  The State 4‐H Dairy Quiz Bowl team will be selected from the eligible 4‐H members par cipa ng at this state contest. Registra on will be handled through the county offices in January. For informa on contact Dave Fischer @ [email protected] or call 618‐830‐4957.

Applica ons are being accepted for the 2018 4‐H outbound interna onal exchange programs being offered through University of Illinois 4‐H and the States’ 4‐H Interna onal Commi ee. 4‐Hers 12 – 18 years old can select to par cipate in a 4‐week home stay to Costa Rica, Japan, South Korea or Norway. If you are interested in a longer experience abroad, the Japan program offers an opportunity to a end Japanese school for three weeks before star ng a 4‐week homestay. Dates of travel range from mid‐June – mid‐August depending on the program.  These programs enhance the 4‐H program through interna onal, cross‐cultural experiences that enable young people to improve their leadership and communica on skills, while increasing their interna onal awareness and understanding. Delegates live with a host family where they experience family life, community ac vi es and be immersed in the local culture of the country. With 4‐H exchange opportuni es, you are not just a tourist, but also a family member and expected to par cipate in all aspects of family and community life the program has to offer.   Program costs vary depending on the country and es mated airfare. Scholarships are available to provide financial assistance to selected delegates. Adults interested in serving as a chaperon are encouraged to apply.  Get more informa on at: go.illinois.edu/global4H.

Club Money Management Just a few reminders on how clubs can operate in regards to financial ma ers. 1. Clubs are allowed only two fundraisers per year. If you are having a fundraiser, a fundraising form should

be completed two weeks prior to adver sing the event and signed by Extension staff. 2. Clubs are no longer tax exempt. 3. Clubs cannot keep more than two years of expenses in their accounts. If they have more, they will need to

complete a long term spending plan. 4. Clubs that do not have an EIN or a bank account must complete an indica on of financial ac vity form

every year. 5. Clubs cannot conduct raffles

Let the Games begin... 4‐H (FIRST) robo cs groups are off and running First LEGO League (FLL) This year Unit 10 has three 4‐H FLL robo c teams; RoboStorm, 4‐H Lightning Bots and McDonough County 4‐H Macomb Bots. On Saturday, December 9, Bradley University Renaissance Coliseum is hos ng the FIRST LEGO League Central Illinois regional compe on. The theme this year is called Hydro Dynamics. Teams have been working hard since late August in all four of their compe on areas; Core values, Robot Design, Robot performance or the table run and the Project. The youth in this program are between grades 4‐8 and have a ended prac ces at the First Presbyterian church of Knoxville and in the conference room at the Knox County Argri center. The 4‐H Macomb Bots meet at Currens Hall on the campus of WIU. We wish these teams good luck and, most important, have fun. FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) The 4‐H FIRST Tech Challenge has a new name. Formerly the Techno Bullets, they are now the Binary Bullets due to their team number being 10101. This fi een member team opened its season on November 18 at Orion IL. The meet was an Illinois and Iowa compe on. The Binary Bullets had a lot of posi ve feedback on their presenta on and engineering note book from the judges. On that day, the Binary Bullets had perfect execu on in the field compe on and won every match against their Illinois compe tors. Then the team squared off against Iowa in a state to state compe on and also prevailed with a score of 157 Iowa and 175 Illinois. The Binary Bullets are ranked # 1 in the State of Illinois a er their first contest. The second compe on is being held in Knox County. This is the first of its kind for a robo c compe on at the Knoxville High School. The compe on will take place on Sunday, December 17 at 8:00 am. FIRST Robo cs Challenge (FRC) The Techno Ferrets will receive its challenge on January 6, 2018. The team will meet at Knox College Sharvey G. Umbeck Science and Mathema cs building as their training site. This program is for high school students, grades 9‐12. The group is anxiously awai ng the start of their season, where they will start the building of their robot within a high intense 6 week build period. Good luck to all of our Robo c 4‐H (FIRST) teams and coaches.

Unit‐Wide Policies The new year begins September 1. Please make sure you read and understand the policies. We are

trying to keep the deadlines consistent so it is easier for everyone to remember the dates. If a deadline lands on a weekend the paperwork needs to be turned in the drop box on Monday prior to 7:59 a.m. before the office opens.

December 1 ‐ Re‐enrollment, project selec on, RISK form, and emergency medical informa on forms need to be completed. If you were a member last year, and you miss the December 1 re‐enrollment deadline, you will not be eligible to par cipate in the 2018 4‐H shows at the fair. Check with your club leader about the $20 program fee. Each club will be invoiced for the total amount due. Please go online to re‐enroll at h p://il.4honline.com.

Members will need to a end at least four mee ngs a year to be eligible to par cipate in your county’s 4‐H fair. You have to be physically present at the 4‐H mee ng. Excused absences do not count as a ending.

At minimum members must complete a talk or demonstra on. However, clubs may require both.

Secretaries are required to send a endance sheets to the Extension Office monthly a er each 4‐H mee ng. A endance reports may be emailed, scanned, mailed, or dropped off. We ask that you use the online Secretary Record Book. You may print it out.

Treasurers need to make sure they are balancing accounts monthly and providing reports during each mee ng. Also, make sure you are using the required online Treasurer Record Book.

January 1 – Livestock and Companion Animal (dogs and cats) Project Enrollment deadline. This is the last date you may add ANY livestock project and s ll be eligible to show that project at the county 4‐H fair.

March 1 – General Project enrollment deadline. This is the last date you may add a general project and s ll be eligible to show that project at the county 4‐H fair. Remember that you already turned in your enrollment in December, but if you need to add a general project you may do so before this deadline.

May 1 ‐ Horse project members’ ownership/lease papers and pictures due to the office.

May 1 – Quality Assurance and Ethics cer fica on (QAEC) is required of all livestock and companion animal project members, including Dogs and Cats. If you plan to show livestock, horses, dog, or cat at the county and/or state fair, this is now a state requirement for all of us at the county level. If you have completed this in the past, you do not need to do it again. Ask your local extension office if you are not sure you have completed training. You can visit the web site at‐ http://web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/ to take the training.

June 11 – Online entries will be due at the close of the day. Keep in mind—do not delay!

Quality Assurance & Ethics (QAEC) Cer fica on All 4‐H members enrolled in beef, dairy, cats, dogs, goats, horses, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and/or swine are required to complete the online Quality Assurance and Ethics course once in their 4‐H career. It must be completed by May 1, 2017. The course can be found online at: web.extension.illinois.edu/qaec/.

ILLINOIS STATE 4‐H AWARD This award can only be won once in a 4‐H member’s career. It is open to 4‐H members who were 15‐18 years of age on September 1, 2017 and are currently enrolled in 4‐H. Members may apply in any of the five award areas of community service, communica ons, leadership, personal growth or project mastery. Winners choose their prize of either the Na onal 4‐H Congress trip (valued at approximately $1.300), other na onal 4‐H trip (valued at approximately $1,000) or a $1,000 educa onal scholarship. The award focuses on the last three 4‐H years of 4‐H, school or community ac vi es. Two essays are also included as part of the applica on—focusing on Excellence of Mastery (of your award area) and Impact (of your award area). The applica on is available for download at h ps://4h.extension.illinois.edu/members/awards. The applica on is due to your local Extension office January 2.    

Vet Science Award apps due in January! This award recognizes youth that have enrolled and demonstrated mastery in the 4‐H Veterinary Science project for a minimum of three years. Open to youth who were 15‐18 on Sept. 1, 2017. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the 4‐H Vet Science project. The award can only be received once in 4‐H career. $200 cash prize. Applica ons are due to your local Extension office January 2. Download the applica on at go.illinois.edu/4Hawards. 

EXTENSION TO ACES SCHOLARSHIP Incoming freshmen and transfer students to University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences may apply for a NEW $2,500 scholarship. This year, 54 scholarships (two per each of Extension’s 27 units) will be awarded. To learn more @ academics.aces.illinois.edu/scholarships/new‐students. Click on “Incoming freshmen and incoming transfer students scholarship applica on.” In Step #2, select “Extension to ACES” scholarship. Ques ons? Your local Extension staff can help you! Just ask us.  

FARM CREDIT ILLINOIS SCHOLARSHIPS High school seniors planning careers in agriculture may apply for a $2,000 scholarship. Farm Credit Illinois will provide 30 scholarships to youth who live or farm in one of the 60 coun es in their service area. The first $1,000 will be distributed for the Fall 2018 semester, and the second $1,000 will be applied during the Fall 2020 semester.  Apply online at farmcreditIL.com before February 28. Are going to University of Illinois College of ACES? The college is MATCHING this scholarship, dollar for dollar! Double your money while ge ng a great ag educa on!   

ILLINOIS 4‐H LIVESTOCK SCHOLARSHIP This $1,000 Illinois 4‐H Livestock Scholarship is open to members who have demonstrated mastery in the livestock area and plan to con nue their educa on in the area of agriculture. Members must have been involved in the livestock project a minimum of three years. You must have been a member for at least 5 years and a ending either a 4‐year university, community college, or trade school. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and college freshmen. Applica ons are due March 1. Download the applica on @ go.illinois.edu/4Hscholarships.

LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP  Eight $1,000 Legacy of Leadership Scholarship are offered to members who have demonstrated overall mastery and leadership in the 4‐H program. You must have been a member for at least 5 years and a ending either a 4‐year university, community college, or trade school. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and college freshmen. Applica ons are due March 1. Download the applica on @ go.illinois.edu/4Hscholarships. Finalists must submit a video of your 4‐H accomplishments.    *Please note, more informa on regarding the Henderson/Warren Farm Bureau scholarship and the Pa  Jeanne Higgins scholarship will be available in the February newsle er.  

Knox County 4‐H Horsebowl and Hippology Teams You are invited to join Knox County’s 4‐H Horsebowl and Hippology Teams for an awesome learning experience about horses. You will learn how to judge and care for horses as well as how to get yourself and your horse ready for a horse show!  WHAT IS HORSEBOWL?  Trivia about Horses.  Each spring, teams of four of five compete against several other teams from other coun es at a Regional Compe on and hopefully qualify for state compe on!  There is a junior level     8‐13 and a senior level 14‐18.    WHAT IS HIPPOLOGY?  The study of the horse.  You can compete as an individual at the Regional Compe on by iden fying different horse related items.  There are three phases to this compe on, matching of horses from horse industry photos, taking a mul ple choice wri en exam and a judging por on (Examples are parts of a saddle, breeds of horses, colors of horses).  Several members in the region will go on to state.  HORSE JUDGING:  There will be two horse judging compe ons.  We work with the you to show you how a horse should travel properly and what confirma on to look for in different breeds of horses.  The horse team will begin mee ng on January 3, 2018 at 6 pm at the Knox Agri Center, 180 S. Soangetaha in Galesburg.  They will meet un l the end of April. Good news, you don’t have to own a horse to be on the team! Happy Holidays from the Henderson County 4‐H Federa on!  Federa on members gathered at H&H Feed on Friday, November 17 for the annual Stronghurst Christmas Walk. We would like to thank Phil Butler and Rebecca Harshbarger at H&H for allowing us to come back again this year. We appreciate their support! 

 

 

 Henderson and Warren County 4‐H Joins the Fight Against Hunger Saturday, December 9 Henderson and Warren County youth and families will package 10,000 meals to be distributed to local food banks and pantries. 4‐H Federa on members are spearheading the event in an effort to help families in their community who face food insecurity.   “Hunger is closer to home than many people realize, said Bill Million, University of Illinois Extension 4‐H youth development specialist. “According to a 2011 report published by Feeding America, Illinois ranks 26th in the na on when it comes to the number of children facing food insecurity. “One in five children faces hunger and food security on a recurring basis,” Million said, accoun ng for 23 percent of all Illinois youth under the age of 18.  The event will run from noon to approximately 2 pm at the Warren/Henderson Farm Bureau Auditorium in Monmouth. A minimum of 50 volunteers are needed to ensure this event is a success. Please register to be a volunteer at h ps://web.extension.illinois.edu/registra on/?Registra onID=17621. If you have addi onal ques ons or concerns, please contact Tara.
