Christmas is the feast commemorating God becoming human! This is indeed a strange thing to happen, and not really very logical! However, for people of faith, it is inspirational, reminding them that there is God who cares for them, like a parent! As the International Year of Soils comes to an end, the feast of Christmas should remind us of the sacredness of soil (earth) and the need to protect it, keeping in mind the Biblical Command of 'till and keep' (Genesis Chap. 2: 15}. As the Catholic Church has decided to open the door of mercy by declaring a longer year of mercy, the challenge is to get beyond the typical boundaries of 'anthropos' to the larger interdependent network of 'life' so that there could be 'life in abundance' for all. As 'children of the Heart', let us truly grow as Heartians with sensitivity towards all life-forms, never excluding the humans - in the neighbourhood (be it Kochi, Chennai or Syria) or in the womb! Greetings of Peace and all good wishes for a year of Mercy! SH Tops AgainSacred Heart College has yet again topped the colleges in Kerala in the nation-wide

survey conducted by the English magazines India Today and The Week. The ratings are

given after detailed assessment based on a broad spectrum of parameters such as quality

of teaching, student support, infrastructure, research, reputation etc. In the ratings by India

Today, SH ranked 27th in science subjects and 28th in the arts and commerce streams. In

the survey conducted by The Week-Hansa team, the college was ranked 21st in the

science stream and 36th in the arts stream.

Eminent Journalist P. Sainath Delivered Chavara Excellence Lecture

The second Chavara Excellence for Social Transformation Lecture Series

was held on 15th December 2015.The lecture 'Media, Money Power and

Democracy' was delivered by eminent journalist P. Sainath, who is a recipient

of the Ramon Magsaysay award and author of the non-fiction bestseller

Everybody Loves a Good Drought. District Collector M.G.Rajamanickam

IAS presided over the function. P. Sainath pointed out that growing inequality

was the curse of the country that is purportedly growing in “leaps and

bounds.” He denounced government policies that favoured the elite and

insistence of the state on taxing the poor. He didn’t conceal his anguish when

he said that India, which is home to the largest number of poor in the world,

also hosts the largest number of billionaires after US and China.

He also revealed his concern about the future of journalism and the threat

posed by paid news. However, he shunned cynicism when he said that

responsible citizens, in the absence of a sensitive political class, would rise to

the demands of a democratic society. Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkappillil CMI,

Rev. Dr. Jose Kuriedath CMI and Prof. Siby Abraham also addressed the

gathering.

Heartifest 2015: Carnival of the HeartsHeartifest, the annual mega fest of the college was held

on 3rd January 2015.The cultural events began with

the lighting of the lamp by Manager Rev. Fr. Jose

Kuriedath CMI, Principal Fr. Prasant Palakkappillil

CMI, AASH President Babu Joseph, PTA Vice

President Paul Raj, Staff Secretary Prof. Alphons Ligori

and College Union Chairman Aloysius Xavier. Prof.

Mathew Ulakamthara received the award for his

exemplary contribution to Malayalam literature. Heartian Award for Distinguished Alumnus was received by Dr.

M.M. Jacob, Former Governor of Meghalaya who had been a pre-university student in the college. The college

also conducted the annual general meeting of Alumni Association of Sacred Heart College (AASH).

The college union conducted a youth meet on the topic

“Young leaders for social reformation” on 14th February

2015. The meet was inaugurated by Deputy Mayor B.

Bhadra. Around 70 students from various educational

institutions across the state participated in the

event.Sunburn, the renowned electronic music band,

presented Sunburn Campus in the Lakeview Grounds of

the college.

SH College organised a two-day workshop on the Philosophical Framework in Curriculum Design, Evaluation and Academic Mentoring sponsored by Kerala Higher Education Council in connection with the syllabus and curriculum revision on 19-20 June, 2015. Dr. G. Gopakumar, Vice Chancellor, Central University, Kasargod, Dr.W.Lawrence, S.Prabhakar, Associate Professor, International Relations and Strategic Studies, Madras Christian College, Chennai, Sri. T. P. Sreenivasan, Vice Chairman, Higher Education Council and Padma Shri Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, former Principal, Lady Sreeram College and UGC member led various sessions.

Sacred Heart College has been ever committed to the cause of the communi ty. HEAL (Hear t ian Extended Arm for Life) is initiated by the college to extend its arms to support the needy. As part of the outreach programmes, the college has launched a massive cancer awareness campaign. Extensive cancer survey, lectures by prominent physicians and free mammography test were conducted as part of the programme.

Towards cleanlinessAs part of the green i n i t i a t i v e s , t h e Heartian community has participated in the Suchitwabodhanayajnam, a rally led by Rev. Fr. George Peter Pittappillil. On that day, students cleaned

Santinagar junction and its premises and took an oath to keep the surroundings clean.

Chavara SH Bhavana Padhati, spearheaded by NSS with the support of Y’s Men’s International, is a venture aimed at providing housing for the needy. The dream venture of the college was launched on 4th August 2015. The occasion was graced by the presence of social activist Daya Bai and Y's Men's International District Governor, Mr. Bijumon. The dignitaries handed over the cheque to Mr. Varghese P.A., non- teaching staff at SH College, to assist with the construction. Two houses are being constructed under this scheme, with the partnership of NSS SH unit, Sacred Heart Monastery, Y's Men's International and the local bodies.

A Step Towards “Housing for All”

S A D A S ( S t u d e n t s A g a i n s t Drug Abuse, Alcoholism a n d S u i c i d e )

was inaugurated by Saumini Jain, Hon. Mayor of Kochi Corporation on 2nd December 2015. Prinicipal Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkappillil CMI, Prof. Thommachan Xavier, teacher co-ordinator, Aloshius Xavier, student representative of the venture also spoke in the event. Miss Saumini Jain emphasized the need to reaffirm priorities when confronted by temptations. She also appreciated the collective commitment of the student community of the college towards liberating students from undesirable influences. SADAS, launched in 2014 by Excise Minster K. Babu, is an initiative of the college to eradicate drug abuse and associated evils from educational institutions. It aims to empower the youth by means of awareness programmes and seminars and prevent them from taking recourse to drugs, alcohol and suicide when faced by adversity.

Sargapatham 2015, the prestigious intercollegiate literary pentathlon, conducted by the Speaker's Forum was held on 19th & 20th November 2015. Teams from various colleges across Kerala contended for honours in 5 events viz., group discussion, mock press, quiz, essay writing and extempore. The two-day event began with a symposium on the topic 'Social Media: Perils and Potentials.' T.P. Sasikumar (Scientist, Educationalist, Writer, Psychotherapist and Directorate General of Security, Cabinet Secretariat, New Delhi), Adv. A. Jaishankar (Lawyer and Social Activist), V.K. Adarsh (technology writer, author, and columnist) took part in the conclave. CMS College, Kottayam bagged the overall championship and Govt. Medical College, Kalamassery finished runners-up in the event.

SH NCC Army Wing 3(b) Coy organised NCC Mega

Fest on January 30th and 31st 2015. It was the first of

its kind, a rare opportunity for cadets of the junior and

senior division of 21(k) Bn to meet and compete in

various events including sports and arts fetes.

part in all the events and bagged numerous prizes,

winning ‘Best Team’ title in quiz, group discussion and

group dance. The best cadet title was awarded to Cdt.

Thejas Jo Puthusserry of Department of Mathematics

of our college. Around 2000 cadets from various schools and colleges in the state took part in the event. The

Principal, Prasant Palakkappillil awarded the ever-rolling trophy to D.B. College, Thalayolaparambu. SH College

bagged the first runner-up trophy. Bharat Matha College, Thrikkakkara bagged the second runners-up.

T h e Department of Botany s t a r t e d hands- on- training in a wide array o f a r e a s s u c h a s

mushroom cultivation, landscaping and garden des ign ing, nursery management , f lower arrangement and vegetable carving, topiary and bonsai, poly house farming, organic farming and plantation management, plant tissue culture, cultivation of medicinal plants, traditional post harvesting technology, natural fiber extraction and handicrafts, natural dyes and mural painting etc. As part of the initiative, the department distributed more than 2000 vegetable saplings in an event co-ordinated by Prof. Roy Zacharias.

The Department of Sociology organised a national seminar on Nov 24th in fond memory of late Rev. Fr. Abraham Kallarackal who retired from the department in 2006. The topic of the seminar was Gender & Fascism. Rev. Fr. Jose Kuriedath CMI, the Manager of Sacred Heart College inaugurated the seminar .Principal, Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkapillil CMI welcomed the gathering. The resource person of the day was Prof. Sheeba, Associate Professor, Sanskrit University, Kalady. She talked on gender, its connotations, the birth of fascism, the link between gender and fascism, sub-nationalism, linguistic sexism, etc. Students and teachers from various colleges attended the seminar. The seminar was followed by an interactive session.

The Economics Department organised a two day UGC-sponsored state level seminar on “Rural Credit in Kerala: Growth, Problems and Prospects” on 29th & 30th September 2015. Prof.D.Narayana PhD, Technical Advisor to State Planning Board, Government of Kerala, inaugurated the seminar. He delivered the key note address on “Agricultural Credit in Kerala: Continuing High Dependence on Non-institutional Lenders.” Dr. Christabell P. J., Ms. Dhanya V, Dr. A. M. Jose, Mr. Shaji K. V., Sri. Akhil C. S. and Rev. Dr. Jose Kuriedath CMI, Manager, SH College spoke in the event.

“From Cinema to People and from People to Cinema”

SH School of Communication l a u n c h e d Kottakavandi, a touring talkie that travelled through the rural areas of s i x n o r t h e r n d i s t r i c t s o f Kerala. Films of different genres were screened in s c h o o l s , colleges, local c l u b s a n d nalkavalas. The screening was f o l l o w e d b y discussions and debates.

The Department of English organized Dr. Dan Thottakara National Seminar on 26th & 27th March, 2015 on the topic “Globalization and Cosmopolitanism: The Future of Humanities in the 21st Century.” The seminar focused on the challenges faced by humanities and social sciences today. The seminar provided insight into how caste, class, gender and sexuality mediate the future of humanities and social sciences.

The UGC-sponsored national seminar on ‘Recent Trends in Mathematics’ was organised by the Department of Mathematics on 16th and 17th February 2015. The seminar brought together experts and young researchers from all over India to discuss the recent developments in mathematical analysis and to promote exchange of ideas in various applications of mathematical analysis in science and engineering. The speakers at the event were Dr.R.Vittal Rao, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Dr.S.Sundar, IIT Madras, Dr.Raju K. George, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Dr. M.P.Rajan, IISER, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr. A. Vijayakumar, CUSAT and Dr. Vinod Kumar P.B., RSET, Kakkanad.

Workshop on High Performance Cloud Computing

Department of Computer S c i e n c e organised a o n e - d a y n a t i o n a l level hands-o n w o r k s h o p o n H i g h Performance Cloud Technology which was co-sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science, Technolgy and Environment. The Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. K. Poulose Jacob, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, CUSAT. In the inaugural address, Dr.Poulose explained the benefits, challenges and future of cloud computing. Rev. Dr.Prasant Palakkappillil delivered the presidential address. Resource person Mr. C. Babu Ebenezer, consu l tan t , W ip ro Technolgies, Bangalore, Rev. Dr.Jaison Paul Mulerikkal, Asst. On September 17th, the Department of French organized an interactive session with Ms. Sithara, Campus France. The session dealt with the possibilities of higher education in France.

Research team from the Division of Arachnology recently discovered three new species of spiders from Western Ghats. One of the newly discovered spiders has been named to honour Sacred Heart College by assigning the

species name as Martensopoda sanctor sp. nov., where sanctor denotes Sacred Heart (Latinized). Another one is a small jumping spider, Stenaelurillus albus sp. nov., which is notable for exhibiting a rare phenomenon, in the whole of the animal kingdom, of “paternity protection” through “mating plugs”. The third spider is an ant-mimicking ground sac spider, Castianeira furva sp. nov. The discoveries have been published in leading international animal taxonomy journals, Zootaxa and Zookeys.

Department of Aquaculture conducted a seminar by Dr. M.Shaji, Deputy Director, Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) on Aquaponics on 7th August 2015. The seminar was attended by students and faculty of the departments of zoology, botany and aquaculture.

Talk on Nonlinear Optics

The Physics department held a talk on Nonlinear O p t i c s b y P r o f . P u r u s h o t t a m C h a k r a b o r t h y, S a h a Ins t i t u te o f Nuc lea r Physics, Kolkata on 6th August 2015.

The Commerce department organised an intercollegiate management and cultural fest, 'Tandav' on 20th and 21st February 2015. The event saw the participation of over 166 students from 40 colleges. The competitions included business quiz, best manager, mock trading, crisis management, article writing, product launch, Just a Minute, photography, solo song, dress designing, football tournament and treasure hunt.

MG University ChampionsThe Physical Education department that boasts excellent sporting credentials continued to reign among colleges affiliated to MG University as it bagged the first prize in shuttle badminton (men), volleyball (men), tennis (men), kabaddi (men) and table tennis (men and women). SH also became runners-up in handball (men) and basketball (men).The college basketball team also won the inter-collegiate basketball tournament held at Baselios College, Kottayam.Students of SH, who were part of the MG University men’s badminton team, became runners-up in the All India Inter-University badminton championship.

KV Thomas Endowment National Seminar

The 14th Prof. K V Thomas Endowment National Seminar on “Molecular Approach to Current Advances in Chemistry” was organised by Post Graduate & Research Department of Chemistry on 7th and 8th December 2015. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr.S.Christopher, Director General of DRDO, Govt of India. Resource persons for the seminar were Prof. Siva Umapathy and Prof. E. Arunanan, IISc, Prof. A Samantha, University of Hyderabad and Prof. Mangala Sundar, IIT Chennai.

Dr. V.T. Jose

Dr V. T. Jose joined the Economics Department at SH in 1991. He distinguished himself as a teacher and an eminent researcher, helming two major research projects during his tenure. He was awarded a post doctoral fellowship and also won the Publisher Award instituted by the

college with three books to his credit. He served as a member of the Board of Studies of MG University. His association with the college continues as he guides the MPhil programme at the Economics Department.

Dr. George Joseph joined the Botany Department on 8th Nov. 1983. He served the Government of Kerala in the capacity of Addit ional Private Secretary to Minister of Forests on deputation, during 1988-91. He took his PhD in Education under FIP of UGC from MG University and won the best publisher award twice. He has been the member of UG and PG boards of studies in Botany under MG University.

Dr. Joy P. Joseph Rev. Sr. Rosily SABS

'Sr. Rosily' is a name that stands for an irresistible fragrance of unalloyed innocence and balmy compassion. She joined the English department in 1992. C o m p l e m e n t i n g h e r e a r n e s t involvement in the academics she d e l i g h t f u l l y s h o u l d e r e d extracurricular responsibilities like leading the college dance team for more than a decade. Sr. Rosily kept scaling up ranks of honour which include positions like Provincial General(6yrs), General Councillor(6yrs), Provincial Superior(5yrs) and Assistant General(at present).

Dr. Joy P. Joseph has joined the department of Botany in 1988. He made his vibrant presence felt through his humour sense and organising skills. He has guided four research

scholars, undertaken two research projects and published 14 research papers. He has worked as a

Member of P G Board of Studies M G University during 1993 – 1996. He has enormous expertise in the disciplines of Plant Tissue Culture and Anatomy.

Prof. Johnson John has served the college from 1984 onwards. He became the Head of the Department of Commerce in 2013. He is known for maintaining the curious mix of love

and concern towards the students and rigour in academic issues. He has won the Dan Thottakara

Student Service Award in 2012.

Dr. P.C. Sebastian joined the college in 1994 and since then contributed immensely in raising the Department of Zoology to new levels of excellence. He is a post-doctoral fellow at National Institute of Immunology. He is fondly remembered by his students for his brilliance in teaching and affability.

Prof. George Philip, associate professor, Dept. of Physics, joined Sacred Heart College in 1982. He became Head of the Department 2013. At the time of his retirement, he was the senior most faculty of our college. Prof. George is remembered for his cheerful demeanour and generous heart. He took special care to know each of his students well. He visited their homes, knew their family and maintained strong relationships with them.

CLUBS AND FORA Hiroshima Day

Civil Service Study Circle of the college and Civil Service Institute, Pala jointly organised a one-day seminar on the topic “Career prospects in civil services” on Saturday, 11th July 2015. A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish IAS, Secretary, Department of Public Works, Government of Kerala inaugurated the function. Dr. Joseph Vettickan, Principal, Civil Service Institute Pala delivered the Presidential address. Jyothish Mohan IRS, Asst. Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, led the academic session of the seminar.

Career Prospects in Civil Services

Heartian MercatusThe ED Club conducted a Trade Fair, Heartian Mercatus 2015. There were game corners, stalls for food, mehandi designing, handicraft items and so on that catered to the demands of enthusiastic Heartians.

The Dance Club of the college in collaboration with “Folded Paper Dance and Theatre”, Settle, Honk Kong, presented “Water in Kerala.” It was a week-long workshop held from 16th to 22nd August under the leadership of Kanta Kochhar Lindgren, an artist from U.S.A and project director for the workshop. Beth Graczyk, Morgan Chang and Aaron Gabriel from the U.S, Sen Jansen T.F. (alumnus of the college), Rag Saseendrababu and Jebin Jesmes from India also participated in the event.

“Water in Kerala”

Students of Sacred Heart College observed Hiroshima Day by the creative idea of hanging 1000 origami cranes in remembrance of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was diagnosed with blood cancer due to radiation from the atomic explosion in Hiroshima. The event was an initiative of the Creativity Club of the college.

The seven day annual camp of NSS unit of the college was held at Govt. UP School, Chempankuzhy near Neriamangalam from 18 – 24 December, 2015. One hundred NSS volunteers attended the camp. The major activities carried out during the camp include Neriamangalam PHC cleaning, health survey, river road reconstruction and tree planting in the school campus. A trekking to Meenuliyanpara was another attraction. Alumnus of the college and honorable water resource minister of Kerala Shri.P.J. Joseph visited the camp and interacted with students. Principal Rev.Dr. PrashantPalakkappillil and Vice-Principal Rev.Dr. Jose Thuravackal were present. The camp was led by program officers Prof. Sanu Varghese and Dr. Ignatious Abraham and volunteer secretaries Jerome Joseph and Sara George.

Women as Harbingers of Change

Members of the Primrose Nature Club attended a t h r e e - d a y nature camp at Dr. Salim A l i b i r d sanc tua ry, Thattekkad in January 2015. Nature awareness classes were c o n d u c t e d as part of the c a m p . Members of the club also went trekking to Thoppimudi situated in the sanctuary. Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkappillil, Dr. Giby Kuriakose, Prof. Didimos Varghese, Mr. Thomas Peechat, Mr. Sreejith MG, Mrs. Bilu P Lalu and Mrs. Chitra Pillai led the camp.

Nature Camp

Jesus Youth and SH monastery jointly o r g a n i s e d Snehasangamam, an initiative aimed at bringing the joy of Christmas to the poor and destitute. A r o u n d 1 5 0 homeless persons in Kochi took part in the event. Students actively took part in the event, sharing gifts and clothes, singing carols and spreading the cheer o f t h e s e a s o n

among the gathering.

Bodhi 2015The Bhoomithrasena Club of the college in

association with the Kerala State Council of Science, Technology and Environment conducted Bodhi 2015 on February 25th as part of the National Science Day Celebrations. Dr. Rani Joseph, Professor Emeritus, Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, CUSAT inaugurated the function. Chemistry Awareness Programme (CAP), “The Magic of Chemistry,” a demonstration of 26 experiments and a chemistry quiz were held as part of the event.

SWASTI, the women's cell of the college held an interactive session with the renowned social activist Daya Bai. The session saw her exhorting women to take up an active role in reforming the society and purging it off all evils. She also expressed her concern over the perpetual marginalization faced by certain communities even after nearly seven decades of independence.

As the International Year of Soils ends, SHARE (Sacred Heart

Advanced Research Endeavour) in collaboration with Organic

Kerala Trust, chaired by Principal Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkappillil

CMI, organised a seminar and an exhibition of posters and soil

samples. The exhibition was done in collaboration with the Soil

Survey and Conservation Department. Dr. Sreekumar, HoD of

Geology Department, Christ College, Irinjalakkuda was the chief

resource person.

Riya Tomy of II BA English attended the all India Nausainik Camp held at Karwar, Karnataka and also secured gold medal in h e a l t h a n d h y g i e n e examination.

SUO T. G. Meenakshi (III DC Computer Science) NCC Air Wing participated in the prestigious Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) and was part of the 20-cadet NCC Contingent to Singapore in November, 2015.

Dr. Jorphin Joseph, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, returned after completing the coveted Raman Research post doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas, USA.

Dr. Jinu George of the Department of Chemistry presented a paper Energy in Chemistry (RSC) in July at Her io t -Wat t Un ivers i ty, Edinburgh, UK..

Ore Udal, a short film by Dr. Asha Achy Joseph, HoD, SH School of Communication, was screened at Indian panorama IFFI, Goa 2015.

Dr. Roby Cherian represented the college for a state level evaluation of e n e r g y conservation and e n v i r o n m e n t protection activities in the year 2014-15 on 7 th Augus t 2 0 1 5 . T h e evaluat ion was done by BPCL Kochi, for which he won the first prize under the arts and science college category.

D r. M . Geo rge o f t he Department of Chemistry presented a paper at ASMS C o n f e r e n c e o n M a s s Spectrometry in May at St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
