Heany Park Primary School Newsletter September 11 2019 Edition 15 From the Principal’s Desk As an IB school community and Council we are committed to modelling and supporting the development of the attributes of the learner profile. LEARNING AND TEACHING Our school goals are: Description: Goal 1: To maximise the learning growth of every student in Literacy and Numeracy KIS: Develop and implement an agreed whole-school approach to curriculum planning and assessment. KIS: Enhance the capacity of staff to plan, teach and reflect in collaborative teams with a focus on high-impact, evidence based pedagogical and assessment practices. Goal 2: Deepen student engagement, collaboration and motivation within a rich, stimulating learning community KIS: To develop students' agency in their own learning. STUDENT ATTITUDE TO SCHOOL SURVEY The student attitude to school survey was undertaken earlier this term and the data has now been released. This week we have shared this data with the students who participated in the survey (Years 4-6). The students identified factual statements that the data presented and talked together to understand what it was saying. They have then worked on having input to what we should stop, start and keep doing to help make our school the best learning environment we can. TEACHERS LEARNING If your child’s class teacher has been absent it is often due to professional learning that they are engaging in to build their capacity to be the best teacher they can be.

2019 IB VICTORIAN NETWORK PYP CONFERENCE – 6 SEPTEMBER Three staff, Kym Ryan, Alicia Hendy and Chris Vavasseur attended the 2019 International Baccalaureate Victorian Network Primary Years Programme Conference in Marysville on 6 September. The day focussed on developing an empowering curriculum, embedding science opportunities across units of inquiry and developing student agency in their own learning. LEARNING WALKS AND TALKS Four members of the Leadership Team, Kym Ryan, Chris Vavasseur, Penny Esposito and I, attended a professional learning day with the Knox DET schools network on 29 August focussing on Learning Walks. Learning Walks and Talks are conducted by a group of teachers in a classroom. It is a tool for data collection to see the impact of professional learning, coaching or a school goal and how it has been actioned.

PARENTS LEARNING PMSS (Primary Maths and Science Specialists) Penny Esposito and Kym Ryan have been a part of this learning opportunity funded by DET over 2018 and 2019. We

have been chosen to be part of research to evaluate newly created maths resources to build those every important home links with this curriculum area. We see this as a new opportunity to engage our parents and families in discussions around numeracy. The suite of Numeracy at Home resources aims to offer students and families the opportunity to engage in, and evaluate mathematics activities and experiences in fun and interactive ways. A compass message will be sent to explain in more detail about this, we hope lots of families take up this offer.

STUDENT LEARNING – DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES The new interactive televisions have already been installed and are creating a buzz in the school. Many children have approached me to express their approval and excitement at this new addition in their classroom. Staff are certainly motivated and thrilled to be experimenting with what is now accessible/possible. WRITER’S FESTIVAL

Six students went to the Knox Writer’s Festival at Boronia K-12 on Tuesday with Mrs Ryan. They focussed on deepening understanding of the use of a Writer’s to support the creation of ideas.

EXHIBITION The Exhibition was a massive success with around 90 parents visiting over the two days. Teachers from other schools also came including the Principal, Julie Kennedy and Assistant Principal Robyn Geake from Rowville Secondary College.

We also had a special visitor, Dr Tien Kieu, State Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region. He was very impressed

with the Exhibition. Tien was very impressed by how confident and well-spoken our students were. He said that it speaks a great deal about our school, and the care and passion the teachers have. Tien was a refugee from Vietnam and is now a nuclear

physicist and Member of Parliament. He is going to come and speak to our senior students on October 7th to share his story. This is part of the next senior school unit of inquiry ‘Human migration is a response to challenges, risks and opportunities’.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST Prep students invited their Fathers or a special person to a morning breakfast and had a few little student-made products to share, such as very splendid ties.

ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST Congratulations to Sienna who came second in the Rotary Speech Contest held at Rowville Secondary College on 19 August. Our three students performed very well. Jack, Jared and Sienna all gained a lot from the experience. Jack noticed that the three Heany Park students voiced texts that were close to the heart. Sienna feels like she gained confidence to speak to a large group and learnt how to express passion. Jared believes the process not only has increased his confidence it has made him think more deeply about his writing

OSHC MONDO CLOTHES COLLECTION

The collection was a huge success, 585kg was collected. The average collected at other services has been around 300 kg. They are proposing to organise another in term 1 2020. We locked in 19 March for this if School Council approves.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS AND FACILITIES Bathroom update: We have publicised that the bathrooms are the next improvement School Council is working towards. This was confirmed by the students as a much wanted project

via the JSC. The first quote for the work is $80,000. We are currently seeking other quotes. All money raised in the Colour Fun Run will go towards this project. If we have any community members who are in this line of work and wish to quote for

the job please come and see me. We are also currently in the process of applying for a grant for shade sails above the artificial turf outside the gym, and a grant for an update of the atrium. SCHOOL ENROLMENTS in 2020 – workforce planning If your child is leaving Heany Park PS in 2020 or if you have a new enrolment for a sibling entering Prep, please contact the office ASAP or email to let us know.

CLASS PLACEMENTS IN 2020 In term 4 we commence the process of organising students into classes for 2020.

Students are asked to name six students who they work well with and empower each other’s learning. Teachers use this along with their knowledge of students’ academic, social and emotional skills to place students into class groupings that they believe will maximise learning for all. School is a nurturing environment where children are encouraged to work with diverse people learning to be open minded, view things from multiple perspectives and tolerate differences. Students are encouraged to problem solve to resolve

conflict and find solutions to meet the needs of the group. If you have any information that you would like us to take into account when forming class groups and allocating teachers, please let me know by 31 October. I would like this in writing by email or letter, addressed as ‘Confidential for The Principal Team’. Please do not expect us to use information from past years as we would hope that any prior issues are now resolved as children mature and grow and overcome any differences.
