Muscle and joint pain in adults has reached epidemic proportions and the rate of preventable injuries in youth sports is sky-rocketing.

Does body soreness or limitations in movement prevent you from being as physically active or capable as you’d like? Are you looking to increase yours or your kids’ athletic performance while minimizing risk factors for injury? If so, your solution is here: Introducing pH3.

Created by world-renowned Physical Therapist Dr. Mike Clark – and previ-ously only available to the world’s most elite athletes – pH3 is a revolutionary performance health system that utilizes the latest in sports science, clinical

tools and techniques, and cutting-edge technology to help you Move Better, Perform Stronger, and Recover Faster.

Dr. Clark and his team of practi-tioners have worked with the biggest names in sports—including A-Rod, Kobe Bryant, Kyrie Irving, Grant Hill, Tony Gonzalez, Shaq, and hundreds of other A-list athletes, celebrities, and executives. In an effort to extend their elite service to all individuals who want to be and stay active they have opened pH3, with the first location right here in Milton, Georgia.

Whether you are 8 or 88 years old, Body Armor’s expertly trained staff implements a series of proprietary tests

using the patent-pending Fusionetics technology platform that analyzes your mobility, stability, and body control and enables them to identify the root-cause of inefficiencies that are keeping you from feeling and performing your best. These same tests are being utilized cur-rently across professional and college sports to create baselines for injury prevention and training programs for all athletes.

At the conclusion of your tests, your results are scored and color-coded (red, yellow, or green) to identify priority areas and allow you and your practi-tioner to develop an individualized and targeted game plan to meet your needs.

Uncommonly common sense: Healthsense®By: Brooke wall, Sales Manager, Celebration Village

We’ve all seen TV advertisements of an aging adult who has fallen, cannot get up and is desperate for help. It’s a humbling reality for many older adults, and one most deny could happen to them. Research shows that one in three people over 65 will have a major fall each year, with that number increasing to one in two by the time a senior is 80.

As we age, we increasingly value our independence. Even family members of aging adults want to ensure their loved ones live a healthy, safe and protected lifestyle but that requires being pre-pared for whatever may arise. Medical alert systems are effective in saving many seniors from life-threatening situ-ations.

These unique alarms installed in the home and accompanied with an alarm pendent significantly decrease the number of hospital admissions and shorter stays for seniors, meaning a better quality of life. The downside—most require a long-term contract and the wireless range is limited, preventing the user from being away from home without deactivating the pendent.

Celebration Village, sister senior living communities coming soon to Forsyth and Acworth, values the safety and peace of mind of their residents. That is why they partnered with Health-

sense® Health and Safety Monitoring to offer residents immediate protection in all kinds of emergency situations, while respecting their need for privacy and independence.

Healthsense® provides a state-of-the-art health and safety monitoring service similar to a security system. Small discreet sensors are placed in each apartment, with no cameras or microphones, and give basic activity information including door opening, toilet flushing, sleeping, inactivity, etc. Healthsense® simply alerts a nurse or staff member if something is out of the ordinary—even if the person might not realize it yet. Small changes such as getting out of bed at odd hours and not returning signals a potential health or safety concern. Healthsense® notifies staff to provide help sooner, before a condition escalates to a trip to the ER or hospitalization.

True peace of mind with added se-curity and independence—it’s uncom-monly common sense and just one more way Celebration Village is usher-ing in a new age of senior living.

Opening this fall in Forsyth and Acworth later this summer, Celebration Village is proud to be built and man-aged with the founders of Masterpiece Living, and embodies the findings on successful aging to help residents age successfully, and ultimately celebrate living longer, healthier, happier lives.

Has your cancer doctor talked to you about nutrition?By: Jonathan D. stegall, MD

If you have cancer, you’ve prob-ably discussed various treatment options with your oncologist such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Unfortunately, most oncologists fail to provide specific nutrition recommen-dations – even though we know that nutrition makes a significant difference.

Cancer loves sugar, so the most important thing you can do is adopt a low sugar diet. This means eliminating processed sugar as well as other high carbohydrate foods such as rice, pasta, and breads. These foods not only feed cancer, but can also cause headaches, digestive disturbances, and mood changes.

Instead of carbohy-drates, focus on organic vegetables, naturally occur-ring fats, and high qual-ity pro-tein. The

vegetables provide phytonutrients and antioxidants, while the fats found in coconuts, avocados, nuts, and seeds provide a high quality energy source. Protein sources such as organic chicken, cage free eggs, and grass-fed beef are out-

standing as well.Although these recommendations

provide a wonderful foundation, there is a lot more to know about proper nutrition and how it should be inte-grated with an overall cancer treatment program.

That is why I sit down with all of my cancer patients to review

my specific nutritional recom-mendations for their spe-

cific cancer. Please call my office at

Becoming an orthodontistBrought to you by: Jeffrey JorDan

Have you ever thought about the path of your career? Unless you look over your shoulder, you are unlike-ly to recall the people that influenced you along the way. I sat down with Jeff Jordan to ask him about his journey to becoming an orthodontist.

Q: When did you know you wanted to be an orthodontist?

A: I was thirteen years old in 1973, an orthodontic patient of Ike Rolader. My mother, Peggy Jordan, drove me to Buckhead once a month for treatment. Let’s just say, I was a complicated case with a pronounced overbite.

Q: How did Ike Rolader influence you?

A: It was his personality. He was positive, encouraging and energetic, the same qualities I try to bring to my orth-odontic practice. As a child, watching a man love his work, stuck with me; and, I think a seed was planted.

The people we come in contact with can have a profound influence on us, as Ike Rolader did for a young Jeff Jordan. The legacy continues as other young men and women, patients treat-ed by Jeff Jordan, during twenty-eight

years of practice in Alpharetta, make dentistry their field of study becoming Dentists and Orthodontists in their own right.

gaining control over your fitness and your lifeFor many people, aging equals

lower metabolism, weight gain and less energy for activities you enjoy. This is directly related to loss of lean muscle.

While you can’t avoid getting older, there are some steps you can take to stop the process of muscle loss and start rebuilding healthy, lean muscle. It doesn’t matter how old you are or whether you haven’t exercised in years. You can still regain lean muscle that improves your shape and increases your metabolism.

Our downfall is inactivity. Too much sitting is the new smoking. Our bodies were meant to be active, stay ac-tive and be strong. When we stop doing meaningful exercise, we lose ground.

What is meaningful exercise?A critical component of stimulat-

ing the improvements we seek from exercise is the achievement of momen-tary muscular failure in each exercise performed.

With steady-state activities, like walking on a treadmill or biking, there is no momentary muscular failure involved.

Unless activity is demanding, it is practically worthless from an exercise perspective. However, if an activity

is sufficiently demanding to take the targeted muscles to momentary failure, then it qualifies as meaningful exer-cise. Muscle failure should be viewed as a means of signaling the body that it needs to get stronger in order to meet the demands being placed upon it.

What is the SuperSlow Zone solu-tion?

The SuperSlow Zone protocol is the original and genuine slow-motion, personal strength training workout. The exercise protocol has been proven successful in both building muscle and

increasing resting metabolism, thus allowing the body to burn more calories at rest.

SuperSlow Zone provides a safe and effective workout in a short amount of time so that you can get in, get out, and get on with your busy life!

Avoiding runner’s kneeRunning and jogging are great

spring sports. But did you know, knee injuries comprise about 55% of all sports injuries and approximately one-fourth of all problems treated by orthopaedic surgeons? While torn car-tilage and ligaments, like the dreaded ACL tear, are the most common injuries in this area, many knee problems can result from the repetitive movement of the kneecap (patella) against the thigh bone (femur), which can damage the tissue under the kneecap and result in a condition called Patellofemoral syn-drome, or “runner’s knee.”

Replacing shoes and insoles regu-larly and running on softer surfaces, like a trail or indoor track rather than hard pavement, can help prevent this condition. Taking precautions to pre-vent over-use and strengthening your quadriceps through weight training may also prove helpful.

These general guidelines may not be applicable in every case. If you do become injured, you’ll want to see an experienced, board-certified orthopae-dic specialist before undergoing any treatment.

OrthoAtlanta, one of the largest or-thopaedic and sports medicine practic-

es in Atlanta, includes offices in Johns Creek, 678-205-4261, and Gwinnett / Lawrenceville, 678-957-0757. Get Checked! April is Oral Cancer Awareness MonthApril is National Oral Cancer Aware-

ness Month, a time when the dental community rallies together to fight against a serious disease. While some may think oral cancer is rare, it will cause over 8,000 deaths each year, or about one person per hour every hour of the day. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation more than 43,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal (throat) cancer this year alone. Public awareness about this serious disease and its risk factors is crucial to saving lives. Dentists are in a unique position to perform head and neck exams and oral screenings every day that can help us identify abnormal-ities in the mouth at the earliest stage.

The fastest growing segment of

oral cancer patients are young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals. That’s why it is more important than ever for all adults to have regular oral cancer screenings. Knowing the risks can also help you make educated decisions about your health. There are several risk factors for oral cancer, including:

•Smokingandtobaccousearelong-term historic causes of oral can-cer.

•Heavyalcoholusemakesyoumore likely to develop oral cancer.

•TheHPVvirus,asexually-trans-mitted disease, is the leading cause of oropharyngeal (the back part of the mouth) cancer.

Make sure to talk to your dentist immediately if you notice any of these

symptoms in yourself or a loved one. The symptoms of oral cancer include:

•Soresinthemouththatbleedeasily or do not heal

•Athickorhardspotorlump•Aroughenedorcrustedarea•Numbness,painortenderness•Achangeinthewayyourteethfit

together when you bite downA thorough oral cancer screening

takes less than five minutes. When found early, oral cancers have an 80 to 90 percent survival rate. Unfortunately, most oral cancers — particularly types caused by HPV — are discovered at later stages of development resulting in an unnecessarily high death rate.

Dentists can be a first line of de-fense in identifying abnormalities in

the mouth, which could be signs of oral cancer. Many people do not real-ize that oral cancer screenings are a routine part of a more extensive exam performed during routine visits to the dentist.

Regular dental exams / checkups in our office now include this oral can-cer screening. We use OralID for Oral screening. For more information, check out the videos at http://suwaneeden-tist.biz/2016/04/01/OralCancer ."A two minute exam could save your life!”

Know your risk for prediabetes(NAPSI)—While many people are fa-miliar with type 2 diabetes, fewer are aware of prediabetes, a serious health condition that affects 86 million Ameri-cans—more than one in three—and can often lead to type 2 diabetes.

The ProblemNearly 90 percent of those with pre-

diabetes don’t know they have it. People with prediabetes have higher than normal blood glucose (sugar), but not at levels high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. When you have predia-betes, you’re at increased risk for other serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease. If left untreated, current research esti-mates that 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.

The Good NewsFortunately, prediabetes can often

be reversed through weight loss, diet changes and increased physical activ-ity. The key is to find out early whether you’re at risk. That’s why the American Diabetes Association, the American Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have partnered with the Ad Council to launch a public service campaign to raise awareness of prediabetes and help those who have the condition take steps to reverse it.

Learn The Risk FactorsThere are a number of risk factors

that increase the likelihood of predia-betes. These include race and ethnicity (African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders and some Asian Americans are at higher risk); being overweight; not being physically active; having a

parent, brother or sister with type 2 diabetes; having high blood pressure; and being over the age of 40.

Know Where You StandFind out if you may have prediabe-

tes by taking the short online test at www.DoIHavePrediabetes.org. You can also text RISKTEST to 97779 to take the test through your phone or mobile device.

Take Steps To Reverse The Condi-tion

You can take steps to reduce your risk by managing your weight, getting active, eating healthier and quitting smoking.

Here are hints that can help:1. Losing just 5 to 7 percent of your

body weight can slow or even reverse prediabetes. For a person who weighs 200 pounds, that’s only 10 to 15 pounds.

2. Set realistic goals. Start with one change in your diet and build from there.

3. Get at least 2½ hours of light aer-obic activity per week. This could be as simple as going for a brisk 30-minute walk five days a week. Even 10 minutes at a time adds up.

4. Find simple ways to be more ac-tive throughout the day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away from the entrance of a storefront when you shop.

5. Try to cut down on foods with saturated fat or trans fat, and hydroge-nated fat or partially hydrogenated fat. Check labels to help you make healthy choices. Just remember, low-fat doesn’t have to be low on flavor. Roast, broil, grill, steam or bake instead of fry.

6. If you smoke, talk with your doc-

tor about treatments or programs that can help you quit.
