The NMCPHC HPW Department welcomes Anthony Charles Barkley, Public Health Educator, to the staff. Anthony has an MS in Educaon and is a rered Army Praccal Nurse. Aſter rering from the Army in 2007, Anthony worked in public health in CA, health promoon as a civilian for the Army in Korea and in health promoon for the Veteran’s Administraon in IL. Anthony’s inial responsibilies will be to assist with coordinaon of the ShipShape Program, Weight Management, reducing risk of chronic disease and general HPW Training. Again, we welcome Anthony to the staff! NAVAL HOSPITAL JACKSONVILLE RECEIVES AMBASSADOR FOR HEALTH GOLD STAR AWARD Naval Hospital (NH) Jacksonville was awarded March 31 the first Ambassadors for Health Gold Star recognion for achieving the highest naonal standards for a tobacco- free workplace during a ceremony with Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. Jonathan Woodson and Prevenon Partners. Ambassadors for Health, one of many pilot programs within the DoD’s Healthy Base Iniave (HBI), started in 2014 to specifically focus on encouraging healthy lifestyles for the health care providers and military treatment facility staff that care for service members and their families, and serve as a wellness model for the rest of the DOD community. NMCPHC HEALTH PROMOTION AND WELLNESS (HPW) DEPARTMENT WELCOMES NEW STAFF MEMBER!

The NMCPHC HPW Department welcomes Anthony Charles Barkley, Public Health Educator, to the staff. Anthony has an MS in Education and is a retired Army Practical Nurse. After retiring from the Army in 2007, Anthony worked in public health in CA, health promotion as a civilian for the Army in Korea and in health promotion for the Veteran’s Administration in IL.

GETTING READY TO RUN YOUR FIRST 5K?

If you have never been a runner, but want to get started, a 5K (3.1 miles) is the perfect length to aim for as a beginner.

Start by setting a realistic training schedule, such as a walk/run routine, to keep you motivated and give yourself ample time to move to the next higher level.

Beginning a running program is a great way to get in shape and to improve your sense of health and well-being. It will build on your cardiovascular system and boost your self-esteem as you gain confidence. If running outside, it may strengthen your ties within your community, while also allowing you to appreciate the outdoors.

THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION’S DIVISION OF NUTRITION, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, AND OBESITY (DNPAO) ANNOUNCES ONLINE INTERACTIVE DATABASEThe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) is pleased to announce the launch of its new online Data, Trends & Maps interactive database.

What is the Data, Trends & Maps database? It is an interactive tool that provides state-specific behavior, policy, and environmental indicators from multiple data sources about obesity, nutrition, physical activity, and breastfeeding. You can view statistics in a variety of formats, including maps, tables, and trend lines in the areas of:
