INTRODUCTION
How to use this curriculum:
The purpose of this curriculum is to provide instructors with basic tools and
information for conducting health and safety trainings for immigrant and low
wage workers.
Before beginning the training, the instructor should make sure that the
classroom is set up in a way that will maximize learning. This curriculum is
most effective when students are seated at tables of 4-5 students in a
classroom containing 5-6 tables. Where possible, students working in similar
situations should sit in the same small group.
Each chapter contains an introductory overview with the objectives of that
chapter. Instructors should share these objectives with the class before
beginning the lesson, either by writing it on the chalkboard or flipchart at the
front of the room or by verbally conveying the information to the class.
This curriculum is designed to be used in locations with minimal access to
technology. All of the pages that do not contain directions for the instructors
can be used as handouts or overhead slides. [Directions for the activities or
lessons for instructors appear throughout the curriculum in a blue or shaded
box.]
Materials needed for this training are: classroom, 5-6 tables, 20-30 chairs,
chalkboard or flipchart, butcher paper, 2-3 markers per table, and copies of
handouts for each student.
This curriculum can be used in its entirety or in parts, depending on the needs
of the student population. The activities and group presentations may be
lengthened or shortened depending on time constraints.
How adults learn best:
Adults learn best through active participation in the learning process, and not
by passively listening to information. These modules are designed to
encourage classroom discussion and participation.
This curriculum includes instructions for activities that facilitate learning the
material. Instructors are encouraged to use the activities in this book, but are
not limited from creating their own educational activities to suit the needs of
their student population.

Small Group Activity Method:
Many of the activities in this book are based on the Small Group Activity
Method (SGAM.) The structure consists of having students work on the
activities in their small groups, report their findings back to the larger group,
and having the instructor summarize the reports and highlight key points to the
class.
The SGAM method is based on the idea that learning is not a one-way street
from the instructor to the student. SGAM is structured so that students can
learn from each other, the instructor can learn from the students, and the
students can learn from the instructor.
Students learn from each other by working together in small groups.
Instructors understand that students can have a great deal of collective
knowledge and life experience that may exceed their own, and that they have
much to learn from them. Finally, by summarizing and highlighting important
information, instructors are able to clarify points and make sure students come
away with the correct information.

correcta.

CHAPTER 1
HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE OF
IN-HOME HEALTHCARE WORKERS
CAPITULO 1
SALUD Y SEGURIDAD EN EL SITIO DE TRABAJO PARA
CUIDADORES DE LA SALUD EN EL HOGAR O RESIDENCIA
Chapter 1 Instructor Overview:
The purpose of this chapter is to provide students with introductory information
on the importance of health and safety in the workplace and to encourage
students to think of ways in which health and safety issues affect them and
their communities. The chapter also contains an activity highlighting the issue
of job fear.
As an icebreaker before beginning this chapter, you may ask workers if they or
someone they know have suffered from an injury in their workplaces. Have the
workers talk to each other in small groups about their experiences. They can
talk to each other for about five minutes and whether they think their work is
dangerous.
For Activity 1-1, the instructor should present the facts to the class, either
verbally or through overheads or handouts, depending on the needs of the
class. The students can then work in their small groups to answer the
questions concerning Rosa’s situation and present their findings to the class.
Alternatively, the class can work together to answer the questions as a group.
The remaining information in the chapter can be provided to the students in
the same manner as in Activity 1-1 (verbally or through overheads or handouts,
depending on the needs of the class.) The students should work with their
small groups and use this information and their personal experiences to
answer the questions in the review section at the end of the chapter. The
groups can then take turns reporting their answers to the rest of the class.
ACTIVITY 1-1
Job Fear
Three months ago, Rosa came to the U.S. from Guatemala with the hope of
finding work and sending money to her family. Rosa left her children behind to
the care of her mother. She only knows a few words of English.
Last week, Rosa began working taking care of Susana, an elderly lady. Susana
always asks Rosa to help her take a shower. Two days ago, while helping
Susana, Rosa slipped in the bathroom and hurt her ankle but she didn’t say
anything. Even though she has pain, she has kept on working. She has not
gone to the doctor.
Questions for discussion:
Why do you think Rosa doesn’t want to say anything to her employer?
What would you advise Rosa?
Does it make a difference if Rosa has “papers” or not?
What would you do in this situation?
ACTIVIDAD 1-1
ACTIVITY 1-1 – JOB FEAR
POSSIBLE ANSWERS
Rosa is afraid of losing her job.
She does not speak English, needs the income, and may have immigration
issues.
Answers may vary, but Rosa should be encouraged to discuss the issue with
her employer. She may suffer more serious injuries with the passage of time.
.
ACTIVIDAD 1-1 – MIEDO EN EL TRABAJO
POSIBLE RESPUESTAS

CAPITULO 2
RECONOCIMIENTO DE PELIGROS EN EL TRABAJO
Chapter 2 Instructor Overview:
The purpose of this chapter is to provide students with the tools to recognize
different kinds of hazards in their workplaces. Students will learn to identify
safety and health hazards and will be able to map where those hazards are
located in their workplaces.
RECOGNIZING WORKPLACE HAZARDS
What are workplace hazards?
A hazard is anything that can cause us harm, physically or mentally. The
hazard is that which can cause the harm, not the harm itself. For example, a
cut is not a hazard but a knife that could cause the cut is.
Types of hazards
Safety hazards
Health hazards, which include:
Physical
Chemical, and
Biological hazards
Additional hazards (stress, violence, ergonomic hazards, etc.)

Ask students to think of the following questions:
● What type of work do you do?
● What hazards exist in your workplace?
● Are there working conditions that you suspect may be hazards but are not
sure?
● What is the most dangerous task that you were ever asked to perform?
● Have you almost been seriously injured or killed? How?
● What is the most dangerous thing you ever saw another worker do?
● Have you ever been on a job where a worker was seriously injured? What
was the hazard?
Their answers will guide the next activity.
Distribute the fact sheets in the following pages to the students.

ACTIVITY 2-1
Hazard Map
Students will work in their small groups to create maps of different types of
workplaces. They can use butcher paper and markers. To begin, students
should draw a floor plan of a workplace in the industry where they work. The
plan should show rooms, work areas, equipment, windows and doors. The
maps can be very basic.
When they are finished, each group will decide where the hazards are located
in their workplaces. Using the fact sheets as a reference, students should
mark those places on the floor plan with their markers. Use the following
codes:
• Red for safety and physical hazards
• Blue for chemical and biological hazards.
• Green for additional hazards.
You may use other color codes or symbols depending on the needs on your
class. You may also, for example, use different colors each for safety hazards,
physical hazards, chemical hazards, and biological hazards. **Keep in mind
that the most important goal of this exercise is for students to identify the
hazards in their workplace and not get hung up on which category it fits into or
the fine points of whether it’s a dust, mist, or vapor.**
If a student is not sure whether something is a hazard, they should mark it as a
hazard and discuss it with the group.
Students should work in small groups according to the industry in which they
work. If there are many students from varied industries, they can choose to
map out other workplaces such as construction, landscaping, restaurants,
cleaning, meatpacking/poultry. There can be several groups mapping the
same industries.
Students should take 15 minutes to prepare the maps, and then present them
to the group.
The final map can look like the map on the following page.
ACTIVIDAD 2-1

ACTIVITY 2-2
Body Mapping
Hand out a sheet with a diagram of a human body, from the front and
from the back (such as the diagram on the previous page) to each
student. Have a large version of the same diagram on the chalkboard or
flipchart at the front of the classroom.
Ask the students to mark with an “X” the parts of the body that they
believe are being affected by their work. After they are done, have them
come up to the front to mark the diagram at the front of the classroom.
The final diagram can look something like the picture below.
Explain to the students that they can speak with you individually if they
do not want to share their injury or illness with the group.
Ask students to explain why they put their marks on the body.
Point out the injuries and illnesses that are common among workers in
certain industries.
Have the class participate in a discussion about this, with questions such
as why they think these injuries occur, what can they do to reduce the
chance of injury, etc.
ACTIVITY 2-2
Example of Body Map.
ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS

CONTROLLING WORKPLACE HAZARDS
CAPITULO 3
CONTROLAR LOS PELIGROS EN EL TRABAJO
Chapter 3 Instructor Overview:
The purpose of this chapter is to build on the previous activity of mapping
workplace hazards and to encourage students to think about ways in which
these hazards can be controlled.
For this chapter the instructor should provide the students with the information
contained in the following pages, either verbally or through overheads or
handouts, depending on the needs of the class. The students should work with
their small groups and use this information and their personal experiences to
guide their responses to the activity and review questions. Each group can
then take turns sharing their answers with the rest of the class.
CONTROLLING WORKPLACE HAZARDS
The best way to control a health and safety hazard in the workplace is to
eliminate the hazard!
Controlling at-home hazards benefits you and your client.
When approaching your employer because of a health and safety hazard,
offer your ideas on how the hazard can be eliminated or controlled.

Elimination
The best way to control a hazard is to eliminate it entirely. It is best to do
this as early as possible. An example of elimination would be to use
latex-free gloves if the worker or the client are allergic to that compound.
By using gloves that contain no latex you have eliminated the hazard.
Substitution
When a hazard cannot be eliminated completely, the second best
alternative is substituting the dangerous condition. The idea is to
substitute chemicals, equipment, or hazardous materials with ones that
are less hazardous. . Another example is to use less hazardous cleaning
products. A potential problem is when the product being used as a
substitute is as dangerous as the original. For this reason, it is important
to find out if the product is truly less hazardous than the original.
Engineering controls
Engineering controls are another way that technology can be used to
change the work environment, a machine, or some equipment in order to
reduce the hazard. For example, using a Hoyer lift rather than
overexcerting to lift the patient, guardrails, covers, slip resistant
surfaces.
usar productos limpiadores menos peligrosos.
cargarlos.
Administrative controls
Administrative Controls or changing labor practices means changing the
way and the structure of how work is done. Example: instead of asking
the patient to take a bath, he or she can take a shower while sitting on a
plastic chair; this practice reduces the risk of injury to the patient while
the homecare worker avoids overexertion.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment (PPE) can include gloves, respirators,
and protective wear for the eyes, ears, and face. PPE is the least
efficient way to protect workers because it does not get rid of the
hazardous situation. If equipment fails, workers are still exposed to the
risk.
Controles administrativos
Controles administrativos o cambiar prácticas laborales significa
IN-HOME HAZARDS AND HOW TO CONTROL THEM
Physical and Safety Hazards:
Lifting and moving clients from beds to wheelchairs or from wheelchairs
into bathtubs can cause back injuries to homecare workers.
Wet floors, scatter rugs, or greasy floors can cause slipping, tripping, and
falling.
Clutter can make the worker or the client trip and fall.
Frayed cords can cause electrical shocks or even fires.
Overloaded electric outlets are an electrical and fire hazard.
Unattended stoves pose risks for burns and fire.
Damaged oxygen tanks could be explosive.
Controls:
Ask your client to get a Hoyer Lift or a gait belt and a slide transfer board
Make sure the house is free of clutter
Make sure to mop dry wet spots.
Biological Hazards:
Human blood and body fluids might contain bloodborne viruses like
hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV (virus that causes AIDS).
Bloodborne diseases are transmitted by getting the patient’s blood or
genital fluids into the body. This could happen if the homecare worker
gets stuck with a contaminated syringe, lancet or needle.
Contagious infectious diseases by viruses or bacteria can be transmitted
from the patient to the home care worker. The common cold and the flu
are spread by shaking hands with an infected person and then touching
your nose or mouth with your hand.
Bacteria can cause various infections like staph infection. Many staph
infections occur when patients use in-home catheters or IVs.
Tuberculosis (TB) which is caused by bacteria is spread from person to
person through the air or by contact with sputum from patients with
active infection.
Controls:
Wash your hands frequently. Disinfect with bleach solution areas that
might be contaminated with virus or bacteria. Remember to use gloves
to avoid direct contact with contaminants and chemicals.
Use a safe needle disposal box, sharp container or “red box”
Get a vaccine for Hepatitis B, or for both Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B.
Cover any cuts, sores or breaks in the patient or the caregiver’s skin with
bandages
Treat all body fluids, feces, or vomit as if they were contaminated with a
very contagious virus (Hepatitis B, C or HIV virus).
Peligros Biologicos:
VIH)
Chemical Hazards:
All cleaning chemicals including bleach, ammonia, disinfectants, drain
cleaners; oven cleaners, etc contain chemicals that can be irritants to
the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
Mixing Clorox with ammonia produces toxic gases that can kill a person.
Avoid mixing cleaners.
Fumes from client’s cigarettes can irritate the lungs of the caregiver.
Controls:
Use low toxicity cleaning products. A solution of white vinegar and water
is a good substitute for floor cleaning products.
Replace caps and store cleaning products in a safe storage place
Do not mix cleaning products
Use gloves and safety glasses to avoid chemicals in your eyes and skin.
cuidador(a)
Controles:
Other Hazards:
Stress from workload or lack of control over work planning can increase
muscle tension, high pressure, and headaches.
Stress from dying clients or client’s worsening health condition can
produce depression to the caregiver.
Workplace violence cause of injuries to caregivers, homecare workers
are at a risk of suffering a violent assault two times higher than other
workers in the US. Home health care workers enter a workplace that is
unprotected and unpredictable every time they visit a new client.
Violence includes verbal assault, threats of assault, and physical
assaults. Also, attacks from aggressive pets (dogs, cats)
Ergonomic hazards are present when the body of the homecare worker
gets in awkward positions or overexert the capacity in order to get the job
done. For example lifting the client, overstretching to reach objects,
kneeling for long periods, etc.
Pests such as mice, rats or roaches can transmit diseases to the worker
and to the client.
Controls:
Watch for signals of impending violence such as verbal aggression,
anger, frustration, and use of alcohol or drugs.
Use long-hadled duster, mop and scrub to avoid over strechting. Use
stepstool to reach objects in higher shelfs.
Handrails, plastic chair, and hand-held shower for the patient. A stool for
the homecare workers assisting during the shower.
La violencia en el lugar de trabajo produce lesiones a los trabajadores;
ACTIVITY 3-1
Applying Workplace Hazard Controls
Ask the students to use the hazard maps that they developed in the previous
exercise and to work with their same groups to choose one hazard from their
maps that they believe is important.
The students should then take 5-10 minutes to prepare a short skit where they
as workers approach their employer to discuss ways that the employer can
control the workplace hazard. Students should incorporate at least one of the
hazard control methods listed in this chapter.
Depending on the needs and size of the classroom, some students can act as
employers and others as employees, or the instructors and facilitators can act
as employers. If possible, each student should have a speaking role.
ACTIVITAD 3-1
