Tuesdays are reward celebration days at Shenley – when I get the chance to show my appreciation of the hard work and contribution which so many of our students make to our academy each day through upholding the Shenley values. This week I met with a group of students who have shown kindness to others in the academy through fundraising for charity; for their outstanding contributions to international Dance Day; for outstanding contributions to school sports teams and for amazing contributions to form assemblies. On top of this we were joined by Mr Wood (Head of Saturn College) and the Y7 Basketball team. They came along to share the story of their success in winning their age group basketball championship across Birmingham schools. They talked us through the final match which they played. They’d been trailing going into the final quarter, but this was a situation which they knew called for resilience and self-belief and so together they were able to dig deep inside themselves and pull together as a team to come out triumphant. As they told the story to the rest of the students who had also been asked to join me for a breaktime cup of tea, glass of squash and a biscuit (or two!), we could all see the pride which they had in their achievement. And quite rightly so. To be able to recognise that the going will be tough, and to know that you can overcome this with the support of the rest of the team is a great confidence to have. It was with great pride that I presented the team with their team trophy, and individual medals. The trophy will be displayed in the PE trophy cabinets, but the boys will be able to wear their medals with pride – until they win their next trophy, which judging by their determination won’t be that long! ICT @Shenley Academy – A year 7s perspective

ICT has been different at Shenley Academy from primary school in many ways, for example, we ae able to learn more advanced skills and have much more independence. In ICT, we have learnt how to assure that we are safe online whilst using social media. We have also learnt how to organise folders and conduct simple programming using Scratch.

Personally, I have really enjoyed the independence you get as I was able to create my own game on Scratch and experiment with different programming skills I learnt. The skills I would like to develop are understanding programming in Scratch and use different programming software. I feel that ICT will help me in the future because I would really like to be able to learn to do more complex programming and use this in my future career.

My trip to Jaguar Land Rover

On the day, we were expected to be in school uniform and bring our own pack lunch. When we arrived we were led to a large room, we all sat down and were introduced to the company and the people who we would be working with we were told about STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) the main qualifications needed in an engineering based job. We started off with a task where there was an example of engineering on the big screen then there were types of engineering around the room which we had to stand next to which one we thought it was. This was great activity learning about engineering and has a bit of fun at the same time. We all had a tour around the premises of JLR which was increasable seeing all the machines moving and making parts. We had to wear yellow high Vis vest for safety reasons. We were also given a clip boards between four people to fill out during the tour to try and spot things or gather certain information. They showed us a bird’s eye view of where we went and so that we could clearly see how big there facilities were. When we went back to the class room we spoke more about the company itself and how they came together and what other companies they have worked with in the past.I really enjoyed this trip even though I have no interest in a job which involves engineering I still though it was a really great experience and I would recommend it to anyone if the opportunity comes up again.

Innovation, Communication & Enterprise (ICE)Jaguar Land Rover Trip- By Gabrielle Milton

Recently, I went on a trip to Jaguar Land rover in Solihull with some of the Product Design and Business Faculty and some of my friends from my business and product design class, so that we could gain experience about the world of engineering, apprenticeships and how the company works. We started the day by taking a 40 minute drive to their factory in Solihull. When we were arrived, we were taken to a meeting room where we met with two other schools. The tour guide, who also worked in customer service for Jaguar Land Rover gave us a presentation, telling us everything about what their section of Jaguar Land Rover does. I found out that they only made engines, mostly diesel, and I also found out that Land Rover, Range Rover and Discovery cars are all produced by Land rover.

After the presentation, we were taken on a tour around the building. We first saw a blood pressure machine that each employee has to use often to make sure that they’re healthy. One thing that I really liked about the tour was the big wall of autographs and next to it was an employee of the month chart. We were taken into the diesel engine section, which was well looked after, colourful and organised; there were markings on the floor where each crate and other tems are placed. Once we got back to the meeting room we were given a task to make a replica, functional engine, but with plastic parts. We did this not only to test our engineering skills but also our leadership skills. We split into teams and were timed; we had to assign someone as manager, someone as supervisor, someone as perfectionist etc.

Our team managed to build the engine in a matter of two minutes while beating all the other teams and making a new Jaguar Land Rover record. So the end of the trip was approaching, but before we left, we, as a split group, had a little interview with current workers there and apprentices and I can truly say that it really benefited me. The workers there said they truly enjoyed working there and one of the seniors said that he worked in the Royal Air Force before joining Jaguar Land Rover. Unfortunately that was the end of the day but it was possibly one of best, most informative trips I’ve been on in the whole of my Shenley Academy experience. I would definitely hope that the Jaguar Land Rover trip continues at Shenley Academy .

Year 11 Controlled Assessment

Well done to year 11 pupils for creating their own master chef style dishes as part of their controlled assessment. Pupils planned, prepared and cooked three dishes within three hours. It was all part of the food and nutrition course where pupils are challenged to make different dishes with a European theme. Italy seemed to be popular with Lasagne and Cannelloni as main dishes.

The course allows pupils to explore different cooking methods and learn what nutrients we need to stay healthy. Staff were pleasantly surprised with the variety of dishes to taste and the effort that pupils had put in to create the dishes.

Well done to the following pupils.

Student Leadership Team

Shenley Academy Student Leadership Team Announced! After receiving a huge amount of applications for the new student leadership positions, interviews took place throughout the day on Tuesday 8th May.  The students were naturally nervous, but performed brilliantly.  We were massively impressed by the maturity with which they approached the daunting challenge and the way that they answered the questions posed; we have many very talented students in our school. Throughout the interviews, students had many brilliant ideas about student mentoring, break time clubs and charity campaigns.  It is a prestigious opportunity to be part of the first leadership team and the successful candidates should be very proud of their achievements.  We were also very impressed by those who were unsuccessful and they should take confidence from getting so far through the process. Look out for further information about our new leadership team, the summer residential and the work that they will carrying out to make Shenley Academy an even greater place to be!
