Congratulations!

Last week we held the interviews for the student leadership team for 2018-19. This will be the first time in Shenley’s recent history that we will welcome a student leadership team into the academy, and before I say well done and welcome to those who have been successfully appointed, I want to say well done to all of those who were pipped to the post at the interview stage. This was a really difficult process for all of us as there were so many strong candidates, and it was wonderful to listen to your pride in our school, your plans for our future and your display of the core Shenley values. Next week we will welcome them to their new roles and start their training and development so that they are ready to take up the student leadership of the academy as we wave good-bye to Y11 and Y13. Every single one of them has high hopes and ambitions for themselves and our school, and I look forward to supporting them to realise those ambitions over the next 12 months. From our leadership development camp to fortnightly meetings with, assemblies with pupils and leading staff and parent forums, I know that we have an exciting year ahead.

Inspire, aspire and achieve are our core values, and every single member of our new team lives those values, and I know that you will join me in saying: ‘Congratulations one and all!’.

With best wishes

Safeguarding Information

Why is attendance such a big deal

TRUE - A student with 100%

attendance is nearly three times more

likely to achieve an excellent set of

grades (with English and Maths) than

someone with 85% attendance.

Attending school makes a BIG

difference, and will positively impact on your future choices!

TRUE – There are 175 non school days in a year! That is an incredible amount

of time to spend on family time,

holidays, shopping, household jobs and

appointments.

Nearly 48% of the days in the year are non school

days. It would be ridiculous to miss

school without good reason.

Attendance*= school target

GOOD NEWS – By being in school you are increasing your overall attendance record and giving yourself the very

best chance of building for a successful future.

Attendance Information

With the change in weather it has been great to see an increase in the number of student’s cycling to the Academy. Whilst the vast majority are doing so safely we unfortunately have a small number of students who are showing a complete lack of respect to road safety and towards members of our local community. Please can we remind parents/carers that it is your responsibility to ensure your son/daughter is not only safe on the roads but also being respectful citizens. If this small minority of students continue to behave in an antisocial and dangerous manner while traveling to and from the Academy we will have no option other than to report it to the West Midlands Police and ban them from bringing their bike.

Shenley Horizons

This week students took part in a school wide poster competition. The aim of the competition was to create a poster that informs and inspires students and staff of the academy to maintain positive mental health.

This competition is part of a bigger plan of action unfolding over the coming months.

The task force, led by a group of outstanding year nine students, are on a mission to improve mental health and wellbeing in the academy, so look out for exciting events coming soon.  There were over 50 fantastic entries, but only three could win.

They were:

Nadine Talib M7

Tamara Morgan S5

Charlotte Lane N10

Each of these entries will be used as a template for resources that will be created professionally and displayed throughout the school site.   Well done.

Performing & Creative Arts

On Friday 27th April 2018, the Shenley Academy Dance Department put on the International Dance Day event. The lead up towards the show consisted of many rehearsals as well as the individual dancers having to get as many sponsors as they could. Our International Dance Day event involved performing throughout the whole school day, from 8.45am to 3.00pm, raising money for both a chosen charity and the dance department. Dancers performed solos, duets, trios and group dances in a variety of different dance styles from contemporary to urban to acrobatics.

After a tiring yet amazing day, we, as a dance community, are proud to announce that we raised over £400 in total.

This is an incredible achievement for both the academy and the dancers who took part in the whole day of performances. We would personally like to thank the dance teachers, Miss Rowell and Mrs Edie-Pabla for their continuous support leading up to and during the day. Also Mr Long for being our amazing music and lighting go-to, making the performances look professional, but mainly the dancers, for their hard work and commitment they put into the success of the day.

Congratulations to ALL students for the money they raised but a particular HUGE well done to Scarlett Hannam for raising over £65!

In line with the introduction of new legislation (the General Data Protection Regulation), we are contacting pupils and parents / carers to ensure we have the proper consent to hold any biometric data in compliance with the updated legal requirements.

A letter has been issued to your child this week and must be returned by Thursday 24th May 2018 otherwise any previously set up biometric data account for your child will be deactivated in order to comply with GDPR.

This will mean that until you return the completed consent form, your child will not be able to allocate funds to their meal account in school and if you wish for them to continue to purchase food from the school canteen, you will need to use ParentPay to top up your account.

For those of you who haven’t yet activated your ParentPay account, please email [email protected] for your ParentPay username and password.

You may download a copy of the letter below which contains further information to ensure it is returned before the deadline.

Venus CollegeI feel honoured to lead Venus College. Within the college we all collectively care about the well-being and development of each individual student. It’s a privilege to witness; on a daily basis the outstanding lengths which students go to in order to achieve their best and get the most from their education as well as the opportunities offered to them. I am continually impressed by the lengths which students go to in order to overcome barriers and work collectively, supporting one another to succeed.

I have witnessed students across all year groups within Venus College build their confidence and resilience which are two crucial characteristics to enable students to develop their academic and personal capabilities. This is achieved through their dedication in the classroom but also their approach towards extra-curricular activities and the work completed outside of school.

The students in Venus College are wonderfully supported by Ms Blanchette, our Pastoral Support Manager. In addition, my team of form tutors show such brilliant commitment to supporting your children both academically and personally every single day.

Below are some of the amazing things which have been taking place within the college this half term and the contributions students have been making to the success of the academy..

Venus College‘Venturing towards Venus!’

A chance to hear some of the amazing work which has taken place within Venus College.

International Dance DayOn Friday the 27th of April my friend Megan and I performed on International Dance Day. We performed in multiple dances mainly together in a variety of contemporary styles. It was a fun but busy and stressful day for the dancers who participated, especially us because we had many dances, quick changes and taking care of our younger dancers in year 7. We were in a trio with Leonie Whitton about sisterhood and friendship. As Megan and I are very close we can use that in our dances to make them realistic and we can always motivate and support each other if we are worried about something. We both have huge respect for Mr Long, Misss Rowell and Mrs Edie-Pabla and their massive amount of enthusiasm and time they put in for the dancers. Their dedication to all helped to make the show a huge success.

Venus College Cake SaleOver the past week I have been working with Mr Coy and the Venus College Council to plan a bake sale with all proceeds going towards my trip and fundraiser for the world scout jamboree. The money will be going towards the general funds of worldwide scouting, developing and assisting payment towards volunteers and equipment and countries that need financial assistance to make it. On Monday 14th May, myself and some volunteers got into the kitchens and with the help of Miss Bhandal and Mr Coy, made a variety of cakes and biscuits to sell. On Tuesday 15th May we then sold the cakes across both break times and successfully selling out, resulting in a total raised of £101.70. This is a fantastic contribution towards the grand total needed. I’d like to thank everyone that took part or bought a cake; this was an amazing gesture of kindness.

REWARDS

As we head towards the final week of this half term it is important to highlight the huge number of students who are being rewarded each week for getting things right.

During Friday afternoon form time for the last three weeks over 700 students have received rewards for their attendance and or their positive attitude on a day to day basis. Next week we will be holding rewards afternoons where Colleges will invite students in years 7 – 11 to attend as recognition of what they have achieved this half term. In addition to this we will be taking a large number of students (8 coaches) to Drayton Manor in just over 6 academic weeks so please continue to support your son/daughter in maintaining high attendance and making the correct decisions both in lessons and around the Academy. To be eligible for the end of year trips students must have maintained good attendance throughout the Summer term and have less than 10 negative behaviour logs.
