God’s grace welcomes you, no matter who you are or where you are from—and so do we. We

believe that Jesus Christ is the true Savior of all people. By his perfect life, innocent death, and

triumphant resurrection he saves all lost sinners even without our help. Jesus Christ makes us

special people, right with God and ready for life! We learn this from the Bible, God’s authentic

message of grace and guidance for us. Whether you are a first time visitor or a returning

guest, we are delighted to share our worship with you. You are always welcome here. If there

is anything we can do to make your visit more comfortable, please let us know. The restrooms

are located down the hall opposite the sanctuary, and there is also a cry room with toys across

from the coat racks. Please worship with us again soon!

O Splendor of God’s Glory Bright

Christian Worship 586

1 The name of the triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms.

2 “The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners” (The Small Catechism, First: What is the use of the keys?). See John 20:21-23.

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son 9 and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

P: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in

the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us. C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, For sins of habit and sins of choice, For the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

P: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us

alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the word of Christ through his called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son 9 and of the Holy

Spirit. C: Amen.

Please stand.

Kyrie

P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord. For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from you all they

need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: For the spread of your life-giving gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in

sin may be brought to faith in you, hear our prayer, O Christ. C: Christ, have mercy. P: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as

we await your return, hear our prayer, O Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. P: Lord of life, live in us that we may live for you. C: Amen.

3 Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church. See Mark 10:47.

Please be seated.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray: O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with your never-failing

mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

4 Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things he has done to accomplish our rescue from sin. “Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century. See Luke 2:14.

5 This greeting has deep roots in Christian worship and marks the beginning of the Word section and the Sacrament section (page 11) of the service.

Gloria in Excelsis

Sung to the tune CW 152, “I Know that My Redeemer Lives”

1: All glory be to God on high! 2: Our grateful thanks to you we bring, Your name, O Lord, we glorify; For your great glory, heav’nly King, We praise you for your peace and grace, For all, O Father, you have done Your favor toward our fallen race. Through Jesus Christ, your only Son. 3: O Lamb of God, to you we pray. 4: You, Christ, are holy—Lord alone; You take all human sin away. The Father’s glory you made known. Have mercy, Lord; receive our prayer; We by your Spirit sing again: From God’s right hand, your mercy share. “All glory be to God!” Amen.

Judges 16:22-31

22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved. 23 Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, “Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands.” 24 When the people saw him, they praised their god, saying,

“Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands,

the one who laid waste our land and multiplied our slain.”

25 While they were in high spirits, they shouted, “Bring out Samson to entertain us.” So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.

When they stood him among the pillars, 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “O Sovereign Lord, remember me. O God, please strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

31 Then his brothers and his father’s whole family went down to get him. They brought him back and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had led Israel twenty years.

6 The congregation stands and speaks words of acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.

Galatians 6:12-16 12 Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 Not even those who are circumcised obey the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh. 14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. 16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God.

(Jeremiah 15:16 RSV) P: Alleluia. Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart. Alleluia. Please stand.6

Matthew 16:21-26 P: The Gospel according to Matthew chapter 16. C: Glory be to you, O Lord.

21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ.

Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me Christian Worship 428

Galatians 6:12-16

Following the sermon, please stand for the confession of faith.

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

Please be seated.

7 The Hymn of the Day is assigned to this day because of its rich content and connection to the day’s Gospel.

8 Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity.

Page 9: He Must Take Up His Cross 15 - 9.2… · the name of our Lord Jesus hrist to forgive us. : Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish

10 The members of Grace Lutheran Church have joined together to do the Lord’s work in this community and around the world. Guests need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry.

9 The original text here reads “catholic,” a word meaning “universal.” The Church consists of all believers in heaven and on earth, of every time in history.

Please be seated.

Please stand.

P: O Lord, our God, you are wise and powerful, good and gracious. Your mercies are new

every morning. Each day you open your hand and provide for the needs of your children on earth.

C: We praise you for every grace and blessing. P: Strengthen your Church in all the world. Let your comforting message of salvation in

Christ Jesus be proclaimed to troubled souls everywhere. C: Use our ministries and offerings to extend your healing and your hope. P: We bring you our requests for the various structures of our society. Bless our national,

state (provincial), and local governments. C: Grant us civil servants who are worthy of honor and respect. P: Grant prosperity to our businesses and industries. Give employers a sense of fairness

toward their workers, and employees a feeling of joy and pride in their workmanship. C: Help us find satisfaction in all work well done.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian9 and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Page 10: He Must Take Up His Cross 15 - 9.2… · the name of our Lord Jesus hrist to forgive us. : Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish

11 The words of the Preface mark the beginning of the Sacrament section of the service and lift the worshipers’ hearts in praise. The opening sentences are among the oldest in the Christian liturgy.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do.

P: Invigorate the schools of our land. Give success to every effort that helps students read, think, and communicate in ways that will promote an informed and responsible citizenry. Arouse curious minds to discover the wonders of your created order.

C: Give us teachers and students who pursue excellence. P: Strengthen the families of our country. Give fathers and mothers a renewed

commitment to be good parents. Give children and young people the wisdom to regard their parents as your representatives.

C: Lead us to love one another as you have loved us. Special prayers.

P: Gracious Father, we pray boldly as Jesus taught, with the confidence that you will hear

and with the faith that you will respond for our welfare. C: Amen.

12 Sanctus means “holy.” Used possibly as early as the second century, this canticle was in wide use among Christians in worship by the fourteenth century.

P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who has called us to be his own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

Sanctus

Sung to the tune of CW 279, “O Word of God Incarnate” 1: O holy, holy, holy 2: Hosanna in the highest! Lord God of pow’r and might, How truly blest is he Your glory, earth and heaven Who in God’s name is coming In countless ways recite. To set his people free! Hosanna! Come and save us, He comes to bring salvation Lord God of hosts on high, And with his blood outpoured, And in your grace and mercy Deliver us from bondage— Receive our fervent cry. Hosanna, mighty Lord!

Page 12: He Must Take Up His Cross 15 - 9.2… · the name of our Lord Jesus hrist to forgive us. : Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish

P: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your

Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.

By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with

repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ’s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting.

C: Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13

C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

13 Jesus took bread and gave thanks (Matthew 26:26).

14 As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for the Lord’s use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death. See Matthew 26:26-28 and 1 Corinthians 11:24,25.

Page 13: He Must Take Up His Cross 15 - 9.2… · the name of our Lord Jesus hrist to forgive us. : Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given

thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my 9 body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you;

this is my 9 blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen.

Agnus Dei

15 Jesus is God’s Lamb (Agnus Dei), who was offered as a sacrifice for sin once for all. See John 1:29.

Christian Worship 465

Please stand.

Grace Lutheran Church is a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Our Church and our Church body practice member communion. Out of respect for our beliefs we please ask that non-members not come forward to receive communion. If you have questions about what Scripture teaches concerning participation in the Lord’s Supper, please speak with the Pastor before or after the service.

16 The Scriptures teach that the celebration of the Lord’s Supper connects us intimately with Christ and with one another as Christians who are united around a common confession of faith.

Nunc Dimittis

Sung to the tune CW 94, “O Jesus, King of Glory”

1: O Lord, now let your servant 2: All glory to the Father, Depart in peace, assured: All glory to the Son, For I have seen your promised All glory to the Spirit, Incarnate, saving Word— Forever three in one; A Light that will enlighten For as in the beginning, All gloom where Gentiles dwell; Is now, shall ever be, The brilliant, crowning glory God’s triune name resounding Of those in Israel! Through all eternity. P: We give you thanks, O Lord, for the foretaste of the heavenly banquet that you have

given us to eat and to drink in this sacrament. Through this gift you have fed our faith, nourished our hope, and strengthened our love. By your Spirit help us to live as your holy people until that day when you will receive us as your guests at the wedding supper of the Lamb, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

17 The Nunc Dimittis (“Now dismiss”) is also known as the “Song of Simeon.” Through God’s Word and Sacrament, we have seen Jesus Christ, and like Simeon we find divine peace and comfort through faith in the Savior. See Luke 2:29-32.
