His Eminence Gangteng Tülku Rinpoche, Kunzang Rigzin Pema Namgyal, born in 1955, is a major Dzogchen master of the Nyingma tradition. Out of the thirty monasteries he is responsible for, Gangtey Gompa - founded by Gyalse Pema Thrinle, the first Gangteng Tülku - is the main one. His Eminence is the emanation of the body of the great tertön Pema Lingpa (1450-1521), who had been recognized as being the reincarnation of Kunkhyen Longchen Rabjampa (i.e. Longchenpa, 1308-1363). His main teachers have been Khyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, Khyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Khyabje Khenchen Rinpoche, Tenzin Töndrub Rinpoche, Penor Rinpoche, and Chatral Rinpoche. His Eminence has spent eleven years of his life in retreat. His teachings deal mainly with the view and practice of Dzogchen. His Eminence's first European teachings were given in Annecy (France), end of 1987. He travels regularly to Europe, United States, and Asia for the purpose of teaching in the different Yeshe Khorlo centers that have been founded with the passing years. His main European center, Pema Yang Dzong, is located in the French area of Jura. The teaching of the « Rigpa Rang-Dröl » The Rigpa Rang-Dröl, i.e. the self-liberation [based on the direct vision enabled by the introduction to] rigpa ("intrinsic awareness"/ state of innate knowledge free of concepts), is part of the Bardo Thödröl (The Tibetan Book of the Dead) -- terma ("treasure" hidden by Guru Rinpoche/ Padmasambhava) discovered in the 14th century by Rigzin Karma Lingpa when he was 15 --, which is itself part of the cycle of the peaceful and wrathful deities. It belongs to the Great Perfection, that teaches a going beyond of the intellect, thanks to the introduction the master gives to the uncreated and crystal-clear dimension of consciousness. Such an introduction breaks through the primary thought- the one that nurtures all others -, the “I” thought. From there may open a breach that will allow one to catch a glimpse, if only for a split second, of the vast and infinite essence of consciousness. Henceforth, there is nothing to contemplate as such, as one has just to be - effortlessly, without mental fabrication, without action - the ultimate reality, that is sheer self-knowledge. The Vajrasattva initiation Vajrasattva (Dorje Sempa in Tibetan), i.e. the Diamond-like Being, symbolizes the primordial purity of consciousness, from which unfold all the maṇḍalas of the peaceful and wrathful deities; this is why he is said to be the lord, the chief of all maṇḍalas. Vajrasattva has also been a great bodhisattva of yesteryear who, as he was perfecting his practice of prayers, vowed, when fully awakened, to help anyone fervently invoking him to be purified of defilements. This is why the hundred (Sanskrit) syllables of his mantra (which, actually, is a heart-prayer) start with "Om Vajra Sattva Samayam Anu-pᾱlaya"/ "Om, Diamond-like Being, keep your word". The repetition of the hundred syllables has been highly valued for centuries by the masters of Vadjrayᾱna Buddhism, since -- when combining unshakable confidence, clarity of vision and memory of the purity (i.e. the symbolized reality) -- it is a powerful means to purify oneself, and hence be in a position to recognize the originally pure and luminous nature of consciousness.
