CalvinDoddMacCracken(1920-1999),anengineerandinventorfromNewJersey,iscreditedwithbuildingthe first “high velocity” style air handler, using smallinsulated ducts to deliver heated air at considerablepressureandhighvelocity.Thissystemquicklygainedinpopularity, andaspublic interestgrew, acompanycalled Space Conditioning Inc. incorporated theMacCracken Forced-Air House Heating Apparatus(Patent 2,488,548) into their product lines. This unitlater became known as the “Jet-Heet” System. Theprimarymarketforthesystemwasretrofitcoolingintohomes that had little room for duct work or in whicharchitecturalchangeswereundesirable.MacCracken’sairhandlerwasbasedontwoscientificprinciples:

Bernoulli’s Principle: (Daniel Bernoulli 1700-1782)Wherethereisdecreasedflow,youwillfindincreasedpressure.Wherethere is increasedflow, youwill finddecreasedpressure.

Bernoulli’s PrincipleBernoulli’s Principle plays an important part in the

operationoftheHi-VelocitySystem.Toillustratehowthisworks, let’s lookat thedynamicsofashowerhead.Withthe showerhead in place, you create pressure in thepipingandmoveasmallamountofwaterquicklythroughthe showerhead holes, with the water being equallydistributedtoeachhole. ThisisverysimilartohowtheairflowworkswiththeHi-VelocitySystem.Ourfancoilpressurizestheductworkjustlikethewaterpipeofyourshower.Ourventoutletsactlike theholes in theshowerheadtoconvert thepressuretovelocity, anddelivertheconditionedairtoyourhome.Sinceairflowandwater flow follow thesameprinciples,youwillgetequalairflowfromalloftheHi-VelocitySystemventsinyourhome.Thisholdstruefromthefirstbranchduct to the lastone, and ismodifiedonlydue to frictionfromlongerlengthsofbranchducts.

With a conventional low velocity forced air-coolingsystem,therulethateveryoneknowsisavolumeof400CubicFeetofairperMinute (CFM) foreach ton.With400CFMatalowstaticpressure,andalargefacearea/thindepthcoil,theairiscooledandasmallamountofhumidityisremoved.WiththeHi-VelocitySystem,weusealowerCFMbuthigherstaticpressuretoaccomplishthesame amount of cooling, removingmore humidity fromtheairintheprocess.

400CFMisadesignruleforconventionalheatingsystemsandwillputanoptimumloadontheindoorcoil.This allows the coil to properly evaporate refrigerantandperformheat transfer.Sinceconventionalheatingsystems use a lower pressure than Hi-VelocitySystemsTM,ahigherairflowisneededtoprovideenoughmassofairtoperformtheheattransfer.Inversely,themore pressure that the air is under, the less CFM isneeded. How this works is on the microscopic level;the amount of airmolecules present through the coildetermineshowmuchheat transfer is done.Underahigherpressuretherearemoreairmoleculespresentpercubicfoot.TheHi-VelocitySystemrequireslessCFMofair topass through theevaporator, whilestillprovidingthesamecoilload.

Withasmuchcoilload(ifnotmore)passingthroughtheevaporator, equalorsuperiorcoolingwill result.Anadditionalbenefittomovingmoreairmoleculesthroughthecoilata lowerrate is the latentcooling. Sincetheair passing through the coil is in contact with the coilsurfaceareaforalongerperiodoftime, thetemperatureisdropped lower thanwithconventional systems, thusreducingtheair’sabilitytoholdmoisture.Ourcoilshavea unique design; they are highly efficient and typicallythicker than coils in conventional cooling systems.Withourstyleofcoolingcoilwewillremoveuptothirtypercentmoremoisturefromtheair.Thishasthebenefitof allowing a greater thermal comfort level, even at ahighertemperature.

Airvelocitycanbeeitherahelporahindrancetothermal comfort levels. While a small amount of airmovement isdesirableto increasetheskinevaporationrate, it has to be a uniformmovement over the entirebody in order to provide benefits to thermal comfortlevels.Anylargeamountsofdirectairvelocityoverapart of the human bodywill cause an uneven rate ofevaporationandheat transfer. This iswhytheventsfortheHi-VelocitySystemareusuallylocatedinlowtrafficareassuchascornersofaroom,ortothesidesofdoorsandwindows.Bylocatingtheventsintheseareas,theamountofdirectairmovementthathumanswillcomeincontactwithwillbeminimized,sincetheventshaveonlyaneight-inchconeofdirectinfluence.

Air temperature, humidity, anddirectair velocityarethe factors that will cause the most change to thermalcomfortlevels.Mostpeoplebelievethatcoldairisthekeyfactorforagoodairconditioningsystem.Consideringthatthehumanbodyhasanaturalcoolingsystembuiltin,thekeytocreatingacomfortableenvironmentforthehumanbody is tocreate therightcombinationofenvironmentalfactors.

Parameters that describe thermal comfort. • Airtemperature

• Wet-bulbtemperature

• Dewpointtemperature

• Watervaporpressure

• Totalatmosphericpressure

• Relativehumidity

• Humidityratio

• Airvelocity

• Meanradianttemperature

Air temperature isonly thestartingpoint in creatinga comfortable environment. By reducing the inside airtemperature to 70°F a personmay be comfortable to acertaindegree.However,inahighhumiditylocation,youcouldstillhavetheclammyfeelingduetoallthemoistureintheair.Thebodywillnaturallyevaporatethismoisture,whichcould lead toacolduncomfortable feeling.Whenthehumidityleveliscontrolledataproperlevelapersoncanbecomfortableatahigherindoortemperature.Withnoevaporationontheskinsurfacebeingexperienced,noheattransferwillbetakingplace,allowingtheindividualtoenjoyaconstanttemperatureontheskinsurface.

Airvelocitywithinaroomcanalsohaveabigeffecton comfort. When not enough airflow is introduced, stratificationandroomseparationmayoccur.Stratificationisthelayeringofhotandcoldair;hotairwillalwaysriseandcanresult inabigtemperaturedifferencefromfloorto ceiling. In conventional systemswhich use the throwanddiffusionmethod, separationcanoccurfromonesideof the room to the other, with the air closer to the ventusually being colder. Both stratification and separationhappenwhenthereisnomeansofcirculatingtheroomair.TheHi-VelocitySystemprovides constantair circulationthroughtheVenturiaffect, neverallowingstratificationorroomseparationtooccur.
