From “learning” thermostats to energy saving smartphone apps to smart electric meters, it has never been easier to monitor and control your home’s energy use. While we all love doing our part to help the environment, the real draw here is how these simple solutions will help you save money by keeping those monthly energy bills low. Here are just some of many easy home energy-monitoring tools that can help your home run as efficiently as possible.
M O N I T O RY o u r H o m e E n e r g y U s a g e S M A R T
SMART ThermostatsMany homeowners worry they won’t be able to keep their homes comfortable without their energy bills going through the roof. Luckily, innovations in smart thermostat technology can help you keep your house comfortable year-round without breaking the bank.
Most smart thermostats can be adjusted manually in your home or wirelessly from any location through your computer or smartphone. Each time you adjust the thermostat, it learns about your temperature preferences and daily life. It then uses this information to help you keep your home at a consistently comfortable temperature while simultaneously saving money on energy costs.
Examples of smart thermostats include the Ecobee Smart Thermostat, Nest Thermostat, the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat, and the Venstar ColorTouch Thermostat.
SMARTphone AppsThere are several smartphone energy management apps now available. Some of the most popular aps are PlotWatt, Kill-Ur-Watts, WattBuddy and Bidgely. These apps monitor your home’s energy use by gathering data from your energy provider and relaying that information back to you through user-friendly, easy-to-understand graphs and charts.
These are just a few home energy management products that can help you be a little kinder to the environment, not to mention your wallets, without sacrificing comfort or convenience in the process.
SMART MetersUtility companies, including City Utilities of Springfield and Webster Electric Cooperative, have invested in AMI smart electric meters for homes and businesses. These new meters are the next generation of metering that will allow utility companies to be more efficient and to provide additional information to their customers. AMI meters provide two-way communication through either a radio or cell phone chip. This technology is the same as your cell phone, your baby monitor or the router in your home. Once an AMI meter is installed, your utility company will immediately know when you have a power outage and when your power has been restored. Many of us remember the 2007 ice storm and how hard utility companies worked to restore power. With these new meters, power can be restored more quickly and efficiently – no longer will the utilities have to call customers to confirm that power has been restored prior to moving on to the next neighborhood. Instead, they can ping the smart meter to determine if electricity has been restored. Customers will have the ability to monitor their power usage from their computer and their mobile devices. Smart meters put the power into the customer’s hands, allowing them to make changes during the month to lower their bills. AMI meters have also made it easier to discover and diagnose usage issues including electric usage theft and problems with wells. City Utilities of Springfield plans to start installing the AMI meters in 2015 (this year) and will have 6,000 to 10,000 of the meters installed by the end of 2016. The goal is to have all homes fitted with AMI meters by 2025. The Webster Electric Cooperative began the installation of AMI meters in July 2010 and completed the project in April 2011.

INTEREST RATES ARE LOW Today’s historically low interest rates are helping first-time home buyers find affordable housing options. Average weekly interest rates for a 30-year fixed mortgage remain under 4.5%.

There’s no indication that rates will suddenly surge upward, but even a slight rate increase can push monthly payments to the point that a buyer might miss out on their first choice for a new home.

(corn/peas/carrots/green beans or your favorite veggies)
• Beef Broth (48 Ounces)• 2 Envelopes Brown Gravy Mix• Salt & Pepper to Taste
Peel the potatoes, chop into chunks (approximately ¼” x ¼” – does not have to be perfect). Place chopped potatoes in bot-tom of crock pot. Sprinkle a little salt and pepper over the potatoes. Cook the ham-burger, drain, place on top of potatoes in the crock pot. Pour the frozen vegetables over the hamburger, cover with beef broth. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the top. Turn crock pot onto high and cook for approximately 5 hours. Test a potato to see if it’s done. When potatoes are cooked, sprinkle the brown gravy mix over the top then stir everything together. Sample the soup to see if it needs additional salt, pepper or other seasoning to spice it up. Enjoy!

Learning the ins and outs of how to use a ladder safely can help avoid serious injury or even death. The following tips can help you use ladders with care: Make sure to use the right ladder for the job. The ladder should be high enough for you to reach your work area without using or standing on the highest rung. The base of the ladder should always be secured. Ask someone to sit on the bottom rung to hold it in place. Check the ladder’s maximum load rating to make sure that it can support both your weight and the weight of any supplies, tools or materials you are using. Never place or use a ladder on an uneven surface. Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder, and keep your weight centered between the rails. Leaning away from the ladder can cause it to tilt and tip over. Slip-resistant shoes are best when it comes to ladders; leather soles lack grip. Do not carry tools or materials in your hands while climbing a ladder. Check the rung locks and spreader braces on your ladder to make sure they are set firmly in place. Never use a ladder with faulty spreading or locking devices or a ladder with damaged parts or missing rungs. Keep ladders away from doors that can be opened; if work must be done in front of a door, make sure that it is locked or guarded. One person should use a ladder at a time. Climbing down more than one step at time, sliding and jumping down a ladder are all unsafe practices. Don’t use a ladder if you are feeling sick, dizzy or faint.
