1. Many consider the standard retirement age to be 65. One of the key influ-ences in arriving at that age was Germany, which initially set its retirement age at70 then lowered it to age 65. (1)

2. Every day for the next 15 years, another 10,000 baby boomers will turn65. That’s roughly one person every 8 seconds. (2)

3. In 2010, people aged 65 and older accounted for 13% of the population inthe U.S. By 2025, they are expected to make up 18% of the population. (3)

4. Ernest Ackerman was the first person to receive a Social Security benefit.In March 1937, the Cleveland streetcar motorman received a one-time, lump-sum pay-ment of 17¢. Ackerman worked one day under Social Security. He earned $5 for theday and paid a nickel in payroll taxes. His lump-sum payout was equal to 3.5% of hiswages. (4)

5. In 2001, people aged 65 and older owned 31% of the U.S.’s financial as-sets. By 2040, it is estimated they will hold 44% of the country’s financialassets. (5)

On Thursday October 25, the Golden West College Foun-dation held its annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony tothank donors and recognize successful alumni.

When President Wes Bryan opened the ceremony, he statedthat this is his favorite event because, “This event is where itall comes full circle. It celebrates what individuals did withtheir education and thanks those who help make it possible.”

This year, four alumni received an Alumni Pillar of Achieve-ment. The honorees were Kevin Elster, Major League BaseballPlayer (retired), Rick Lara, educator and coach, Chief ToddMattern, Chief of Police, City of Los Alamitos, and BrandeeWilliams, educator. All four alumni attributed their success toa great start at Golden West, naming faculty and coaches whomade a difference in their lives.

What do a Police Chief, TwoEducators, and a Major LeagueBaseball Player have in Common?They all got their start at Golden West College.

Two Pillars of Support were added this year– The Coast Community CollegeDistrict Foundation Pillar, and The Wells Fargo Pillar. A Pillar of Support repre-sents a cash gift from an individual or business of $25,000 or more.

The Premier Pillar of Support, is a new donor category, introduced last Marchat the GWC Gala, for individuals and businesses which have donated $100,000or more to Golden West College. Seven Premier donors were recognized at theceremony– Elmore Toyota, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, McBeth Founda-tion, Robert and Kathy Smith, Southern California Edison, Toyota Motor Sales,U.S.A. Inc., and Union Bank. They are designated on campus with a“Premier Bronze Seal” on their existing Pillar of Support and a bronze plate onthe donor wall.

The California New Car Dealers Association, Huntington Beach Art League,and Southland Industries were also acknowledged for moving up to the levelof Golden Society ($10,000 to $24,999) on the Courtyard Donor Wall.

President Bryan closed the ceremony by saying, “Remember – at the start Itold you this was my favorite event – now I am guessing you know why. It is atrue celebration of the best work we do together.”

Once you decide that now is the best to buy a home, you’llbe faced with many choices. Knowing your options andhaving all the information is the best way to help makethe right decisions. You’ll need to start looking at whereand when to apply, and what type of mortgage will be

right for you.

When to ApplySome people wait until after they make an offer on a home to getapproved for a mortgage, but it is best to do it beforehand. Why?

� It lets sellers know you are a serious buyer. Many sellers will notconsider offers from those without pre-approval.� It gives you a limit as to what homes to look at. Why put an offeron a house that would require a $500,000 mortgage if you can onlyget a $300,000 mortgage?� You do not have to rush to find financing after your offer is ac-cepted.

A lender can either pre-qualify you or pre-approve you. With pre-qualification, you are given an estimate of what you can afford. Itis not a guarantee. When you are pre-approved, you get a commit-ment from the lender to provide a mortgage for up to a specificamount, barring any major financial changes or problems with thehouse. If you are just starting to look and not sure when you aregoing to buy, getting pre-qualified is sufficient. However, once yourhome search turns serious, it is a good idea to get pre-approved.The pre-approval typically lasts for 60-90 days.

Application criteriaLenders consider many factors when deciding whether or not toapprove a loan and how much to approve you for. They typically in-clude your credit score, the down payment amount and your otherassets, your employment history, your income and your existingdebt.

Finding a lenderApplying at financial institutions where you already have a pre-ex-isting relationship is often a good place to start. Mortgage typesFixed-rate mortgage: Fixed-rate mortgages come with an interestrate that remains constant over the life of the loan. The interest rateis usually initially higher than for other types of mortgages. How-ever, because the interest rate and monthly payment are fixed, theyprovide a stability that is appealing to many buyers.

Adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM): ARMs have a period of fixed in-terest, after which the interest rate and payment adjust at specificintervals. In general, the interest rate and monthly payment for anARM start off lower than for a fixed-rate mortgage of the sameamount. However, they often become higher once a few adjust-ments occur. An ARM may be a good option for people who plan tosell in a few years or expect their income to increase significantly,but it can be risky. If you cannot afford the payment increase, youmay lose your home.

Mortgage termsThe term refers to the length of the loan. The traditional mortgageterm is 30 years, but it can range from 10 to 40 years. In general,the shorter the term, the lower the interest rate. You get a lowerpayment with a longer term, but you wind up paying more in inter-est over the life of the loan (not just because of the higher interestrate but also because you are borrowing for a longer period of time).

Government programsLoans offered through federal government programs can come withmore attractive features than conventional loans. The two mostpopular ones are:

VA loans: VA loans are insured by the Department of Veterans Af-fairs and are only available to eligible veterans. No down paymentis required.

FHA loans: FHA loans are insured by the Federal Housing Admin-istration, a division of HUD (the Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment). A down payment of at least 3.5% is required.

Many states and cities have programs specifically for first-timehomebuyers. They make it easier to buy a home by offering suchthings as down payment assistance, below-market-rate units, and/orlow-interest loans.

Laser procedures can be more precise and can reduce symptoms and healing timesassociated with traditional therapies, reduce the amount of bacteria in both dis-eased gum tissue and in tooth cavities and control bleeding during surgery.

Q: Are dental lasers safe?A: If the dental laser is used according to accepted practices by a trained practi-tioner, then it is at least as safe as other dental instruments. However, just as youwear sunglasses to protect your eyes from prolonged exposure to the sun, whenyour dentist performs a laser procedure, you will be asked to wear special eye-glasses to protect your eyes from the laser.

Q: How can I be sure my dentist is properly trained to use a laser?A: Ask your dentist questions about the extent of his or her laser education andtraining. Make sure that your dentist has participated in educational courses andreceived training by the manufacturer of the specific laser used in his or her prac-tice. I’m often asked by my patients if they can purchase their medications from online phar-macies. I always respond with a resounding NO! My advice is supported by a recent FDAreport warning consumers about the dangers of buying medications from the more than40,000 online pharmacies. The report estimates 70% of online pharmacies may be il-legal and sell drugs of questionable quality and purity.

Furthermore, don’t be fooled by online pharmacies that claim they work with doctors. I askyou, what reputable, licensed doctor would put his or her license on the line prescribing drugsfor patients they have never met?

Let me outline a few of the signicant dangers of ordering medications from online pharmacies:• QUALITY - What’s in the medication you are purchasing online? If the online pharmacyclaims they can sell you a brand name drug that costs $10 per pill in a retail store for $3,where are they getting it from? Brand name manufacturers are not likely to provide the med-ication for a fraction of what it costs normally. If it’s a brand name product then there’s nogeneric equivalent. So what is actually in the pill that you purchase?

• PURITY and ACCURACY - One of the reasons that medications are so expensive is that themanufacturing process is strictly regulated to ensure that there is purity and accuracy in thepreparation. Is the stated amount of a medicine correct? In other words is 250 mg really 250mg or are there a lot of fillers and binders? If the medication doesn’t contain the exact dosage,you won’t get the benefit you’re expecting and the health consequences can be severe.

• CONTAMINATION - If an online pharmacy is compounding a drug, are they doing it in a ster-ile environment? Has the medication been contaminated with bacteria or viruses? Weremasks and gloves used by the personnel involved in the manufacturing process? As the cur-rent meningitis outbreak due to improper manufacturing processes at the New England Com-pounding Pharmacy demonstrates, serious impurities can infect the products made by theseonline compounding pharmacies. Those impurities can, in turn, cause death or serious ill-nesses from infections to gastrointestinal problems.

Please be careful when purchasing your medications. Remember - you get what you pay for!

Historical perspectiveSince 1843 when conquistador Raimundo Carrillo received a land grant and became the first cattlerancher of the Santa Ynez Valley, the Alisal (meaning "grove of sycamores" in Chumash, a NativeAmerican language) established itself as a working cattle ranch. In 1943, the property was purchasedby The Jackson Family and evolved into a guest ranch. The Alisal’s rich heritage and idyllic setting make it a haven for rest and relaxation and one of Amer-ican’s most prestigious properties boasting a well preserved civilizedpast. Couples honeymoon here, families enjoy reunions and executivesfind a welcome respite from urban life.

In our case, we were looking for a brief respite from the day-to-day with-out having to travel too far from home. While Alisal is only a three tofour hour drive from Orange County, it feels worlds away – the propertyis blessed with an abundance of wildlife and hiking trails meanderaround the resort's rich flora and fauna (nature lovers can take a self-guided hike through Deer Canyon where some 64 different animals in-cluding deer, possums, bobcats, mountain lions, wild boar and blackbears reside).

Back at the ranch, children as well as adults can participate in the caringof the ponies, bottle-feeding the goats, calves, exotic miniature horsesand sheep seven days a week at The Alisal Barn Yard. Our kids (ages 5and 4) loved “riding” Cactus (a gentle horse tethered to a tree duringthe day so the resort’s youngest guests can have their parents lead them around the corral attheir leisure). Kids can also participate in egg gathering, grooming and exercising the animalsin the corral.

A recreation center unto itself, the 100-acre spring fed Alisal Lake, filled with bass; trout; and bluegill,offers “catch-and-release” fishing. You can rent a boat or fish off the dock – our son caught his firstfish (a Bigmouth Bass reeled in with Daddy’s help) by casting (also with Daddy’s help) from the dock.This sportsman's paradise attracts bird watchers and guests with canoes, rowboats, peddle boats,kayaks or sail boats. As one of two California properties to be an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing opera-tion, Alisal offers fly-fishing and boating lessons for children and adults.

Visitors rarely leave the Alisal during their stay and for good reason. Leaving at dawn, guests enjoymore than 50 miles of equestrian trails on horseback circling the magnificent hills and sycamore groves.Twice daily group rides, private rides and breakfast rides to the historicAdobe Camp round out a stay.Aspiring equestrians can hone their riding skills at the corral with private lessons. Children delight inthe Alisal Rodeo with stick horse and gunny sack races and boot relays in an authentic western arena.

us in Orange County, a visit down to many ofthese groundbreaking breweries is a simpleday trip, a reality for which every OC-basedbrew fan should be praising the heavens.

As the beer has developed, so has the indus-try around it. It’s “trickle down brewconomics”– great beer begets manifold tour services.You quickly realize that with all the amazingbrews to sample, nobody will want to be thedesignated driver; and at the end of the hop,

everyone will want to land in a spot where the journey just experi-enced can be savored.

The folks at Rancho Bernardo Inn, situated ideally near the brew-haha,have the situation dialed in. Their tasting packages leave everyonesatisfied. Look for the “Look What’s Brewing” package that includesaccommodations, a chauffeured tour to local breweries (includingtasting tickets), and breakfast the morning after to boot. (Hint: If youhave a beer lover in your life, this package just might be the best giftever given – send him or her with a growler and perhaps you’ll get lit-tle something in return).

My friends and I took up the offer and made it a guy’s weekend. FromRancho Bernardo our first stop was Iron Fist, one of the newest brew-eries on the scene. In its second year, this family-owned brewery hascaptured the attention of beer critics and average ale lovers alike, notonly for its award winning eclectic brews, but also because, when it

opened, the mastermind behind its flavors had just turned 21. Despitethe youth of its brewmaster, Iron Fist is producing a sophisticatedlineup of flavors. (I highly recommend the Velvet Glove, an oatmealstout with rich, dark chocolate and coffee). If you’re lucky enough, per-haps Grandpa will come out and tell you a joke. Anxious to get on tothe next brewery, we skipped the hot dog stand out front and piledback into the limo. Fortunately for us, inside was a picnic basket filledwith all sorts of tasty snacks to keep our mouths stimulated (thanks,Rancho Bernardo!).

Next up was a combination of two breweries in one: Lost Abbey andPort Brewing. Lost focuses on more traditional Belgian-style beers, em-ploying oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels for their agingtechniques. Port, on the other hand, lauds west coast (read Californian)inspired beers. Same company, just different demographics. Both sidesoffer beers robust in both flavor and alcohol content, so sip slowly andbe sure to check out the great “religious” paintings that cover most of

the walls. Memorable beers herewere Hop 15 (Port Brewing) andJudgement Day (Lost Abbey).

While there’s only so much to pilein to one tour, the area has a lotto offer. You could spend daystouring the county and still nottaste it all; that’s how rich SanDiego’s craft brew scene has be-come. Some notable destina-tions in the northern regioninclude Stone Brewery (knownfor its welcoming grounds al-most as much as for its beer)and Ballast Point, whoseSculpin IPA is one of SanDiego’s most popular brew ex-ports. And if you make time to

find repast at a pub that showcases the local beer scene, all thebest San Diego breweries can be found right there at your table,paired with food that makes their flavors shine. (See sidebar onURGE Gastropub.)

The Rancho Bernardo Inn is known mainly for its championshipgolf course, but you don’t have to be a golfer to appreciate the lux-ury accommodations, award-winning restaurants and sprawling,peaceful grounds. We were never more thankful we had launchedfrom the Inn as when we came back to it, washed in some of theworld’s best craft brew and swimming in good times had with goodfriends. Breakfast the next morning in the fresh air at the Inn’s Ve-randa Fireside Lounge, before heading back to reality just 45 min-utes north, was a tidy (and delicious) way to wrap up an experiencethat with any luck we’ll all be able to enjoy again.

At a very young age my dad taught me what it means to make a commitmentand stick to it. He was the most committed person I’d ever met, if he saidhe would be somewhere you just knew he would be there. His friends andcoworkers used to say, “You know if Bob said he would do it, it would getdone.” It was said as such a great compliment.

I remember thinking to myself as an impressionable child; “I want people to say thatabout me!” I would speak to my dad about it, I remember it vividly. He said, “It startswith following through with commitments you make to yourself.” He told me that inorder for you to be someone people can count on, you have to be true to commit-ments you make to yourself first.

He explained to me, if you can’t follow throughwith your own commitments how could you becounted on to be there for others?

It starts with little things as a child - make yourbed, eat breakfast, do your homework, do whatyou say you are going to do even if no one else iswatching.

I can honestly say that every time I made a com-mitment to compete in bodybuilding at one pointor another I wanted to quit, but I never did. Iwould remember what my dad said to me. “Everytime you make a commitment to yourself, youneed to keep it!” I always did, and it served mewell in other parts of my life.

How good are you at keeping your word? Manyof us try very hard to keep our commitments toothers. We try to call if we say we will. We makeevery effort to show up when others are countingon us. We try to get projects done on time. Wedon't promise things we can't deliver.

We want our word to be worth something. That'spart of living with integrity.

Unfortunately, many of us are not quite as goodat keeping our commitments to ourselves. Howmany times have you said, "I'm going to. . .” onlyto have that intention fall away? “I’m going toslow down, I'm going to lose weight, I'm going toget my life in order, I'm going to exercise regu-larly, I'm going to watch less T.V. and spend moretime reading, I'm going to get to bed at a decenthour." Sound familiar?

Do we really mean what we are saying? If so, weneed to make a COMMITMENT to follow throughon the things we are promising ourselves in justthe same way that we would if we were makingthose promises to someone else.

Ultimately, it ends up all coming back to yourword. How much is your word worth? If you can'thonor your commitments to yourself and/or oth-ers, your life is likely to feel out of control and outof balance due to not living with integrity.

If you are good at honoring your commitments toothers, but don't do as well at honoring commit-ments to yourself, look at this issue honestly.Your commitment to yourself is every bit as im-portant as your commitment to others. Make thatcommitment to yourself count first.
