The collection available for garden centres, via the traditional wholesalers, includes the essential volume lines and there are special pallet deals and point of sale deals available on these lines.

5 Litre Metal Slimcan The modern, some might say continental, version of the Traditional Can. Designed with a single handle running from front to back, this can is best used two handed but can easily be used single-handed. Haws Watering Cans have been making watering cans and roses in the UK since 1886. Safe to say they know a thing or two about watering!

Whilst a professional Haws watering can is without doubt an iconic object of beauty there are many cans in the range. Cans for all occasions it might be said. All are made with function at the heart of the design and this has been the case from the very beginning.

There is a right and a wrong way to do everything and although watering plants using a watering can with a rose attached looks simple enough there are certain do’s and don’ts that make the job, as they say in the potting shed, “a good ‘un”.

1 Choose the right can for the jobThis often means having several cans in your garden equipment armoury.

For example ■ A large 8.8 litre can for border and patio watering where volume is

important and trips to the tap need to be minimised. ■ A medium 5 litre can where volume is important but weight is an

issue. ■ A long spouted can where reach is important. ■ A small 1 or 2 litre can for conservatory and greenhouse bench

watering. ■ A can kept especially for weed killer application. ■ A metal or plastic version of any of the above depending on budget

and style preference.

2 Choose the right rose for the job

This is so often the area that is overlooked and can make a huge difference to the quality of the watering job in hand.

For example ■ A coarse spray rose for established plants

where volume is important. ■ A medium spray rose for plants where a

compromise between volume delivered and soil erosion is important.

■ A fine spray rose for seeds and seedlings where it is crucial to avoid washout and soil erosion.

■ A special rose for weed killing work. ■ A rose and extension spout for short spouted

cans. ■ An extended spout helps build the pressure of

water at the spray head and therefore delivers a better intensity of spray.

■ A rose for the hose pipe. ■ Haws watering cans are supplied with the most

suitable rose for the can. Most are engineered in brass. They will not fit other makes of can.

■ However Haws also make another a range of roses under the name of Fine as Rain which will instantly transform the capabilities of any other make of can.

3 Get the best out of the equipmentThere are some tricks of the trade when using a spray rose on your watering can.

For example ■ Before attaching the rose make sure the can is pouring properly

and the spout is not blocked. We hear many tales of mice and snails taking up residence!

■ Attach the rose with a twisting action to ensure a secure fit and prevent it from falling off when spraying starts. Always develop the spray away from the target plant or seedling tray and move to the target once a satisfactory spray has been established. Likewise move away from or off the target to finish spraying. This avoids the chance that any final drips from the rose will wash out seeds or cause soil erosion.

■ For greenhouse watering always fill the can in the morning for watering in the evening to allow the water to come up to temperature.

■ Be bold in tipping the can as this will get a good spray going more quickly. It’s rather like perfecting a golf swing – a pleasing result only comes with practice.
