Harrison East Elementary

The “GERMS” stop here!

Julie McPeak BSMT(ASCP), MS Laboratory Manager at Harrison Community Hospital presented a hand

washing education for the 6th grade classes at Harrison East Elementary on October 21, 2014. She discussed the difference between bacteria and viruses which included a discussion of how to treat these infections, how to decontaminate surfaces to limit exposure and the proper way to wash your hands. Vaccination and antibiotic use for treatment/prevention of diseases were also discussed.

There was a discussion on Ebola and the children had lots of good questions. Mrs. McPeak helped to ease their concerns by going over the CDC guidelines for how the disease is transmitted and let them know that the “local” residents that were making the news have not been tested for or are not currently infected with the virus, but being monitored for signs and symptoms. Knowing that the first group of friends/family of the deceased patient Mr. Duncan were returning to work and school and are symptom free also eased their minds.

Mrs. McPeak did a black light demonstration using glo gel to simulate germs on their hands, which showed that hand washing is an essential step in preventing diseases and infections. A select few were dressed in PPE (personal protective equipment) which included gowns, masks gloves and a face shield to let them experience what hospital employees have available to use for their protection. We discussed more advanced PPE needed for those treating Ebola patients.

Lastly we did an art project where each student created their own “germ” using a blow painting technique.
