TÜÉâÇw tÇw TuÉâà |Ç [tÜuÉÜ VÄâu With Judy Stultz We experienced record low FREEZING temperatures this winter ~ causing even the most die-hard golfers to seek shelter at home in front of the fire. To escape the frigid climate ~ HC’s professional cruisers, Janie & Bob Legg, were off in January for their third cruise through the Panama Canal. This follows a December cruise from Rio de Janeiro to Florida that included shipmates ~ Charlie Cook and Gwenn Ifel of the PBS news network. Where to next Janie & Bob? The MGA held their annual Awards Dinner on January 9th. Outgoing President, Gary Williams introduced the 2010
officers, Osci Gordon, President and Jim Gburek, Vice president. (More info. in MGA article.) Boys and their toys ~ Unable to be out on the links because of our foul winter weather, one group of golfers found another challenging outlet for their energies as Dave Hamilton and Glenn Kendall hosted the Wii Bowling teams on Monday evenings. Valentine’s Day brought us a snowy wonderland, luckily the Valentine Dinner/Dance was held the following night. Couples enjoyed a wonderful Surf & Turf dinner before
dancing to the music of the Derany Band. Angela and Stephen were on hand to snap “prom pictures” for each couple.
Harbor Club Ladies League ~ Ladies entering the club-house at Harbor Club for the January meeting were pleasantly surprised to find sparkling glasses of Mi-mosa’s awaiting them for the Brunch instead of Lunch meeting. Several rounds of Bingo concluded the morn-ing’s activities. In February Deborah Dukes of Lake Country Design presented a program on Trends in Furniture and Home Décor for 2010-2011. She brought many of her vendors whose fabulous displays attracted quite a few shop-pers. And ~ our HC Ladies are certainly tops in the shopping category!
March took the ladies to the Carriage House for an Antiques Road Show styled program. Many of the members brought in family heirlooms and treasures to be appraised and admired. Macon’s Grand Opera House was a March destination for the ladies as they traveled to see a production of Lord of the Dance at the historic theater. The HC Outreach Committee held a Guys & Gals Card/Game fundraiser in February where soups, sandwiches and sweets were served before the games began. Proceeds are being donated to local charities. Members also continue to donate time to the Christian Outreach Thrift Store. Continued on next page……...
Around and About continued…. The Water Aerobics group is spending the winter months at the new Aquatic Center in Madison. They’ll resume swimming at the Harbor Club pool once the temperature gets into a comfortable zone. Diane Hamilton only agreed to play a round of golf with Linda VanDuzer and Diane Gburek on Sunday, Feb. 21st because it was the first mild/sunny day in weeks. Using her driver on number 12 ~ SHE HIT A HOLE-IN-ONE! Well done Diane! Thursday, March 25th was the kickoff date for the HC LGA 2010 season. A trunk show before the meeting gave all the gals a look at the latest in golf wear. Officers for the year are: Val Ledyard ~ President, Rita Jones ~ Secretary/Treasurer, Marie Madsen ~ Tournaments and Kathy Kurelic ~ Playdays. Their first day of play just happened to be on April Fool’s Day! Wishing you a Happy Easter, warm spring days and starry, starry nights ahead. Judy

Harbor Club Game Group If you love playing cards, join the Harbor Club Game Group! The group boasts over 90 members this year (80 regular players and 13 substitutes). The members meet in groups of eight every other month to play the card game, Texas Tango. Each couple brings an hors d’ oeuvre to share along with their drink of preference. Hosts are rotated so that each couple only entertains once during the year. Sheila and John Connelly are in charge of setting up the groups each year. At the end of the Game year an Awards party is held and prizes given to the first through sixth place winners. The loser is awarded the infamous Fanny Flamingo, to be displayed in his/her front yard until the following year’s loser has to claim ownership. This group is a great way to meet new neighbors (or get reacquainted with the old) and have a fun evening while doing so. For more information, please contact the Connelly's at706-454-0805. May will conclude the 2009-2010 year for the Ladies League. The meetings will resume in September. We hope you all have a wonderful summer as we look forward to a new excit-ing year with new programming.
Men’s Golf Association Update The last tournament of 2009 was the Santa Claus Open on Dec. 12, which was a two man event. Congratulations to the winners: Low Gross - Jim Davis & Bob Weyhmiller, 2nd Gross- Frank Botdorf & George Wheeler, Low Net- Kenny Hyatt & Charlie Whittemore, 2nd Low Net - Glenn Kendall & Keith VanDuzer. The first tournament of the 2010 year was the Hangover Opener with nine players on an extremely cold day. Congratulations to all that played and the low Gross winner- Bud Stultz in a card play off over Bob Legg. Low Net Winner was Ed Clements with 2nd Place going to young Taylor Hyatt. Our awards dinner on January 9th was another successful year-ending event and en-joyed by all. Congratulations to all the award winners. Regretfully Jack Demyan our 2009 Club Champion has retired and left Harbor Club. He will be missed and we wish him well. Unfortunately, the bad weather continued and the Polar Bear Scramble in February had to be cancelled. A fun and tasty day was still enjoyed by many golfers and spouses dur-ing the chili cook-off. Congratulations to Gary Lockman for first place. On March 13th right after the MGA business meeting the ABCD Scramble was con-tested on a very wet course. Breakfast had 32 attendees and the tournament 27. Thanks to the Professional Staff- Grant, Doug and Russ, as well as the cart girls and to J. R. and the Golf Course Maintenance crew. Congratulations to the winners as follows:
Don’t forget to sign up Master’s Tee Times in four-somes. Call early as times are filling up. Also please continue signing up on the Bulletin Board for the Wed. and Sat. The Harbor Club Ladies Golf Association had the 2010 kickoff meeting on March 25th at the Polo Grille. A trunk show from 4-6 pm displayed the fashion trends for the fall season. Expect lots of good buys in the Proshop this year, ladies! A business meeting followed the season's opening festivities. Dues are $50.00 for the year and must be paid to participate on play-days. Checks can be made out to HCLGA. Rules and etiquette was discussed at the meeting, and there will be more rules practicum scheduled. We will review the schedule for the golf clin-ics to be run by the Proshop, LGA tournaments and play days. If your putter is not already marked bring it with you. Putters that aren't marked don't qualify for "gimme" putts! It promises to be a fun filled and exciting year so come out and join us! Lately, I have been asked a lot of questions from homeowners wanting advice on what to do to their lawns this year. While each yard is different and has its own microenvironment, there are a few basic rules for you “DIY” to follow to achieve that beautifully manicured lawn you have always strived for.
It is recommended that a soil test is done in the spring. The results of the soil test can offer you a guideline of amendments that need to be added to your lawn and the rates at which you should go out with them. First, look at the soil ph. Generally, turf grasses grow optimally in a ph range of 6.5-7.0. Georgia clayey soils usually are on the low end of this range and can be altered or raised with applications of lime throughout the year. Basic soils are not com-mon in this area, but high ph levels can be lowered over time by applying acidifying fertilizers such as ammonium sulfate to your yard.
A soil test will also recommend fertilizer rates to apply depending on the nutrient availability of your soil. On a bag of fertilizer you will see three numbers. These three numbers represent the amount of nutrients in the bag in order: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (N-P-K) as a percentage of weight.
With a basic fertilizer program, a well rounded fertilizer such as 20-20-20 is recommended, two times a year, one in the spring and one in mid-summer. Apply at a rate of one lb. of nitrogen per 100 square feet (about 5 bags of product per acre). A more complex program starts in the spring with a fertilizer ratio high in phosphorus and a quick release nitrogen source for initial green-up. In mid-summer, apply a slow release fertilizer high in nitrogen. This will give you season long color and growth.
A word of caution! Centipede lawns should not be over fertilized. It is recommended to cut the applications down to once a year with a low nitrogen and high phosphorus content. Zoysia lawns generally require more nitrogen per year than Centipede, depending on the intensity of maintenance.
Remember not to “over do it,” always follow the rates provided to you by the manufacturer. Research has shown that most environmental contamination comes from over fertilization. Plants are only able to take up on aver-age 1lb of nitrogen\100ft2 at a given time; anything else ends up as runoff into ground water. As always we are open for questions or concerns. Here’s to a beautiful healthy lawn.
Points of Interest: • Harbor Club continues the real estate referral program: Any Harbor Club property owner who
comes to the sales office and registers a referral resulting in a Harbor Company owned prop-erty sale will be rewarded with a three thousand dollar ($3,000.00) credit. The credit may be used at the Harbor Club pro-shop, club restaurant, or applied to the referee's membership dues. A registered referral is a referral that is not currently listed in the Harbor Club sales data base. We encourage you to come by our sales office , visit our agents and take advantage of this great offer.
• Mr. Jim Brown resigns as manager of the Polo Grille and Lounge Restaurant to accept a position with son, country music star Zac Brown. Harbor Club appreciates all the good work Jim has done. We understand his excitement for the opportunity to not only work with his "star" son but to also spend more time with family. We wish he and Zac the very best. The club restaurant will continue operation as usual. We are currently working on getting a replacement for food and beverage manager.
• Interior Painting: The interior painting of the club house has been completed. • Spring and warm weather have finally arrived! Our golf course is turning green and, weather permitting,
should be dry by Masters Week. We look forward to seeing all members on the golf course. As summer approaches, we encourage members to take advantage of the many amenities your membership offers. Have a great summer! Bill Dotson
YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x [xtw cÜÉyxáá|ÉÇtÄ‹A From the PRO SHOP…Hope everyone is ready to come out of hibernation. We have missed all of you. The spring fashions are arriving from Adidas, Ashworth, Divots, Greg Norman, & Sport Ha-ley. As far as equipment, with everyone buzzing about grooves; we are dedicating our Demo Day on April 24 to “Weducation”. Cleveland Golf with the support of “Golf Digest” will conduct a free wedge clinic from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. All attendees will receive a complementary CD from David Toms and bag inventory check list. Doug Price, PGA Apprentice is helping players with Mizuno’s custom club fitting. Be sure to let him assist you with the “Swing Analyzer”. The Club Fitting is FREE. The popular Couples Golf will start Sunday, March 28, for the 18 hole players; and Friday, April 16 will be the first evening of “9 and dine”. CALENDAR REMINDERS: APRIL—PGA Free Fitting & Trade up month. Saturday, April 24, Demo Day. May—PGA Free Lesson Month. May 13-15, Member/Guest. June—American Express Women’s Golf Month. Saturday, June 12, Women’s Clinic & Scramble. Thank you for all your support. Grant A. Gaalema, PGA
Golf Tip From the Lesson tee…TURN, DON’T SLIDE Many players tell me that they’re trying to “load their right side” or “get to their right side” in the backswing, but in almost all cases, that player is sliding back instead of turning. The one thing you must do in the backswing is to create space and an angle of approach with the lower body, which allows the torso to fully turn and load. In the backswing, the hips shouldn’t have any lateral movement, but instead should turn in a clockwise direction while staying inside the width of your feet. If the hips slide in the backswing, it almost always cause the right knee to straighten and will place the majority of body weight on the front foot (a reverse pivot). This will also cause the torso to under rotate, placing you in a weak position from which to start the forward swing. To help feel the proper rotation and load, try placing a shaft on an angle from the inside of your right heel to the inside of your left toe. Practice by making backswings where your hip angle matches that of the shaft on the ground. It’s critical to keep your right knee flexed and your weight in your right heel at the top of the swing. Don’t be surprised if your torso feels more rotated than normal, but your arms feel shorter. With the hips turned more sharply and your weight in the right heel, the club will travel on a more inside-out path, and you’ll feel more powerful. If you struggle with slicing or an overall lack of power, this drill is a must. Grant A. Gaalema, PGA
